Abstract:
This chapter describes the period that unceremoniously ended the Italian military occupation in France during World War II. Starting in late July 1943, the Italians set in motion their gradual disengagement from southeastern France. In theory all units, with the exception of a few coastal divisions, were supposed to return to Italy by midnight on September 9. Officially the Italians were moving their troops from France in order to shore up Italy’s defenses. The end of the occupation matched its beginnings in June 1940 and September 1942, both in its strategic improvisation and utter disorganiz

Abstract:
This chapter develops an internalist defense of the claim that we all have most reason to be moral, drawing on Kant’s argument for his “formula of humanity,” which states: “so act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end and never merely as a means.” It argues that rational pressure to form maximally coherent, systematically justifiable sets of ends gives us all reason to respect others as ends in themselves—reason that cannot be outweighed by our reasons to promote our own optional ends. It defends the Kantian argument

Unger, Matthew Peter. Contingency and the Symbolic Experience of Christian Extreme Metal. Edited by Jonathan Dueck and Suzel Ana Reily. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199859993.013.22.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Christian extreme metal as a window on the way religion is expressed in contemporary Western culture, drawing on continental theorists of the post-secular. Christian extreme metal lyrics, sonic and structural musical features, and visual features are remarkably continuous with “secular” extreme metal, which positions itself in explicit opposition to Christianity and the “mainstream” world. But Christian extreme metal fans see Christian metal as qualitatively different from “secular” extreme metal. This apparent contradiction shows powerfully how religious symbols circulat

Two-dimensional angles on a picture surface are misperceived. Angles of 40º to 65º and 120º to 160º in a quadrilateral depicting the top of a cube are heavily biased toward the pictured angle (90º). The illusion is likely due to 3D information (e.g., eccentricity depicting foreshortening). Information for the picture surface lessens the effect. Information on the picture surface illusion is covered in this chapter, including the related concepts of 3D and 2D biases and the effect of parameters. The chapter concludes that drawing is likely to be affected by the picture surface illusion, especia

This book argues that the rampant hate-filled attacks against women online are best understood as patterned resistance to women’s political voice and visibility. This abuse and harassment coalesces into an often-unrecognized form of gender inequality that constrains women’s use of digital public spaces, much as the pervasive threat of sexual intimidation and violence constrain women’s freedom and comfort in physical public spaces. What’s more, the abuse exacerbates inequality among women, those from racial, ethnic, religious, and/or other minority groups, are disproportionately targeted. Drawi

Abstract:
Integrating insights from the Ancient Greeks (e.g. concerning virtue, eudaimonia, and the original meaning of “democracy”), John Dewey, and recent work in virtue epistemology, this chapter develops a virtue-based defense of democracy, one that conceives of democracy as an inquiry-based mode of social existence. This account of democracy is developed by responding to three common concerns raised against democracy, which the author calls the Irrationality Problem, the Problem of Autonomy, and the Epistocracy Objection. Virtue epistemology can help elucidate the link between democracy and human f

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors review research on self-esteem and self-concept in emerging adulthood. Drawing from traditional cognitive-developmental theories of self-development, as well as dialogical theories, they take a narrative approach to argue that emerging adults story their selves by engaging with cultural processes that emerge via media (e.g., television, movies, books, Facebook). The authors offer some suggestions for bridging cognitive-developmental and dialogical theories in the context of narrative construction of personal selves as they intersect with larger cultural stories.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the image Plutarch created of the end of Athenian Democracy. Its aim is to show that Plutarch conceived of this end through the lens of the theatre, and to explore the origins of this portrayal. It makes this argument through close study of the intersection of theatre and politics in Plutarch’s Life of Phocion. Plutarch expresses the political significance of crucial moments by drawing attention to their theatrical dimension. Theatrical venues, self-presentation, staging, speech, and props are used in order to create an emotional impact on an Athenian audience. Since Plut

Abstract:
This book argues against the conventional idea that Protestantism effectively ceased to play an important role in American higher education around the end of the 19th century. Employing Princeton as an example, the study shows that Protestantism was not abandoned but rather modified to conform to the educational values and intellectual standards of the modern university. Drawing upon a wealth of neglected primary sources, Kemeny sheds new light on the role of religion in higher education by examining what was happening both inside and outside the classroom, and by illustrating that religious a
