Abstract:
Aristotle stated in his Poetics that theatre's dual purpose was to educate and entertain. Centuries later the Roman Horace and Indian Bharata echoed his same sentiments. I intend to realize all three theorist's ideas on the theatre by creating an original educational and entertaining work and bringing it to performance. The audience will retain information without being aware of learning if it is presented in a pleasurable way. The most important geopolitical relationship of this century will be between China and America. In order to educate the American public about the culture of The Middle Kingdom, I propose to write and direct my own play, condensing all three thousand years of Chinese literature into a one hundred and ten minute performance. I will benefit from the personal nature of this thesis by experiencing every stage of a play's production: from idea to page to performance. My thesis will be made of three major parts: conceiving and writing the play, a journal of directing the debut production, and a third section made of choices, influences, and reflection on the entire experience. In this manner, the ideas swirling in my head may be made clear to others reading this thesis. The play itself will be a comical distillation of ten selected works of Chinese literature. Four non-gender specific American actors will seem to make up the show as it performs in a tongue-in-cheek way. Taking my stated goal of entertaining and educating the audience to heart, the overarching plot of the play will center on the four actors teaching the audience about the literature and culture of China by acting out scenes and telling stories. The information in the scenes will be targeted to a normal American citizen's educational level with liberal doses of humor added. The four actors will be playing fictionalized versions of themselves and at times breaking character by explaining and setting up the theatricality of the piece to the audience. Part of the fun of the show will be seeing how these actors explain a subject as obtuse as Chinese literature to Americans. Perhaps a cooking metaphor is the best way to think of the play: I will chop up raw Chinese literature, the actors will boil it onstage, the theatregoer will consume the mix, and exit the theatre full of entertaining intellectual nourishment. My experiences directing and producing the finished play will be recorded in a journal as a resource for future directors. I imagine directing the play will be the most challenging aspect of this thesis. How is the play changed when other people interact with it? How will the audience receive it? In addition, Committee Chair Mark Routhier and my thesis Committee Members, Mark Brotherton and Tan Huaixiang, will also give written responses to the play's performances. The play will be performed October 10-13, 2013 in the University of Central Florida's Performing Arts Complex Studio 2 classroom. In the final section I will write a reflection on the entire process. This will serve the dual purpose of giving me a place to collect my thoughts and giving others a special insight to the growth they might experience when producing this play. Foremost among my influences in writing a play with this subject matter are the style and tone of The Reduced Shakespeare Company.
M.A.
Masters
Theatre
Arts and Humanities
Theatre

Zhu, Fan, and 朱凡. "The earthly world and the red chambers : Qing women's self-representation and mediations with traditions in their writings on the Dream of the red chamber." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/195974.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the Qing women’s writings on the Dream of the Red Chamber. Qing women’s comments on the novel formed an important aspect of the second high tide of women’s literature in late imperial China. By examining these writings, I intend to reveal how the women authors mediated with the Confucian morality and how they exerted influence on the literary tradition from its inside. I also intend to examine the women authors’ self-representations and their reflections on the actual world they lived in. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the historical background of the rise of women’s writings on the Dream of the Red Chamber, and proceeds to discuss women’s self-representations under the influence of the Chinese literary tradition, as well as the conflict between morality and literary talent they often felt. I will also briefly summarize previous scholarly works concerning this subject. Chapter two analyzes Qing women’s poetic works and literary activities concerning the novel. I will make a few observations on the general tendency of women’s responses to the novel by examining their writing conditions, communities, the points they wanted to articulate, and their literary skills. Chapter three and four investigate two women writers, namely, Wu Lanzheng and Gu Taiqing, respectively. Among the dramatic works adapted from the novel, Jiang Heng Qiu by Wu is known to be the only existing work written by a female author. In this part of my discussion, I will include Wu’s poetic works on the novel and her personal experiences to shed light on the dramatic work. On the other hand, Honglou Meng Ying (The shadow of the Dream of the Red chamber) by Gu is the most profound and extensive response to the original novel by a female author. Considering that Gu’s life was quite similar to the literary characters in the book and a variety of her writings have survived, I will conduct a detailed study of her poetic and dramatic works before I look into her novel. The closing chapter draws conclusions from the previous chapters in the following three aspects: first, the influence of the textual world on the reality; second, women writers’ tendency of adopting the values of morality and literary talent concurrently, as well as their contributions to the literary tradition; and, third, the significance of Gu Taiqing’s case and Honglou meng ying. To sum up, inspired by the Dream of the Red Chamber, the Qing women authors undertook a rich variety of literary activities which demonstrated the complex relations between self and writing, and these women’s life experiences and creative activities also constituted an earthly picture of the “red chambers”.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Zhang, Shuyin. "The translation of figures of speech in Cao Xueqin's 'Dream of the Red Chamber' : a comparative study." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10041497/.

Full text
Abstract:
The novel Hongloumeng (Dream of the Red Chamber), one of the four great Chinese classic novels, can be seen as an encyclopaedia of 18th-century China that abounds in cultural information. Its use of different figures of speech such as metaphors, proverbs, similes and puns is a major source of cultural information. There are two complete published English translations of the novel - A Dream of the Red Mansions (Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang) and The Story of the Stone (David Hawkes and John Minford), both of which have become well known since they appeared in the late 1970s. The thesis investigates the procedures that the translators use for translating the different figures of speech that occur in both the prose and poetry of the novel. It is one of the first studies of Dream of the Red Chamber in English translation that focuses on the two translations within the context of a study of metaphor and other figures of speech in English translation. It also offers a harmonisation of Western and Chinese writing on figures of speech and represents one of the very few works to discuss a range of figures of speech (such as simile, metonymy, hyperbole, reduplication and proverb) besides metaphor in translation. The rhetorical devices used in the translations are being studied and analysed to gain an understanding of the translation procedures used. In this context the research seeks to answer the following questions: How do the translators render figures of speech in prose and in poetry? How do the translators deal with figures that contain cultural information? What do the translators do when there is no English counterpart for a well-known Chinese figure? The conclusion includes topics such as the translators’ preferences for procedures to translate different figures of speech, both individually and in general.

Abstract:
博士
國立中山大學
中國文學系研究所
101
Abstract This study aims to explore the imagery of twelve beauties and elevate the ideology of aesthetic by analyzing the images of characters and generalizing the corresponding relationships. Imagery is a concrete image, derived from abstract subjective emotions, while expressed through objective articles, metaphors, symbols, myths, or art as media. Such an oblique expression bullds an implicit beauty. The imagery in the text is like the treasure buried deep underneath - its radiance will be bright and dazzling when being unearthed. The discussion of imagery is an important part in literature criticism. The polysemy of the text not only allows readers to evoke aesthetic experiences from different aspects but also prompts them to reflect on various perspectives, which make the text open to interpretation. In addition, the imagery helps develop the plot and create atmosphere. The piling of images even distinguishes the qualities of each character, hence showing the significance of aesthetic. Cao Xueqin incorporated life’s aesthetic experiences into imagery, so readers could capture the demeanor of each character and the poetic atmosphere through delicate or sad scenarios. It is a series of poetic imagery that bestows endless artistic appeal on this masterpiece. Previous researches on “ A Dream of Red Mansions” focused more on commentaries, indexes, textual criticism and critique of the twelve beauties. Only little attention was drawn to the aesthetic features of the text. This study will compare the background, appearance, residence and brilliance of each beauty as a start, and then elaborate the meanings of the imagery. Different corresponding relationships between imagery and characters are found in the text - single imagery to multiple characters, or multiple imagery to one character. Each character is rendered by group of images, while each image has various meanings. The Ambiguity creates more tension and aesthetic meaning, stimulating readers ability towards recreation. Sorting out the multiple associations between the twelve characters and imagery will help understand their images and cultural origins. There is a bond hidden deep underneath the images of twelve beauties, forming a woeful aesthetic imagery. “ A Dream of Red Mansions” is rich in aesthetic atmosphere which contributes to its immortality. The narration through images also successfully created an aura that is hauntingly beautiful – from the central image, contrast image, supplemental image and associate image. By superimposing images, the figures are matured and given more charm. This way, A Dream of Red Mansions becomes a poetic text, deepened by its aesthetics. The group of images of the twelve beauties are the most outstanding, and therefore, worth savoring.

Abstract:
碩士
元智大學
中國語文學系
107
Shadow in the Dream of Red Mansions is one of the many spinoffs of Dream of the Red Chamber. Gu Tai-Qing, who wrote the novel in her later years, is considered to be the most prolific female poet in the Qing Dynasty. This makes it the first known Chinese novel written and published by a woman and preserved in its entirety to this day. This study investigated the novel’s context, the significance of its female narrative perspective, and the influence of the author’s fellow poets on its prose and its publication to analyze Gu’s motive for writing the spinoff and the difficulties she faced in the process. Furthermore, this study compared the novel with Gu’s works of poetry to determine the messages she wanted to convey through the novel. Gu’s poems reveal a dichotomous attitude toward fame; she was not keen to seek fame but nevertheless demonstrated a respect for it. This was seen in the novel’s use of famous literati for oblique references regarding the attitude toward fame. In the characters, conflicting attitudes coexist that are nonchalant toward fame and value the fame the characters have achieved. Gu’s poems clearly reveal her desire to be remembered by later generations. This desire, the novel’s descriptions of works of famous literati passed down for generations, her practice of incorporating her own poems into the novel and leaving her name as the author, and her efforts to preserve the novel and poems in entirety all indicate her desire to leave a memorable legacy. This is her true motive behind writing Shadow in the Dream of Red Mansions.

Abstract:
碩士
樹德科技大學
應用設計研究所
92
Abstract “A Dream of Red Mansions,” one of the well-known Chinese literary classics, was selected as the research subject, whereby the color makeup on the leading characters of this novel were designed and created by implementing new and creative yet scientific interpretations. The images, personalities as well as styles of these three fictional beauties, Lin Dai-yu, Xue Bao-chai and Wang Xi-feng, were studied and then elected as the studying subjects of creative makeup for their generally acknowledged sensibilities and uniqueness. In this research, the creative style of makeup was laid out on a drawing paper as 2-dimentional design, which was later on developed into a 3-dimentional experiment of putting the makeup on a real person. The research results can be well observed during the process of creation. Three female protagonists in A Dream of Red Mansions were selected as the research subjects. Their images and styles as depicted in the novel were studied and analyzed to establish their assumed appearances in real life. Questionnaires based on Li Ke Evaluation Scale were given to interviewees and the survey results were used to examine the fictional images (depicted by words) and the pictorial character images (depicted by pictures). Use the Creativity Tree Method to examine the object of this research and thereby point out the significance of each individual character in terms of the creative makeup. Apply the Imagery Graph to transferring the created images and pictures and then using the Morphology Graph to categorize the images according to the elements that constitute the images. After that, use the multiple regression analysis method to obtain the best combinations between makeup, images and styles of these characters. The next step was to integrate makeup into the character sculpturing. According to the different combinations of elements found in these three beauties, a draft of them with suitable makeup was laid out on a 2-dimentional drawing paper. The last stage of this research is to compare the stereotyped images with the created images of these characters and thereby seek the different interpretations of images in ancient and modern ages as well as the never-changed values since the old times. The research results revealed the following: 1.The analysis of fashionable design based on the imagery of fictional figures is required to present to readers in a systematical way, 2.Fashionable makeup denotes a consensus of people’s values as well as uniqueness in creation, 3.After comparing the old-time stereotyped images with the modern images of these three beauties, various interpretations and unchanged values appear, 4.Use the latest style of color makeup information to stimulate creativity and create more sensational stylish makeup.

Beautiful women do not necessarily have natural beauty, but certainly know how to dress themselves up. Let each day's mood brighten with the makeup. They are beautiful, not to please the man, not the expression of vanity, is the expression of women's love of life and self-esteem. Correct facial features, rich connotations, proper dress, coupled with self-confidence, a healthy attitude, this is the true beauty of a woman. Because of this, women’s business opportunities have arisen, and the most significant of these is the emergence of the bride’s secretary industry. The author himself specializes in the second year of secondary vocational school and is specialized in the beauty department. At the age of 15, he was an apprentice and a 22-year-old fashion styling salon. At that time, he had begun to contact the bridal make-up industry as a beneficiary. A. The overall makeup styling is completed quickly in the workplace. This is a very familiar task for the author. Currently, he serves as a bridal overall stylist in the Pingtung Home Business Vocational School Vocational Education and Pingtung Bridal Overall Shape Guild. Figure contestants have repeatedly won great results. Since the paper map can be used as a tool for the former practice of makeup. Therefore, this creation mainly uses historical characters as the leading role and uses modern makeup to design. It is hoped that the current make-up design will be added to historical figures, and the current painting tools and materials will be used to draw and increase the personal charm of historical figures; from history In the makeup design, we explored the performance of individuality and make-up. Using the four-paper map design, the historical figure: The Four Golden Dreams of A Dream of Red Mansions was presented with a modern make-up design to outline its personality and charm. It was found that the application of the current makeup design is indeed true. Can outline the personality characteristics and charm of historical figures, and paper design patterns can indeed be applied to the application of makeup design, but there are also places to pay attention to in use, because after all, the texture of the paper is different from the skin Although the use of the same materials and tools, I hope that the results of this creation can allow students to learn to use paper drawings in the future to have a good principle of compliance and use. The further analysis is to examine and reflect the mutual corresponding relationships between the interior decoration and the protagonist’s mind trip. A large amount of profound cultural background is widely revealed through the study of the planning ideas of the microcosm in the domestic living space. The great writing success of this poetic fiction is chiefly based on the applications of the mass realistic details, subtle narrations, and symbolic devices .All these mechanisms arouse involving common memory and experience between readers and creator no matter time or places through all senses, like seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, hearing. By introducing the aesthetic living of A Dream of Red Mansion, I expect the thesis may elevate the spirit of humanism, strengthen artistic taste, and enrich lives.

Abstract:
碩士
樹德科技大學
應用設計研究所
104
ABSTRACT This study takes the renowned “Four Beauties,” namely the four female characters – Lin Tai-yu, Hsueh Pao-chai, Wang Hsi-feng, and Chia Tan-chun – in the novel Dream of the Red Chamber, as the subject of my research. The study makes use of the text of the novel, depictions made by the two authors Tsao Hsueh-chin and Kao E, as well as research materials found in various publications. I probe and analyze these four characters as presented through their individual psychological status, speeches, and behaviors in order to imagine their possible exterior imageries and inner qualities. Then, on the basis of their differences, I use modern makeup designs to represent their images. In the creation of their facial masks via coloring applications and varied lines and shapes on eyes, eyebrows, and lips, I attempt to represent their distinct personalities in a concrete way. Through the use of modern aesthetics and psychological characterization, my makeup designs of the “Four Beauties” masks delineate these characters’ inner qualities and make these figures presentable on a fashion stage. In my analysis, Lin Tai-yu is a cautious diligent character and is also a girl that easily feels nervous and tense, so her personality carries the characteristics of being self-disciplined, discreet, serious-minded, as well as having a sense of responsibility. Thus, I choose purple as a basic color tone for the makeup design on the mask to represent her character. Lin Tai-yu has fine straight eyebrows that are thinning at the ends, a pair of sinking eyes with their corners slightly raised, a small mouth whose upper lip is thicker than the lower one, an exquisite nose without a protruding bridge, and a small oval-shaped face that is perfectly proportioned to highlight her beauty. As for Hsueh Pao-chai, she has such features as being outgoing, self-confident, active, showy, and talkative; also, she likes to make new friends, enjoys taking part in lively noisy occasions, and easily gets along with people around her. My mask design to characterize this figure is thus – her angled eyebrows show a personality of being persistent and good at planning, her big sparkling eyes with double eyelids resemble a pair of beautiful ginkgoes, her red mouth has an upper lip that is thinner than the lower one, and she also has a diamond-shaped face. I select bright yellow as a basic color tone for the makeup design of this mask. Wang Hsi-feng is an open-minded and highly perceptive fictional character. She is able to take daring actions to hurt others as well as herself. Wang Hsi-feng is full of imagination and fond of thinking; also, she likes things that are new and resents keeping the status quo. On the basis of these personal qualities, my makeup design for her is that she has a square-shaped face, with arched pencil-thin eyebrows, narrow triangular-shaped “phoenix eyes,” as well as thin red lips to show her elegance, grace, and calculating mind. For this complicated woman, I adopt red as a basic tone to design my mask because this striking color symbolizes her positive quality of being jovial and teeming with life, but it also marks her negative quality of being selfish, epicurean, manipulative, and revengeful. This story figure Chia Tan-chun has a personality that is kind, friendly, diligent, and cautious. She gets along with others easily, is forgiving, has such features as being optimistic, jovial, discreet, and also has a sense of responsibility. I create an oval-shaped face for this character in my mask design. This mask carries a salient feature of masculine handsomeness, has a pair of eyebrows with single eyelids to mark a strong personality, and has a mouth that has thin lips. For this mask I select blue as the basic tone for my makeup design. The last part of my study is the actual creation of these “Four Beauties” masks. In this part I apply the makeup designs to these masks and make them into works of cultural creation that are filled with literary interest and act as media of wonderful storytelling.

Redology, the academic study of Cao Xueqin's masterpiece Dream of the Red Chamber, is a mighty current of present-day academic circles, and numerous researchers in this field have given rise to multiple research data. Being a traditional Chinese floral artist with my understanding of flowers and cherishing toward classical literature, this essay aims to delve into the twelve beauties of JinlinginDream of the Red Chamber and the symbolism of flowers, further using the creation of Chinese floral art to interpret the flower of fate of the five beauties of Jinling. In Chapter 63Girls Feast at Night to Celebrate Baoyu's Birthday, Qing Wen takes one carved bamboo cylinder containing ivory fortune sticks with floral paintings. By lottery poems with floral paintings, fate and personalities of the ladies are closely connected by Cao’s words and the characteristics of flowers. By drinking games to draw fortune sticks, just like prophecies, the novel firmly focuses on fate of these beauties, the main scope for research basis of this essay and one of the key points. As not all beauties in the novel participate in drawing fortune sticks of drinking game, research area of this essay focuses on the reserved copy of the five beauties, Baochai, Tanchun, Li Wan, Xiangyun and Daiyu to discuss the relationship between their flower of fate and destiny as well as the use of the concrete hairpin of Chinese floral art to present Cao’s literary mind of “likening flowers to humans.”

The thesis is divided into three parts: 1) an analysis of translating “Герой” in different language, which is the important concept in Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics. 2) A discussion of the basic idea ‘polyphony’ of Bakhtin. Comparing several literary critic’s views, such as Wayne C. Booth, Liu Kang, Tzevtan Todorov, then focus more on Todorov’s idea, that consider ‘polyphony’ as an extension concept of ‘the dialogical principle’. 3) Analysis several parts of narrative in the Dream of the Red Chamber that are similar with Bakhtin’s ‘polyphony’, by applying what Todorov argued, ‘the dialogical principle’. This thesis plans to investigate the use of ‘the double in Literature’ and ‘Dream’ theme in the Dream of the Red Chamber. After these discussions, I hope to offer a similarity between what Bakhtin’s idea and some narratives in the Dream of the Red Chamber.

RCD, dated to Qing Dynasty, is a masterpiece in Chinese literature. It enjoyed its utmost popularity at the high time of Say-Song which was blossoming, the performance form various, moreover faced with the system change time.Because RCD is a vernacular novel, its narration technique is influenced by Say-Song from previous dynasties, rich in Say-Song element. Moreover,“Say-Song” is a kind of language performing art, uniting literature and music, it shows RCD novel in stereoscopic and animated way. Therefore, we have a large quantity of RCD Say-Song Work which spread over a wide domain of China. It is worth for me to generalize, collate and observe many research subjects about Say-Song literature and Say-Song music. 博士
中國文化大學
中國文學系
99
The study methology of this Doctoral Dissertation is based on Mr. Pi , Shu-Min’s study of the relationship of Suzhou Lee family and “The Dream of Red Chamber”(《紅樓夢》Hon Lou Meng), starting from this then divided into seven chapters to discuss in depth about the history of the study, the analysis about the relationships among the dude Lee Ding and Suzhou Lee family and “The Story of the Stone ”(Shi Tou Ji), concluded into four major study subjects: “Lee Ding theory”, “ Lee Ding, Zhi Yan Zhai and Baoyu The Trinity Said”(李鼎、脂硯、賈寶玉三位一體說), “The motive of Lee Ding’s writing about inner chamber illustrious biography ”, “Confirm Cao Xueqin as the writer of The Dream of Red Chamber Three motives of study: The Analysis Method about Really and Fictionalize; The Undiscovered Area of the study of New Domain; Finding the Meaning of the Study of Lee Family Theory. To establish a model that is based on Lee Ding as center, but is multi-dimension and progression, and interact with the Author, the Text, the Reader in the Narrative Progression, especially the interaction between the Narrative Strategy and the Reader’s own interpretation. Base on the series of study by Mr. Pi, Shu-Min about Lee Ding and the progress of plots, in the rhetoric model, Lee Ding posses three dimensions characters in the same time: Thematic (exist to express the main subject), Mimetic (as a real person), Fictional (as a fictional person). The reader also posses many different “level of reading” turns out to be a synonym for “ kind of Audience.” It posits four: the actual audience, the authorial audience, the narrative audience, and the ideal narrative audience response different angle of reactions. This model regards the view that is exchanged between the Author and the Readers. The purpose of this Doctoral Dissertation is to focus on the rhetoric by the Author and the result on the readers, also to interpret the relationships between “The Dream of Red Chamber” and Lee family. I have organized the essays into seven chapters: In the first chapter as an Introduction concerned with illustrating, situating, and articulating the fundamental principles of my approach. In the second chapter concerned primarily Mr. Pi , Shu-Min Studied Groundbreaking Discussion. The significance of research carried out, the parties agree with the academic study and supplement the arguments. Mr. Pi, Shu-Min elaborate literature and research with three " studying of the relationship of Suzhou Lee family” book and an overview of the results. The succeeding chapters are concerned with deploying it in the service of specific interpretive and theoretical problems. In this respect, my strategy of advancing the case for my approach will shift from direct comparison with other approaches to demonstration of the kinds of analysis this approach makes possible—or, more generally, to the way in which it can be an effective means of both identifying and resolving a wide range theoretical and interpretive problems. The third chapter, "A narrative as Rhetoric: Reading the Spells of Lee Ding’s The Story of the Stone” This Doctoral Dissertation offers essays based on the underlying conception of narrative as rhetoric that I have sketched in this Abstract, but each essay takes its particular shape for the particular problem or issue it seeks to address. A series of theoretical and explain the effective “Found unfit to repair the azure sky, Long years a foolish mortal man was I (Lee Ding). My life in both worlds on this stone is writ: Pray who will copy out and publish it?” (無才可去補蒼天,枉入紅塵若許年。 此系身前身後事,倩誰寄去作奇傳?) Subsequent sections will focus on he "Found unfit to repair the azure sky" in particular the point of interpretation and application of the theory. The fourth chapter, "Character and Judgement in Nattative and in Lyric: Toward an Understanding of Audience Engagement in The Story of the Stone the Jia Baoyu poetry of inquiry” I sketched an approach to character and narrative progression that seeks to describe the way in which the internal dynamics of narrative directed our attention to different dimensions of character—to Thematic , Mimetic , Fictional components. The essay by first considering "Ode on Jia Boayu poetry", whose progression is more lyric than narrative, and second by attempting to theoerize the role of “voice” in narrative with particulat attention to “ Lee Ding, Zhi Yan Zhai and Baoyu The Trinity Said ”. The fifth chapter, “What Author and a Rhetorical Theory of Narrative Can Do for Each Other: The Example of The Dream of Red Chamber” On Cao Xueqin ‘s “The Dream of Red Chamber” and Zhi Yan Zhai’s comments “The Story of the Stone ”, consider two problems in homodiegetic narration that both relate t the larger question of what constitutes mimesis in homodiegetic narration. In Cao Xueqin ‘s story, the issue is unselfconscious narration and paralipsis, Boayu telling less than he knows. I n Zhi Yan Zhai’s comment, the issue is paralepsis, Zhi Yan Zhai telling more than he knows, and its relationship to narrative reliability and unreliability. I attempt to show that understanding the rhetorical reasons for the paralepsis helps understand the ways in which the relationship between the narratorial and the character functions of homodiegetic narrators such as Zhi Yan Zhai can fluctuate considerably in the course of a novel. The sixth chapter, “Narratee, Narrative Audience, and Second-Person Narration: Read the infatuated Lee Ding ” (李鼎《石頭記》情癡公案) Bringing structuralist theory ‘s concept of “narratee” and rhetorical theory’s concept of “Narrative Audience” together, I attempt to show that the complexity of effects generated by Lee Ding ‘s story can best be explained by recognizing the complementarity of the two concepts. The seventh chapter, “Toward a Rhetorical Reader-Response Criticism: The Difficult, The Stubborn, and the Ending of Lee Ding and The Story of the Stone ” In the conclusion of the analysis about the relationships among the dude Lee Ding and Suzhou Lee family, I consider the problem of interpreting Lee Ding's character Stone as an instance of a textual recalcitrance that is designed not to yield to our efforts at interpretation. This “stubbornness," I suggest, has implications for my effort as a reader to come to terms with Mr. Pi, Shu-Min’s narrative.

Abstract:
碩士
育達科技大學
茶陶創意研究所
107
Abstract Tea art can be defined as the culture produced by the combination of tea and art. Tea feast is a fashionable expression of inheriting ancient culture. Tea feast exhibition is an important link in tea art culture and the first medium of communication between tea and people. Therefore, the layout and display of tea tables has become one of the important topics for tea people to learn tea. Tea feast design pays attention to the organizational coordination of four levels: human, tea, utensils and environment. These four levels are interlinked and complementary. How to add or subtract from each other has always been a topic of deep concern to tea people, and the performance of the theme of tea feast often has no objective and simple basis to guide tea people in tea. Greater breakthroughs can be made in the design of seats. In this paper, we will try to use the Actor Network Theory (ANT) as the methodology of tea feast creation with the theme of Dream of Red Mansions image in the design of tea feast. Actor network theory is simply the interactive link formed by the heterogeneous relationship between human and non-human. This link can show the importance of each link. Each actor can determine its location and presentation according to its characteristics, and then enhance the catering to show the clearest theme without dead corners. Secondly, it combines the cross-domain culture and art with the ancient classical Chinese literature Dream of Red Mansions, which converts the artistic beauty of written language into symbolic symbols and brings them into the design of tea banquets, so as to increase the aesthetic feeling and theme clarity of tea banquets, so that the public participating in the performance of tea banquets can easily understand the message that tea people want to convey and promote the tea party. Activities can add more fun. In the process of researching this creation, it is found that taking the "actor network theory" as the framework can avoid the deviation of the theme of the tea chair due to the difficulty in choosing the material or too many ideas of the designer in the design of the tea table. Through the creation theory of this tea mat, I hope this creation can do a little bit for the tea art circle. Keywords: Tea feast, actor network theory, Dream of Red Mansions

Abstract:
碩士
臺灣大學
中國文學研究所
95
This thesis is based on the main text of “The Dream of the Red Chamber” . Trying to find out the plots of the dramas used apparently or secretly and comparing the function of the traditional operas in the text with the substance or inner spirit in this book. It can be divided into six parts. The first part of the thesis is the prologue and introduction of this thesis, including the motive of writing, the concerning comments of the early scholars, and the main functions of the quotation from the traditional operas. The second part focuses on the role the traditional operas play during the process . Caosyuecin describes whether the love affairs of Baoyu and Daiyu or their lives of Baoyu’s 寶玉cingcing and Daiyu’s黛玉 cinbucing, he always derived lots of elements and inspiration from the traditional operas. In XiXiangji 西廂記, the chief characters fell in love with each other at the first sight. And in Mudating牡丹亭, because of the desire and loss of love , Du Li-Niang 杜麗娘was also indulged in the grief and joy coming along with love affair. For Baoyu and Daiyu, that is not only a totally fresh experience, but also a secret tunnel for them to express their slightest feelings. The third part is concerned with the meaning of the traditional operas shows, including the ups and downs of Jia and every characters’ fortune. The traditional Chinese operas contains the properties of literature and performing. They show the epitome of real life. The author picks up three traditional operas as the presages of Jia’s family, and compares Baisheji白蛇記 to the past, Manchuanghu滿床笏 to the present and Nankeji南柯記 to the future. It reveals the sense of helpless of human beings, who cannot escape from the regulations made by the unknown dominator and criticize the Jia’s family who never think of being prepared for danger in times of peace. All those female characters’ life in Jiafu賈府 is the struggle between will and fate. Even though they try their best to compete for a better life, the destined fate make their efforts become sarcasms. The forth part tries to find the connection between the traditional operas and the reason why male character choose“chujia”出家as his final choice. Handanji邯鄲記 and nankeji mean that it is hard for human to give up pursuing prestige and voluptuousness. Even we can abandon the desire of fame and wealth lightly, the desire of voluptuousness is rooted deeply in human’s nature and impossible to get rid of it. Therefore, after Bayou go back to QingGengFong青埂峰 and turn back to the stone with those experience in the human world inscribed on it. Baoyu’s significant“chanwu”禪悟 was inspired by Shanmen山門, because of the similarity in nature between and Baoyu. Lu Zhi-Shen魯智深 is“zisewukong”自色悟空;however, Baoyu is “youqingzhuankong.”由情轉空Actually, going back to Mt. DaHuang大荒山 is the last choice for the stone. The fifth part focuses on the role played by the dramas in the clan’s family. Appreciating traditional dramas is a crucial part of their daily life in Jia’s family, and it is also the common feature among the clan’s family during the end of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of Ching dynasty. Just as Zhang Dai張岱 , a man who had similar background with Cao Xue-qin曹雪芹 , recorded the same plots which is interlinked with “The Dream of the Red Chamber” in the book, Tao-An Meng Yi陶庵夢憶 . Although most of the traditional operas we can also find in other literary works, the book depicts in detail how the traditional operas become a indispensable part of their lives, such as their daily conversation or the literary creations the made. This distinguishing feature is merely seen in other novels, and also a unique part worth studying. The sixth part is the conclusion of the thesis.

Abstract:
碩士
東海大學
中國文學系
103
Myriad literature have been dedicated to the studies of Dream of the Red Mansions: from allegorical school in Qin Dynasty, investigative school in Republic Era to numerous schools at the present time. Gradual diversification of interpretative approaches infuse this classic novel with various perspectives. Amid the transitions of time and thoughts, literary theories gravitate toward the transcending text while viewpoints and values are constantly evolving. As beliefs and creeds enshrined in the pre-religion period, taboos are not merely an omnipresent existence in all aspects of lives, but also an omnipotent cultural force. Taboos have always reemerged from inundating torrents of civilization and recurred in narratives such as mythology, legends and folklores. By means of reasoning its very existence or accentuating certain undertones, taboos have been disseminated across classes and communities. The advent of narrative style paradigm of novels liberates taboo stories from subjugation as well as extends existing boundaries of folk beliefs and moral standards. Empowered by intentional writers, taboo narratives have transformed into a underlying structure in literary works, which in turns propagate poetic and in-depth notions.

Abstract:
碩士
華梵大學
中國文學系碩士班
105
Impacted by the societal changes, rapid industrial and commercial developments, there have been changes in family structures, and grandparent family has grown into one of the prevalent family structures. The concern on the plight of grandparents and challenges posed to grandparenting has led to the numerous distinguished publications. The Dream of the Red Chamber has been a renowned classic- novel and the studies of which is wide-ranging. The raising method adopted by the Jia’s in the Dream of the Red Chamber has recently come to the attention of academia, and papers concerning the “hit-and-scold-discipline” by Jia Dairu and Jia Zheng were also published for deliberation. The fascination of the Dream of the Red Chamber lies in the vivid depictions of the characters Jiarui, Daiyu and Baoyu, who appear to be people living around us. This paper focuses on the study of the grandparenting of Jiarui, Daiyu and Baoyu in the Dream of the Red Chamber. Incorporating contemporary psychological theories, this paper studies the status of the grandparenting of Jiarui, Daiyu and Baoyu, the impact of the grandparenting on the formation of each of their personality and their interpersonal skills, the pros and cons of grandparenting, and the reflections over grandparenting in a contemporary context. This paper finds that harsh physical punishment and scolding upbringing approached used by Jia Dairu and Jia Zheng only brings about the fear in kids and the parent-child alienation, but never can help Jia Rui and Baoyu to attain success and bring honor to the household as the older generation had wished. On the other hand, Jiamu the grandmother of Baoyu, pampered and over-protected Daiyu and Baoyu by letting them choose what they like to do, causing the latters become more self-centered and too weak to bear heavy responsibility. The discrepancies in raising methods between Jia Mu and Jia Zheng bring forth the conflicts in parent-child relationships. Viewing these types of grandparenting troubles from a contemporary educational perception, this paper provides appropriate raising method-- "high warmth and high control in democratic and authoritative parents"- to make it easier to foster a proactive and responsible child with positive social relationship. Ultimately, it is hoped that the findings of this paper can help more people to understand the children that are raised by grandparents, without having negative nor rutted perceptions about them, but instead sharing more love and care for them and thus creating a more caring society.

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺中教育大學
語文教育學系碩博士班
106
Dream of the Red Chamber is a renowned literary work. Up to the present day, most of the academic papers published inside the country have mainly focused and discussed four aspects, which are literary artistry, customs and etiquettes, clothing and food culture, and politics. Yet, the number of analysis in the language material, or even the discourse among characters, has been limited. This research paper is expected to provide a different perspective to the interaction among characters, psychological activities, and personalities through the discourse analysis between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, who are the main protagonists in Dream of the Red Chamber, at the same time discuss how the background of a person leaves an impact on one’s approach to verbal expression. In conversations amidst individuals, alterations in the forms of sentences and the conveyance of messages can result from various factors in the environment, including different communication skills and occasions in which communications occur, background knowledge and social relations between speakers, etc., as the context derived from the scenario in actual interaction is identified as the definition of communication that pragmatics discuss. Moreover, both the techniques to infer the hidden message from the literal context, as well as the approaches by which speakers are able to express the relative distance in space and in social relations, are categorized as an aspect which discourse analysis explore. This paper chose the first 80 chapters as the scope for the discussion, selecting and categorizing the dialogs between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, the main protagonists of the novel. The selected dialogs were then compared with researches regarding Dream of the Red Chamber in the past 20 years, analyzing the character’s upbringings, genders, social environments, emotions, and interpersonal relationships, before illustrating the difference between this paper and other academic papers and seeking reasonable explanations by observation, using pragmatics as the fundamental principle for the discourse analysis. In the end, the difference between Jia Baoyu’s and Lin Daiyu’s management of interpersonal relationships was demonstrated by organizing and discovering by the often-used pragmatic principles. Upon examining the language phenomenon analyzed in the 4th chapter in this research, Jia Baoyu can be found as a person being smooth and slick, and a person who adapts to change, as she has the ability to naturally change her way of speaking when encountering people with different types of identities. The 5th chapter analyzes the language phenomenon of Lin Daiyu, showing that most of her conversations are done with Jia Baoyu. Thus, other researches mainly emphasize the dimension of her jealousy and hostility. In fact, Lin Daiyu shows courtesy to the elderly and demonstrates humor in daily conversations. It is expected that this research paper enriches the discourse analysis in different contexts by providing the aforementioned viewpoint.

Abstract:
碩士
樹德科技大學
人類性學研究所
106
This research focuses on one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels, the Dream of the Red Chamber composed by Cao Xueqin. The research objective is to explore the ideas of sexuality and gender roles presented through the characters in the story. Through the perspective of interpretative sociology and hermeneutics, the results of the content analysis done are as below: 1. The depiction of same-sex affairs or gay fashion in the story is vastly different from the modern day homosexual relationships. After analysis, it is evident that the affairs do not qualify as homosexual relationships, which by norms, imply the involvement of feelings and romance. Most of the same-sex affairs in the story are purely sexual and reflect the male dominance of masculinity over weaker males. 2. The young men and women in the story express their sexual curiosity in different ways. The young mens’ sexual enlightenment, sexual fantasies, and masturbations are graphically described in the story while young women are forced to suppress their sexual desires due to traditional teachings and decorum. Furthermore, both sexes were not formally taught any sex education and derived their knowledge from banned books. 3. Polygamy, in the form of male ‘owning’ wives, is a norm for many olden societies. Men are allowed to revel in their sexual appetite while women are expected to be pure and sexually submissive. The sexual crime in the story shows the distinction of social status between men and women and the gender hierarchy in general. 4. In terms of gender roles, it can be seen in the story that societal pressure plays a big part on forming said roles. Once an individual deviate from the expected gender roles, society would be quick to judge and react negatively. Most men in the story are selfish and narcissistic but Jia Baoyu, the main character, has more feminine qualities and can be seen to enjoy the company of women. 5. The women in the story focuses on the men in their lives rather than themselves. However, Jia Tanchun and Yuanyang are exceptions as they display androgynous qualities that are seen as positive traits.

Abstract:
碩士
東吳大學
英文學系
99
Cao Xueqin posits two sides—reality and illusion—to his The Dream of the Red Chamber. The novel’s binary structure is presented in the design of Fengyue Baojian (Precious Mirror/Warning of Sensual Life), which operates to delude and enlighten its viewers both as a mirror and the novel itself. In other words, these two identities of Fengyue Baojian allow it to be an epitome or a metaphor of the textual body of The Dream of the Red Chamber. Fengyue Baojian’s deluding and enlightening features can be extended to other mirror images in the novel, including architecture, the jade and two Baoyu’s, and the narrative structure. This thesis is a study focusing on the mirror images in an attempt to cast a new light on the long-lasting issue of reality and illusion in The Dream of the Red Chamber. It is divided into two parts. The first part analyzes mirror images in the novel, such as Fengyue Baojian, architecture, and the jade and two Baoyu’s binary relationships. It discusses reality and illusion in Jia Baoyu and the human world around him. The second part analyzes the mirror image as the novel itself. Through the novel’s mirror-like structure, its reflexive, cyclic plot, binary relations and multiple titles, this part discusses how Cao seeks to delude, delight, and enlighten his readers through the phantasmagoric structure of the novel.

Abstract:
碩士
淡江大學
中國文學系碩士班
98
During the Ming to the Ching dynasty, novels were developed and defined as“secular”. In order to inspect the explanation and the appraisal of the secular novels, one should place importance on the leading secular novels of these dynasties. The ideologies of secular novels are human sentiment and human desire, and therefore this thesis represents the two novels, “Jin Ping Mei”and“Dream of the Red Chamber”, to be the representative works of these ideas. Moreover, besides analyzing the differences in human sentiment and human desire, it involves the secular novels of both the previous and the later dynasties. Through the contents of Jin Ping Mei and Dream of the Red Chamber, the two novels are not only the leading landmarks of secular novels, but are also influenced by previous secular novels, and the progenitors of later works in this genre. For this reason, the scope of secular novels should be broadened to Xu Jing Ping Mei, the pornographic novels, the Scholar-Beauty novels、Hsing-Shin Yinyuan Chuan、Yu Jiao Li、Haoqui Zhuan、and Lin Lan Hsiang. The dissertation has six paragraphs, and the following is the structure of this paper. The first paragraph is the introduction, which explains the secular novels’ depth of scope and materials. From chapters two to five, the central ideology is based on human sentiment and human desire. Moreover, these chapters refer to the common points of the secular novels, and point out their differences. In chapter 6 is the conclusion, which summarizes the development of genres within the secular novels.

Abstract:
博士
國立中山大學
中國文學系研究所
101
Abstract The Dream of the Red Chamber portrays a large aristocratic family, where complex, sometimes conflicting, relationships between the characters are a recurrent theme. As a result, Confucian virtues such as self-cultivation and family harmony serve as a moral standard for the characters. Confucian educational teachings, i.e., the literacy behind poetry, history, rites and music, are where the characters exhibit their literary talent, and this outlines the noble life that highly prizes such teachings. In addition, the author’s reflections on the “Five Cardinal Relationships” between clan members are a focus to be explored. The plot mentions that Seng and Dao brought the divine stone to the secular world, by which the novel’s immortal world and family life are infused with some thoughts and implications of Philosophical Taoism, Religious Taoism, and Buddhism. Some characters’ ethereal temperaments and their talent in rhetoric and literature correspond to the concept of one’s subjectivity and soul espoused by the Philosophical Taoism, whose form-and-spirit theory is also associated with dreaming, astral projection and self-reflection scenes. The Rongguo House and Daguan Garden, the two dominant settings of the work, endow it with artistic characteristics such as in the Peach Blossom Land or other utopian literary works. The Dream of the Red Chamber is significantly influenced by Religious Taoism; the book is deeply affected by its “predetermined destiny” theory, as could be found not only in the text but also in the scenes of worship of nature, ancestors, plants and animals, Taoist rituals and fortunetelling, as well as the immortals, belief in Heaven as a city, and longevity regimens. An analysis of the joys and sorrows of life and the cause-and-effect relations of the events reveals that the work was also influenced by Buddhism, such as: Three Dharma Seals, Dependent Arising/Emptiness of Original Nature, Causation Theory, the Heavenly Realm as part of the universe, and Zen epiphany. The above attest to the work’s abundant and well-connected thoughts; the literati have relied on Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism in seeking the values and directions of life for the past hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Accordingly, the three schools of thought truly comprise the work’s literary value and broaden its readership, making it worth a deeper exploration. Keywords: Dream of the Red Chamber, self-cultivation and family harmony, Three Dharma Seals, Causation Theory

Abstract:
博士
國立中央大學
中國文學系
103
The Dream of the Red Chamber starts by two legends, Nue Wo Stone on Ch'ing Keng Peak and the Oath between Wood and Stone, leading to the writing of “Story on Stone” introducing the theme of “qing”. Drawing on the discourses and concepts associated with Chinese gardens, as well as the archaeology of the Wood and Stone, this novel excels in innovation instead of inheriting the old tradition. Overall, the novel’s reflections on the Wood and Stone is inspired by the cultural biography of things, employing as the preliminary example the famous Taihu Rock, originated in various gardens of the 9th century, then classified in the Stone Catalogue of Cloudy Forest in the 12th century. The ugly shape of objects was integrated as part of the Elegance culture of Literati, further obtained high monetary value in Luxury culture, and finally became the signature symbol of writings on Chinese gardens. Then, the literary expressions in different times and genres are discussed to reveal the unique process of social life it experiences and how it occupies certain cultural space. Since the Ming, and Qing Dynasty, the Taihu Rock often appeared in romantic literary texts, formularizing a style of garden writings. In terms of the Dream of the Red Chamber issued in the 18th century, Cao Xueqin chose to focus on the Stone of Ch'ing Keng peak, demonstrating a refreshing aspect of spiritual revelations from objects, which bear the function of witnessing and recording events as valid facts. Via a stone of spiritual connotations, dreams, fantasies and reverie fate in the Dream of the Red Chamber have become thematically coherent with the Oath between Wood and Stone explored in the Peony Pavilion, creating a new writing style on Chinese gardens. The Grand View Garden is a Flower/ Wood Mound, and hence the Story on Stone refers to tomb inscriptions making the voice of unmarried women heard and recorded. Engaging the legend of Flora Faith to interpret young girls getting together in garden, the Grand View Garden turns to be a paradise for youth, refusing to grow up. The Flower Festival in spring is transformed to the Party of Flower Preserves, the Grain in Ear Festival and the Prophecy of Flower Poetry, forecasting the withering flowers as well as the appearances of ko–niu and Flower Fairies to suggest the liberation for girls of premature death. The creation of the novel itself can be explained as a combination of wood and stone as the carved characters on the stone became stone inscription, then turned into transcriptions by one Taoist monk, that were finally turned into the form of wooden letterpress. The abandoned stone comes in perfect square shape, providing index to the publishing contribution by Cao's family. Cao’s grandfather received the imperial decree to print the Entire Tang Poems, grandson and grandfather regarded printing books as honorable family business conducive to the preservation of both classic scriptures and private memories.
