Abstract:

Since the publication of Rod Dreher’s The Benedict Option, commentators have scrutinized his claim that the Western church is undergoing an existential crisis. Many doubt that the state of Western Christianity is as dire as Dreher thinks. But the more important question is, even if Dreher’s warnings of a crisis are inaccurate, what reason do we have for not adopting his suggested practices? This essay attempts to show that the Benedict Option, rather than being a retreat from the world as is commonly believed, is consonant with evangelicalism’s emphasis on mission and outreach. Specifically, it is an attempt to live out the parable of salt and light by grounding people in Christian distinctiveness so that their light to the world can shine truly.

Zusammenfassung. Es wird untersucht, ob die übliche Vorgehensweise bei der Validierung von Einstellungsinterviews zu einer Unterschätzung der Validität führt, und ob die alternative Vorgehensweise nach Dreher, Ash und Hancock (1988) , die eine Berücksichtigung von Interviewereffekten (z. B. differenzielle Mildeeffekte) vorsieht, zu einer angemesseneren Abschätzung der tatsächlichen Validität von Interviews führt. Hierzu wurden sowohl ein Vergleich zwischen den beiden Berechnungsmethoden anhand eines “realen” Datensatzes vorgenommen als auch mehrere Monte-Carlo-Analysen durchgeführt, in denen beispielhaft Mildetendenzen systematisch variiert wurden. Sämtliche Analysen ergaben allenfalls marginale Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Validierungsmethoden. Abschließend werden Hinweise berichtet, dass die Auswertungsmethode nach Dreher et al. (1988) in der Hauptsache Stichprobenfehler ausnutzt. Insgesamt lässt sich somit festhalten, dass auch diese Auswertungsmethode das Problem der geringen Validität unstrukturierter Einstellungsinterviews nicht zu beseitigen vermag.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine what factors China’s foreign aid allocation affected based on the case of Mozambique. Dreher et al.(2018), the most pioneering research on Chinese aid argue that China’s foreign policy interests determine its allocation of Official Development Assistance(ODA) flows and that economic considerations determine less concessional forms of official financing(Other Official Flows, OOF). However, existing studies examining the factors of aid allocation in Western donor countries show a mixture of factors such as donors’ interest and recipients’ development. This study argues that through the Mozambique case, China’s aid is also allocated by the interaction of various factors. Utilizing the Granger Causality test, we find that while ODA flows affect exports from China to Mozambique, exports do not cause ODA. In terms of OOF, the argument of Dreher et al.(2018) was not supported. OOF is not distributed according to economic purpose. Investigating aid to the agriculture, social infrastructure, health, and education sectors, this study shows that aid is distributed for different purposes depending the sector.

Observations of short term flux variations provide one of the few means of determining the smallest scale sizes in compact radio sources. The fastest variations are generally found in BL Lac-type objects, OJ287 being one of the best studied. In 1985 Valtaoja et al. (Nature 314, 148) found evidence for variations at a level of (typically) a few % with a period of in OJ287 at frequencies of 22 and 37 GHz. [Such periodic variability was, however, not detected at 5 GHz during one of their observations by Dreher et al. (Nature 320, 239, 1986)].

Abstract:

Recent VLA observations of the lobes of Cygnus A exhibit complex “filamentary” structures, with typical scale width ~ 1 arcsec (Dreher, Carilli and Perley, 1987, Perley, 1987). The filaments appear aligned with the magnetic field, as results from polarization measures, suggesting that the field may play a fundamental role in the process of their formation.We propose a mechanism for the possible formation of these filaments based upon a thermal instability connected with synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons. This type of instability was studied by Simon and Axford (1967), who discussed it in connection with the Crab Nebula filaments, and by Eilek and Caroff (1979), who generalized the previous study for application to quasar atmospheres.

Abstract:

SummaryIn the mouse histidinaemia has a teratogenic effect. Animals subjected to high levels of histidine in utero may develop inner ear and behavioural abnormalities typical of the ‘shaker–waltzer’ syndrome. Selection procedures for abnormalities and relaxation of selection have resulted in two histidinaemic strains: the Cambridge strain in which abnormalities occur in over 80% of animals, and the Edinburgh strain in which the penetrance of abnormal behaviour has declined to about 1%. Breeding experiments suggest that the differences are largely due to differences in the genetic backgrounds which modify foetal susceptibilities to the teratogenic effects of high histidine levels. High susceptibility appears to be dominant over low susceptibility in the present strains. There appears to be no interaction of maternal histidinaemia with the dreher mutation which is considered to induce inner ear malformation as a result of an early neural tube abnormality.

Abstract:

This study aims to re-examine the relationship between globalisation and economic growth in nine South America countries using the new KOF globalisation index. The new improvement version of globalisation index contains 43 variables compare to only 23 variables in the Dreher (2006) version which is more precisely quantifies the all-encompassing concept of globalisation. The new index of globalisation includes both de facto and de jure measures that would influence economic growth differently in certain countries. The data spanning a 17-year period from 2002-2018. Our baseline pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model finds that globalisation is positively and significantly associated with higher economic growth. This suggests that globalisation improves growth in overall South America countries. Hence, our key findings are supported with a battery of robustness tests, namely Fama MacBeth, quantile regression, and firm fixed effects.

Abstract:

We present 22 and 49 GHz interferometric observations of Hyd A (3C218). The source was found to have a very large Faraday rotation measure (RM) (Kato et al. 1987), and to be a dominant member of a luminous X-ray cluster with a large cooling flow (David et al. 1988). These characteristics are very similar to those of Cyg A which is suggested to produce a large RM within a dense sheath around the radio lobes as a result of somehow an interaction between dense intracluster medium (ICM) and radio jets and/or lobes (Dreher et al. 1987). Hyd A is the second example of Cyg A type source. In case of Cyg A, hot spots are the place where the interaction between jets and ICM occurs (Carilli et al. 1988). We then expect in Hyd A that similar interaction also occurs to form hot spots, and consequently that high frequency observations reveal structures of the interaction.

Abstract:

<p>En este trabajo analizamos la relación entre la independencia de los bancos centrales y la inflación en un panel de 182 países para el periodo de 1970 a 2018. Para calcular el grado de independencia se utilizan dos medidas, el índice de Garriga (2016), construido a partir de las leyes y reglamentos internos de los bancos centrales, y el índice de Dreher, Sturm y de Haan (2008), basado en la tasa de rotación de los gobernadores. Los resultados indican que una mayor independencia de los bancos centrales está asociada a menores niveles de inflación, tanto para los países de alto ingreso como para los países de bajo y medio ingreso, así como a una menor volatilidad de inflación para la muestra completa de países. Lo anterior contribuye a un mayor bienestar de la población, en la medida en que se evitan los costos asociados a una inflación alta y volátil. Los resultados son robustos al uso de las dos medidas alternativas de independencia, al uso de dos enfoques alternativos para evitar simultaneidad y a la inclusión de variables de control.</p><p align="center"> </p><p align="center">THE INDEPENDENCE OF CENTRAL BANKS AND INFLATION: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS</p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>This paper analyzes the relationship between central bank independence and inflation in a panel of 182 countries for the period from 1970 to 2018. To gauge the degree of independence, two measures are used, the Garriga (2016) index, constructed from the laws and internal regulations of central banks, and the Dreher, Sturm and de Haan (2008) index, based on the turnover rate of governors. The results indicate that greater central bank independence is associated with lower levels of inflation, both for high-income countries and for low and middle-income countries, as well as lower inflation volatility for the entire sample of countries. This contributes to a higher social welfare by avoiding the costs associated with high and volatile inflation. The results are robust to the use of the two alternative measures of independence, to the use of two alternative approaches to avoid simultaneity, and to the inclusion of control variables.</p>

У Рода Дреера получилась сильная, понятная и мотивирующая книга. Это настоящий эталон миссионерской (в светском значении этого слова) литературы. За ярким предисловием следует достаточно объёмный, но совсем не скучный экскурс в историю западноевропейской философии, в котором эта самая история постепенно складывается в линейную схему. Как считает автор, с позднего Средневековья и по настоящее время западноевропейское (и, как производная от него, американское) общество движется исключительно по пути моральной деградации и отхода от религии. Но это не эсхатологическая картина «охладения любви», о которой говорил Христос Спаситель (Мф. 24, 12). Речь идёт о якобы существующем кризисе одной из человеческих культурных моделей, вполне преодолимом человеческим же усилием. Rod Dreher's book is strong, clear and motivating. This is a true benchmark of missionary (in the secular sense of the word) literature. A vivid preface is followed by a rather voluminous, but not at all boring excursion into the history of Western European philosophy, in which this very history is gradually formed into a linear scheme. According to the author, from the late Middle Ages to the present, Western European (and, as a derivative of it, American) society has been moving exclusively along the path of moral degradation and departure from religion. But this is not the eschatological picture of the "cooling down of love" of which Christ the Saviour spoke (Matthew 24:12). We are talking about the alleged crisis of one of the human cultural models, quite surmountable by human efforts.

Abstract:

El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar los efectos de la apertura económica y la globalización sobre la estructura del gasto público provincial en la Argentina. En particular, resultan de interés los efectos sobre el gasto social y sus componentes como expresión del Estado de bienestar. La mayor parte de la literatura se ha ocupado de identificar esta relación a nivel de países y un aspecto novedoso de este trabajo es la extensión del análisis al sector subnacional. Otra contribución es la estimación de un índice de globalización provincial adaptada del índice KOF propuesto por Dreher (2006). Se estima un modelo dinámico mediante el método generalizado de momentos en diferencias, utilizando un panel de datos para las 24 jurisdicciones de la Argentina para el período 1993-2010. Los resultados indican que la apertura y la globalización de la economía impactan negativamente en la participación del gasto social, resultado esperable desde el punto de vista del efecto "eficiencia" versus el efecto "compensación", aunque hay indicios de políticas compensatorias del gasto en educación.

Abstract:

Locating information is a major component of student and adult reading. Dreher and Guthrie (1987) examined locating information in a text chapter presented via a microcomputer. The present experiment attempted to determine if there were differences in locating discrete information in printed versus computerized text. Possible differences may have been caused by method of presentation (computer vs. printed page) or the presence or absence of a menu at the front of the text. This menu presented areas of the text that could be searched (e.g., table of contents, text, glossary, and index). Eighty undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course attempted to find answers to six factual questions in text presented via either medium. Computer search tended to be more time consuming and less efficient than printed text search. No differences were found between computer and text conditions in total number of correct answers located. Computer groups searched the glossary more often than printed text groups. Possible explanations for these results are discussed and implications for future research are drawn.

Votive gifts from Sicily and southern Italy are most prominent among the objects discovered in Greek sanctuaries, especially Olympia, the most significant location for such material in Greece. Foreign objects from the west were an early focus of archaeologists working on Olympia (for example Karo 1937; Kunze 1951; Kilian 1977a; 1977b; von Hase 1979; 1997; Herrmann 1983; Moustaka 1985; Kyrieleis 1986; Söldner 1994; Strøm 2000; Naso 2000a; 2000b; 2006; 2011; 2012; Baitinger 2013; Aurigny 2016), in particular spectacular pieces with inscriptions, such as two bronze helmets of the central Italian Negau type (Fig. 84) (Egg 1986: 51–61, 198–99, nos 185–86, pls 108, 109a). The inscription confirms the dedication by Hiero I, the tyrant of Syracuse, following his victory over the Etruscans at the naval Battle of Cumae in 474 BC. As we know from Pindar's victory odes and from monuments dedicated at Olympia, the powerful tyrants of Sicily maintained strong links to the sanctuary (for example Philipp 1992; 1994; Giangiulio 1993; Di Vita 2005; Dreher 2013).
