Abstract:
A large number of impact experiments have been carried out at the Technische Universität Dresden in recent years in several research projects. The focus was on reinforced concrete plates on the one hand and on subsequently strengthened reinforced concrete plates on the other hand. Based on these investigations, two fundamental tasks arose: (1) finding an objective description of the damage of components made of steel reinforced concrete that had previously been subjected to an impact load and (2) quantification of the effect of a subsequently applied strengthening layer. In this paper we will focus on both. At first, the experimental conditions and program as well as the used drop tower facility at the Otto Mohr Laboratory of the Technische Universität Dresden are briefly explained. In the summary presentation of the main test results, the focus is on the observed component damage. Based on the observations, an approach for a damage description is presented. To define global damage, the stiffness of the investigated structural components before and after the impact event is used. At the end of the paper, the potential of the method, but also gaps in knowledge and research needs are discussed.

Abstract:
The presented paper deals with a series of impact experiments conducted in the drop tower facility of the Otto Mohr Laboratory (OML) at the Technische Universität Dresden. The presented research results were generated in three projects. A number of reinforced concrete (RC) plates which were subsequently strengthened on the not-impacted side were produced and tested. As basic materials for the RC plates, a normal strength concrete (C35/45) and conventional BSt500 reinforcement steel were used. Different material combinations, cement-bonded composites were chosen for the subsequently applied strengthening layer. The paper presents the experimental program, the used test facility, and the results of the experiments and their interpretation.

Abstract:
The 12th International Foamy Virus Conference took place on August 30–31, 2018 at the Technische Universität Dresden, Dresden, Germany. The meeting included presentations on current research on non-human primate and non-primate foamy viruses (FVs; also called spumaretroviruses) as well as keynote talks on related research areas in retroviruses. The taxonomy of foamy viruses was updated earlier this year to create five new genera in the subfamily, Spumaretrovirinae, based on their animal hosts. Research on viruses from different genera was presented on topics of potential relevance to human health, such as natural infections and cross-species transmission, replication, and viral-host interactions in particular with the immune system, dual retrovirus infections, virus structure and biology, and viral vectors for gene therapy. This article provides an overview of the current state-of-the-field, summarizes the meeting highlights, and presents some important questions that need to be addressed in the future.

Abstract:
After premature de-bonding failures of several roads in Germany, researchers at the Technische Universität Dresden developed a new testing device, the Dresden Dynamic Shear Tester (DDST), for quality control and characterization of the interlayer bond. The DDST is used to quantify the shear stiffness of the interlayer bond between asphalt layers at different temperatures, stress levels, and frequencies. The DDST was designed to avoid some limitations of common interlayer bond static tests (i.e., Leutner tests, torque bond tests, etc.) by simulating the dynamic loads experienced by real pavements and determining material parameters which can be used within mechanistic models. The paper presents the philosophy and methodology behind the DDST as well as the post-processing of the test data to obtain a master curve of shear stiffness of the interlayer bond. The master curve is determined by back-calculation of testing data by coupling a Fourier assisted finite element method with an optimization algorithm. The results of experiments showed that the shear stiffness at the interlayer zone was strongly influenced by the temperature, frequency, and normal load. At high temperatures the adhesion of the tack coat did not contribute to the layer bond. It was deduced that at high temperature and with no axial load shear stiffness was achieved only through aggregate interlocking and, when normal pressure was applied, through friction between the surfaces of the asphalt layers.

Abstract:
The empirical optimization of technologies for continuous annealing of cold rolled strips is very time, material and cost intensive. The properties of cold rolled strips demanded by the customer are adjustable only in relatively closely limited temperature - time regimes. Therefore, it is a complex task to increase the performance of continuous annealing furnaces without disadvantages for the product quality. This problem can be solved by nume-rical modelling the microstructure evolution in the cold rolled strip during continuous annealing combined with experimental simulation of the annealing process. At the Institut für Werkstoffwissenschaft, Technische Universität Dresden, in co-operation with EKO Stahl GmbH, Eisenhüttenstadt, a computer program signed as TFB was deve-loped. It is suited for modelling and simulating the recrystallization kinetics in cold rolled strips during continuous annealing. Furthermore, this program can be used for optimizing the annealing technology. For example, for IF steel the pre-sent paper demonstrates to what extent the performance of a continuous annealing furnace can be increased. Further results concern the improvement of the microstructure of the high strength microalloyed steel ZStE 380 Z by optimizing the annealing technology by means of experimental simulation.

Abstract:
Textile reinforced concrete, especially textile reinforced concrete with carbon fibres, was already been used for strengthening steel reinforced concrete structures under static loads up to now. The question is if the composite can also be used for strengthening structures against impact loads. The main goal of a current research project at the Technische Universität Dresden is the development and characterization of a reinforcement fabric with optimized impact resistance. But there is a challenge. There is the need to find the best combination of fibre material (glass, carbon, steel, basalt, …) and reinforcement structure (short fibres, 2D-fabrics, 3D-fabrics, …), but testing the large number of possible combinations is not possible with the established methods. In general, large-scale tests are necessary which are very expensive and time consuming. Therefore, a new testing method has been developed to deal with this large number of possible combinations of material and structural experiments. The following paper describes this new testing method to find the best fabric reinforcement for strengthening reinforced concrete structures against impact loads. The testing devise, which is located in the drop tower facility at the Otto Mohr Laboratory, and the test set-up are illustrated and described. The measurement equipment and the methods to evaluate the experimental results are explained in detail.

Abstract:
Abstract Glass edges result from cutting glass sheets and a further optional finishing. The mechanical interference into the brittle material glass causes flaws and cracks at the edge surface. Those defects have an influence on the strength of the whole glazing. Within the scope of a research project at the Institute of Building Construction from the Technische Universität Dresden, the grinding and polishing process is examined in terms of characteristic visible effects on the glass edge and the edge strength. Thereby a special focus of the research project is the impact of various polishing cup wheels for the chamfer surface of annealed glass. The article presents some basics about the processing steps of glass edges surfaces, introduces the considered grinding and polishing cup wheels and gives an overview of the performed experimental examinations. A microscopic analysis enables a characterisation of typical defects at the surfaces. Furthermore, four-point bending tests are performed to determine the bending tensile stresses at failure. The combination of both methods enables an analysis of the fracture-causing defect before destruction and a correlation between the optical surface quality and the bending tensile stresses. Additionally, the microscopy could be used to support the adjustment of a grinding machine and control reproducible edge qualities. The evaluation shows that a special development of polishing cup wheels for the chamfer can improve the surface quality and consequently increases the edge strength.

Abstract:
Frequently, the teacher training programs in Chilean universities are designed from a generic vision of pedagogical competencies (not necessarily specialized for a particular discipline) and in form of face-to-face activities. The new demands of the society and the economy, the constant specializations of the scientific fields, and the incorporation of new technologies for teaching and learning make that the typical contemporary forms for the teacher academic training must be reviewed and analyzed. The main goal of this paper is to present the results of a survey about teaching needs on Engineering Pedagogy in engineering departments of INACAP (a Chilean university of applied sciences). In general, the in-strument and indicators seek to obtain information about: (i) needs/demands related to engineering didactic fundamentals, (ii) requirements for the structuring and assessment of teaching-learning processes in a university context, (iii) requirements for the design and evaluation of face-to-face as well as online teaching-learning activities in engineering, among others. The project was led by the International Center of Engineering Education (CIEI) at the University of Talca (Chile) in cooperation with the academic staff of INACAP at the Talca campus, under the pedagogical support of the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany), Faculty of Education. Based on these research results and on the IGIP Curricula, a teacher training program for the academic staff of the engineering schools in online modality was designed and implemented.

Abstract:
Within the project“Lehren, Lernen und Forschen in Werkstätten” (Teaching, Learning and Researching in Laboratories) from 2016-2019, German didactic seminars were held in the “Lern- und Forschungswerkstatt Grundschule” (LuFo) (Primary Education Research Lab) at the Technische Universität (TU) of Dresden. The seminars, which were attended by primary education student teachers, dealt with telling stories to wordless picturebooks, reading aloud picturebooks about school or other literary themes. The student teachers dealt with selected picturebooks from the perspective of literature didactics, visual literacy studies and empirical research on reception of literature. They designed didactic arrangements in the sense of inquiry-based learning and invited kindergarten and primary school children to the LuFo to explore the stories told in the picturebooks together with them. The study is based on the student teachers' seminar papers in which they describe their projects, give didactic reasons for the selection of literature and analyse their interactions with the children around the picturebooks. Using the example of picturebooks about school, the study uses the Key Incident Analysis to ask which books the student teachers choose and how they receive them, in what form they discuss them with the children and how they shape the reading situations and finally, how they reflect on their own learning processes. The results give an insight into both the processes of reflection of the primary school student teachers and the processes of literary learning of the children.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract ‘It’s drafting time!’, but we are not talking about Patrick Mahomes, Alexis Lafrenière or Stephen Curry,1 rather about the implementation proposals for the Digital Single Market (DSM) Directive. This Directive caused a certain media stir in the run-up to it, and now the national legislatures need to implement the provisions of the Directive into the respective national laws. The Member States have until June 2021 to make the relevant transpositions. It will become apparent that very different approaches are being pursued in this respect, but that there are also similarities. For that reason, the sixth binational seminar has taken this as an opportunity to examine on 1 December 2020 the implementation efforts made by Germany and the Czech Republic in a comparative legal analysis under the topic: ‘The Implementation of the Directive on Copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market’.

Abstract:
