Abstract:
This thesis was stimulated by the requirement to decommission offshore steel structures in the North Sea Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, but applies worldwide, where Oil and Gas production has ceased. It initially shows the UK Government assessment of the scale of decommissioning in the UKCS where there are several hundred structures with associated pipelines, risers and wellheads that have to be cut into sub-structures and individual pieces and then removed. Factors other than cessation of production drive the sequence and timing of structural decommissioning, such as the price of oil &gas and

The long-term psychological effects of surviving a major disaster are poorly understood. A survey of survivors of the Piper Alpha oil platform disaster (1988) was undertaken to examine the role of factors relating to: the trauma; the survivors, and the survivors’ circumstances in relation to long-term outcome. Methods: Ten years after the disaster 78% (46/59) of the survivors were located, and, of these, 72% (33/46) agreed to be participate in a study conducted by questionnaire, diagnostic interview and semi-structured interview. In total, 61% of all survivors participated in this study. A fur

Advances in drilling technology and reservoir assessments have extended the requirement for the service life of those existing platforms even further. Extension of the life span of an existing platform requires satisfactory reassessment of its various structural components, including piled foundations. Since a large part of the Norwegian oil shelf has been active for over a generation, many fields begin to be depleted and the drilling operations requires tight down hole pressure margins. And by improving the pressure control for the drilling operations former undrillable wells becomes drillable. Which will make the the oilfields more profitable, and extend their life expectancy. It will also make drilling operations safer by preventing kicks and preventing environmental damages caused by mud leaking into the pore space.\\\\One of the most critical phases when drilling from a floating drillin

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform on April 20, 2010 resulted in the second largest oil spill in history. In this study, the distribution and chemical composition of hydrocarbons within a 45 km radius of the blowout was investigated. A complete set of hydrocarbon data were acquired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and from BP, including data from 16 research missions collected over eight weeks. The distribution of hydrocarbons was found to be more dispersed over a wider area in subsurface waters than previously predicted or reported. Several hydr

Abstract:
The reliability of ocean systems is dependent on organizational factors. It has been shown that low probability / high consequence system failures are overwhelmingly induced by organizational factors. However, no methodology is yet widely accepted for the evaluation of this phenomenon or its accurate quantification. A qualitative complementary approach is proposed based on the CANL (Complex Adaptive Non-Linear) model. In the first part, the understanding of organizational processes that affect reliability is sought. The approach is applied to several case studies based on published information

Abstract:
Torpedo-shaped anchors serve as foundations for risers and floating structures in the deep-water marine environment. Such cone-tipped, cylindrical steel pipes, ballasted with concrete and scrap metal, penetrate the seabed by the kinetic energy they acquire during free fall. Estimation of the embedment depth is a crucial part of the design process in that the pull-out capacity is strongly dependent on the strength of the surrounding soil. This dissertation presents the development of a procedure based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the prediction of the embedment depth of tor
