Abstract:
Youthful driving while intoxicated (DWI) is a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. In spite of great social concern about teenagers and DWI, definitive studies are lacking which characterize youth who are at a high risk for this problem behavior. The present study uses a large representative sample of over 11,000 New York State secondary school students aged 16 years and older. The relationships between DWI, alcohol use, other drug use and numerous social factors are explored using multivariate analysis. Driving while intoxicated is found to be a prevalent problem, occurring among almost a quarter of the high school students in the past year. DWI is strongly related to various sociodemographic factors such as age, sex, ethnicity and geographic region. Furthermore, DWI is found to be part of a complex network of adolescent problem behaviors including other alcohol-related problems, illicit drug abuse and school misconduct.

Abstract:
Objective: This study examines the prevalence of self-reported driving while intoxicated (DWI) among drivers aged 65 and older. Method: This cross-sectional study was based on baseline data from the AAA Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongROAD) study, a multisite prospective cohort study of 2,990 older adult drivers. Alcohol-related variables from the baseline questionnaire were examined in relation to demographics, health status, and driving behaviors. A logistic regression model assessed variables associated with DWI. Results: Of the 2,990 participants, 72.7% reported consuming alcohol, 15.0% reported high-risk drinking, and 3.3% reported DWI. High-risk drinking (OR = 12.01) and risky driving behaviors (OR = 13.34) were significantly associated with at least occasional DWI. Avoidance of hazardous driving conditions (OR = 0.71) and higher level of comfort during challenging driving scenarios (OR = 0.65) were less likely to be associated with DWI. Conclusion: A large number of older adults engage in high-risk drinking and DWI. Public health education and DWI-related interventions should include older adults.

Abstract:
A DWI prevention program for driving schools consisting of a videotape, slides, a textbook, and a manual was developed and evaluated. Effects of the program on knowledge, attitude, behavior intention, and self-reported DWI behavior were measured by means of a pretest, posttest, one-year follow-up evaluation design. Two-hundred and eight driving school students followed the program and participated in all three measurements. A control group of 228 pupils followed a traditional curriculum without the DWI program and also participated in all three measurements. Principal findings were that knowledge improved, attitudes and behavior intentions were already positive at pretest, DWI was equally reported by both groups, and there was a positive effect on riding with an intoxicated driver.

Abstract:
This study compares DWI arrest records for American Indians to those of the general population in Washington State. Within the period January 1987 through December 1987, 1,067 American Indians were arrested for DWI. This sample was compared for age, gender, and occupational status to 28,130 total DWI arrestees during the same period. The data indicate that American Indians were the most over-represented population as they were two-and-one-half times as likely to be arrested for DWI, compared to overall DWI arrest population. The population of American Indians arrested for DWI was three times as likely to be unemployed as compared to the resident labor force of all American Indians. This research supports the conclusion that DWI arrests may be viewed as a symptom of alcohol misuse, abuse, or chemical dependency for American Indians, and that a DWI prevention approach should include education, prevention, intervention, treatment, aftercare, and law enforcement efforts that are sensitive to tribal diversity.

Abstract:
Data on 148 convicted DWI offenders were analyzed to determine whether characteristics of intoxicated drivers have an influence on the likelihood that other people would attempt to dissuade them from driving. Results indicate that women, older people, people who are fearful or anxious, and people who are seriously impaired by alcohol are more likely than others to be the object of attempts to dissuade them from driving while intoxicated. Two explanations of these patterns are offered. One is based on the notion of perceived social threat. The other is based on the notion of perceived self-sufficiency (or the lack thereof).

Aims and MethodUsers of a substance misuse service were asked to complete a questionnaire, detailing information about driving habits as well as attitudes about substance use and driving.ResultsOf 120 subjects, 94 had ever driven, with only 36 currently driving. Fifty-six subjects had been charged with a driving offence but only 18 stated that they had been involved in an accident while intoxicated. The majority would not use drugs before driving and remain within a safe level of alcohol use. Most subjects stated that they were not informed of current legal issues concerning driving and substance use.Clinical ImplicationsUsers of a substance misuse service were reasonably responsible in their driving habits, however, it is still important for clinical staff working in such services to make their patients aware of the danger of driving under the influence of substances.

Abstract:

Drunken driving is a major issue due to which many road accidents are occurring. To overcome this many researches are going on and we also tried to develop a reflexive engine locking system In this paper we have developed a system through which when a person tries to drive by consuming alcohol will experience a automatic engine lock. By implementing this we can save lives of passengers as well as pedestrians and other people too. Today situation is worsening like for every thirty minutes accidents are happening and taking lives of many innocent people. To avoid this we are trying to implement a prototype for alcohol detection for drunk and drive. Based on threshold set, alcohol breath analyzer sense level of alcohol consumed by the driver and if it crosses the limit set it will automatically locks the engine. Due to drowsiness of driver and consumption of alcohol more number of accidents are happening. Because of this more lives are at risk. This design implements a model which saves lives of people inside and outside the vehicle.

Abstract:
Drinking and driving poses a significant issue in the United States. Repeat offenders are especially problematic as they are responsible for a high proportion of all drunk driving offenses and are more likely to continue in their drinking and driving behaviors. This study examines the effectiveness of the Safe Streets Treatment Options Program (SSTOP) in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, to reduce recidivism among repeat offenders. The results indicate that participants of SSTOP had significantly fewer convictions, fewer subsequent sentences to incarceration, were sentenced to fewer days incarcerated in jail for subsequent offenses, and were less likely to receive another Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) conviction than those in the comparison group. Policy implications and directions for future research also are discussed.
