AbstractFlash floods in wadi systems are a very important environmental issue, and their monitoring is necessary for many applications, including water resource management, irrigation and flood control. However, monitoring networks are very rare and lack spatial distribution features. In this study, image-based techniques were used to quantify and monitor flash floods in wadi channels by using two different methods. In the first section, we employed photogrammetry processing technique to quantify post-peak flood discharges by using a drone survey to build a digital elevation model (DEM) with a high resolution and calibrated and validated the model with a field survey (levelling measurements). This technique used drone-collected images to construct a DEM for extracting a cross-sectional profile and elevation points to calculate the peak discharge using the slope-area method with the Manning equation. In the second section, we combined the previous technique with the large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) technique to measure flash flood discharge by installing a fixed camera on a road bridge crossing a wadi channel and using a digitally extracted cross section from the DEM in the analysis. The results of those techniques show a high efficiency that is equivalent to that of conventional methods.

AbstractRecently, Wadi flash floods (WFFs) have happened frequently in arid environments, resulting in great damage the society and the environment. In Oman, severe WFFs have occurred repeatedly within the last 10 years causing a huge impact on human lives and properties. This paper aims at introducing the framework of an international collaboration project between Japan and Oman for WFF management considering sediment dynamics and climate changes. Four research groups were established: climate change (G1), rainfall-runoff modeling (G2), sediment yield and transport (G3), and sedimentation and infiltration processes (G4). Several field investigations were conducted since 2017 until now. The detailed field survey to assess the deposited sediment in a dry reservoir by using sediment bars, and infiltration test, as well as drone survey were addressed. Some of the preliminary results and findings from the field investigation is discussed. The results show there is an adverse impact of sedimentation clogging on the infiltration process at the reservoirs. Based on the historical rainfall data analysis, there is a systematic increasing trend of the annual average precipitation with remarkable cycles over the MENA region and Oman. The knowledge obtained from this project is expected to be valuable to understanding sediment dynamics at Wadi basins.

AbstractToday, many battery-operated cyber-physical systems (CPS) ranging from domestic robots, to drones, and electric vehicles are highly software-intensive. The software in such systems involves multiple feedback control loops that implement different functionality. How these control loops are designed is closely related to both the semiconductor aging of the processors on which the software is run and also the aging of the batteries in these systems. For example, sudden acceleration in an electric vehicle can negatively impact the health of the vehicle’s battery. On the other hand, processors age over time and stress, impacting the execution of control algorithms and thus the control performance. With increasing semiconductor scaling, and our increasing reliance on battery-operated devices, these aging effects are of concern for the lifetime of these devices. Traditionally, the design of the control loops focused only on control-theoretic metrics, related to stability and performance (such as peak overshoot or settling time). In this chapter we show that such controller design techniques that are oblivious of the characteristics of the hardware implementation platform dramatically worsen the battery behaviour and violate the safety requirement with processor aging. However, with proper controller design these effects can be mitigated—thereby improving the lifetime of the devices.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have brought many practical benefits during the last decades. Moreover, as technology advances, UAVs become more optimal in size and range. However, the threat posed by these devices is also increasing if people misuse them for illegal activities (such as terrorism, drug trafficking, etc.), which poses a high risk to security for different organizations and governments. Hence, detection and monitoring of drones are crucial to prevent security breaches. However, the small size and similarity to wild birds in the complex background of drones pose a significant challenge. This paper addresses the detection of small drones in real surveillance videos using standard deep learning-based object recognition methods. Our method approaches the drone detection problem by training the YOLOv4 model with modifications in the network structure, training strategy, and pre-anchor boxes for better small object detection. We also integrate the Seq-NMS post-processing phase to increase detection reliability and reduce false alarms. The experimental results show that our approach can perform better than the previous methods.

The considered discrete clutter includes land vehicles, birds, etc. This clutter involves in the radar echo signals and could not be rejected by using classical methods, for example moving target indicator (MTI) and moving target detection (MTD). As a result, this clutter forms the false alarms on the radar screen. To reduce clutter we propose a new method which is based on the target’s Doppler dispersion and moving characteristic. The study is integrated on a drone detection radar and is tested with a variety of drones in different moving scenarios. The test results show that the proposed method achieves a better performance than that one recently published.

Abstract:
In this work, we apply artificial intelligence to guide a drone to a certain point autonomously. Unreal engine creates a virtual environment where the drone can fly, and the algorithm is trained simulating the drone dynamics thanks to Airsim plugin. The implemented algorithm is Asynchronous Actor-Critic Advantage (A3C), which trains a neural network with less computing resources than standard reinforcement learning algorithms that normally needs costly GPUs. To prove these advantages, several experiments are run using a different number of parallel simulations (threads). The drone should reach a point randomly generated each episode. The reward, the value and the advantage function are used to evaluate the performance. As expected, these experiments show that a higher number of threads helps the leaning process improve and become more stable. These learning results are of interest to optimize the computing resources in future applications.
