AbstractTwo species of pilot whales are globally distributed, the long-finned (Globicephala melas) in cold-temperate waters and the short-finned (G. macrorhynchus) in tropical and warm-temperate latitudes. Two subspecies of the long-finned pilot whale are recognized, G. m. melas in the North Atlantic and G. m. edwardii in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, three types have been proposed in short-finned pilot whales. In general, it is assumed that pilot whales live in matrilineal societies composed of stable units/pods displaying bisexual natal philopatry, but inter- and intraspecific variabilities in the sociality of these units have been described worldwide. Moreover, there is inter- and intraspecific heterogeneity in life history and reproductive parameters, which supports geographic variation. To investigate life history parameters, sociobiology, and reproductive strategies within different populations of pilot whales, we reviewed the current literature and compiled novel data. We cover populations from both hemispheres and combine life history characteristics from strandings with field-/behavioral-based information such as long-term photographic-identification, social analysis with molecular sexing, and drone technology. This chapter contributes to improving our knowledge of the life history parameters between sexes and populations, interactions between animals of different sexes within units, social structures, and reproductive strategies in pilot whales. We explore pilot whales’ sexual group dynamics and social system and discuss whether they are strictly matrilineal in comparison with other “matrilineal” species.

Data and information obtained from low-cost uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly called ‘drones’, can be used to support coastal monitoring on erosion study. The Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques allow to reconstruction of a high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) useful to assess shoreline e dune mass, starting from the images acquired by UAVs. Flight procedures, acquisition methods and ground references are important parameters to be carefully managed to achieve the necessary accuracy. However, the size of the areas to be monitored and the frequency of measurements require demanding resources that can limit studies when they are insufficient. This work aims to investigate the best flight and processing settings for applying SfM for coastal monitoring. The parameters investigated are for example the drone type, flight height, ground control points (GCPs) position and post-processing parameters. The results of these evaluations and the proposed procedure are shown.

AbstractMulti-class object detection has a rapid evolution in the last few years with the rise of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) learning based, in particular. However, the success approaches are based on high resolution ground level images and extremely large volume of data as in COCO and VOC datasets. On the other hand, the availability of the drones has been increased in the last few years and hence several new applications have been established. One of such is understanding drone footage by analysing, detecting, recognizing different objects in the covered area. In this study conducted, a collection of large images captured by a drone flying at a fixed altitude in a desert area located within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is given and it is utilised for training and evaluating the CNN networks to be investigated. Three state-of-the-art CNN architectures, namely SSD-500 with VGGNet-16 meta-architecture, SSD-500 with ResNet meta-architecture and YOLO-V3 with Darknet-53 are optimally configured, re-trained, tested and evaluated for the detection of three different classes of objects in the captured footage, namely, palm trees, group-of-animals/cattle and animal sheds in farms. Our preliminary experiments revealed that YOLO-V3 outperformed SSD-500 with VGGNet-16 by a large margin and has a considerable improvement as compared to using SSD-500 with ResNet. Therefore, it has been selected for further investigation, aiming to propose an efficient coarse-to-fine object detection model for multi-class object detection in drone images. To this end, the impact of changing the activation function of the hidden units and the pooling type in the pooling layer has been investigated in detail. In addition, the impact of tuning the learning rate and the selection of the most effective optimization method for general hyper-parameters tuning is also investigated. The result demonstrated that the multi-class object detector developed has precision of 0.99, a recall of 0.94 and an F-score of 0.96, proving the efficiency of the multi-class object detection network developed.

To infer what exactly has changed to create this belief, the chapter uses ethnographic data to weave together the social, cultural and existential dimensions of medicine. The inference is extended to simplex society at large. Both technology and witchcraft are highly overrated in such society where meaning and feeling have bifurcated, and frames disappear from view.

It elucidates advances in seven key areas: machine theorem proving, machine translation, expert systems, gaming, pattern recognition, learning, and robotics. The defining characteristics of AI 2.0 encompass big data intelligence, swarm intelligence, cross-media intelligence, human–machine hybrid augmented intelligence, and autonomous intelligent systems. These features propel innovation and progress in sectors such as smart cities, smart healthcare, and autonomous driving. Big data intelligence facilitates AI learning through vast datasets; swarm intelligence underscores collaborative solutions for complex tasks; cross-media intelligence integrates diverse data types to enhance intelligence; human–machine hybrid augmented intelligence optimizes decision-making processes in industrial and medical fields. Autonomous intelligent systems, including drones, are rapidly approaching human-level capabilities. Abstract:
A preliminary reading of a number of Nubian novels reveals a basic peculiarity, embodied in the close relation between these novels and the nature of the Nubian society, so much so that this genre of writing has become a mirror reflecting the traditions of this society with its habits, customs and beliefs. Contemplating Muhammad Khalil Qassim’s novel, Al-Shamandūra (The buoy, 1968), the reader discerns techniques drawing inspiration from folklore with the purpose of approaching the intended social and political issues. This creates a form of intertextuality of the literary text and the actual life narrative of Nubian life, as the novel forms a narrative of the social customs related to life cycles: birth, celebrating the first week, children’s and adult’s play, marriage conventions and songs, in addition to rites concerning death and mourning. The novel registers as well the traits of the Nubian character and everyday life habits, social relations and conventional laws. Moreover, this novel involves elements of the River Nile folklore. This is also the case in Yehia Mokhtar’s Jibāl al-Kuḥl (Mountains of kohl, 2001) This special aspect of the Nubian novel, techniques of drawing inspiration from folklore, drove me to attempt a study of this type, revealing its manifestations in the two novels studied. This study is based on cultural criticism as this could be the best approach to this type of study. The domain of Cultural Studies is credited with taking interest in the neglected and marginalized, and what is popular and delightful. Through a cultural analysis of the daily lives of the Nubians, the various social and religious practices, folk traditions, marriage and birth rituals, and folkloric practices, the culturally marginalized and possibly persecuted find full expression. Through a cultural reading, the texts open up spaces for the marginalized socially, spatially, temporally, and culturally.

AbstractDespite the developmentalist prediction that with growth bazaars will give way to modern firm-type marketplaces (Geertz in JAMA 68:28–32, 1978), bazaars continue to thrive and play an important role in the lives of Central Asian people. Sites of both rent extraction and economic survival, bazaars comprise around 90% of the retail sector in Uzbekistan (Otajonova in Itogi: kak pomenyalsya riteyl i chto s nim budet v 2022 godu. [Results: how retail has changed and what will happen to it in 2022]. Spot.uz. 2021). Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, bazaars emerged as crucial sources of employment, particularly amongst women facing limited economic opportunities in the post-Soviet era. The shift from a planned to a market economy, coupled with weakened legal frameworks and a frayed welfare system, drove women into bazaar trade. Whilst some regarded this shift as a tradition revived, others viewed it as a transgression of gender norms.Whilst prior research on post-Soviet bazaars primarily focused on their institutional roles and functions, recent scholarship has shifted towards exploring the lived experiences of bazaar dwellers. Unfortunately, women’s voices often remain marginalised in these accounts. Drawing upon Scott’s concept of infrapolitics and Kandiyoti’s patriarchal bargain, I delve into the lived experiences of women traders in bazaars, showcasing the ways in which they challenge, renegotiate, and reconstruct prevailing patriarchal norms and gender roles. The bazaar, I argue, serves as a locus of gender norm contestation and norm building.

Abstract MR0175 is a NACE Materials Requirement that became an industry standard for Christmas Tree Valves in 1975. NACE altered MR0175 in 1978 to include other types of oil and gas production and completion equipment. Failures drove the early work and a disaster drove the 1978 version’s development and the haste that NACE used to finish and publish the 1978 document. The paper traces events and documents that predate MR0175 and that the oil and gas industry used to develop and write MR0175. The paper will discuss some of the circumstances that led to MR0175’s format, wording and ambiguities.
