Umulige fiktioner i den romantiske roman »Ein Roman ist ein romantisches Buch«. Impossible Fictions in the Romantic NovelIn the Romantic period, the novel is regarded as a literary form that, by poetological necessity, makes experiments by means of literary representation possible. Seen in an European perspective this is almost solely a matter of early German Romanticism, Frühromantik, where Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis by formulating the novel as a specific, modern genre, try to state a new, revolutionary aesthetics. The article thus points at three characteristic features of the novel’s poetics within this context: 1) the novel contains a double poetics of formal heterogeneity and spiritual homogeneity; 2) the novel gets its value through its inherent epistemology of world views; 3) the novel of early German Romanticism understands itself in a productive split of an utopian vision that never can be fulfilled and an auto-reflexivity exactly because of the knowledge of permanent unfulfillment. Further,the article argues, an aesthetics of impossible fictions evolves as the potential and heritage of this kind of poetics. In the last part of the article, a novel of the Swedish (post-)Romantic author Carl Jonas Love Almqvist (1793-1866), Drottningens juvelsmycke (The Queen’s Tiara, 1834), is read as way of representing, through the constitution of the main character, Tintomara, a principle of the absolute that displays the borders of novelistic representation.

Syftet med den här uppsatsen var att göra en berättarteknisk analys av Almqvists roman Drottningens juvelsmycke. Jag har i denna analys utgått från de begrepp som Gérard Genette presenterar i sin bok Narrative discourse och provat om de kan beskriva berättartekniken i Drottningens juvelsmycke. Jag har i uppsatsen också, ganska kortfattat, tagit upp en del andra aspekter av boken. Bland annat har jag berört romanens huvudkaraktär Tintomara, bokens genre och bokens grundläggande tema.

Det jag har kommit fram till är att Drottningens juvelsmycke uppvisar en mycket komplex berättarteknik. Ett av de mest uppenbara och intressanta greppen i boken är blandningen av episk och dramatisk framställningsform. Även om det dramatiska berättandet innebär en del problem när det gäller en berättarteknisk analys så går flera av Genettes begrepp att applicera även på dessa avsnitt. Min slutsats blir att Genettes begrepp går mycket bra att använda för en berättarteknisk analys av Drottningens juvelsmycke. Trots att jag i uppsatsen har kunnat identifiera ett antal berättartekniska grepp i romanen så är den dock alltför komplex för att kunna beskrivas enbart med dessa begrepp. Jag skulle faktiskt vilja säga att den är för komplex och har en alltför tät handling för att, tillfredsställande, kunnas beskrivas med några begrepp. Drottningens juvelsmycke måste istället upplevas.

Den hotfulla kvinnan är en tidlös karaktär, som i skiftande roller har uppträtt inom litteraturen, så som Medea i skildringen av Euripides eller Carrie av Stephen King.  Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka skildringen av hotfulla kvinnor i Lilla Stjärna och Drottningens Juvelsmycke. Valet av verken beror på att jag önskar jämföra kvinnobilden i ett för vår samtid så aktuellt litterärt verk som möjligt, mot en äldre, men likväl modern, litterär kvinnofigur. Annan skräcklitteratur och gotisk litteratur har, som i Kings fall, ofta valt att fokusera på övernaturliga egenskaper hos karaktären. Både Almqvist och Ajvide Lindqvist skildrar i dessa verk kvinnor utan till synes magiska krafter, men likväl bärare av stor mystik. Jag vill dels se om, och i vilken mån, verken anknyter till en traditionell skräckromantisk kvinnoskildring, men också visa att brytandet av normer i ett modernt samhälle kan vara minst lika hotfull som förtrollningar och svart magi. I uppsatsen kommer jag att föra en diskussion kring utgångspunkten att det gränsöverskridande blir skrämmande, även gällande genusstereotyper. När kvinnan inte kan uppfylla samhällets krav på hur en kvinna ska vara, leder det henne mot utanförskap och revolt. Hon ses som opålitlig, rentav farlig, och förmögen till att ta till oväntade handlingar, då hon inte passar in i ramen för hur en kvinna ska vara.

The purpose of this paper is to do an analysis of the characters and the theater/masquerade motif in C.J.L. Almqvist’s Drottningens juvelsmycke (The Queen’s Diadem), based on queer theory, by using Judith Butlers’s Gender Trouble. As an alternative to the Swedish, gender determined, feminine pronoun ”hon”, which has been used by earlier critics concerning the main character of the book, ”hen” is proposed. By using the pronoun ”hen” the mistake made by the earlier critics who, without reflection, state that the character is a woman, will hopefully be avoided. In this analysis, the fact that the main character Tinto – generally known as Tintomara – is an androgyne, is demonstrated. The analysis of Drottningens juvelsmycke also shows that the other characters of the book try to – by heteronormative patterns – define Tinto’s gender identity according to their own requests and purposes. The recurrent theater/masquerade motif, which is closely connected with the main character of the novel, reflects the drift of the gender identities between fiction and reality, between acting and real life. By not staying or getting caught in any specific heteronormative gender identity, Tinto reveals the binary gender categories ”man” and ”woman” as non-natural constructions, just as true or false as any other gender.

Maria Gripe’s shadow-series consists of four novels written in the 1980s and feature a character who present themselves as both as a girl and a boy. Carolin, also known as Carl has got a mysterious and captivating aura that leaves everybody fascinated and most people enamoured with him/her. Carolin shares many similarities with the 19th century author Carl Jonas Love Almqvist’s character Tintomara from the novel The Queen’s Tiara (Drottningens juvelsmycke). This essay examines the desire that is aimed at Carolin and explores the queer situations that arises as consequences of his/her cross dressing. I comparatively analyse the desire expressed in the shadow-series and The Queen’s Tiara to find similarities in who is affected by it and where the queer situations occur. The damaging effect of the desire is explored as well. The essay concludes that while most situations can be viewed as both heterosexual and homosexual Gripe uses genres and metaphors that amplify the queerness. Both Carolin and Tintomara are greatly affected by the desire toward them and get hurt because of it. Gripe and Almqvists charismatic androgynous characters bring desire and despair wherever they go, at least as long as they do not conform to society’s norm of gender dichotomy.
