Abstract:
This chapter discusses Beyer's percussion ensemble compositions. Between 1933 and 1942, Beyer composed eight works for percussion ensemble—a total of nineteen movements and about seventy-five minutes' worth of music. She composed her first work for percussion ensemble—the three-movement, thirteen-minute-long Percussion Suite—in 1933. The Percussion Suite is scored for Chinese blocks, triangle, tambourine, cymbal, bass drum, xylophone, rattle, castanets, and tam-tam. The first movement is characterized by the austere, quiet plodding of the bass drum, which begins and ends the piece, and is cons

Abstract:
This chapter examines the music culture of the village complex of Pakantan in south Tapanuli, North Sumatra, with particular emphasis on the Mandailing raja tradition. It aims to reconstruct the historical and aesthetic context of Pakantan's pre-Muslim ritual orchestral music in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the village was ruled by a chieftain (raja) of the original Lubis clan. The three ritual orchestras, which are differentiated by their respective sets of either five or nine tuned gordang drums or two untuned gordang drums, possess indigenous religious and aesthetic meaning

Abstract:
This chapter examines the gendang nobat ensemble in two of Riau's musico-lingual subgroups: the Indragiri-Kuantan Malays, represented by the descendants of the former Indragiri palace at Rengat, and their forest-dwelling loyal Suku Dalem (or Suku Mamak) subjects. Tradition holds that ever since the Malay palace at Malacca was founded in the fifteenth century C.E., the gendang nobat (nobat drums) have served as an indispensable symbol of the regalia that authorized the ruler's sovereignty. If a nobat was stolen or lost, the sultan who had owned it lost all his power. The chapter first describes

Abstract:
Abstract This book proposes that a figure who barely registers in film studies or dance studies offers valuable insight into ideas about “the body” and the reproductive labor that gives rise to images of bodies. The book is the first scholarly study of the dance-in, a dancer who executes a star’s choreography as cameras are being focused and lights set. While they share similarities with doubles and stand-ins, dance-ins do not replace stars’ bodies on screen, and they often serve multiple unseen roles, including as choreographers’ assistants and stars’ coaches, making them vital to the creatio

Abstract:
This chapter examines how the ergology and morphology of the variants of the rapa'i Pasè, the largest kind of frame drum in Aceh, relate to its performance practice, the genres in which it is used, the cultural memory, and the sense of Acehnese cultural identity among its makers, performers, and audiences. The rapa'i Pasè was traditionally played in ensembles with the singing of improvised texts at lifecycle and religious feasts and in intervillage competitions. It is said that only a man who can kill a buffalo with one sharp blow can play a rapa'i Pasè. This chapter first considers the defini
