Twenty Douglas-fir plantations, ranging from 5 to 15 years old, were examined on the east side of Vancouver Island. In all areas studied, salal was the dominant ground cover, and was suspected of being a major competitor with trees for water and nutrients. In each plantation, part of the area has been burned and part was unburned. Abstract Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) has been implicated as the root-cause for the corrosion failure of a large number of wet, dry, and pre-action fire sprinkler systems, often resulting in costly repairs and litigation. This paper presents field observations and laboratory test results for several different fire sprinkler failure investigations conducted over the course of the past several years in a variety of locations across the US. Field experience with assessment data, basis for diagnosis, mitigation and rehabilitation recommendations to prevent recurrence are presented.
