The surface and structural change of human hair fibre have been analysed to determine the oxidation effects for bleached hairs. Three types of bleached hairs (6% H2O2 bleach, 9% H2O2 commercial bleach and commercial persulphate bleach (contains 9% H2O2)) as well as virgin hair were evaluated with the increasing treatment time using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Reflective Spectrophotometry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. It is obvious that longer treatment times result in the greater surface and structural damage. However, comm

Abstract:
A new optical method, for the assessment of the optic nerve-head topography, was studied theoretically and experimentally. The motivation of this work is in relation with glaucoma, an eye disease that can lead to blindness. Glaucoma manifests itself by a destruction (atrophy) of the retinal axons, which in turn affects the shape (topography) of the optic nerve head (disc). Topographic measurement of the optic nerve head is used for diagnosis and tracking (progression) of glaucoma. The new technique consists of a dual-fringe projection system and a single-view imaging system. The dual-fringe pr

Bladed discs are very sensitive structures and the amplitude vibration of each blade can vary significantly from blade to blade due to a series of factors such as geometrical inhomogeneity between blades or material properties. These factors lead to bladed disks mistuned thus the forced response amplitudes can be much higher than the level predicted for a tuned assembly. Designed models need to be “validate” to predict the response of a real bladed disc within the tolerances set by the manufactures and this process is very expensive as well as difficult. This study is concerned with flow and stability of thin liquid films flowing over the surface of a disc rotating about a vertical axis. The work consists of a theoretical and experimental investigation into the flow of the steady-state film, and the waves which occur on it. The unsteady problem is also examined, using asymptotic methods, for the inception and propagation of waves of small amplitude with respect to the mean film thickness. The experimental investigat

Abstract:
Ground-based weather radars provide information on the temporal evolution and the spatial distribution of precipitation on a macroscopic scale over a large area. However, the echoes measured by weather radars are always a superposition of forward and backward scattering effects which complicates their interpretation. The use of polarisation diversity enhances the number of independent observables measured simultaneously. This allows an effective separation of forward and backward scattering effects. Furthermore, it extends the capability of weather radars to retrieve also microphysical informa
