Abstract It is difficult to provide an overview from the physical standpoint of the enormous number of Raman scattering studies performed under pressure. On the other hand, the experimental aspect seems too simple: only a slight modification of the optical scheme is needed to replace a sample by a high-pressure cell, especially by a small DAC. From this point of view Raman spectroscopy is one of the easiest high-pressure methods. However, there are many specific problems with weak scatterers and with studies in the megabar region.
