Kilmer, Jared Newman. "Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory and Proposed Personality Traits for the Dsm-v: Association with Mood Disorder Symptoms." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc271842/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current work assesses the relationship between reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) and Personality Traits for the DSM-5 (PID-5), to explore the degree to which they are associated with mood disorder symptoms. Participants (N = 138) from a large public university in the South were administered a semi-structured interview to assess for current mood disorder and anxiety symptoms. They were also administered self-report inventories, including the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) and Behavioral Approach System (BAS) scales and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5). Results indicate that both the BIS/BAS scales and the PID-5 scales were strongly associated with current mood symptoms. However, the maladaptive personality traits demonstrated significantly greater associations with symptoms compared to the BIS/BAS scales. Results also indicated support for using a 2-factor model of BIS as opposed to a single factor model. Personality models (such as the five factor model) are strongly associated with mood symptoms. Results from this study add to the literature by demonstrating credibility of an alternative five-factor model of personality focused on maladaptive traits. Knowledge of individual maladaptive personality profiles can be easily obtained and used to influence case conceptualizations and create treatment plans in clinical settings.

Abstract:
The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) is an emerging measure used to map pathological personality traits. In this thesis, the reliability and facet structure of the Swedish version of the PID-5 is evaluated. Further, the possible occurrence of higher-order factors of the pathological personality traits is explored. Using a sample of 275 observations, the facet structure and higher-order factors are investigated using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results show that the internal consistency, measured with Cronbach's alpha, is strong for the facets and adequate for the domains from the PID-5. The theorized facet structure could not be confirmed for the Swedish version of the PID-5. Treating the five domains as observed variables, support for a general factor of psychopathology and indications of the two factors internalizing and externalizing are found.

Brooks, Billy. "Rural Opioid and Other Drug Use Disorder Diagnosis: Assessing Measurement Invariance and Latent Classification of DSM-IV Abuse and Dependence Criteria." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2569.

Full text
Abstract:
The rates of non-medical prescription drug use in the United States (U.S.) have increased dramatically in the last two decades, leading to a more than 300% increase in deaths from overdose, surpassing motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of injury deaths. In rural areas, deaths from unintentional overdose have increased by more than 250% since 1999 while urban deaths have increased at a fraction of this rate. The objective of this research was to test the hypothesis that cultural, economic, and environmental factors prevalent in rural America affect the rate of substance use disorder (SUD) in that population, and that diagnosis of these disorders across rural and urban populations may not be generalizable due to these same effects. This study applies measurement invariance analysis and factor analysis techniques: item response theory (IRT), multiple indicators, multiple causes (MIMIC), and latent class analysis (LCA), to the DSM-IV abuse and dependency diagnosis instrument. The sample used for the study was a population of adult past-year illicit drug users living in a rural or urban area drawn from the 2011-2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data files (N = 3,369| analyses 1 and 2; N = 12,140| analysis 3). Results of the IRT and MIMIC analyses indicated no significant variance in DSM item function across rural and urban sub-groups; however, several socio-demographic variables including age, race, income, and gender were associated with bias in the instrument. Latent class structures differed across the sub-groups in quality and number, with the rural sample fitting a 3-class structure and the urban fitting 6-class model. Overall the rural class structure exhibited less diversity and lower prevalence of SUD in multiple drug categories (e.g. cocaine, hallucinogens, and stimulants). This result suggests underlying elements affecting SUD patterns in the two populations. These findings inform the development of surveillance instruments, clinical services, and public health programming tailored to specific communities.

Abstract:
Software systems can be represented as directed graphs where components are nodes and dependencies between components are edges. Improvement in system complexity and reduction of interference between development teams can be achieved by applying hidden structure analysis. However, since systems can contain thousands of dependencies, a concrete method for selecting which dependencies that are most beneficial to remove is needed. In this thesis two solutions to this problem are introduced; dominator- and cluster analysis. Dominator analysis examines the cost/gain ratio of detaching individual components from a cyclic group. Cluster analysis finds the most beneficial subgroups to split in a cyclic group. The aim of the methods is to reduce the size of cyclic groups, which are sets of co- dependent components. As a result, the system architecture will be less prone to propagating errors, caused by modifications of components. Both techniques derive from graph theory and data science but have not been applied to the area of hidden structures before. A subsystem at Ericsson is used as a testing environment. Specific dependencies in the structure which might impede the development process have been discovered. The outcome of the thesis is four to-be scenarios of the system, displaying the effect of removing these dependencies. The to-be scenarios show that the architecture can be significantly improved by removing few direct dependencies.<br>Mjukvarusystem kan representeras som riktade grafer där komponenter är noder och beroenden mellan komponenter är kanter.

Stewart, Shannon Marie. "Mental Health Problems in Parole Decisions: The Re-conceptualization of Mental Health Problems as Risk Factors." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/34918.

Full text
Abstract:
Deinstitutionalization has had an impact increasing the number of offenders with mental health problems within the correctional system. Furthermore, preliminary research claims that offenders with mental health problems are disproportionately denied when applying for parole. The reasons for this are not well understood. This exploratory qualitative research draws on 48 decisions from the Parole Board of Canada decision registry, four interviews with former parole board members, and observation data from 17 parole hearings to explore how mental health problems are constructed within the conditional release decision-making process. Against a risk logic back drop, this institutional ethnography analyzes the way parole board members understand and operationalize mental health within the decision-making process. Self-regulation, medication compliance, and the role of the expert were strong themes that emerged through a content analysis. By integrating symbolic interactionism and a governmentality framework, the current study explores how mental health in parole decision-making is influenced by individual, organizational, and macro-level risk rationalities that draw on neoliberal responsibilization strategies and "psy" expertise. The findings are presented within Hawkin’s (2002) legal decision-making framework. Policy and human rights implications are discussed.

Abstract:
This book is an attempt to formulate a sociological theory of the phenomena which is otherwise known as substance abuse and substance dependency in the medical field. The first step toward such a theory is a critique of how DSM-IV presents diagnostic criteria for substance abuse and substance dependency as if these criteria are valid and reliable ways of measuring mental illness and bodily dysfunction. I point to the fact that these criteria neither are valid or reliable variables for measurement nor theoretically grounded defi nitions of the phenomena. My point is that diagnosis is an elaborate way of disguising moral judgments as medical assessments of illness or dysfunction. The second step towards the formulation of my theory goes via my empirical study of nine men and women who call themselves sex and love addicts. By conducting deep interviews with them I conclude that it is impossible to talk about sex and love addiction without constantly referring to stereotypes and widely held assumptions of alcoholics and drug addicts. Moreover it is apparent that these men and women are making moral judgments about themselves rather than pointing to some form of genuine disruption which they cannot control. From my critique and my empirical study I am able to identify a number of areas that a theory of addiction, as opposed to the medical view where this phenomena are being broken down in two sub categories (abuse and dependency), must be able to handle to explain addiction generally and specifically in relation to alcohol, drugs, sex and other forms of social deviance. A number of philosophical hallmarks of medicine is also identifi ed and seen as part of the problem, therefore I mean that a successful theory of addiction must transcend the mind body dualism of Descartes as it is a cornerstone in the medical view upon and understanding of humans. By reconstructing the habitus and field concepts in Pierre Bourdieus theory of practice I mean that it is possible to understand addiction from an action theory point of view. This discussion is also broadened by a pragmatist discussion of the mind and a neo meadian theory of the emotional self. My conclusion is that addiction can be understood and explained within an action theory which focus upon individual as well as collective action and understand this as habitual practice that is partly embodied and therefore not discursive – habits of which we cannot easily speak is seen as one of the compelling components in addiction rather than a mythical loss of control which is nowhere to be found but as a rhetoric grip stemming from the AA view upon addiction as a disease.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The intricate and complex writing style of Machado de Assis’ novel Dom Casmurro create a unique and powerfully engaging reader experience. While much has been discussed with regard to narratology and reader-response theory in Dom Casmurro, Machado’s writing recalls many principles found in the cross-disciplinary field of experience design. Through an analysis of the novel using flow and co-creation theories, we see that Machado designs an extraordinary reader experience through narrational scaffolding and co-creative invitations. These elements engage readers in challenging and immersive ways, ultimately encouraging readers to develop their reading capacity throughout their contact with the novel. In Dom Casmurro, Machado’s experiential writing enables readers to work together with the author to create two significant products: both the novel itself and—perhaps most important—the co-creative experience the novel facilitates.

Abstract:
<p>Trusted Computing Platform Alliance (TCPA), now known as Trusted Computing Group (TCG), is a trusted computing initiative created by IBM, Microsoft, HP, Compaq, Intel and several other smaller companies. Their goal is to create a secure trusted platform with help of new hardware and software. TCG have developed a new chip, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) that is the core of this initiative, which is attached to the motherboard. An analysis is made on the TCG’s specifications and a summary is written of the different parts and functionalities implemented by this group. Microsoft is in the development stage for an operating system that can make use of TCG’s TPM and other new hardware. This initiative of the operating system is called NGSCB (Next Generation Secure Computing Base) former known as Palladium. This implementation makes use of TCG’s main functionalities with a few additions. An analysis is made on Microsoft’s NGSCB specifications and a summary is written of how this operating system will work. NGSCB is expected in Microsoft’s next operating system Longhorn version 2 that will have its release no sooner than 2006. Intel has developed hardware needed for a trusted platform and has come up with a template on how operating system developers should implement their OS to make use of this hardware. TCG’s TPM are also a part of the system. This system is called LaGrande. An analysis is also made on this trusted computing initiative and a sum up of it is written. This initiative is very similar to NGSCB, but Microsoft and Intel are not willing to comment on that. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a technology that protects digital content (audio, video, documents, e-books etc) with rights. A DRM system is a system that manages the rights connected to the content and provides security for those by encryption. First, Microsoft’s RMS (Rights Management System) that controls the rights of documents within a company is considered. Second, a general digital media DRM system is considered that handles e-commerce for digital content. Analysis and discussion are made on what effects TC (Trusted Computing) and DRM could result in for home users, companies and suppliers of TC hardware and software. The different questions stated in the problemformulation is also discussed and considered. There are good and bad effects for every group but if TC will work as stated today, then the pros will outweigh the cons. The same goes for DRM on a TC platform. Since the benefits outweights the drawbacks, we think that TC should be fullfilled and taken into production. TC and DRM provides a good base of security and it is then up to the developers to use this in a good and responsible way.</p>

Abstract:
The Arab Spring put several revolutions in motion in the Middle East and North Africa. However, Tunisia was the only country that succeeded with a democratization process, making the country a fairly new democracy. Simultaneously, independent research networks and organizations whose main focus is democracy and democratic values such as Freedom House, V-Demand the Arab Barometer are presenting worrying information about democracy around the world. Democracy is in crises - evident by the remarkable decline or erosion in democratic norms and practices. While scholars have already begun investigating the causes of democratic deconsolidation or backsliding in the context of western democracies, notably those of western Europe and the US, still little is known with regards to new democracies from other parts of the globe. To fill this research gap, this qualitative case study focuses on Tunisia, with the core objective to investigate whether or not Tunisia is experiencing democratic deconsolidation. By using the three criteria described by the political scientist Yascha Mounk in his deconsolidation theory, the result suggests that while democratic values are still quite strong amongst the Tunisian citizens, it is evident that a majority of the Tunisian citizens are experiencing institutional dissatisfaction and low institutional trust.

Full text
Abstract:
This descriptive essay aims to develop constructivist Role theory. Specifically, it examines the potential of applying role analysis to a case of two types of actors; marginalized citizens and their state decision makers. There has previously been little role analysis applied to domestic political settings, as opposed to internationally between states. Therefore, research has been encouraged in this area. The selected empirical case is the controversial Bakun hydroelectric dam project in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It involves the resettlement of the marginalized indigenous Orang Ulu people and is driven by the Sarawak state government. By analyzing the role conceptions and norms of these actors, together with the concept of power, a new perspective on their relationship is developed. The successful application of Role theory in this new setting and case is a contributing point of the study. The role analysis is conducted using a qualitative critical text analysis method; an analytical framework is established with which the actors’ roles are retrieved from the text material. The results are then analyzed, and the conclusion of the case study is that the actors have incoherent conceptions of their roles and norms, leading to a conflict between the two in which the government has the upper hand due to (illegitimate) power structures.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Further research directions are outlined.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Humanities<br>Arts, Education and Law<br>Full Text

Vogel, Dominik. "Dem Gemeinwohl verpflichtet? - Was motiviert die Beschäftigten des öffentlichen Dienstes?" Bachelor's thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2011. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2011/5155/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis theoretically and empirically addresses the construct of Public Service Motivation (PSM) and its relationship to other psychological motivation theories. The concept of Public Service Motivation states that employees working in the public sector are primarily motivated by serving the common good. Based on an empirical study this construct was applied to public employees in Germany.
