Abstract:

Abstract:
Cidade. Estética. Práticas críticas.

Abstract:
On the morning of 22 June 1922 Field-Marshal Sir Henry Wilson left his home in London to unveil a war memorial at Liverpool Street railway station. When he returned at 2.30 that afternoon, two young men, Reginald Dunne and Joseph O’Sullivan, were waiting for him. What happened next is best described in Reggie Dunne’s own words: Joe went in a straight line while I determined to intercept him [Wilson] from entering the door. Joe deliberately levelled his weapon at four yards range and fired twice. Wilson made for the door as best he could and actually reached the doorway when I encountered him at a range of seven or eight feet. I fired three shots rapidly, the last one from the hip, as I took a step forward. Wilson was now uttering short cries and in a doubled up position staggered towards the edge of the pavement. At this point Joe fired once again and the last I saw of him he [Wilson] had collapsed.Dunne and O’Sullivan subsequently shot three pursuers (two policemen and a civilian) in their attempt to escape, but, fatally slowed by Joe O’Sullivan’s wooden leg, they were caught shortly afterwards. They were tried, convicted and, on 10 August, hanged in Wandsworth Prison.

Abstract:
In this paper, we investigate the diffusion of oxygen in a spherical cell including nonlinear uptake kinetics. The Lane–Emden boundary value problem with Michaelis–Menten kinetics is used to model the dimensionless oxygen concentration in our analysis. We first convert the Lane–Emden equation to the equivalent Volterra integral form that incorporates the boundary condition at the cell's center, but which still leaves one unknown constant of integration, as an intermediate step. Next we evaluate the Volterra integral form of the concentration and its flux at the cell membrane and substitute them into the remaining boundary condition to determine the unknown constant of integration by appropriate algebraic manipulations. Upon substitution we have converted the equivalent Volterra integral form to the equivalent Fredholm–Volterra integral form, and use the Duan–Rach modified recursion scheme to effectively decompose the unknown constant of integration by formula. The Adomian decomposition method is then applied to solve the equivalent nonlinear Fredholm–Volterra integral representation of the Lane–Emden model for the concentration of oxygen within the spherical cell. Our approach shows enhancements over existing techniques.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Sulopenem is a broad-spectrum IV and oral penem antibiotic being developed for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Overall and Clinical Success in Patients with an Uncomplicated UTI at Test of Cure (TOC) and End of Treatment (EOT) Methods 1,671 adult women with pyuria, bacteriuria, and signs and symptoms of uUTI were randomized to sulopenem etzadroxil/probenecid bid for 5 days or ciprofloxacin bid for 3 days. Two independent primary analyses, each with a separate alpha assigned, were incorporated into the design of the study with the primary endpoint being overall success (combined clinical and microbiologic success) at the Test of Cure (TOC) visit. In the micro-MITTR population (patients with baseline pathogen resistant to ciprofloxacin), sulopenem was compared for superiority over ciprofloxacin; in the micro-MITTS population (patients with baseline pathogen susceptible to ciprofloxacin), the two agents were compared for non-inferiority. Using a pre-specified hierarchical testing procedure (Westfall 2001), the primary efficacy endpoint was then to be further tested if either superiority or non-inferiority was declared in the MITTR or MITTS populations, respectively. Results In the micro-MITTR population, sulopenem demonstrated superiority to ciprofloxacin (p < 0.001). In the micro-MITTS population, sulopenem was not non-inferior to ciprofloxacin for the primary endpoint, driven primarily by the higher rate of asymptomatic bacteriuria post treatment in patients on sulopenem. In the combined analysis of all randomized patients with an organism identified at baseline (MITTR+MITTS), sulopenem was non-inferior to ciprofloxacin. Treatment emergent adverse events occurred more frequently in sulopenem patients (all, 24.8% vs 13.9%; related, 17.0% vs 6.2%), accounted for by a higher incidence of self-limited diarrhea (12.4% vs 2.5%). Serious adverse events were similar on each regimen. Conclusion Sulopenem was superior to ciprofloxacin for the treatment of adult women with uUTI due to quinolone non-susceptible pathogens. Sulopenem was not non-inferior in the treatment of quinolone susceptible pathogens, driven by a lower rate of asymptomatic bacteriuria in patients receiving ciprofloxacin, but was non-inferior in the combined population of patients. Abstract:
Abstract Background Sulopenem is a broad-spectrum IV and oral penem antibiotic being developed for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria to allow for earlier discharge of hospitalized patients. Methods 1,395 hospitalized adults with pyuria, bacteriuria, and clinical signs and symptoms of cUTI were randomized to sulopenem IV once daily for 5 days followed by a bilayer tablet of sulopenem-etzadroxil and probenecid bid or ertapenem IV once daily for 5 days followed by either oral ciprofloxacin or amoxicillin-clavulanate bid, depending on susceptibility of the baseline uropathogen. The primary endpoint was overall (clinical and microbiologic) response at Day 21 [Test of Cure (TOC)] in the micro-MITT population. Results The sulopenem and ertapenem treatment arms were well-balanced at baseline. The difference in overall response was driven by a difference in asymptomatic bacteriuria occurring between the end of treatment (EOT) and TOC in the subgroup of patients with a ciprofloxacin susceptible uropathogen at baseline who received ertapenem IV followed by oral ciprofloxacin. No difference in overall response was identified at EOT [86.7% vs 88.9%, sulopenem and ertapenem, respectively; difference, 95% CI: -2.2% (-6.5, 2.2)]. 19% of patients remained on ertapenem IV as the baseline pathogen was both resistant to quinolones and ESBL positive; overall response for patients with these resistant pathogens on IV sulopenem who stepped down to oral sulopenem was higher [64/80 vs 55/84 on sulopenem IV/oral and ertapenem IV, respectively; difference, 95% CI: 14.5% (0.8, 27.8)]. Treatment emergent adverse events (all, 14.8% vs 16.1%; related, 6.0% vs 9.2%) and serious adverse events (2.0% vs 0.9%) were similar for patients on sulopenem and ertapenem, respectively. Overall Response at Test of Cure, micro-MITT Population Conclusion Sulopenem followed by oral sulopenem-etzadroxil probenecid was not non-inferior to ertapenem followed by oral step-down therapy for the treatment of cUTI driven by a lower rate of asymptomatic bacteriuria in patients receiving oral ciprofloxacin. Sulopenem, both IV and oral, was well-tolerated; its oral formulation allowed patients with baseline pathogens resistant to both quinolones and β-lactams an opportunity to successfully step down from IV therapy. Abstract:
Many coastal communities in the US use base flood elevation (BFE) maps for the 100-year return period, specified on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), to design structures and infrastructure. The FIRMs are increasingly known to have serious problems in accurately specifying the risk coastal communities face, as most recently evidenced during hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017 and Florence and Michael in 2018. The FIRM BFE maps also do not include the impact of sea level rise, which clearly needs to be considered in the design of coastal structures over the next several decades given recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sea level rise (SLR) projections. Here, we generate alternative BFE maps (STORMTOOLS Design Elevation (SDE) maps) for coastal waters of Rhode Island (RI) using surge predictions from tropical and extratropical storms of the coupled surge-wave models from the US Army Corp of Engineers, North Atlantic Comprehensive Coast Study (NACCS). Wave predictions are based on application of a steady state, spectral wave model (STWAVE), while impacts of coastal erosion/accretion and changes of geomorphology are modeled using XBeach. The high-resolution application of XBeach to the southern RI shoreline has dramatically increased the ability to represent the details of dune erosion and overtopping and the associated development of surge channels and over-wash fans and the resulting landward impact on inundation and waves. All methods used were consistent with FEMA guidelines for the study area and used FEMA-approved models. Maps were generated for 0, 2 ft (0.6 m), 5 ft (1.5 m), 7 ft (2.1 m), and 10 ft (3.1 m) of sea level rise, reflecting NOAA high estimates at various times for the study area through 2100. Results of the simulations are shown for both the southern RI shoreline (South Coast) and Narragansett Bay, to facilitate communication of projected BFEs to the general public. The maps are hosted on the STORMTOOLS ESRI Hub to facilitate access to the data. They are also now part of the RI Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) risk-based permitting system. The user interface allows access to all supporting data including grade elevation, inundation depth, and wave crest heights as well as corresponding FEMA FIRM BFEs and associated zones.

Abstract:
Delp, Michael D., Changping Duan, John P. Mattson, and Timothy I. Musch. Changes in skeletal muscle biochemistry and histology relative to fiber type in rats with heart failure. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(4): 1291–1299, 1997.—One of the primary consequences of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) after myocardial infarction is a decrement in exercise capacity. Several factors have been hypothesized to account for this decrement, including alterations in skeletal muscle metabolism and aerobic capacity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether LVD-induced alterations in skeletal muscle enzyme activities, fiber composition, and fiber size are 1) generalized in muscles or specific to muscles composed primarily of a given fiber type and 2) related to the severity of the LVD. Female Wistar rats were divided into three groups: sham-operated controls ( n = 13) and rats with moderate ( n = 10) and severe ( n = 7) LVD. LVD was surgically induced by ligating the left main coronary artery and resulted in elevations ( P < 0.05) in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (sham, 5 ± 1 mmHg; moderate LVD, 11 ± 1 mmHg; severe LVD, 25 ± 1 mmHg). Moderate LVD decreased the activities of phosphofructokinase (PFK) and citrate synthase in one muscle composed of type IIB fibers but did not modify fiber composition or size of any muscle studied. However, severe LVD diminished the activity of enzymes involved in terminal and β-oxidation in muscles composed primarily of type I fibers, type IIA fibers, and type IIB fibers. In addition, severe LVD induced a reduction in the activity of PFK in type IIB muscle, a 10% reduction in the percentage of type IID/X fibers, and a corresponding increase in the portion of type IIB fibers. Atrophy of type I fibers, type IIA fibers, and/or type IIB fibers occurred in soleus and plantaris muscles of rats with severe LVD. These data indicate that rats with severe LVD after myocardial infarction exhibit 1) decrements in mitochondrial enzyme activities independent of muscle fiber composition, 2) a reduction in PFK activity in type IIB muscle, 3) transformation of type IID/X to type IIB fibers, and 4) atrophy of type I, IIA, and IIB fibers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recently, using plant extract as a reducing agent for nanosilver particle synthesis hasbeen focused. This is a green technology utilizing the ready material in the nature to create thenanoparticles with good properties and uniqe quality. In this study, ginger rhizome extract wasused to reduce the silver cation (Ag + ) to silver (Ag o ) as nanoparticles with uniqe quality and evendistribution in the solution. The size of the particles varied in the range of 20-40 nm. Reactionconditions were investigated and optimized with AgNO 3 concentration of 3mM, extractsolution/AgNO 3 solution of 1/5, temperature of 80˚C, pH of 12 and reaction time of 30 min. Theresults obtained from the antibacterial assays showed that silver nanoparticle solution hadantibacterial ability with an average effective diameter of 10 mm. It also indicated that theantibacterial activity of silver nanoparticle solution on the Gram (-) bacterium (E. coli) is betterthat on Gram (+) bacterium (S. aureus). In conclusion, we suggest that the ginger rhizome extractcan be used to produce silver nanoparticles in mild reaction conditions; the silver nanoparticlesolution expressed as a quite good antibacterial agent and therefore could be applied in decreasingthe effects of deleterious bacteria. Keywords Silver nanoparticle, plant extract, antibacterial, Zingiber officinale Rosc.
