Abstract:
In around 1912 Gabriel Jouveau-Dubreuil, a young science teacher from French colonial Pondicherry in South India, visited the nearby town of Cuddalore in order to inspect the construction of a new Hindu temple. Since arriving in South India in 1909 he had been travelling to many temples and archaeological sites in order to understand the history of South Indian art. The modern temple that he visited in a suburb of Cuddalore at Tiruppappuliyur was not in fact new but a wholesale renovation of a nine-hundred-year-old shrine on a site sacred to Tamil Shaivas. This was just one of the many temples substantially rebuilt from the 1890s to the 1930s under the patronage of a wealthy merchant community, the Nattukkottai Chettiars, at a time of religious revival and growing Tamil cultural nationalism. The Nattukkottai Chettiars came from the villages and towns of Chettinadu, an arid region in southern Madras Presidency. This region was significant not only for being the provenance of the most prolific patrons of South Indian temple architecture in colonial Madras Presidency but also their builders, for many of the architects and craftsmen working on the temple at Tiruppappuliyur were from villages in Chettinadu. One of these men, M. S. Swaminathan of Pillaiyarpatti, was Jouveau-Dubreuil’s chief informant, one of the many ‘natives’ who were a critical and inextricable element of colonial knowledge production. The understanding of formal composition and terminology that Jouveau-Dubreuil learnt from contemporary architects and craftsmen and his observations of the evolution of architectural design contributed towards the first study of the Tamil temple for both a scholarly and wider public audience from the very earliest monuments of the seventh century through to those currently under construction. This article explores this architectural ‘renaissance’ in colonial Madras Presidency under Chettiar patronage and evaluates modern temple design through the pioneering scholarship of Jouveau-Dubreuil and his contemporaries.

Abstract:
This article argues that the brutal aftermath of the catastrophic Mississagi forest fire in 1948 enabled Dubreuil Brothers Limited (DBL), formerly of Quebec, to grow and develop while salvaging timber for the Crown. The Ontario government, so concerned with getting the project concluded, essentially tolerated sub-par performances from contractors such as DBL for the sake of expediency. The salvage shaped DBL’s formative years, but its success after 1952 was largely due to its drive and resolve. Part environmental history and part business history, the rise of Dubreuil Brothers Limited tells the distinctive story of a company that defied the stereotypical views of French-Canadian business. It may have been forged by fire but it remained viable through entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity.

Abstract:
The reign of Philip VI began with a meaningful recruitment of judges in the Capetian court. This coincided with an increment of the number of cases before the Parlement and the writing of the first treatises on its processlaw, the most famous of which being signed around 1331 by an advocate named Guillaume Dubreuil. Entitled " Stilus Curie Parlementi", this treatise shows the Capetian court at work and enables to understand the mechanisms of its organization. The "stilus" reveals the adaptation of this pattern to the rules of case instruction born out of the court's practice. Actually, between 1254 and 1337 the developments of processlaw and the chancery rules followed a science elaborated in canonical and roman law schools. As described by Dubreuil, processlaw was a norm applied in the Parlement but also ruling the royal jurisdiction and thus was taking part in the settlement of the state of law

Bodei, Silvia. In LC2015 - Le Corbusier, 50 years later. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/lc2015.2015.1128.

Abstract:
Abstract: In Les trois établissements humains (1945) Le Corbusier, with the ASCORAL group, describes the Green Factory as an industrial establishment organised according to « a biology of circulation, a composition of buildings and efficiency », that « newly reintroduces natural conditions around the workplace ». These are important words that highlight some crucial themes of the social thought of the XX century on which Le Corbusier had reflected a long time in order to create new architectural and urban solutions. The article traces and summarises these particular aspects of the architect's thought process through the different urban models of his studies, to then dwell especially on the idea of the Green Factory and the “linear industrial city ”, applied to the project for the arms factory in Aubusson (1940). Here trees, landscape, circulation and spaces give work a different and alternative meaning that is very distant to the mechanical rhythms of the production line. This concept is nurtured by cultural and architectural references, amongst which figures that of the trade unionist and factory worker Hyacinthe Dubreuil. Le Corbusier translates Dubreuil's thought in a project for a factory that wishes to conciliate functional machinism with nature, by using "organic" compositive solutions and relationships rather than mechanical ones. Palabras clave: establecimiento industrial, modelos urbanos, paisaje, espacios de trabajo. Keywords: industrial establishment, urban models, landscape, workspaces.
