Abstract:
In this article, we use an adapted version of Wayne Sandholtz’s cycle of normative change to examine the dynamics of contestation of norms against incapacitating chemical agents and riot control agents, often imprecisely grouped together under the term ‘non-lethal chemical weapons’. We draw on a concept-driven analysis of statements and in-depth interviews with individual stakeholders to track the gradual development of the issue towards norm change within the Chemical Weapons Convention. Our findings highlight several key factors conducive to normative change, particularly the role of the Dubrovka incident as the ‘deviant event’, discursive decoupling of the two classes of chemicals, and new framing and ‘rebranding’ of incapacitating chemical agents as ‘CNS-acting chemicals’. At the same time, we also examine factors that significantly slowed down attempts by norm entrepreneurs to attract attention to the issue, such as the saliency of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, which effectively sidelined the problem of ‘non-lethal’ agents in the overall debate.

Abstract:
Introduction. The ability of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies to neutralize the virus is the primary indicator of their specific activity. The test for virus neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) is much needed in different biomedical studies. The aim of the study is to find optimum conditions for microscopic and spectrophotometric detection of SARSCoV-2 NAbs by inhibition of cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell cultures.Materials and methods. Blood sera collected from COVID-19 convalescent patients and healthy individuals (n = 96) were tested using the ELISA method. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, Dubrovka strain (GenBank accession no. MW514307.1) was grown in culture medium of Vero cell line CCL-81 (ATCC). Real-time RT-PCR, ELISA, and Sanger sequencing were used for detection of the virus. The results of the neutralization test (NT) were assessed through the microscopic examination for CPE and by the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay.Results. SARS-CoV-2 was isolated from a COVID-19 patient and adapted to grow in cell culture. At a low dose of infection (MOI = 0.00001), the virus caused a pronounced CPE with the cell viability less than 3%, thus making it possible to assess NT results by CPE inhibition. The NT and ELISA-based comparative study of sera showed positive correlation between virus NAb titers and Nab titers to S-protein RBD (Spearman’s r = 0.714; p < 0.001). The results of NAbs microscopic and spectrophotometric detection (the MTT assay) also demonstrated positive correlation (Spearman’s r = 0.963; p < 0.05).Conclusion. The SARS-CoV-2 virus adapted to Vero cell culture served to develop a NAb titer assessment system, which can be used both in microscopic studies and for an MTT assay in spectrophotometric studies. The MTT assay provides automated reading of NT results, optimizes the statistical analysis of the obtained data, and minimizes subjectivity in assessment of results. Being a vital dye, MTT penetrates only viable cells, thus contributing to the reliability of the obtained results compared to other dyes.

Abstract:
Background: Vaccination is the most effective tool for reducing the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19. Particular interest is the development of whole-virion inactivated vaccines, since such vaccines include a complete set of viral structural proteins. One of the requirements for the whole-virion vaccines is the guarantee of complete virus inactivation while maintaining the native conformation of protective antigens. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of ultraviolet (UV) treatment on the morphology, antigenic and immunogenic properties of the SARS-CoV-2. Methods: SARS-CoV-2, strain "Dubrovka" (GenBank No.: MW514307.1), grown in Vero CCL81 cell culture (ATCC). Viral reproduction was monitored by real-time qRT-PCR, ELISA and virus titration in Vero cells. Virus was inactivated by treating with ultraviolet light for 5 minutes using a standard biosafety cabinet UV irradiator. Virus inactivation control was performed by three "blind" passages in Vero cells. Clarified viral material was concentrated on Amicon MWCO 100 kDa (Millipore) columns. Negatively stained with uranyl acetate viral preparation was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mice were immunized with a UV-inactivated virus subcutaneously in two variants (5 animals per group) - with and without Freund's adjuvant, twice with an interval between immunizations of 2 weeks. The titer of virus-neutralizing antibodies in mouse sera was determined in Vero cell culture. Results: Preparation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with a titer of 7.5 lg TCID50/ml and concentration of viral RNA of 8.5 lg copies/ml was obtained in Vero cells. After UV-treatment the presence in the prepapation of SARS-CoV-2 antigen was confirmed by ELISA with a set of COVID-19 convalescent sera. The particles with coronavirus morphodiagnostic signs were imaged by TEM - rounded shape with characteristic spikes of 12-15 nm on the envelope, the diameter of the virion was 90-110 nm. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in the sera of all immunized mice, whereas in animals of the control group neutralizing antibodies were not detected. Neutralizing antibodies titer was significantly higher in animals immunized by a virus with Freund's adjuvant - on average 448, than without adjuvant - 64 (p<0.01). Conclusion: Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 by UV light completely inactivates its infectivity, while retaining the typical coronavirus virions morphology, antigenic properties, and ability to induce in mice a synthesis of neutralizing antibodies.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Dubrovin–Zhang hierarchy is a Hamiltonian infinite-dimensional integrable system associated to a semi-simple cohomological field theory or, alternatively, to a semi-simple Dubrovin–Frobenius manifold. Under an extra assumption of homogeneity, Dubrovin and Zhang conjectured that there exists a second Poisson bracket that endows their hierarchy with a bi-Hamiltonian structure. More precisely, they gave a construction for the second bracket, but the polynomiality of its coefficients in the dispersion parameter expansion is yet to be proved. In this paper we use the bi-Hamiltonian recursion and a set of relations in the tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves derived by Liu and Pandharipande in order to analyze the second Poisson bracket of Dubrovin and Zhang. We give a new proof of a theorem of Dubrovin and Zhang that the coefficients of the dispersion parameter expansion of the second bracket are rational functions with prescribed singularities. We also prove that all terms in the expansion of the second bracket in the dispersion parameter that cannot be realized by polynomials because they have negative degree do vanish, thus partly confirming the conjecture of Dubrovin and Zhang.

Abstract:
We introduce the most general version of Dubrovin-type equations for divisors on a hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal K_g$ of arbitrary genus $g\in\boldsymbol N$, and provide a new argument for linearizing the corresponding completely integrable flows. Detailed applications to completely integrable systems, including the KdV, AKNS, Toda, and the combined sine-Gordon and mKdV hierarchies, are made. These investigations uncover a new principle for $1+1$-dimensional integrable soliton equations in the sense that the Dubrovin equations, combined with appropriate trace formulas, encode all hierarchies of soliton equations associated with hyperelliptic curves. In other words, completely integrable hierarchies of soliton equations determine Dubrovin equations and associated trace formulas and, vice versa, Dubrovin-type equations combined with trace formulas permit the construction of hierarchies of soliton equations.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about terrorism metaphorically conceptualised as drama, theatre, spectacle and performance. It focuses on terrorism as a process of communication aimed at manipulating political attitude and behaviour. Even though it is terrorist actors who usually initiate that communication, various audiences play an important part in it, too. Not only do they receive and interpret the terrorist message, but they also have an impact on the content of that message and how it is transmitted. What attests to an important role of audience in terrorism is that in order for terrorism to work, those watching – the audience – need to change their behaviour to suit the political goals of terrorists. Arguably, if it were not for the people who alter their political behaviour as a result of having been terrorized, terrorism would not work, not to mention succeed. Another reason why there can be no terrorism without an audience is because the necessary presence of an audience is exactly what differentiates terrorism from other forms of political violence, such as war, secret killings or torture. While, at least for the time being, terrorism research remains “actor-focused” (Hülsse and Spencer, 2008), there is clearly a need to make it more “audience-focused”, to reflect the importance of the audience in terrorism, as highlighted above. This thesis examines the extent to which this can be achieved using the metaphors of drama, theatre, spectacle and performance. By applying the four dramaturgical metaphors to the terrorist attacks in Budyonnovsk, Dubrovka and Beslan, it investigates the potential of the metaphors to enhance the understanding of the dynamics between terrorism and counter-terrorism as well as the interplay between their respective actors and audiences.

Abstract: Dubrovin valuation rings in simple artinian rings are studied topologically. The motivation is the Theorem due to Kowalski and Dürbaum which ensures that any V-topology over a field is generated by means of a valuation ring or an absolute value of the field. Beginning from Dubrovin valuation ring R in the simple artinian ring Q, a topology namely R-ideal topology is defined. Properties of the R-ideal topology are proved, and this topology is connected with J(R)-adic topology, and also with the topology produced by a value function in ring Q. The concept of V-topology for artinian simple ring is introducted in order to obtain a classification of V-topologies in Q. These V-topologies are generated exactly by Dubrovin valuation rings or norms in Q. It is also shown that every V-topology in Q is locally bounded. The topologies generated by Dubrovin valuation rings in Q are characterized through locally bounded topologies with a bounded neighbourhood of zero that is closed by sums, and the restriction of this topology over your center is a V-topogical field

Abstract: In this thesis work we study the connection between two theories of noncommutative valuation: Dubrovin valuation rings and gauges. Dubrovin valuation rings were introduced in 1982 as a generalization of invariant valuation rings to Artinian simple rings. Gauges are valuation-like maps that can be defined not only on division algebras, but more generally, on finite-dimensional semisimple algebras over valued fields. Gauges were introduced much more recently in 2010 by Tignol and Wadsworth. Just as for valuations on fields, we can define a ring associated to a gauge, which we call gauge ring. Arithmetic properties of the gauge ring are studied. We show that the gauge ring is always a semi-local order integral over its center. We also describe the gauge ring with respect to composition of gauges and scalar extension. We introduce the concept of minimal gauge on central simple algebras, which are gauges that the degree zero part of the associated graded ring has the least number of simple components. We show that the ring of a minimal gauge is an intersection of a family of Dubrovin valuation rings having the intersection property. The intersection property was introduced by Gräter in 1992. We also proved that if we start with a family of Dubrovin valuation rings having the intersection property, then there exist a minimal gauge associated, assuming that the valuation of the center has finite rank. In this direction, our main result is an existence theorem of minimal gauges on central simple algebra over a field with a finite rank valuation. We also generalize for simple algebras, non-necessarily central, a result of Tignol and Wadsworth which relate gauges with certain value functions introduced by Morandi in 1989. This value functions are associated to Dubrovin valuation rings integral over its center. As a consequence of this last result, we obtain an existence theorem of gauges on finite dimensional semisimple algebras over a field with a rank one valuation
