Abstract:
AbstractAbundant wood remains and buried trees have been found in the western part of Lithuania near Zakeliškiai and Lyduvėnai on Dubysa River (a tributary of Nemunas River) where deposits are rich in organic remnants and buried soils. In Zakeliškiai and Skiručiai sections of Dubysa River oxbow sediments were investigated by various methods (dendrochronological, carbonate, granulometric, pollen and mollusc fauna analysis). In addition, these sections were dated using the radiocarbon method. Samples were collected from deposits of Dubysa River outcrops. The studied oxbow lakes have existed for more than 5 thousand years (from ca. 4300 BC to 1000 AD). During this period organic rich deposits with trees and branches were formed in the oxbow lake. This indicates that at the end of Atlantic, during Subboreal and in the early Subatlantic periods there was a forest growing that contained mainly oaks which were falling down into an oxbow lake and later were covered by sandy and silty deposits. The granulometry of alluvial deposits, as well as the mixture of medium-grained sand and silt show different stages of Dubysa River palaeochannel formation: riverbed and oxbow lakes. Three climate warming cycles were revealed according to carbonate analysis data in all investigated sections. The rheophile thermophilous Holocene age molluscs species Bithynia tentaculata L., Unio cf. crassus Philipsson, Pisidium amnicum (Müller), Theodoxus fluviatilis (Linnaeus) have been found. The pollen composition and sequences have been divided into five local pollen assemblage zones (LPAZ) and described according to pollen spectra in each zone. In this way it is possible restore palaeoclimatic coherent evolution, trends and cyclical change.

Abstract:
A scientific justification, focused on the development of the sustainability of feed ingredients and farm animals’ ecosystems, is required. Thus, it is crucial to search for alternative feed materials from natural sources for potential applications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prospective utilization of freshwater Cladophora glomerata (C. glomerata) as an alternative source of protein and other essential nutrients in animals’ feed. For this purpose, chemical analysis was performed on collected biomass samples from the Lithuanian rivers, Dubysa (B1), Šventoji (B2), Nevėžis (B3), and Jūra (B4). Microelements (Ca > K > N > P > Mg), trace elements (Zn > Cu), and heavy metals (Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd) have not exceeded permissible levels. The crude protein content of C. glomerata biomass ranged from 16% to 21.5% DM. The essential amino acid profile excelled, with the highest total amino acid amount of 140.99 g/kg in B4. The highest total presence of polyunsaturated fatty acids (11.71%) as well as the ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0.22) was observed in B1. The lowest ratio of omega-6/omega-3 was in B1 (1.30). As a result of bioaccumulation, C. glomerata could serve as a source of proteins, as well as amino and fatty acids, implying that biomass could be an alternative and a beneficial component of animal feed.

Abstract:
Abstract“The dual competence requirement - A study of teacher student competences in a new teacher education” examines students dealing with a dual competence requirement in teacher education. The study has its’ background in educational trends that aim to bring together a social pedagogical tradition with an educational tradition, with a focus on teacher training in School age educare (fritidshem). Focus group interviews have been used to interview 16 students in teacher education at a university in Sweden with a focus on working in school-age educare. A thematic analysis was implemented, where development of three different competences emerged that correspond to a dual competence requirement, which is Re-creators, Co-Creators and Innovators. The analysis highlights both the differences and similarities between the three competences, while also showing how the competences complement each other. The Re-creators are characterized by adapted and reproduced skills development, in which the student actively chooses to become either a teacher in the school-age educare or his subject. The Co-creators are characterized by the students adapting to the education’s implementation and producing parallel skills and becoming teachers in the school-age educare and their subject. The Innovators feature a productive creative competence in which the students use their practical aesthetic subject knowledge in the school-age educare activities, and their school-age educare skills in the teaching of the practical aesthetic subject. Findings are discussed in relation to the offering of creative skills.

Abstract:
The late Georges Duby contributed to many fields of medieval history, from his explorations of social ideology to the experience of women. This article looks at his work on peasants in the Middle Ages, emphasising in particular his thesis on the Mâconnais (published in 1953), L'économie rurale (1962), and Guerriers et paysans (1973). Duby was increasingly interested in tracing the emergence of aristocratic power, its ethos and family patterns. He came to see peasants as the rather passive base on which the brilliant chivalric culture of the medieval period was erected. His earlier studies, however, depicted agrarian society in its own right and with exemplary vividness and detail. The article discusses changes and continuities in Duby's understanding of the peasantry and the enduring influence of this historian.

Abstract:
Ubiquitination of the CSF3R [CSF3 (colony-stimulating factor 3) receptor] occurs after activated CSF3Rs are internalized and reside in early endosomes. CSF3R ubiquitination is crucial for lysosomal routing and degradation. The E3 ligase SOCS3 (suppressor of cytokine signalling 3) has been shown to play a major role in this process. Deubiquitinating enzymes remove ubiquitin moieties from target proteins by proteolytic cleavage. Two of these enzymes, AMSH [associated molecule with the SH3 domain of STAM (signal transducing adaptor molecule)] and UBPY (ubiquitin isopeptidase Y), interact with the general endosomal sorting machinery. Whether deubiquitinating enzymes control CSF3R trafficking from early towards late endosomes is unknown. In the present study, we asked whether AMSH, UBPY or a murine family of deubiquitinating enzymes could fulfil such a role. This DUB family (deubiquitin enzyme family) comprises four members (DUB1, DUB1A, DUB2 and DUB2A), which were originally described as being haematopoietic-specific and cytokine-inducible, but their function in cytokine receptor routing and signalling has remained largely unknown. We show that DUB2A expression is induced by CSF3 in myeloid 32D cells and that DUB2 decreases ubiquitination and lysosomal degradation of the CSF3R, leading to prolonged signalling. These results support a model in which CSF3R ubiquitination is dynamically controlled at the early endosome by feedback mechanisms involving CSF3-induced E3 ligase (SOCS3) and deubiquitinase (DUB2A) activities.

Abstract:
This project explored species diversity for the red algal genus Schizymenia in Australia and British Columbia, Canada, for which the only recorded representatives are S. dubyi (Chauvin ex Duby) J. Agardh and S. pacifica (Kylin) Kylin, respectively. Through a combination of CO1-5P, ITS, and rbcL sequence data, we uncovered overlooked diversity in both regions. Australian populations attributed to S. dubyi were actually a mix of an entity from the S. dubyi complex (closest matches for individuals from Argentina and Italy), a second species from the S. apoda (J. Agardh) J. Agardh complex (thus far known from Australia only), and finally individuals of the same S. dubyi mito/ITS-type introgressed with a different S. apoda rbcL type (plastid; closest matches China, Korea, and New Zealand). We resolved a complex of three closely related species for Schizymenia pacifica: Schizymenia pacifica sensu stricto, which is widely distributed in the Northeast Pacific; S. tenuis sp. nov., which is distributed throughout British Columbia with a predominantly northern distribution; and Schizymenia sp._1Cal, which is distributed from California to Oregon. As part of ongoing surveys of crustose red algae, we uncovered crustose sporophytes for three of the six Schizymenia genetic groups resolved here, and the sporophytic phase of a new species of Predaea from northern British Columbia, Predaea borealis sp. nov., for a single crustose (sporophyte) specimen from Haida Gwaii. This last result is particularly surprising, as species of Predaea are typically confined to lower latitudes in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Abstract:
The aim of this contribution is to discuss the significance of a democratic approach in science education. Initially, the concept of ”democracy” is outlined. According to the deliberative view, democracy is learnt and practiced in communication with others. Furthermore, according to sociocultural theory, communication also enhances scientific content knowledge. This implies that deliberative discussions could be helpful in carrying out teachers’ dual assignment: to transmit knowledge and foster independent, judicious, democratic citizens. The discussion is approached through the presentation of a simulated teaching sequence. Based on this scenario, in which a socioscientific issue is the theme for deliberation, the possibilities and limitations of a deliberative approach in science education is discussed.

Abstract:
Bosnia and Herzegovina has always had a developed sheep production, at least from the aspect of the number of sheep per capita. Today, the ratio is 1 sheep per 4 persons, because the cattle production, globally looking, is decimated by war. Thanks to the geographic location of the country, the quality of mountain pastures and environment that is still healthy, we believe that with increased investments in sheep production we could increase the number of heads, which would have positive effects on production of meat and milk of exceptional quality. The study involving the uterus of Dubska pramenka during sexual season under nomadic conditions of holding, demonstrated that, in adequate zoo hygiene conditions (holding, feeding, treatment of animal), the sheep showed increased reproductive parameters as well as parameters manifested in meat and milk production. In our studies, microstructure of uterus of Dubska pramenka during sexual season shows extremely positive characteristics for nidation of the egg cell and normal development of the embryo. Epithelium of the uterus is in a form of high-prismatic cells, which points to significant cell activity; perfusion and development of myometrium are visible. The uterine glands are extremely well developed and their histological structure indicates increased secretion and preparation of the uterus for gravidity.

Abstract:
Responding to recent critical reflection on the concept ofanuvādawithin the fields of translation studies and South Asian literary cultures, this article explores the complex colonial mediations shaping modern Bengali understandings of the term. The goal is to situate the production of new meanings ofanuvādawithin the zone of the Dubash, a phrase used here to conjure the highly mediated space of vernacular translation as practiced by Bengali intellectuals under colonial rule. This article argues that if we wish to employanuvādaas a tool for rethinking the meaning and practice of translation, we must first attend to the processes that transformed the norms and goals of textual transmission in the colonial era. In the end we can hope not only to enrich our understanding of South Asian translational practices but also to appreciate the role played by translation in the story of literary modernity in Bengal.

Abstract:
Summary The purpose of this study is to determine the morphometric characterization of Dubska Pramenka sheep and to establish a relationship between the most important body measurements of ewes and rams within the strain. The Dubska Pramenka is one of the biggest strains within the Pramenka breed. The wither heights of ewes and rams were 73.37 cm and 79.92 cm respectively, whereas the body lengths were 74.66 cm (ewes) and 80.42 cm (rams), and the rump heights were 73.72 cm (female) and 80.16 cm (male). Based on the data presented, it is evident that the Dubska Pramenka sheep has almost a square body shape with the rump height slightly greater than the wither height. The chest depth and shoulder width of ewes were 34.50 cm and 22.72 cm respectively, whereas those of males were 36.17 cm and 23.75 cm. In both sheep genders, the hip width (ewes 21.92 cm, rams 22.91 cm) was lower than the shoulder width. The chest and shin perimeters of females were 98.72 cm and 9.31 cm respectively, whereas those of males were 103.25 cm and 10.91 cm. The most significant correlation and statistical significance were recorded in relation to the measured wither and rump heights (r = 0.856 for females, r = 0.856 for males) due to their constant increase during the growth and development of sheep. Conversely, the measurements of rump heights and chest perimeters did not indicate any correlation (r = −0.028 for ewes, r = 0.004 for rams).

Abstract:
AbstractVentenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Coss.], an invasive winter annual grass, significantly reduces forage production in grassland systems and displaces species within both perennial- and annual-dominated grasslands within the Inland Northwest. The range of V. dubia is expanding into sagebrush steppe communities, an expansive habitat critical for forage production, wildlife, and recreation. Currently, there is limited knowledge of V. dubia’s distribution and abundance within sagebrush steppe communities. We performed field surveys at 15 locations in sagebrush steppe rangelands in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon to assess where V. dubia occurs, with the aim of providing insight about its niche in this new habitat. Specifically, we evaluated biotic and abiotic factors of the plant community as indicators of V. dubia presence. We also correlated species diversity measures with no, low (<12.5%), and high (>12.5%) V. dubia cover. Though widely distributed throughout the study region, V. dubia only appeared in 45% of the 225 plots, and foliar cover was typically less than 50%. It was primarily found in ephemerally wet microhabitats. Species richness and the Shannon diversity index were lowest in plots with high V. dubia cover. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis revealed that V. dubia and medusahead [Taeniatherum caput-medusae (L.) Nevski] were closely associated. Furthermore, chi-square indicator analysis showed that T. caput-medusae was more prevalent, while mountain big sagebrush [Artemisia tridentata Nutt. spp. vaseyana (Rydb.) Beetle] was less prevalent, in plots containing V. dubia. Abiotic factors that explained variation in V. dubia abundance included rock cover, soil depth, and a north/south aspect. Higher V. dubia cover also correlated with higher clay content and lower phosphorus and potassium concentrations in the soil. We suggest that at this point, detection survey efforts to locate incipient infestations of V. dubia in sagebrush steppe communities should focus on moist areas and sites susceptible to invasion by T. caput-medusae.

Abstract:
Abstract In our previous study, we demonstrated that the ethanol extracts of Artemisia dubia (A. dubia) and Aster scaber (A. scaber) have anti-nosemosis activity. In our present study, we intend to establish the anti-nosemosis activity of aqueous, ethyl acetate (EA), and butanol (BuOH) extracts of A. dubia and A. scaber. In order to determine the optimal dose, we performed both in vitro and in vivo toxicity for all the extracts and also carried out anti-nosemosis experiments. Although all of the extracts (aqueous, EA, and BuOH) showed in vitro and in vivo anti-nosemosis activity in a dose-dependent manner, the aqueous extracts of A. dubia and A. scaber showed more potent anti-nosemosis activity than the EA and BuOH extracts. Moreover, an aqueous extract of A. dubia + A. scaber demonstrated stronger anti-nosemosis activity compared with the aqueous extracts of either A. dubia or A. scaber alone. Although the main ingredients in A. dubia and A. scaber remain unclear, our results suggest that the active components of A. dubia and A. scaber could dissolve in the aqueous fraction.

Abstract:
AbstractVentenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Cross] is a winter annual grass relatively new to the inland Pacific Northwest that is capable of displacing desired vegetation. Indaziflam was evaluated for the management of V. dubia on two Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) sites near Moscow, ID, and Pullman, WA. While perennial grasses were dormant, applications of indaziflam in mixture with various herbicides were made in spring 2016. Treatment effects were evaluated for 2 yr by visual assessments of community composition and canopy cover of V. dubia and other non-weedy species (assessments occurred 3 to 6 mo after treatment, depending on location) and by representative cover class assessments. Biomass samples of all plant species were collected in the summer of 2017. Reduced V. dubia cover was observed in 2016, except when glyphosate was used alone. In 2017 indaziflam applied alone or in mixture with rimsulfuron effectively controlled V. dubia with minimal impact on desirable vegetation. Plant biomass from nontreated plots averaged 40 g m−2 for V. dubia and 100 to 179 g m−2 for perennial grasses. Plant biomass averaged <11 g m−2 for V. dubia and 371 to 490 g m−2 for perennial grasses when indaziflam at 102 g ai ha−1 plus glyphosate at 474 g ai ha−1 was applied. Smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) biomass was positively associated with the reduction of V. dubia, and there was a decrease in diversity associated with the removal of V. dubia through effective treatments. Indaziflam is an effective tool for the management of V. dubia in perennial grass stands, and spring applications of indaziflam should be in mixture with herbicides with POST activity.

Abstract:
AbstractVentenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Coss.] is a nonindigenous, invasive grass in the inland Pacific Northwest (PNW) of the United States. It appears to be present in the PNW without any evidence of disease expression. Surveys of V. dubia in the PNW (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) were entirely negative for fungi, including types of pathogens that might be expected in grasses (e.g., rust, powdery mildew, choke). In Europe, where V. dubia is native, fungi were documented (i.e., Septoria ventenatae Sandu, Tilletia fusca Ellis & Everh., and Tilletia elisabethae T. Denchev & Denchev) on V. dubia. In its native range there likely are natural enemies that may limit V. dubia abundance, and these may include fungal pathogens. Pathogens of V. dubia from its native range may hold potential for use as classical biological control agents in North America, and if deemed safe, could be introduced. To ascertain V. dubia’s native range, we compiled data from herbarium specimens, consulted with herbarium curators in the region, and searched relevant literature. We found that V. dubia primarily is reported in southern Europe and western Asia. Ventenata dubia has been reported only occasionally from North Africa in Algeria and Morocco. The common name “North Africa grass” likely originated from references to V. dubia in the 19th-century botanical explorations in Algeria of the French botanist, Ernest Cosson, who published the current scientific name based on a preexisting name in 1854. Another finding of interest is that the latitudinal range of collections from Europe and North Africa of V. dubia spans Tunisia to Finland. The plant may thus be adapted to a range of environments, indicating it could become more widely distributed in North America. Efforts to search its native range for pathogens should also consider the range of environmental conditions found within its native and introduced ranges.

Abstract:
Lameness in sheep, especially in semi-extensive breeding of Dubska pramenka, which starts in the interdigital region, was the motive of our morphological and histological research, in order to and in some way, bring the structure of the interdigital sinus in correlation with the appearance of this pathological state that causes extensive economical losses in the domestic sheep breeding,. The anatomical location of the interdigital diverticulum, its histological structure, which point to abundance of sebaceous glands around the hair follicles surrounding the interdigital opening and interdigital glands in deeper layers, point to the suggestion that their secretion increases due to poor hygienic keeping conditions. Pathogens - anaerobic microorganisms, which are most commonly causing the contagious lameness find the ideal conditions for their growth and reproduction because the secretion of these glands is likely "to close" the only "air" communication - interdigital opening.
