Abstract:
The present thesis illustrates the close relation of Marcel Duchamp’s work to Androgyny; the harmonious coexistence of the male and female principles, as we inherited them from the ancient myths of creation, the Platonic ideas, the Gnostic and Hermetic thoughts, the Alchemical beliefs and the way they are expressed in the corpus of Duchamp’s work. Part I, “L’ Androgyne”, presents the use and meaning of Androgyny in Ancient Myths of Creation, Classical Antiquity, Ancient Greek Philosophy and specifically Plato’s Symposium, Gnosticism, the Hermetic Philosophy of the Alchemists and Kabala. Part II, “Marcel Duchamp - L’ Artiste Androgyne” examines the work of Marcel Duchamp seen from an androgynous perspective in order to offer a different insight to his work. In particular it examines and extensively analyzes the two major works of Duchamp: Le Grand Verre and Étant Donnés and focuses on the androgynous characteristics of the works as they have been set in Part I

Abstract:
This work selects specific texts of Marcel Duchamp: theoretical texts in which Duchamp reflects about the art world. This texts are lectures that Marcel Duchamp gave at universities, letters and catalogs for the exhibitions that he organized and whose texts Duchamp signed. This material is essential to understand how a so radical artist understood art as he struggled to propagate his views. Duchamp played an important role in introducing European art to the United States by working as curator for a long period. It\'s amazing to read his texts presenting Picasso, Calder or Matisse. Or even defending the reasons why every artist should attend the university. These are texts that every art student or art lover should read. This material was selected and translated from the originals published on the books Duchamp du Signe - écrits (Paris, Flammarion, 1975) and The Writings of Marcel Duchamp (New York, Da Capo Preess, 1989), organized by Michel Sanouillet with the collaboration of Elmer Peterson (both contain the same texts, the first one in French, the second one in English). This selection covers 25% to 30% of these books. I left out of my selection all the notes that are part of the own works of Duchamp and have an intense poetic character, often using sophisticated puns. Besides the translation of theoretical texts, my work have two more parts. An afterword, which is a view of Duchamp\'s works illuminated only by the texts which are translated at the first part and an Appendix - which is the part I like best. This appendix is a joke on Duchamp. I propose a Ready-made to define a profile of his work cutting from the texts he wrote about other artists only traces that are strongly present in his own work. It´s almost a psychoanalytic reading that indicates how we see in others what we have in us.

Abstract:
In the historiography of the second half of the last century the work of Duchamp-Villon is rarely mentioned, just as the history of sculpture is often used as a term of comparison with respect to the better-known area of painting. The sculpture was, however, part of the great revolution in art history just as much as painting, due to the work of some artists including Picasso, Boccioni, Brancusi, Archipenko, Gaudier-Brzeska, Lipchitz, Nadelman and Duchamp-Villon. Regarding the latter, some principles of its aesthetic research seem to be fundamental: the simplification of forms, the attention to geometry, the refusal of the typical cubism with facets of the Cubism more recognized; the role of thought in the creative process; the interest for the Primitivism conceived as an emblem of essentiality and synthesis of the form; the concept of space-time and the desire to contribute to the combination of sculpture and architecture. These are to be considered as essential points to understand its personal adhesion with the Cubism: if it is difficult to consider its work as an orthodox cubist production, the above-mentioned characteristics register the name of Duchamp-Villon in the great aesthetic revolution of the beginning of the 20th century, which is first of all a revolution of thought. Based on this premise, this study aims to analyze the work of Duchamp-Villon in light of the cultural and artistic novelties of the early twentieth century in relation to sculpture and painting, so as to understand whether his aesthetics represent a translation of pictorial experimentations of Cubism or whether, on the contrary, it constitutes a personal version of Cubism in three dimensions

Galati, Gabriela. "Duchamp meets Turing : art, modernism, posthuman." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/6609.

Full text
Abstract:
In her book How We Became Posthuman (1999), Katherine Hayles analysed the process through which the conception of the liberal humanist subject led the way to the posthuman subject, a subject who lives in complete entwinement with the digital. This process, however, was not innocuous: it made the (fallacious) perception that information could do without material instantiation pervasive within many fields of knowledge, a process that Hayles contends originates in the Macy Conferences and the evolution of cybernetic theory. This research identifies an analogous process within the artistic realm: when Clement Greenberg delineated the concepts of opticality and colour field as the main characteristics that “defined” Modernist painting, he conceived of these in a purely disembodied subject (Krauss 1993). In this context, this work proposes to consider that the actual overcoming of modernism comes along with the advent of the posthuman, tracing its origin to Marcel Duchamp and his invention of the readymade, and not with postmodernism, the theoretical consistency of which, at least in the artistic field, this research will question. A first aim of this work will be to unify the main concepts and theories of the artistic field with those of cybernetics, to bring together ‘Turing land’ and ‘Duchamp land’ (Manovich 1996). For achieving this, digitalisation processes are not to be understood as representations of some material reality, but rather as ontological repetitions through which difference is conveyed. This is why the consideration of the temporal dimension of the archive as event is fundamental for understanding that the archive can only exist in its change, in its movement, in its action, in its metamorphosis, and thus the relevance of digitalisation processes in this regard becomes evident. Therefore, the archive is not only an issue of memory, but also a question yet to come, of conformation both of the future and subjectivities (Derrida 1967b, 1995). In this context, the present work advances the emergence of a digital subject with the emergence of new media, and theorises that the constitution of this subject happens by assuming a ‘point of view’ (Deleuze 1988) in the technological unconscious (Vaccari 1979). Reflecting upon the effects of digitalisation and actualisation (Deleuze 1968) on the subject, on how the digitised artwork and event affects, and changes, the subject observing and interacting with it, the present research will demonstrate that it is pertinent to talk about a subject who is embodied in the digital. In this sense, if the digitised artwork in the archive needs a subject to be actualised, this process also has its consequences for the subject. Therefore, the digital subject is the possibility of actualisation of the archive, and at the same time changes with it: she assumes an always-different ‘point of view’ constituted for her by the floating signifier in the technological unconscious. All these theories, which are part of the posthuman, are presented as the actual overcoming of modernism to show that the readymade as medium is, at the same time, both one of the points of rupture and the key link to bring back new media and art theory as art at large.

Abstract:
In his Esthetic Lecture (1831), at the romantic art's end, Hegel developed the objective humour's concept which resolved the contradiction between the interest for outside world's accidents on one hand, personality's whins on the other hand. Breton held up as an example Les chants de Maldoror and moved closer together Rêve, Rimbaud's poem and Jarry's fable Le homard et la boîte de corned beef, as such objective humour. We are studying automatic writing's experiences, bringing object concept up to date. We call "language psychomecanique" Roussel's method and Duchamp's aphorisms, verbal telescoping with the object in the reality. The thesis ends with object's adventure and with Tinguely, Duchamp and Roussel's heir

Abstract:
. ) Et surtout un caractère d'infinitude.

Abstract:
This phd thesis starts with the idea that, in xxth century art, the influence of language theories induces internal changes in art, bringing the decomposition of the image. The use of written words in painting is a long lasting tradition, and theories exported from literature relatively commonly influenced the way art was considered to be done. Nevertheless, with our century, and particularly with cubism, this influence leads up to gradual dislocation of the representation as it was since then. The image becomes elliptic, losing its shape. Mimesis gives place to another space, which is already a combination of many spaces, and among them semantic space. Then the emergence of modernism comes with the invasion of the image with language, progressively but also very strongly. Furthermore, this questioning of art about the "semantic sphere" goes with the beginning of semiotics, philosophy of language and sometimes uses them. It also uses experiences in poetics. The researches are done in parallel and often go in the same direction. Sometimes the artists don't know about them (picasso, braque), or they intentionally use the theories (conceptual art). Those researches of artists of the century on language or about models issued of language were useful to analyse the profound modification of art, in its aims and formal achievements. The study of these interactions between art and language theories brought comprehension of the plastic and conceptual metamorphosis of the codes of representation. This study analyses this subject through three artists : kandinsky, malevitch, duchamp, the work of each of them being the paradigm for one interaction between art and language theories

Abstract:
In this dissertation the artworks Fountain of Marcel Duchamp that dates from 1917 and One and three chairs of Joseph Kosuth that dates from 1965 were analysed and discussed using a method developed in semiotics. The works of art were studied with reference to modernist and postmodernist codes with special attention to the artists, the works of art and the viewers. These specific works of art were selected for this study because they exemplify the artists' views and notions concerning art. In this study the significance of Duchamp's Fountain for traditional western notions of art was discussed. The significance of Kosuth's One and three chairs for the ongoing debate on art also came under discussion. The study is concluded by a comparative discussion of the contributions of Duchamp and Kosuth, especially with regard to the discourse on art.

Abstract:
On the forefront of modernity, Marcel Duchamp leaves us a work for which analysts are quite creative to name it (“avant-gardist”, “new”, “out of time”, “innovator”). Paradoxically, it is only known as Readymade. Yet, Duchamp's early interest for music and related matters has been widely ignored by a vast majority of the public and the University microcosm so far. His exploration of the sound sphere offers several musical compositions. Most of them were written in 1913 : Musical Erratum, for three voices, The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors Even/Erratum Musical, for keyboard, and the Musical Sculpture “that lasts”. They are followed by some “sonorous” Readymades (With Hidden Noise, 1916). In order to understand Marcel Duchamp's sonosphere and its implications on the work of other artists (exceeding Plastic-Arts by far), four methods are proposed : “permissive”, “performative”, “perceptual” and “perditive”. The new composer's own influences, his “horizon of waiting”, can be distinguished within these categories. From the first European and American experiments to Electronical Music, from Sound Poetry to Multimedia, from the Indeterminacy to Improvisation, from Audio Installation to Ambient Music, from Minimalism to Mass Musical Maximalism, this essay explores boundaries, now neutralized, between the “Musique Savante” and the “Oral” tradition. It also clarifies the historical, philosophical, political, sociological and artistic contexts through which concerns the acoustic or acousmatic conceptions of Marcel Duchamp, one century full member of musical instabilities

Abstract:
Practice is defined as the exercise of a method or profession, and a treatise. Practise is defined as to practise tricks or artifices upon; to act upon by artifice so as to induce to do or believe something: to impose upon, delude: to make trial of, practically. The practise that my practice reconstitutes was characterised by its executor, Duchamp, not as irony, ironie, but ironisme, the deployment of irony in debate. Socratic irony is defined as feigning ignorance in order to confute an enemy in debate. Irony is saying the opposite of what you mean. Duchamp's practice of the practise of ironisme did not then manifest itself in an art questioning its own conditions, by dissemblance, as is popularly believed, although it appeared to. The 'ironic' art which has been taken as the product of Duchamp's practice was then merely an allegorical appearance, since allegory, saying one thing and meaning something else, is cousin-germane to irony. Duchamp criticism has been informed by such misconceptions to the extent that, as late as 1989, David Hopkins, in his review of Kuenzli and Naumann's Marcel Duchamp: Artist of the Century could still point to the need for "a full length study of Duchamp which convincingly contextualises his de-essentializing project, rather than blithely using it as a pretext for exercising contemporary critical strategies."

Abstract:
“Pontos de Vista” pretende ser um vestígio das relações abordando as questões da percepção do tempo, da duração de determinadas acções e ainda as formas de movimento que estas produzem no espaço chamado cidade; Marcel Duchamp was one of the most controversial artists of the 20th century, interested in science, he experimented the art. He broke down the barriers between the different categories of art and forced the art world to rethink the work of art as a whole, from the creative process to functional aspects. With his myriad talents, this singular figure exerted an immense influence on the art world, from conceptual art to the fourth dimension, to photography, including chronophotography. Photography, especially chronophotography, changed the field of the visual arts, and contributed towards the alteration of Duchamp's perception, leading to the production of his major works. “Pontos de Vista” is intended to be a remnant of relations and addressing issues of perception of time, the duration of certain actions and the motion of the forms that they produce in the space called city.

In this research, we tried to decipher the fruitful presence of these sources, both on the theoretical, but also on the visual, and even technical level, in the complex and multifaceted work of Marcel Duchamp. In particular, efforts have been made to reconsider the entire duchampian artistic itinerary, focusing on his cinematographic collaborations and his television contributions of the 1950s and 1960s, with the aim of revising all his work as an example of an « Image movement » (in the deluezian sense) - an image closely related to the experiments carried out in the laboratories of physiology and psychology applied between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century and to the correlative philosophical reflections

Abstract:
The text an visual works of the thesis are the turning points between albrecht durer's woodcut called "the drawer with a lying woman" that belongs to the theorical work "the manual of measurement by means of compass and ruler. . . " - the 1538 issue, the first french translation of which has been joined as an appendix, as well as "etant donnes 1e la chute d'eau 2e le gaz d'eclairage" - philadelphia museum of modern art, 1946-1966 - of marcel duchamp. The question is about the relation between two setting up moments which disrupted the creative process and the sight that is focused on the artistic work. The main axis which links and separates the two artists has been drawned by the geometrical concerns that underpin their respective written and visual works. With the help of thought-processes, we have extracted section, translation, inversion and matrix-fonction - we are questioning the natur and content of a "going-through" sight associated with the constant presence of the female nude. The thesis determines a whole of facts that seem to require each others through some laws which cut off the sign of similarity on one hand and a choice of possibilities that are recognised by some laws as they cause them

Abstract:
In the XX Century European and American Literature it is possible to highlight a number of writers for whom the body invested a major relevance in the organization of their works: the physicality of their experience became the base of which they created new narrative ways of expression. By opting for Marcel Duchamp and William Seward Burroughs, I formulated a counterpoint between the biography and the bibliography. My aim was to show how to certain experiences of the body corresponded a precise organization of their art. In order to do so, I took as an example Roger Shattuck's and Marcel Schwob's criteria. For what concerns Duchamp, I demonstrated how his passion for the chess game and his desire of freedom were fondamental to the edition of the Notes after which he created the Large Glass poem. For what concerns Burroughs, I showed how his addiction worked as a metaphor of power and therefore the use of literary mechanisms such as the "cut-ups" and the "fold-ins" provided him a strategy to exceed any coercion. I also highlighted how the thematic of denudation played a predominant role along their production and was the condition sine qua non to achieve a truth within the text and the body

Abstract:
As Maurice Blanchot observed that daily, "is what is most difficult to find," Jouret Quentin finds that keeps changing appearance and beyond our control desire. The problem is therefore not so much to define the everyday, but rather to see how "the discretion is how the daily exchange imperceptibly." More practically, discretion is a way to learn how to see the world around us, to grasp the tiny modulations. For the artist as for the photographer, this will be attentive to opportunities that arise, just for a brief moment. As Roland Barthes aspired around the term "diaphrologie" to build a science of nuances, Quentin Jouret called alternately the neutral concepts Roland Barthes, to dettaglio at Daniel Arasse of blandness in François Julien, of inframince with Marcel Duchamp or to infraordinaire at Georges Perec. The memory consists of a volume of 590 pages, duplex printing, whose characteristic is to insert between each page a narrower slip, non folioté, reserved for the reproduction of images of the author and to a lesser extent those works referenced artists. This work intends to emphasize the primacy of artistic experience in research in the visual arts

Abstract:

Abstract:
The next-generation of radio interferometer arrays - the proposed Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursor instruments, The Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT) and Australian Square Kilometre Path finder (ASKAP) - will produce radio observation survey data orders of magnitude larger than current sizes. The sheer size of the imaged data produced necessitates fully automated solutions to accurately locate and produce useful scientific data for radio sources which are (for the most part) partially hidden within inherently noisy radio observations (source extraction). Automated extraction solutions exist but are computationally expensive and do not yet scale to the performance required to process large data in practical time-frames. The DUCHAMP software package is one of the most accurate source extraction packages for general (source shape unknown) source finding. DUCHAMP's accuracy is primarily facilitated by the à trous wavelet reconstruction algorithm, a multi-scale smoothing algorithm which suppresses erratic observation noise. This algorithm is the most computationally expensive and memory intensive within DUCHAMP and consequently improvements to it greatly improve overall DUCHAMP performance. We present a high performance, multithreaded implementation of the à trous algorithm with a focus on 'desktop' computing hardware to enable standard researchers to do their own accelerated searches. Our solution consists of three main areas of improvement: single-core optimisation, multi-core parallelism and the efficient out-of-core computation of large data sets with memory management libraries. Efficient out-of-core computation (data partially stored on disk when primary memory resources are exceeded) of the à trous algorithm accounts for 'desktop' computing's limited fast memory resources by mitigating the performance bottleneck associated with frequent secondary storage access. Although this work focuses on 'desktop' hardware, the majority of the improvements developed are general enough to be used within other high performance computing models. Single-core optimisations improved algorithm accuracy by reducing rounding error and achieved a 4X serial performance increase which scales with the filter size used during reconstruction. Multithreading on a quad-core CPU further increased performance of the filtering operations within reconstruction to 22X (performance scaling approximately linear with increased CPU cores) and achieved 13X performance increase overall. All evaluated out-of-core memory management libraries performed poorly with parallelism. Single-threaded memory management partially mitigated the slow disk access bottleneck and achieved a 3.6X increase (uniform for all tested large data sets) for filtering operations and a 1.5X increase overall. Faster secondary storage solutions such as Solid State Drives or RAID arrays are required to process large survey data on 'desktop' hardware in practical time-frames.

Abstract: This research had his focus on the study of "Étant Donnés: 1º la chute d'eau, 2º le gaz d'éclairage", a powerful creation performed silently for 20 years and immortalized through the survival of the Marcel Duchamp ideas. Mirror or door, the fact is that between us and the unreal forms that hurt the eyes with its edges, have a dark room, making us subject hopelessly cinematographic. Here the film, specifically the documentary, that made the partly record of the representation of facts and showed notions of truth and reality, opened a privileged space to be used as a data source in its most engaging and instigator, that guided us to the development of the cognitive reasoning. When we go through the stillness of Étant Donnés see the "lack", a piece of time detained in mise-en-scène "made not to see" and we are processed, involuntarily, in voyeurs. Faced with such a voyeuristic spectacle, embarrassing and revealing our guilt are some who surprised a secret. Leaving for new Standards of interpretation of this unusual masterpiece, eclipsed and essentially carnal, we found ourselves forced to pass through the tangled memory texture of Marcel Duchamp. Finally, satiating the hunger of our hungry souls, Duchamp realizes his scenographic image in this three-dimensional miniature and allows us to reap, of a medieval garden, the "Rose of a Romance" and find an anadyomene banquet of wonders, where, through dreams and mirrors, we are placed face to face ourselves

Abstract:
The image of Marcel Duchamp as a brilliant but laconic dilettante has come to dominate the literature surrounding the artist’s life and work. His intellect and strategic brilliance were vaunted by his friends and contemporaries, and served as the basis of the mythology that has been coalescing around the artist and his work since before his death in 1968. Though few would challenge these attributions of intelligence, few have likewise considered the role that Duchamp’s prodigious mind played in bringing about the present state of his career. Many of the signal features of Duchamp’s artistic career: his avoidance of the commercial art market, his cultivation of patrons, his “retirement” from art and the secret creation and posthumous unveiling of his Étant Donnés: 1° la chute d’eau/2° le gaz d’éclairage, all played key roles in the development of the Duchampian mythos. Rather than treating Duchamp’s current art historical position as the fortuitous result of chance, this thesis attempts to examine the many and subtle ways in which Duchamp worked throughout his life to control how he and his work were and are perceived. Such an examination necessarily begins at the start of his relationship with the general and specialist media, through the auspices of his painting Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. This is followed by an examination of Duchamp’s decades-long relationship with the press through the interviews given during his life. Duchamp’s concern for his physical legacy is explored next, initially through his relationships with his two dominant patrons, Walter and Louise Arensberg and Katherine Dreier. Not only did he act as advisor and dealer in the development of both prestigious collections, Duchamp had the privileged position of participant in the negotiations surrounding the disposition of the collections he had helped to build. Duchamp’s concern for the preservation of his physical legacy continued after the installation of his own work within major American museums. Thus, next is considered the development and effects of the two large-scale retrospectives of Duchamp’s work held within his lifetime. Finally is considered the role of Duchamp’s posthumous work, the Étant Donnés. Through the combination of secrecy and strategically revealed hints, Duchamp ensured that his final work would engender discussion long after his death.

Abstract:

This paper studies the novels Historia abreviada de la literatura portátil (1985) and Aire de Dylan (2012) from the Reception Theory. Under the light of this theory, the relation between reality and fiction in the works of the author is discussed and it is analyzed how the figure of Duchamp constitutes as a "figure of relevance", articulating the diverse textual levels of the "horizon of expectation" of the narrative. Through the dialogue that establishes with works of the French artist and several authors, Vila-Matas proposes reflections on his own work and on the history of literature, inviting the reader to play his role in this game, in which his experience and imagination become the pieces that complete these jigsaw puzzles open to the public.

Abstract:

The research presents as study object the reflection on Marcel Duchamp's last work Etant donnés ", relating: the reflection of the work-object, the woman's construction image, the link of the work with the Great Glass considered as the artist's most significant work. As enxadrista/artista established a game among the spectator, the work and the History of the Art. The work Etant donnés was chosen by presenting contradictions with the artist's own production and the eroticism opened in counterpoint with the underlying eroticism in the other works. The contradiction was always present in the speech, in the creations, in your thoughts and with this last east fact it is confirmed.

Abstract:
In what the Duchamp's word is mannerist? The iconographic study of paintings and drawings made in between 1910 and 1912 (principally Young Man and Girl in Spring, Yvonne and Magdeleine Torn in Tatters, Dulcinea, Sonata, Nude Descending a Staircase, Portrait of Chess Players, The King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes, The Passage from Virgin to Bride, Bride) convenes a multitude of artistic and literary works (Bosch, Leonardo, Bellange, Arcimboldo, Vélasquez, Goya, Hogarth, Bartholdi, Gutfreund and also Laforgue, Jarry, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Goethe, Ossian, Mallarmé) which emerge as many fragments wisely recomposed. Duchamp, like the mannerists of the 16th century towards the great masters of the Renaissance, submits his sources into a complex narration which finds its result in The Large Glass. The "stripping bare" of the painting has as a corollary the subject of the garment, compulsion and source of alienation exercised on the body by the profane rituals of a society having as a mythological base the biblical episode of the Giving of the garment. Critic of "social time" gives birth to another tension, the confrontation of the Classicism and the Baroque : a disillusioned mannerism which brings his works in level of allegory of painting

Abstract:
TThis thesis on the iconology of silence is divided into three parts. The points of reference and the choice of themes came out of a study of marcel duchamp's work. With my tongue in my cheek serves as the starting point in a serie of considerations which resulted in a more general reading, founded on this presumed invariant of art. Silence and muteness abound in the interpretation or manipalation of titles, fragments of titles, peudonyms, annotations and declarations : mutt, tu m', meme, retard en verre, tr est tres important, silent et listen, etc. . . And in certain procedures in the construction oh the works of art. The second part studies a set of ancient sources, concerning three divinities of silence, harpocrates, angerona, tacita, and a philosopher, pythagoras. These are manifestations of the themes transmitted by figurative culture through the main sources of information, i. E. , emblems, collections from antiquity and, of course, the works themselves. The third part concentrates on an analysis of the figurative gestuality of silence, essentially the index or others fingers placed on the mouth. The general outline of this thesis was determined by the previous collection of iconographic material. The works of art, which form the basis of this research, have been organized on the basis of written sources on the symbolists and on religious, mythological and historical subjects

Abstract:
This study focuses on the analyses of the representations of the human body in the works of Pablo Picasso and Raymond Duchamp-Villon during their cubist periods. In order to shed some new light on the representation of the body in the cubist works of these two artists, the importance and the modality of the artistic anatomy is examined. This includes branches of science related not only to the anatomy (specifically osteology and myology), but also to the study of human proportion to the physiology, physiognomy, ethnology, anthropology, and morphology. Developing a new interpretation of Cubist images that is linked both with anatomical science and classicism in art historical context, this research corresponds to a morphological study of Cubism in multiple disciplines, such as aesthetics and epistemology. In particular, this study's aim is to consider two different forms of architectonic representation of the cubist body, starting from the same scientific knowledge. If research of Picasso is concerned mostly with the structure of the human body, Duchamp-Villon's seeks the dynamism and vitality of the body: far from axiomatizing scientific knowledge, the two artists rectify it in their own way to discover their unique expressions. Through this, the method by which the cubist pattern is formed in the oscillation between art and science is clarified, between: intuition and intelligence; subjectivity and the objectivity; and organic metamorphosis of images and the schematization of the mechanical body

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Marcel Duchamp’s "The Large Glass" in relation to Homer’s "Odyssey" and by extension to James Joyce’s "Ulysses." It focuses on the idea that Duchamp may have had in mind Penelope and her Suitors when he was creating the Bride and her Bachelors. The aim of the thesis is threefold – to clarify a problematic area in avant-garde art by restoring the important role the "Odyssey" played in the modern culture as evidenced by preceding and contemporary artists; to detect possible Homeric traces on the "Glass" as such, but also by exploring references to Homer in related works by Duchamp; and finally to compare the "Glass" with "Ulysses," which seems to be as convoluted in its relation to the "Odyssey." The thesis is correspondingly divided into three parts. The first places Duchamp in a broader culture that is directly influenced by the Classics and Homer’s "Odyssey." The second sets out to explore possible references to Homer in seminal works of Duchamp, which reveal that he discreetly based his working method and conceptual rationale on the appropriation of tradition. The final part deals with the ways in which specific aspects of the "Glass" may be critically interpreted as Homeric in origin. Throughout the thesis runs a comparison of the "Glass" with "Ulysses," which exemplifies how safe Homeric attributions may be bent by appropriation to serve their authors’ ends. This study is primarily theoretical and thematic, attempting to piece together perhaps a better understanding than before of one of 20th century’s most seminal artistic figures and elusive bodies of work. Thus, the "Glass" may turn out to be read as a morality story about archetypal issues with which human nature grapples eternally – violence, intoxication and lust. As such, the "Glass" may enigmatically emerge as a Homeric paradigm of man’s initiation to inner freedom, which Duchamp called the “beauty of indifference.”

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether The Large Glass was a negation of women for Marcel Duchamp. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter I is the introduction to the thesis. CHapter II includes a synopsis of the major interpretations of The Large Glass. Duchamp's statements in regard to The Large Glass are also included in Chapter II. Chapter III explains how The Large Glass works through the use of Duchamp's notes. Chapter IV investigates Duchamp's negation of women statement in several ways. His personal relationships with relatives including his wives and other women, and his early paintings of women were examined. His idea of indifference was seen within the context of the Dandy and his alter ego, Rrose Selavy as a Femme Fatale. His machine paintings are also seen as a part of his idea of detachment and negation of women. Detachment as an intellectual pursuit was probed with his life-long interest in chess. The Large Glass was then seen as not only showing inconographically a negation of women but also as being an intrinsic component of his life and his work.

Abstract:
The mundane and manufactured object has taken an increasing place on the artistic scene since its irruption, by the act of Marcel Duchamp in 1913. From 1913 to nowadays, this object is problematic: 1/ because it is both an everyday thing and a piece of art; 2/ because, when it is exhibited, it is submitted to a device of communication which simultaneously reveals and creates the meaning; 3/ because more the object is reducing itself, more the discourse about it is important.Throughout this century, the meaning of the object has changed and an evolution is discernable: more the object is abstracting or digitizing itself, more it exists by the discourse and the communication. This gives us to see an irreducible thing, a fundamentally human leftover.Analysed by aesthetic, anthropologic and institutional perspectives, the object, apparently simple, reveals its clear complexity. It is functional, useful, sometimes decorative, and more rarely a piece of art; and something of the subject, who uses, peers, creates its, sets in itself. The object, as a paradigm of the human communication, follows, induces, endorses at any rate progresses and regressions of society. In increasingly significant, interactive and sophisticated exhibitions’ devices, the piece of art is an essential indicator for a best understanding of the present time

Abstract:
The Golden Avant-Garde: Idolatry, Commercialism, and Art.
