Abstract:
State violence, and policing in particular, continue to shape the black British experience, racialising geographical areas associated with African and African-Caribbean communities. The history of black struggles in the UK has often centred on spaces of racial violence and resistance to it. But black-led social movements of previous decades have, for the most part, seen a decline in both political mobilisations, and the militant anti-racist slogans and discourses that accompanied them. Neoliberalism, through securitisation, resource reallocation, privatisation of space and the de-racialising of language, has made radical black activism an increasingly difficult endeavour. But this does not mean that black struggle against policing has disappeared. What it does mean, however, is that there have been significant changes in how anti-racist activism against policing is articulated and carried out. Three high-profile black deaths at the hands of police in 2011 led to widespread protest and civil unrest. These movements of resistance were strengthened when the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States mobilised hundreds of young people in solidarity actions in England. In this thesis, I argue that, over time, racist metonyms used to describe places racialised as black (Handsworth, Brixton etc.) and people racialised as black (Stephen Lawrence, Mark Duggan etc.), have led to the rise of metonymic anti-racism. While metonymic anti-racism was used alongside more overt anti-racist language in the period between the 1950s and early 1990s, I argue that such overt anti-racist language is becoming rarer in the post-2011 period, particularly in radical black grassroots organisations that address policing. Intersecting with metonymic anti-racism are gender dynamics brought to the surface by female-led campaigns against police violence, and forms of resistance which target spaces of post-industrial consumer capitalism. Understanding how police racism, and resistance to it, are being reconceptualised through language, and reconfigured through different forms of activism, provides a fresh understanding of grassroots black struggle in Britain.

Abstract:
In my thesis I research about the construction of homosexuality in three cultural works from 2008 to 2011. The research centres around the difference between same sex desire in practice and homosexuality as an identity. The research takes a queer theory take-off with a view from Judith Butler’s theories, but cross paths the masculinity research and Jasbir K. Puar’s theories about homonationalism. The central theory in the study is based on Lisa Duggan's concept about the new homonormative, which is re-contexturalized to fit the Swedish perspective. The essay concludes that homonormative and homonationalism are fundamental parts in the construction of homosexuality as an identity. In this essay I introduce the concept of The Homosexual to show how the homosexual subject is alienated in relation to the heterosexual environment.

Abstract:

This is a bachelor’s thesis at the University of Karlstad. The goal of this work was to further develop a system for online course testing so that it can be used for small exams. The security was going to be improved so that students have to log on with usernames and passwords when they are going to take exams. The results from the students who take exams were going to be stored in a database. Our goal was also to let students test our system, and to let them fill out a survey with questions about what they think of an online exam system.

The result is a system that manages both online course tests and small online exams. We have redeveloped the system so students who take an exam have to fill in username and password. We let the students on Datacommunications 1, fall 2005 test the system. They took a small exam in the new system, and after we let them fill out a survey in which we asked questions about what they think about writing exams online. After the students had tried the system and answered the survey-questions we concluded that most students thought the system was working well and that it had a good user interface. The system should be further developed though, before it can be used by the university.

Barros, Felipe Eduardo Lima Reina de. "Geopolítica e Religião Uma Análise Crítica da Obra de Alexander Dugin." Master's thesis, Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/19412.

Abstract:
This master's dissertation analyzes the contribution of religion and tradition as elements of political legitimation in Alexander Dugin's work, both in the context of domestic politics - in stimulating the feeling of national cohesion and the inclination towards authoritarian models of power - and in framing it ideologically for international politics - the recognition of spheres of power and civilizational spaces: the return of empires. For this, a qualitative and hermeneutic analysis will be made from two antagonistic theses that appear constantly in the author's work: to the posthistory of Hegel, Kojève and Fukuyama, Dugin responds with the Traditionalist view of the Eternal Return, which he finds in Samuel Huntington an unusual contemporary expression. How is the return to religion able to modulate the universalization of Western values? The expectation of transition and convergence from post-Soviet space and post-colonial world to the Western model is not realized because the West itself is no longer the same with the end of the Soviet Union. Post-socialism coincides with late modernity and preserves the new states in a constant state of conflict. For Dugin, the return of religion to politics is a consequent reaction to the post-Western condition in the West. Dugin, however, is not merely a spectator of the dynamics of international politics. His work is a political manifesto addressed to all discontented with the prevailing international order, an appeal to the union of different political and religious groups through a "distant ecumenism" that is only matched by the existence of a common enemy, the West.

Abstract:
Water is essential to life. Three general forms of water exist: pre-formed water that is available in food, metabolic water that is created as a byproduct of life processes (e.g., metabolism of fat or breakdown of carbohydrates), and free water (i.e., water available for drinking). As humans settle arid environments, the addition of man-made free water sources (e.g., sewage ponds, catchment ponds) often occurs. In addition, a tool commonly used to increase the abundance or distribution of wildlife species in desert environments is the addition of water sources, usually specifically designed to benefit game species like bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar). In recent decades, some scientists have argued that adding water sources to deserts may have little to no effect on desert species because they are adapted to living in desert conditions, and have thus evolved to obtain their water needs in preformed and/or metabolic form. Scientists have also suggested that adding water sources to desert environments may actually harm some individual species and alter the arraignments of groups of similarly related species, known as communities. I conducted four studies at the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground to determine if man-made water sources have an influence on the rodent community, jackrabbits, and the canid community at the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. I found that turning off water sources had no effect on abundance of rodent communities or jackrabbits. I found that a portion of coyotes used water sources and coyotes were only slightly less common near water sources once they were turned off. In addition, a portion of coyotes rarely or never drink from water sources and that coyotes did not leave their territories if water sources accessible to them were turned off. My final study revealed that turning off water sources did not influence kit fox survival or abundance, and that kit fox territories differed from areas associated with water sources in several key environmental characterizes, which may suggest that areas associated with water sources were not historically used by kit foxes. In summary, these findings suggest that water developments have little impact on the species that I studied.

Abstract:

Abstract: Traditionally included in the extinct family Bombacaceae, Pseudobombax Dugand belongs to the Bombacoideae subfamily, Malvaceae sensu lato. Composed by about 29 species, of which 16 occur in Brazilian territory and nine are endemic. In Brazil, most species are found in the southeast, northeastern and central plains. Species have considerable commercial value, for being used worldwide, especially in ornamentation and urban forestry. Studies on the reproductive system and cytogenetics are rare for the genus. This work aimed to study the floral and reproductive biology, as well as analysis of karyotype of three species of Pseudobombax from southeastern Brazil. The Pseudobombax species are important sources of pollen and nectar for their floral visitors, especially by flourishing in the dry season. Some differences were observed between the periods of flowering and fruiting during the two years of study, which may be related to different amounts of rainfall before flowering. The flowers have crepuscular/nocturnal anthesis, with features that fit in the chiropterophily syndrome. The flowers of P. tomentosum are significantly different from the other species (greater length of the flower petals, the ovary and the cup), but the shape and indumentum of the fruit is the main feature that we can use to separate the three species taxonomically. Reproductive studies of the three species showed a high percentage of outcrossing, indicating outcrossing. The reproductive efficiency remained high, confirming the necessity of cross-pollination and, therefore, their pollinators. Cytogenetic analysis showed unprecedented chromosome counts, with 2n=88 to Pseudobombax sp. (new) and P. tomentosum and 2n=84 for P. grandiflorum. The basic chromosome number suggested to Pseudobombax is x=44. We confirmed more than one chromosome number in the genus, which suggests derivation by disploidy, due to possible chromosomal rearrangements. Pseudobombax sp. (new) and P. grandiflorum, species often confused with each other, presented different chromosome numbers (2n=88 or 2n=84 , respectively) which is an important taxonomic character for the separation of the two species. The CMA/DAPI banding showed a conserved pattern within the genus, with six CMA+ bands in all species. The metric values of the chromosomes of the species under study indicated a small chromosomal complement length, wherein the smallest chromosome size was 0.3 µm in P. grandiflorum and the largest was 3.5 µm in P. tomentosum. The different chromosome numbers, as well as some floral and fruit morphological characteristics can be used for taxonomic separation of the three Pseudobombax species under study Pseudobombax, thus revealing the existence of a new species for the genus

Abstract:
Samples of sediment, seagrass and dugong tissues were analyzed for selected elements: Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, Mn, Cd, Ni, Co, Al, P and S. Iron was the most interesting element found in relation to the samples analyzed. The level of iron in dugong liver tissue is extraordinarily high, ranging from 12 691- 71 123 µg g-1 dry weight. Ferritins from liver of dugong were isolated and characterized. Ferritin was purified by heat treatment and two-column gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 and Sephacryl S-300. Isolation of ferritin was monitored by determining iron to protein ratio. For reference, ferritin was also isolated from human liver and spleen. Purity of the isolated ferritin was determined by analytical electrophoresis. The amino acid composition and subunit nature of the purified ferritin are within the normal range reported for the well-characterized human liver and spleen ferritins and horse spleen ferritin. The core size of purified dugong ferritin was determined by electron microscopy, which also indicated that purified dugong ferritin had a limited crystallinity. Mossbauer spectra of purified ferritin at 78K indicated the presence of ferrihydrite (5Fe2O39H2O) rather than geothite-like (α-FeOOH) iron oxide. This latter iron oxide was detected in the whole liver tissue of dugong. Overall, the characteristics of purified dugong ferritin are similar to other mammalian ferritins. The elemental analysis of dugong tissue, seagrass and sediment in its environment indicated that the dugong studied live in areas of minimum anthropogenic activity. The naturally high level of iron in its environment and food is reflected in the high liver iron values. The ability of the liver tissue to withstand the high concentration of iron in the tissue without apparently damaging the tissue deserves further study.

Abstract:
Tortuosity of eye fundus blood vessels is one of parameters that describe state of the blood vessels. It can be detected from fundus images. The increase in vessel tortuosity was observed in eyes of patients with advanced background diabetic retinopathy, papilloedema, arterial hypertension, even in some completely healthy eyes (in this case tortuosity does not change in time). Thus the feature of the line – tortousity – could be used as the diagnostic feature in medical applications. Unfortunately, completely reliable definition and numerical estimation of tortuosity of line (blood vessel) does not exist, although there were some more or less successful attempts to define it. This work presents a new way to estimate the tortuosity using the integral of square derivative of curvature. It is compared with the existing methods both theoretically and experimentally. Three types of lines have been used for experimental comparison: theoretical models of retinal vessels (straight line, parabola, sinusoid and their combinations), lines extracted from real fundus images and lines extracted from optometric scale for retinal vessel evaluation. To ease the extraction of the lines from these images a new version of one of the methods for vessel tracking has been created and implemented.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: While the efficacy of Dugas and Robichauds (2007) CBT treatment model for GAD has been tested in clinical trials, it is still unclear how the treatment is received in a outpatient setting with clinically referred patients. The present effectiveness study aimed to examine the effect of Dugas and Robichauds (2007) CBT treatment on a large outpatient group (N=188) diagnosed with GAD. In addition other types of CBT treatments delivered to the outpatient group were examined, as well as potential moderators for treatment effect such as age, sex, initial GAD-7 scores and concurrent pharmacological treatment. The treatment for the outpatient group was delivered in a clinic (WeMind, www.wemind.se) specialized in treatments of depression and anxiety.  Method: The study is an analysis of gathered data from CBT treatments of GAD during a 3 year span at the clinic. Patients (N=188) diagnosed with GAD were categorized according to type of CBT treatment received and if treatment was completed with intact data. 71 patients were treated with Dugas and Robichauds (2007) CBT treatment, but 22 of these patients also received other CBT interventions at the same time. 33 patients received other kinds of CBT treatment. A large group (N=84) had missing data or did not complete treatment. Measurements taken at the beginning and end of treatment were Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale-7 (GAD-7), Public Health Questionnaire-9  (PHQ-9) and Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Clinical remission was measured at the end of treatment with the help of the therapists. A completeranalysis design was used with no waitlist or control group. Results: A paired samples T-test for patients treated with Dugas and Robichauds (2007) CBT treatment and measured with GAD-7 and PHQ-9 gave significant results for GAD-7, t70=13,17 (p<0.001) and PHQ-9, t67=10,25 (P<0.001). 46 of the 71 patients (65%) was assessed with clinical remission (no clinical diagnoses after treatment). Effectsize calculated with Cohen's d were GAD-7=1.76, PHQ-9=1.46 and PSWQ=1.76. Moderators were examined by calculating GAD-7 change score (difference pre-post GAD-7) and correlating the change score with age, sex, initial GAD-7 score and pharmacological treatment. Age and sex gave no significant results. Whether concurrent pharmacological treatment had an moderator effect was examined by categorizing the patients into three groups: (1) no pharmacological treatment, (2) stable pharmacological treatment and (3) changed pharmacological treatment (increased dosage or new treatment). Again no significant effect was found. One positive significant correlation was found with initial GAD-7 scores and GAD-7 change score, GAD-7, r=.66, t69=7,36 (p<0.001). Higher initial GAD-7 measurement correlated with a greater change score. Conclusions:The results indicate a large treatment effect for Dugas and Robichauds (2007) CBT treatment model for GAD in an normal outpatient setting, with clinically referred patients and treatment administered by general CBT therapists. The effect was superior compared to the group that received general CBT treatment interventions for GAD. The effect of treatment measured with GAD-7 and PHQ-9 was also drastically improved if other CBT interventions was added to the treatment model, but these interventions did not have an effect on clinical remission. Serious limitations such as a high percentage of drop outs, a completeranalysis model, no control group and no follow up data restrict the possible interpretations of the results.

Abstract:

Duffy, Gavan. "The groups." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1999.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the history of the Catholic Social Studies Movement (the Movement), the ALP Industrial Groups and the events leading up to the split in the Labor Party which occurred between 1955 and 1957. These events are portrayed and analysed from the perspective of the Movement and the Industrial Groups. The thesis challenges many of the conventional propositions as to the reasons for, and the facts surrounding the split. Directly challenged is the view that Herbert Vere Evatt was a principled champion of traditional Labor values who acted expeditiously to save the Australian Labor Party from being subverted by a Machiavellian Catholic layman, B.A. Santamaria, for the 'sinister' purposes of Catholic action. Also challenged is the suggestion that the ideology and policies of Movement activists within the Labor Party, were contrary to Labor's platform. It will be argued to the contrary, that Labor in the fifties was impeded by doctrinaire Marxist theory, and hence, the radicalism of the Movement did not sit easily with many of the older power brokers within the labor movement. It will also be argued that The Movement was formed on the initiative of the late B.A. Santamaria and a few associates only after repeated requests from Labour politicians and unionists, often motivated by quite selfish concerns, for assistance in the struggle against Communism in the trade unions. Emphasis will be placed in this thesis on the importance and the role of anti-Catholic sectarianism as a weapon of the Communists and the Extreme Left of the Labor movement against their opponents. An emphasis will be placed on the importance of anti-Catholic sectarianism in determining the outcome of the struggle within the Labor Party and the nature of the split. It will be suggested that Dr Evatt's attack on The Movement and the industrial groups of the 5 October 1954 could not have succeeded without the divisiveness of sectarianism, never far beneath the surface in Australian society of the 50s and 60s. The impact of the Petrov Affair on the internal politics of the Labor party is canvassed. In this regard startling new evidence is advanced by the writer that the ALP parliamentary leader, Dr. Herbert V. Evatt had, in October 1953, several months before the establishment of the Petrov Royal Commission, knowledge of, or at the very least strong grounds for suspicion that his press secretary Fergan O'Sullivan, was a source of information for the Communist party and Ergo, Soviet intelligence. It will also be stated that for reasons known only to himself and about which one can only surmise, Evatt failed to act on the intelligence provided to him concerning the activities of O'Sullivan. Historically speaking, the implications of this revelation concerning Dr Evatt and Fergan 0' Sullivan are considerable.

Abstract:
This study examines the theme of betrayal in three different literary works.Betrayal is seen in different forms in the three novels. In the first chapter of the thesis, the protagonist&rsquo
s betrayal to his friend in the English writer Joseph Conrad&rsquo
s Under Western Eyes is evaluated in terms of the reasons, process, and results. Psychological analysis of the character that betrays is made. In the second chapter adultery is examined in The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham, who is another English writer. The reasons for the adultery the woman commits, her guilty conscience after the adultery, and the enlightenment process are discussed. In the third chapter, two characters&rsquo
betrayal to their ideology is examined with the background set as Turkey in the 1970s in Bir Dü

n Gecesi by Adalet Agaoglu, who is a Turkish writer. Psychological status of the characters is studied based on their feelings at a wedding night with their reasons to have deviated from their political views.Themes such as lack of love and dilemma, which collect the three novels under the same title, are particularly examined.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Activation of pelvic floor muscles is extremely specific: due to the localization of the mentioned muscles, it is difficult for the patients to visualize, understand and feel the contraction and performed function. Another puzzling factor is the fact that many patients associate pelvic floor muscles with intimacy and sexual life and, therefore, try to avoid and are embarrassed to solve the problem. On the other hand, specialists working with patients with urinary incontinence find it difficult to evaluate a proper contraction of pelvic floor muscles and efficiency of performed exercises. These limitations have stimulated search for alternative solutions for urinary incontinence and pelvic floor muscles dysfunctions with the aim to prove existing functional relations between the studied muscles as well as their influence on the functional characteristics in men after radical prostatectomy. This particular thesis was aimed at finding functional associations between pelvic floor, diaphragm, and trunk muscles by applying activation of separate muscle groups and evaluating physical parameters of the studied muscles. It is expected that the results, conclusions, and prepared practical clinical recommendations of this research will be of use for all rehabilitation specialists in various stages of treatment, as well as for doctors urologists and gynaecologists, who deal directly with individuals possessing pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions.

NASA and the Air Force are increasing the number of hypersonic and access-to-space programs creating a growing requirement for flight test ranges over large regional areas. A principal challenge facing these extended test ranges is the ability to provide continuous vehicle communications by filling the gaps in coverage between fixed ground stations. Consequently, there is a need for mobile range systems that provide a multitude of communication services under varying circumstances. This paper discusses the functional design and systems capabilities, as well as the mission support criteria, concerning NASA’s Mobile Operations Facility (MOF). The MOF will be deployed to Dugway Proving Grounds (DPG), Utah, in support of the X-33 single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) demonstrator.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Leadership in an egalitarian society is a contradiction in terms. Still, a collective has to be vocal in order to gain a bargaining position, and to have its identity reflected and accepted. This is not the least true for a marginalised society like När socken, on the Swedish island of Gotland. In this farming community of some 550 inhabitants - as on Gotland in general - there are, in the conventional sense of the word, no leaders to perform this presentation. However, the concept of spokesperson is well established. They are locally defined by the use of labels, which in turn are based on descriptions or adjectives like "firebrand", "nay-sayer", "good", "balanced" etc. I propose that this way of defining spokespersons is founded on a strong egalitarian notion and is best described as a semantic field, rather than in hierarchical terms. Throughout the centuries the geographical and social base for the individual spokesperson has been the farm or ensamgård, i.e. a group of economically, jurally, ritually, as well as spatially linked homesteads. Thus, the socken of När may be described as an example of a house-based society. Successively these ensamgård have given place to more individual farms and these in turn have become linked directly with the socken as such. Presently the socken itself has ceased to exist, at least as a formal unit within the administrative set-up of Sweden. Nevertheless, locally När socken continues to act as the prime key organising symbol. As such, När socken forms the prime focus for the processes of identity formation and the most important forum for passing information, decision-making and implementation. On the one hand, the individual farms, with links of kinship, neighbourhood, co-operation, and co-ownership, constitute the basis for the formation of social ties within the socken. On the other, such ties are also established by popular participation in an astounding amount of voluntary associations as well as quite a few projects benefiting the community as a whole. These are undertakings that mobilise the absolute majority of the population. These processes have here been summarised as När’s socken-democracy. To the outsider the projects are the most obvious result of localised popular participation. From a local point of view these projects are, apart from being socially and economically significant, primarily regarded as sources of enjoyment - the satisfaction of which is considered in itself the single most important reason to participate in any collective social action. När socken is successfully represented as a thoroughly dynamic "modern" industrious and thriving community. At the same time it is regionally regarded as one of the most traditional Gotlandic farming socken with all the connotations of a warm-embracing but also somewhat backward, marginalised community. These rather contradictory rhetoric tools are successfully employed by the spokespersons as they, in unison, represent the community. However, the spokespersons of När socken are not a homogenous group with a single goal. Local solidarity obscures the fact that the presentation is based on a complex process. One can find strong urges among farmers/farms not only to be good enough (duga) but to excel at the cost of one’s neighbours, there is also a continuos competition to define what is to be the dominant local paradigm. This way of consciously devising rhetorics and keep a firm line between the community and the outside may be interpreted as a result of an expressed need to come to terms with political and economic, as well as moral marginalisation of the individual and community. Still, these rhetorics do not directly determine the ways in which the community members interact on När or vice versa. Everyday practices, be they socialising or engaging in a project, answer to a felt need to smoothen out everyday community life. The duality of a symbolically constructed rhetoric identity and local practice may be regarded as complementary ways to construct a viable collective identity in an increasingly individualised and globalised world. The combination of rhetoric and practice can be seen as answers to the expressed local concern as how to make life in the margin a feasible proposition.

Abstract:
This essay aims to determine the prevalence of Neo-Eurasianist ideas in the Russian official political discourse be examining the Presidential Addresses to the Federal Assembly 2014, 2015 and 2016. Neo-Eurasianism is understood as a political ideology encompassing narratives, norms and policy suggestions. The study is conducted in two steps. Firstly, it interprets Neo-Eurasianism as conveyed by Aleksandr Dugin and develops an analytical scheme based on his ideas. Secondly, the prevalence of Neo-Eurasianist ideas in the Russian Presidential Addresses to the Federal Assembly 2014, 2015 and 2016 is thematically analysed within the established analytical framework. The study affirms a limited presence of Neo-Eurasianist ideas in the material. Normative notions concerning cultural plurality, a multipolar world order and Russia’s role in the world are present, whereas the underlying assumptions and subsequent policy suggestions cannot be fully affirmed. Contrary, Putin at occasion enacts the Neo-Eurasianist normative notions to articulate other policy suggestions than what Dugin’s ideas prescribe, e.g. counter-terrorism measures. This suggests that the Neo-Eurasianist discourse is used as a rationale to legitimize regime policies, a conclusion that has been drawn in previous studies as well. Regardless of motive, Neo-Eurasianist ideas seem to have taken a limited, but firm, hold in Russian official political discourse.

Psonak, Kevin Damien. "The long line of the Middle English alliterative revival : rhythmically coherent, metrically strict, phonologically English." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2012-05-5044.

Full text
Abstract:
This study contributes to the search for metrical order in the 90,000 extant long lines of the late fourteenth-century Middle English Alliterative Revival. Using the 'Gawain'-poet's 'Patience' and 'Cleanness', it refutes nineteenth- and twentieth-century scholars who mistook rhythmic liveliness for metrical disorganization and additionally corrects troubling missteps that scholars have taken over the last five years. 'Chapter One: Tame the "Gabble of Weaker Syllables"' rehearses the traditional, but mistaken view that long lines are barely patterned at all. It explains the widely-accepted methods for determining which syllables are metrically stressed and which are not: Give metrical stress to the syllables that in everyday Middle English were probably accented. 'Chapter Two: An Environment for Demotion in the B-Verse' introduces the relatively stringent metrical template of the b-verse as a foil for the different kind of meter at work in the a-verse. 'Chapter Three: Rhythmic Consistency in the Middle English Alliterative Long Line' examines the structure of the a-verse and considers the viability of verses with more than the normal two beats. An empirical investigation considers whether rhythmic consistency in the long line depends on three-beat a-verses. 'Chapter Four: Dynamic "Unmetre" and the Proscription against Three Sequential Iambs' posits an explanation for the unusual distributions of metrically unstressed syllables in the long line and finds that the 'Gawain'-poet's rhythms avoid the even alternation of beats and offbeats with uncanny precision. 'Chapter Five: Metrical Promotion, Linguistic Promotion, and False Extra-Long Dips' takes the rest of the dissertation as a foundation for explaining rhythmically puzzling a-verses. A-verses that seem to have excessively long sequences of offbeats and other a-verses that infringe on b-verse meter prove amenable to adjustment through metrical promotion. 'Conclusion: Metrical Regions in the Long Line' synthesizes the findings of the previous chapters in a survey of metrical tension in the long line. It additionally articulates the key theme of the dissertation: Contrary to traditional assumptions, Middle English alliterative long lines have variable, instead of consistent, numbers of beats and highly regulated, instead of liberally variable, arrangements of metrically unstressed syllables.

Tikel, Daniela. "Using a genetic approach to optimise dugong (Dugong dugon) conservation management." Thesis, 1997. https://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/28125/1/28125-tikel-1997-thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Distributed throughout the coastal tropical and sub tropical waters of the Indo-west Pacific, the dugong (Dugong dugon) is considered rare over much of its range and listed by the IUCN (1996) as 'vulnerable to extinction'. The largest numbers of dugongs are believed to occur in Australian waters. The main threats to dugong numbers are anthropogenic activities, such as accidental netting, habitat deterioration and Indigenous hunting. The primary objective of this study is to recognise intraspecific genetic subdivision for dugong management. Complementing ecological studies, these findings have immediate and practical relevance to the conservation management of the dugong. Genetic material was sampled from various types of dugong tissue including skin, muscle, bone, and their faeces. Advances upon established sampling approaches for marine mammals include a biopsy system tailored to dugongs and the extraction, amplification and sequencing of dugong DNA from their faeces. Samples from approximately 250 dugongs were collected by carcass salvage, from dugongs hunted by Indigenous peoples, and by remote sampling of free ranging dugongs. Not all the samples collected were analysed, mainly because of low sample quality. From dugong samples collected from Australia (n=92), West Indian Ocean (n=4) and Asia (n=7), three genetic markers were investigated: the cytochrome b gene and control region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and microsatellites. Cytochrome b proved to contain insufficient variation for an interpopulation comparison, whereas a block of DNA sequence (194 bases), positioned 5' in the control region of mtDNA, was identified as suitable for interpopulation comparison because of its high variation. A substantial foundation for the development of microsatellite markers for future research was established by this study. In addition to recognising a six base repeat located 3' in the control region of mtDNA, five GT-AC imperfect microsatellites were sequenced from a dugong genome library. The application of microsatellites was not developed further than their location and characterisation. The hypervariable region 1 of mtDNA was sequenced for a total of 103 dugongs, as well as in an outgroup, the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris). Among the dugong sequences, 39 variable sites and 37 haplotypes (specific DNA sequences) were found. Phylogenetic trees constructed from the mtDNA haplotypes showed three clusters: West Australian, East Australian and Asian. These haplotype clusters suggest that Asian and East Australian dugongs are more closely related to each other than either group is to the West Australian dugongs. Surprisingly, haplotypes of West Indian Ocean dugongs are extremely similar to the haplotypes of dugongs from East Australia despite their large geographical separation. This suggests that the West Indian Ocean and East Australian dugongs shared a more recent ancestor compared to the Asian or West Australian dugongs. The geographical range of the Asian mtDNA haplotypes does not overlap with the Australian haplotypes. The two Australian mtDNA haplotype clusters overlap geographically in the Great Barrier Reef region. The intraspecific genetic partitioning of dugong populations from Australia, Asia, and the West Indian Ocean, can be partly explained in terms of historical geography. The distinction of the two Australian mtDNA haplotype clusters may be attributed to the Torres Strait (land bridge) acting as a periodic barrier to dugong movements during the Pleistocene low sea level phases. It is of particular interest to management that West Australian haplotypes have such a limited spread to the south and east Australian dugong range. Similarly, East Australian haplotypes do not extend north and west along the Australian coast beyond Torres Strait. Considering the dugong's potential for dispersal, the spread of the two Australian haplotype clusters is remarkably limited. Dugongs have a high intraspecific genetic diversity (average nucleotide diversity = 3.425, and haplotypic diversity = 0.766), and a rate of evolution (suggested to be 2% per Myr per lineage for the HVR-l) that is comparable to most land mammals. The suggested low level of female mediated gene flow between neighbouring populations indicates that successful recolonisation of a depleted area may be extremely slow. For conservation management of the Australian dugong, populations should be treated as distinct units with some degree of overlap. To maintain continuity among these populations, and to preserve the existing high intraspecific genetic diversity, management initiatives should be directed at limiting further fragmentation of the dugongs' range.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the early works of Raoul Duguay. Our study focuses on the first two collections of poem (ruts [1966] and or le cycle du sang dure donc [1967]), while examining Duguay’s parallel production as an experimental musical artist and eventually songwriter. Hereby, our study wishes to unveil the close ties between poetry and what could be considered as its popular derivatives: songwriting. Indeed, a significant number of poets wrote songs, especially among the proponent of the counterculture. Therefore, the first chapter will present a portrayal of Quebec’s cultural history that underlies the ties between songwriters, poets and artists in general in the 1960s. Furthermore, it will lay the theoretical framework to address the song as a study object. The second chapter studies the notion of lyricism in Quebec’s early modern poetry. It will study the use of song – or singing – as a metaphor, to demonstrate how it later loses its relevancy in regard of the modern poetry, which prefers the use of speech as metaphor. This shift heralds a change of paradigm in approaching lyricism and the lyrical subject. However, it will appear that Duguay persists in using song and singing metaphors – as well as speech – as he experiences language in its vocal and oral undertone. The third chapter studies the context – Quebec’s counterculture – in which the ties between poetry and song are tighten around the question of their function. It addresses the notion of popular art and its legitimacy.
