Mahādeva, the “Indian Oedipus”, is in some sources blamed for the initial schism between the two main branches of the early Buddhist sects, the Mahāsāṃghikas and the Sthaviras. In this paper I examine a version of the story of Mahādeva found in the Tibetan Dunhuang manuscript labelled IOL Tib J 26, showing that it contains evidence supporting the hypothesis that this story reached Tibet through China. This essay discusses Li Bai’s yuefu poem “Qiangjin jiu” 將進酒 as it appears in three different manuscripts from Dunhuang and a Northern Song printed edition. By analyzing the work on the levels of document, text, and meaning, I argue that its varied instantiations result in meaningfully different experiences of the poem for readers and listeners. Not only do these documents differ physically, the texts of the work they contain vary considerably as well (including that of best known line in the poem). The handwritten manuscript entitled “Sound Glosses on Dabanruojing 大般若經音義 (Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, Vol. II),” one of the collections of Ishiyama Temple 石山寺 in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, is generally regarded as having been made sometime from the last phase of the Nara 奈良 period (710-784) to the beginning of the Heian 平安 period (794-1185).
