Abstract:
AbstractAlciato's Parergon iuris libri duodecim belongs to the tradition of humanist notebooks which begins with Valla's Elegantiae and finds its most important representative in Poliziano's Miscellanea. It purports to provide explanations of difficulties found in the Corpus iuris civilis based on Alciato's reading in non-legal texts. However, it is apparent that he is also seeking to demonstrate his competence in the emendation and explication of these literary and historical texts. The remarks he is led to make about "grammatici" and "rhetores" are revealing of his personal attitudes and symptomatic of the evolution of attitudes in the world of education.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe dice tower, orpyrgus,an ancient device for rolling dice, was an everyday object in the Roman world, but up to now only two towers, from Germany and Egypt, have been found. In re-examining a group of bone box-casings from Richborough Roman Fort, however, the author has found that some of these casings must have belonged to such a tower. This article shows how this dice tower may have been constructed. The author also summarises the literary and artistic evidence for dice towers, and shows how the rosette decoration on this tower links it to the Roman game of Duodecim Scripta.

Abstract:
This paper considers the small glass objects often called counters, which are common finds at Pompeii, and normally thought to have been used in playing games. An assemblage of over 500 stratigraphically dated examples from Insula VI.1 are examined, and the colour and size of this group are compared to a dataset of first-centuryadglass counters found in graves where they can be shown with certainty to be part of gaming sets. The comparisons show that the bulk of the Pompeii counters are very unlikely to have been used in gaming, a conclusion that is supported by the types of counters that would have been necessary to play games such asludus latrunculorumandludus duodecim scriptorum. Other functions are considered and it is suggested that many of the Pompeiian counters might have been used for interior decoration. The rise of a specialist production of counters that could have been used in gaming is demonstrated, and it is suggested this might have implications for the development of craft specialization and demonstrate the rise of leisure time in the first centuryad.

Abstract:
Continental authors and editors often sought to ground alchemical writing within a long-established, coherent and pan-European tradition, appealing to the authority of adepts from different times and places. Greek, Latin and Islamic alchemists met both in person and between the covers of books, in actual, fictional or coincidental encounters: a trope utilised in Michael Maier’s Symbola aureae mensae duodecim nationum (1617). This essay examines how works attributed to an English authority, George Ripley (d. c. 1490), were received in central Europe and incorporated into continental compendia. Placed alongside works by the philosophers of other nations, Ripley’s writings helped affirm the unity and truth of alchemy in defiance of its critics. His continental editors were therefore concerned not only with the provenance of manuscripts and high-quality exemplars, but by a range of other factors, including the desire to suppress controversial material, intervene in contemporary polemics, and defend their art. In the resulting compilations, the vertical axis of alchemy’s long, diachronic tradition may be compared to the horizontal plane of pan-European alchemy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Takve su bilješke potvrđene u djelima francuskoga lingvista Guillauma Postela (Linguarum duodecim characteribus differentium alphabetum, 1538., Pariz) te švicarskih filologa Theodora Bibliandera (De ratione communi omnium linguarum et litterarum commentarius, 1548., Zürich) i Conrada Gesnera (Mithridates sive de differentiis linguarum tum veterum tum quae hodie apud diversas nationes in toto orbe terrarum in usu sunt, 1555., Zürich). U humanističkim je početcima kontrastivne lingvistike sudjelovao i jedan hrvatski latinist. Riječ je o Bartolu Đurđeviću i njegovu djelu o nevoljama kršćanskih zarobljenika pod turskom vlašću (De afflictione tam captivorum quam etiam sub Turcae tributo viventium Christianorum, 1544., Antverpen).

Kuhlberg, Henna, Sari Kujala, Iiris Hörhammer, and Tuomas Koskela. "STAR Duodecim eHealth Tool to Recognize Chronic Disease Risk Factors and Change Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices Among the Long-Term Unemployed: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Validation Study." JMIR Research Protocols 10, no. 6 (June 1, 2021): e27668. http://dx.doi.org/10.2196/27668.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Lifestyle choices and socioeconomic status have a significant impact on the expected onset of diseases, age of death, and risk factors concerning long-term illnesses and morbidity. STAR is an online health examination tool, which gives users a report that includes an evaluation of their life expectancy and an estimated risk for developing common long-term illnesses based on questions about health, characteristics, lifestyle, and quality of life. Objective The goals of this study are to (1) review the capacity of STAR to recognize morbidity risks in comparison to a traditional nurse-led health examination and patient-reported health challenges; (2) evaluate the user experience and usability of STAR; and (3) assess the potential impact of STAR on the health confidence and motivation of patients to make healthier lifestyle choices. Methods This mixed methods validation study will consist of a quantitative part (questionnaires) and a qualitative part (phone interviews and open-ended questions from the questionnaires). The participants will include 100 long-term unemployed individuals attending a health check for the unemployed. The participants will be recruited from three Finnish public health centers in Espoo, Hämeenlinna, and Tampere. At the health centers, the participants will use STAR and attend a nurse’s health check. Surveys with multiple-choice and open-ended questions will be collected from the participants, the nurse, and a study assistant. The questionnaires include questions about the participant’s background and health challenges from the patient and nurse points of view, as well as questions about how well the health challenges matched the STAR report. The questionnaires also gather data about user experience, health confidence, and usability of STAR. A study assistant will fill out an observer’s form containing questions about use time and possible problems encountered while using STAR. A sample of the unemployed participants will be interviewed by telephone subsequently. For the quantitative data, descriptive statistics and a reliability analysis will be performed, and mean sum scores will be computed for the study variables. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data will be performed. Results This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Expert Responsibility Area of Tampere University Hospital in June 2020 (ETL Code R20067). Data collection will begin in June 2021 and will take approximately 3-6 months. Conclusions Online health examinations can improve the effectiveness of primary prevention in health care by supporting efficient evidence-based morbidity risk estimation and motivating patients to change unhealthy behaviors. A multimethod approach is used to allow for assessment of the tool’s usefulness from the points of view of both professionals and patients. This study will further provide a rich understanding of how the tool can be used as part of routine health checks, and how and why the tool may or may not motivate users for making healthier lifestyle choices. Abstract:
Abstract A 72-year-old man was referred to the inflammatory bowel disease clinic for evaluation for possible Crohn disease. The patient was diagnosed with pan-ulcerative colitis in the late 1960s. He had medically refractory disease and required a total proctocolectomy with end ileostomy in the early 1970s. Since surgery, the patient has done well with his end ileostomy and has not required any inflammatory bowel disease medications. Over the past 14 months, he has developed intermittent foul-smelling serosanguinous drainage from his previous drained pilonidal cyst. His local gastroenterologist raised the concern for possible Crohn disease with perianal involvement. He has a significant family history of Crohn disease in his father. Past medical history includes chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, gout, and arthritis. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) revealed diffuse brown to black speckled/tigroid spots in the entire examined duodenum. Duodenal biopsy showed scattered clusters of macrophages containing dark pigmented granules within the apical tips of the lamina propria. These pigmented granules were focally positive with iron staining. No villous blunting, intraepithelial lymphocytosis, granuloma, or significant inflammation was identified. The distinctive endoscopic and histologic features are diagnostic of pseudomelanosis duodeni. Pseudomelanosis duodeni is a rare benign entity characterized by diffuse black tigroid spots and aggregates of pigment-laden macrophages in the lamina propria. Results of iron staining are characteristically variable. Pseudomelanosis duodeni is seen in middle-aged to elderly adults. Most of the patients with pseudomelanosis duodeni are asymptomatic. Although the exact etiology remains unknown, pseudomelanosis duodeni has been reported to be associated with several medical conditions such as end-stage renal disease, hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and medications, including oral iron therapy, furosemide, hydralazine, thiazide, and iron sulfate. Pathologists should be aware of this rare condition of the duodenum to make an accurate diagnosis of this rare entity.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: We dissected and described the macroscopic anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract of the donkey. Materials and Methods: Eleven domestic donkeys of both sexes from Tunisia were used for this study. Results: Although statistically insignificant, length values of the gastrointestinal tract pertaining to the females were generally higher than those pertaining to the males. The ostium cardiacum was very narrow and its diameter was 4.42 ± 0.57 mm in the males and 6 ± 1.22 mm in females. In the first part of the duodenum, we found papilla duodeni major and papilla duodeni minor. Both papillae were located very near to each other with a distance less than 1 cm and very near to the ostium pyloricum. The cecum was divided in parts of basis, corpus and apex. Three flexures divided the ascending colon into four parts: right ventral, left ventral, left dorsal and right dorsal. The cecum, left ventral colon and right dorsal colon had more evident sacculations (Haustra ceci and coli) (Figure 5). Teniae numbers were constant in all animals as 4, 4, 4, 1, 3 and 2 for cecum, right ventral colon, left ventral colon, left dorsal colon, right dorsal colon and descending colon, respectively. Conclusion: Although the gross anatomy of the intestines of the donkey was similar to the domestic horse in general, we detected some differences between these equine species.
