Ginseng radix (GR) is often used in traditional Japanese kampo medicine. We studied the effect of GR on glucose and maltose transport in rat and human duodenal mucosa by Using's method, and on smooth muscle movement in rat duodenal muscle by Magnus' method. GR inhibited absorption of glucose or maltose in rat and human duodenal mucosa, but increased duodenal muscle movement. It suggests that the inhibition of sugar absorption by GR is more dominant than enhancement of duodenal muscle movement by GR.

Abstract:
Abstract: The epithelial intermediate-conductance calcium/calmodulin-regulated KCa3.1 channel is considered to be a regulator of intestine function by controlling chloride secretion and water/salt balance. Yet, little is known about the functional importance of KCa3.1 in the intestinal epithelium in vivo. Our objective was to determine the impact of epithelial-specific inducible overexpression of a KCa3.1 transgene (KCa3.1+) and of inducible suppression (KCa3.1−) on intestinal homeostasis and function in mice. ABSTRACT Dermatomyositis (DM) is an inflammatory disease of the muscles and skin. Severe gastrointestinal (GI) involvement, characterized by GI bleeding and perforation secondary to underlying vasculopathy, is rarely seen. We describe a case of newly diagnosed DM in a 75-year-old woman who presented with a rash and muscle weakness. She then had sudden onset of hematemesis and was found to have duodenal ulcers due to leukocytoclastic vasculitis from her DM. Our aim was to highlight the need for recognition of GI involvement in adults with DM.

The present study evaluated the efficacy of autologous myoblast sheet transplantation for the prevention of late perforation after duodenal ESD in a porcine model.
