Abstract:
Introduction. Dulpex and color duplex ultrasonography of lower limb arteries are valuable non-invasive diagnostic methods in the pathology of vascular diseases and a major step in diagnostics and in follow-up of hemodynamic and morphologic characteristics. Color Duplex Sonography. The method consists of image analysis and analysis of Doppler information. Real-time-B mode is used to visualize the anatomy of blood vessels and other pathological lesions. Doppler information based on the Doppler effect determine the pulse wave i.e. the shape of flow velocity - hemodynamic characteristics. Spectral analysis is the most important element ofDoppler examination of the lower limb peripheral arteries. Based on the spectral analysis, there are four stages of lower limb arterial disease: normal findings - 1%-19% diameter reduction; medium stenosis - artery diameter reduction of 20%-49%; high level stenosis - artery diameter reduction of 50%-100%; occlusion - no flow detected within the imaged arterial segment. In the first place, both iliac arteries are examined, which is followed with femoral, popliteal and crural arteries. The examination of iliac arteries is carried out with a 3.5 MHz transducer, and other peripheral arteries of the lower limbs are examined with a 7,5 or 5 MHz transducer. Conclusion. Color Doppler is an extremely valuable diagnostic method in detecting pathology of the lower limb arteries. With high reliability level arterial insufficiency and pathological arterial segments are diagnosed by a duplex-Doppler. .

Abstract:
A survey of experimental results relating crop management to grain yield was conducted for wheat and other crops on duplex and non-duplex soils in the wheatbelt of Western Australia. Increases in grain yield of wheat due to improved agronomic practices on duplex soils were almost as great as on other soils. Early sowing improved yield more on duplex soils than on other soils, but the response to applied nitrogen was more variable, possibly related to the reduced efficiency of uptake of applied nitrogen. The yield advantage for a semi-dwarf cultivar (Aroona) over a tall cultivar (Garnenya) was less (6%) on duplex soils than on other soils (29%). The optimum seed rate was 27% greater on duplex than on other soils. Increases in both grain yield and grain quality due to the application of potassium were large on 1 duplex soil. Water use efficiency in grain production was similar on duplex and other soils where seasonal water use did not exceed about 350 mm. At 1 location in the eastern wheatbelt, yields of wheat, barley, lupins and peas grown on a duplex soil were compared with yields on 2 other soils. Wheat was the most productive crop on the duplex soil, while barley yielded most on the other soils. All crops, except lupins, yielded less on the duplex soil. Experiments with 2 lupin cultivars grown on duplex and other soils on the south coast of Western Australia (average growing season rainfall >300 mm) showed that both cultivars yielded less on duplex soils, but 1 cultivar required slightly fewer plants to achieve its maximum yield on the duplex soils. This survey of experimental results in Western Australia shows that duplex soils are no less productive than other soils when results are averaged over all crops and locations. We conclude, however, that different management practices may be required to improve yields on duplex compared with other soils.

Abstract:
In-band full duplex wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol is essential in order to enable higher layers of the protocol stack to exploit the maximum benefits from physical layer full duplex technology. Unlike half duplex wireless local area network, a full duplex MAC protocol has to deal with several unique issues and challenges that arise because of the dynamic nature of the wireless environment. In this paper, we have discussed several existing full duplex MAC protocols and have shown qualitative comparisons among these full duplex MAC protocols. Full duplex in-band wireless communication has the potential to double the capacity of wireless network. Inter-client Interference (ICI) is a hindrance in achieving double spectral efficiency of the in-band full-duplex wireless medium. In this paper, we have classified existing solutions to the ICI problem and compared the solutions with respect to the proposed approaches, their advantages and disadvantages. We have also identified and discussed several issues and challenges of designing a full duplex MAC protocol. Results of qualitative comparisons of various wireless full duplex MAC protocols may be applied to design new protocols as well as researchers may find the identified issues and challenges helpful to solve various problems of a full duplex MAC protocol.

Abstract:
FeS solid lubrication duplex layer was prepared on the surface of 45 steel by ion nitrocarburizing-ion sulphurizing process. The sulphide grains in micron and nano scale and holes distributing equably on the duplex layer. The n-Al2O3 particles in liquid paraffin oil were set into the holes in micron and nano scale of the duplex layer by using vacuum dipping process to prepare the n-Al2O3/FeS solid lubrication duplex layer. Friction and wear performances of the n-Al2O3/FeS solid lubrication duplex layer were investigated to be excellent under different loads and temperatures. The causes are as follows: the solid lubrication function of FeS solid lubrication duplex layer, the “micron nano bearing” function of the nanoparticles embedded in the micron nano pores of FeS solid lubrication duplex layer, and oil lubrication are integrated by nanoparticles/FeS solid lubrication duplex layer and exert synergic lubrication function under high temperature and over loading condition. so the coefficients of friction and volume loss of the n-Al2O3/FeS solid lubrication duplex layer under load 60N and temperature 150°C are 10% and 31.3% lower than those of the FeS solid lubrication duplex layer lubricated by the n-Al2O3 additive, respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract Beyond the consensus definition of G-quadruplex-forming motifs with tracts of continuous guanines, G-quadruplexes harboring bulges in the G-tetrad core are prevalent in the human genome. Here, we study the incorporation of a duplex hairpin within a bulge of a G-quadruplex. The NMR solution structure of a G-quadruplex containing a duplex bulge was resolved, revealing the structural details of the junction between the duplex bulge and the G-quadruplex. Unexpectedly, instead of an orthogonal connection the duplex stem was observed to stack below the G-quadruplex forming a unique quadruplex–duplex junction. Breaking up of the immediate base pair step at the junction, coupled with a narrowing of the duplex groove within the context of the bulge, led to a progressive transition between the quadruplex and duplex segments. This study revealed that a duplex bulge can be formed at various positions of a G-quadruplex scaffold. In contrast to a non-structured bulge, the stability of a G-quadruplex slightly increases with an increase in the duplex bulge size. A G-quadruplex structure containing a duplex bulge of up to 33 nt in size was shown to form, which was much larger than the previously reported 7-nt bulge. With G-quadruplexes containing duplex bulges representing new structural motifs with potential biological significance, our findings would broaden the definition of potential G-quadruplex-forming sequences.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the outage probability and ergodic capacity performances for full-duplex mode in two-way amplify-and-forward relay channels. The two-way relay channels which consist of two source nodes and a single relay node working in full-duplex mode, are assumed as independent and identically distributed as Rayleigh fading. The self-interference or loop interference of the relay is unavoidably investigated for full-duplex mode. And the close-form expressions for the outage probability and ergodic capacity of full-duplex mode are derived, considering both loop interference and the coefficients of two-way relay amplify-and-forward channels. To further facilitate the performance of full-duplex mode, the half-duplex modes over different transmission time slots are analyzed. Simulation results point out the effect of loop interference on outage probability and ergodic capacity of two-way amplify-and-forward relay channels with full-duplex mode and show that full-duplex mode can achieve better performance in terms of capacity and even outperform half-duplex modes in the presence of loop interference.

Full text
Abstract:
The full-duplex transmission protocol has been widely investigated in the literature in order to improve radio spectrum usage efficiency. Unfortunately, due to the effect of imperfect self-interference suppression, the change in transmission power and path loss of non-line-of-sight fading channels will strongly affect performance of full-duplex transmission mode. This entails that the full-duplex transmission protocol is not always a better selection compared to the traditional half-duplex transmission protocol. Considering solar energy-harvesting-powered cognitive radio networks (CRNs), we investigate a joint full-duplex/half-duplex transmission switching scheduling and transmission power allocation in which we utilize the advantages of both half-duplex and full-duplex transmission modes for maximizing the long-term throughput of cognitive radio networks. First, we formulate the transmission rate of half-duplex and full-duplex links for fading channels between cognitive user and base station in which the channel gain is assumed to follow an exponential distribution. Afterward, by considering the availability probability of the primary channel, the limitation of the energy-harvesting capacity of the cognitive user, and the transmission capacity of half-duplex and full-duplex links, we describe the problem in terms of long-term expected throughput. The problem is then solved by adopting the partially observable Markov decision process framework to find the optimal transmission policy for the transmission pair between cognitive user and base station in order to maximize the long-term expected throughput. The optimal policy consists of either the half-duplex or the full-duplex transmission protocols as well as the corresponding amount of transmission energy in each time slot. In addition, to reduce the complexity in formulation and calculation, we also apply the actor–critic-based learning method to solve the considered problem. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated by comparing it with a conventional scheme in which the context of energy harvesting and long-term throughput is not considered.

Abstract:
Objective: To compare the results obtained by duplex ultrasound imaging and ascending and descending phlebography in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Design: Prospective comparison between venography and duplex ultrasound imaging in a single patient group with chronic venous insufficiency. Setting: Private vascular clinic in Puerto Rico. Patients: Twenty-one patients presenting with clinical evidence of venous disease of the lower limb. Main outcome measures: Presence of valvular incompetence in deep and superficial veins as indicated by duplex ultrasound imaging and ascending and descending phlebography. Results: Duplex ultrasound imaging showed twice as many patients with popliteal vein incompetence (eight veins compared with four veins) and twice as many incompetent long saphenous veins (14 detected by duplex, eight detected by venography). In the proximal venous system, 13 common femoral veins were thought incompetent on venography, but only seven on duplex scanning; in the superficial femoral vein, 11 were incompetent on venography and three on duplex scanning. Conclusion: Duplex ultrasound scanning provides greater sensitivity for detection of valvular incompetence in distal veins compared with venography. Descending phlebography is poor in demonstrating distal venous valvular incompetence.

Abstract:
Lower limb arterial calcification associates with poor cardiovascular outcomes. The gold standard method of assessment is via computed tomography, yet duplex is our primary imaging modality. Currently, there is no standardized objective assessment of lower limb arterial calcification using duplex. We aimed to define the role of duplex in the assessment of lower limb arterial calcification. Initial consensus was achieved between a cohort of vascular scientists on objective imaging specific markers of lower limb arterial calcification severity using duplex. This resulted in objective descriptions to grade calcification from 0 to 3 (no calcification through to severe calcification) which formed the duplex lower limb arterial calcification score. Reproducibility of the duplex lower limb arterial calcification score was assessed and further validation was undertaken by comparing the duplex lower limb arterial calcification with computed tomography–based assessment in a separate cohort of 44 patients investigated with both modalities. The intra- and inter-class correlation coefficient were > 0.87 . The Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the duplex and CT based arterial calcium measurements was (ρ = 0.644, P < .001). The duplex lower limb arterial calcification score provides a standardized and reproducible modality for assessment of lower limb arterial calcification and may aid with risk stratification in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the most common anomaly associated with duplex systems. In addition to an uncomplicated duplex system, reflux can also be secondary in the presence of an ectopic ureterocele with duplex systems. Controversy exists in regard to the initial and most definitive management of these anomalies when they coexist. This paper will highlight what is currently known about duplex systems and VUR, and will attempt to provide evidence supporting the various surgical approaches to an ectopic ureterocele and duplex system and the implications of concomitant VUR.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the robustness of first-order coherence characterized by the Laplacian spectrum in duplex networks with varying interlayer linking topologies and node connections of two layers under degree, closeness and eigenvector centrality indicators. The interlayer linking weight and linking rate play an important role in the coherence of duplex networks. The increasing larger linking weight and linking rate make the duplex networks more consensus. In addition, the positively, negatively and randomly correlated linking patterns display diverse consensus behaviors in duplex networks with different interlayer connections. Finally, the linking pattern under the eigenvector centrality has a profound impact on the coherence in the constructed duplex networks. The obtained results of duplex networks may help with a deeper understanding of consensus in multilayer networks.

A simulation study was performed to investigate methods for mapping single-dose (simplex) and double-dose (duplex) markers, and for identification of homologous chromosomes in an autotetraploid species, and to see how the map accuracy depends on the population size. An initial population of 1000 individuals was simulated, with 30 simplex and 10 duplex markers, and recombination fractions and lod scores were calculated between all pairs of markers. These were used to test the feasibility of mapping the simplex and duplex markers simultaneously. Smaller populations, from 500 to 75 individuals, were then simulated, and the estimates of the pairwise recombination fractions and the derived maps were compared with the true map. It was found that the accuracy of the estimates depended strongly on the type of markers involved, with simplex–simplex coupling pairs being most reliable and simplex–simplex repulsion pairs and duplex–duplex pairs in any configuration but coupling being least reliable. Maps can be assembled using recombination fractions and lod scores from pairs of simplex–simplex markers (coupling and repulsion), duplex–simplex (coupling and repulsion) and duplex–duplex (coupling). The agreement between the map order and the true order was good, although the map distance was generally underestimated at small sample sizes.

Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate initial technical success, procedural complications, and 12-month patency of duplex-guided angioplasty compared to conventional fluoroscopically-guided procedures. Methods: One hundred four patients (65 men; mean age 69 years) who underwent duplex-guided femoropopliteal angioplasty were compared to 104 patients undergoing fluoroscopically-guide procedures who were matched for age, sex, baseline ankle-brachial index (ABI), and length and grade of lesion. Patients were followed for 12 months, and restenosis was assessed by ABI and duplex sonography. Results: Technical success was achieved in 88 (84.6%) patients from the duplex-guided group and in 102 (98.1%) control patients (p=0.001). Periprocedural complications occurred in 12.5% (n=13) and 18.3% (n=19), respectively (p=0.4). Contrast-induced transient renal impairment was observed in 7 (6.7%) patients in the fluoroscopic group. One hundred (96.1%) patients in the duplex and 102 (98.1%) patients in the fluoroscopic group completed the 12-month follow-up. Restenosis was found in 35 (39.8%) patients of the duplex group and in 38 (37.2%) patients of the fluoroscopic group (p=0.8). Conclusions: Technical success of duplex-guided procedures was significantly lower compared to fluoroscopic angioplasty; complications and 12-month patency were similar with both techniques. Duplex-guided angioplasty may be a feasible alternative, particularly for patients at high risk for contrast-induced complications.

Abstract:
The paper aims to interpret the term “homo duplex” used by Joseph Conrad to characterize his personality in the letter to the historian Kazimierz Waliszewski. The author presents various meanings of this duality as Conrad was a citizen of the Russian Empire, and then of Great Britain. His profession was also twofold: first he was a French seaman, then an English seaman to become finally an outstanding representative of English literature. As an English writer, he emphatically emphasized his links with Polish culture, in particular with the literature of the Romantic period.

Abstract:
The duplex Nickel–Boron–Titania/Nickel ( Ni – B – TiO 2/ Ni ) coatings were deposited on mild steel by using two baths with Ni as the inner layer. TiO 2 nanoparticles were incorporated into the Ni – B coatings as the outer layer by using solid particle mixing method. The microstructure, morphology and corrosion resistance of the duplex Ni – B – TiO 2/ Ni nanocomposite coatings were systemically investigated. The results show that the duplex interface was uniform and the adhesion between two layers was very good. The microhardness of duplex Ni – B – TiO 2/ Ni coating was much higher than the Ni coating due to the outer layer of Ni – B – TiO 2 coating. The corrosion resistance of the duplex Ni – B – TiO 2/ Ni coating was also significantly improved comparing with single Ni – B coating. The Ni – B –10 g/L TiO 2/ Ni coating was found to have the best corrosion resistance among these duplex coatings. This type of duplex Ni – B – TiO 2/ Ni coating, with high hardness and good corrosion resistance properties, should be able to find broad applications under adverse environmental conditions.

Abstract:
This work presents the investigation of a boriding process on two grades of stainless steel namely UNS32750 super duplex stainless steel and UNSS31803 duplex stainless steel in order to improve material properties and possibly to reduce catastrophic failure of industrial components. Usage of duplex stainless steels has become customary in the fields of oil and refinery, marine and pipeline applications due to increased corrosion resistance; however, these materials exhibit low wear characteristics. To overcome this problem, in this work the pack boriding process was employed. Evaluation of effects of the boriding process on the microstructure and mechanical properties was performed using scanning electron and optical microscopy, Vickers hardness tests and wear tests. It was shown that the 4 h process resulted in the greatest boriding layer thickness yielding the maximum surface hardness of 1407 HV in the super duplex stainless steel UNS32750 while this value was 1201 HV in the duplex stainless steel UNSS31803. Wear resistance of borided materials were up to 6-fold greater than those of non - treated materials. Also, the borided duplex materials were shown to be more suitable for industrial applications for valve and shaft components as compared to the boronized super duplex stainless steel.
