Abstract:
A collision integral for three-wave interactions in a collisionless plasma is derived from the full plasma description by means of the Klimontovich–Dupree and Maxwell equations. This collision integral differs from its traditional counterpart (calculated within the framework of Vlasov theory) by an additional functional factor. This means that the changes in the wave spectral density, which are induced by three-wave interactions, occur with a rate other than that calculated in Vlasov theory.

Abstract:
Observations of the red, bright supergiant star a Orionis (Betelgeuse) during the past decade show significant variations in UV line fluxes and line shifts. Dupree et al. (1987) pointed out that the data from 1984-1987 indicates a periodicity of slightly more than one year in the B magnitude, UV continuum, and Mg II emission line fluxes. Our data shows that this conclusion applies to other strong and medium strong chromospheric lines as well. The variations seem to affect also the relative strength of lines within multiplets.

Abstract:
Alcohol misuse among older people has now been investigated for over 30 years. Schonfeld and Dupree previously described studies of alcohol use and abuse in the USA and UK, categories of older problem drinkers, age-inappropriate assessments, and examples of age-specific treatment. This review addresses more recent studies on drinking behaviour across several countries, screening assessment for older adults, alcohol problems in primary care medical settings, current age-specific treatment programmes, and treatment recommendations by expert panels, as well as in-home detoxification and use of the medication naltrexone as adjuncts to treatment.

Abstract:
Spectroscopic observations of hot white dwarfs utilizing the Explorer (IUE) high resolution spectrograph have led to the important discovery of ion absorption features (undetectable at low resolution) which have been ascribed to wind outflow in some cases (cf. Bruhweiler and Kondo 1983) and formation at the photosphere (cf. Sion and Guinan 1983; Bruhweiler and Kondo 1983; Dupree and Raymond 1982) in others. These line features, often weak and sharp, have presented a fundamental challenge to current understanding of the complex interplay of physical processes which control observed surface abundances in white dwarfs: gravitational/thermal diffusion, selective radiative support of ions, mass loss, convective dilution and mixing, and accretion (cf. the review by Vauclair, this volume and references therein).

Full text
Abstract:
The nonthermal diffusion effects on the dispersion equations of ion-acoustic space-charge wave (SCW) in a nonthermal plasma column composed of nonthermal turbulent electrons and cold ions are investigated based on the analysis of normal modes and the separation of variables. It is found that the real portion of the wave frequency of the SCW in a Maxwellian plasma is greater than that in a nonthermal plasma. It is also found that the magnitude of the damping rate of the SCW decreases with an increase of the spectral index of the nonthermal plasma. It is also shown that the magnitude of the scaled damping rate increases with an increase of the Dupree diffusion coefficient. Moreover, the influence of the nonthermal character of the nonthermal plasma on the damping rate is found to be more significant in turbulent plasmas with higher diffusion coefficient. The variations of the wave frequency and the growth rate due to the characteristics of nonthermal diffusion are also discussed.

Abstract:
Strong high temperature emission lines in the EUVE spectra of binary stars containing cool components (Alpha Aur [Capella], 44ι Boo, Lambda And, and VY Ari) provide the basis to define reliably the differential emission measure of hot plasma. The emission measure distributions for the short-period (P ≤ 13 d) binary systems show a high temperature enhancement over a relatively narrow temperature region similar to that originally found in Capella (Dupree et al. 1993). The emission measure distributions of rapidly rotating single stars 31 Com and AB Dor also contain a local enhancement of the emission measure although at different temperatures and width from Capella, suggesting that the enhancement in these objects may be characteristic of rapid rotation of a stellar corona. This feature might be identified with a (polar) active region, although its density and absolute size are unknown; in the binaries Capella and VY Ari, the feature is narrow and it may arise from an interaction region between the components.

Abstract:
Tracheal mites, Acarapis woodi (Rennie) (Acari: Tarsonemidae), are important parasites of honeybees, Apis mellifera L. (Morse and Flottum 1997). They enter the prothoracic tracheae and feed through the walls on haemolymph. Currently, these mites are controlled by applying 50 g of menthol crystals in a perforated bag per hive when ambient temperatures are 15°C or more. Even then, it takes 2 weeks for the menthol to perfuse the hive (Herbert et al. 1988; Wilson et al. 1990). In cold climates, sublimation of menthol is too slow to be effective in controlling mites, especially in spring and fall when control is most needed (Scott-Dupree and Otis 1992).Because menthol fumes enter the bees' trachea and kill the mites therein, it may be possible to kill the mites with menthol that is delivered to them via the haemolymph. Therefore, finding if menthol could become systemic when ingested by bees and it could kill tracheal mites by that route, an ingestible menthol medicament for the bees would hold potential for mite control (Kevan and Kevan 1997).

Abstract:
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 has prompted a large number of scholars and journalists to embark on the analysis of Afghan affairs. Even before the invasion, much valuable material was available in Western languages to the interested reader. The internal politics of Afghanistan had been studied by Louis Dupree, Vartan Gregorian, Hasan Kakar, Leon B. Poullada, and Richard S. Newell; Maxwell J. Fry and Gilbert Etienne had analysed the Afghan economy; and Afghanistan's international relations had been examined in detail by Ludwig W. Adamec. Indeed, a recent bibliography of works on Afghanistan has listed no fewer than 1,611 items dealing with Afghan history and politics. None the less, had it not been for the Soviet invasion, the study of Afghanistan would surely have remained the province of a few cognoscenti. In the wake of the invasion, however, a large body of literature on Afghanistan has been published, containing works varying in quality from the outstanding to the atrocious. An appraisal of the relative merits of some of the more widely cited studies therefore seems to be in order.

Full text
Abstract:
Feige 24 is a bright DA white dwarf which has been studied extensively both from ground-based and space-borne observatories. The best determination of its fundamental atmospheric parameters are that of Holberg, Wesemael, and Basile (1986) who have used detailed model atmosphere analyses in conjunction with optical, IUE, and Voyager data. They give log g = 7.23±0.35 and Te(103K) = 55±5. The question of the atmospheric composition is more involved as small traces of heavy elements would not be observable in the optical spectrum of such a hot, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. If it were isolated, Feige 24 would presumably only show the usual bland optical spectrum of a typical DA white dwarf, i.e. the hydrogen Balmer line series, but the presence of a M dwarf companion complicates its spectrum. On the other hand, Feige 24 belongs to a handful of hot DA white dwarfs sufficiently bright that ultraviolet spectroscopy in the high resolution mode of the IUE has been possible. Following the theoretical expectation of Vauclair, Vauclair, and Greenstein (1979), it was discovered that the photosphere of Feige 24 contains small amounts of C, N, and Si (Dupree and Raymond 1982). Spectral synthesis techniques used by Wesemael, Henry, and Shipman (1984) indicate the following abundances: log(C/H)=−6.4±0.6, log(N/H)=−5.3±1.0, and log(Si/H)=−6.3±0.9. The most plausible explanation to account for these small abundances is the influence of selective radiative forces possibly coupled to a weak wind (Chayer et al. 1987).

Abstract:
The study of the transmission and transformation of ancient science ismore than a study of which texts were translated, when, and by whom. It wasa complex process, better seen as beginning rather than ending with the translationof relevant books, for the heart of the process is the assimilation ratherthan the simple reception of the material. Scientific ideas move because peoplestudy books, compute with tables, and use instruments, not simply becausethey translate books, transcribe tables, or buy pretty artifacts. It sufficesto recall that the scholars of the Byzantine Empire, despite their status as thedirect heirs of the classical Greek scientific tradition and their direct accessto whatever classical Greek manuscripts the Islamic world eventually cameto possess-indeed to more of them and from an earlier date-were largelyuninterested in this knowleldge. Hence no account of the transmission of scientificknowledge can be complete if it does not recognize that it is, at root,an account of the activities of what Dupree has called "homo sapiens in asocial context."Two CaveatsAt the outset of this paper, two points mu5t be taken into consideration.First, although we may wish to study the whole process of the Islamic acquisitionof the foreign sciences as it took place over several centuries and overan area extending from Spain to Afghanistan, it must be realized that theexamples given refer to specific events that took place at specific times andin specific places. As a result, eminent Islamic thinkers and writers are quotedwithout any accompanying claim that each one is representative of all Islamicthinkers at all times and in all places. It is sufficient that when a person suchwithout any accompanying claim that each one is representative of all Islamic ...
