Full textThe building industry is turning increasingly to the use of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in order to improve many aspects of building construction: SCC offers several advantages in technical, economic, environmental and human terms. However, there are still some problems with regard to its durability, in terms of physical and chemical properties. The purpose of this research project was to study various durability characteristics of self-compacting concrete compared with reference samples of vibrated concrete (VC) with similar compressive strength, from 20 to 60 MPa. For this purpose, SCC and VC mixes were prepared using the same ingredients in identical proportions (except for the high performances concrete), the only difference being that calcareous filler and more superplasticizer was used for the SCC mixes and the possible use of a viscosity agent. Tests carried out on these samples revealed that creep was slightly higher for SCC and that there was no significant difference in the other mechanical (elasticity modulus, shrinkage) and physico-chemical properties (oxygen permeability, chloride diffusion, water absorption, carbonation and leaching by ammonium nitrate) of the two types of concrete

Full textConsolidation conditions are determining factors for the sustainability of conventional vibrated concrete as like as formulation parameters. In the case of self-consolidating concrete (SCC), due their fluidity, casting is done by free flow under the influence of their own weight. Consolidation in the forms is done without vibration due to their rheological characteristics. It is therefore reasonable to expect that the rheological characteristics of SCC would have a significant influence on the durability's properties. This thesis examines the possible links between the rheological characteristics of SCC and vis-à-vis durability's transport of aggressive agents. In total, Seventeen SCC mixtures covering a wide range of rheological properties were investigated. Three current rheological models were studied to determine the rheological parameters. In other hand, durability of cover concrete close of site conditions was studied on 6 partially reinforced beams and 3 semi-workable concrete vibrated slightly.Sorptivity test was used as indicator of vis-à-vis aggressive transport durability. The durability of the concrete cover layer in contact respectively with the wooden and PVC frame has been studied and the results were compared with the durability of interior bulk concrete. This study was made taking into account the exchange of water and aggregate arrangement against the formwork.Good correlation between initial plastic viscosity determined by the Bingham modified model or consistency coefficient determined by the Herschel-Bulkley model of SCC and the sorptivity measured during the first hours of testing is established. It is likely that the initial plastic viscosity or consistency coefficient has a marked influence on the volume of the largest capillary pores of concrete, which can significantly affect durability. The specific study of the concrete cover showed that its sorptivity depends on the type of formwork used because of water exchanges made between the concrete surface. Aggregate arrangement against the formwork was also modified. Sorptivity of the concrete cover of PVC is near but below that of the interior bulk concrete. Sorptivity of the concrete cover against wooden frame is significantly less than over of against PVC while being correlated with the plastic viscosity of modified Bingham or consistency coefficient of Herschel-Bulkley model

Full textAbstractBecause of the specificities of self-compacting concrete (SCC), especially regarding their high volume paste content and the presence of large amounts of mineral admixtures and substitutes, the behavior in fresh and hardened state and the durability of these concretes are strongly influenced by these two parameters. Some treated sediments acquire pozzolanic properties and can be used as additions orsubstitutes to the cement. This possibility makes of concrete technology a privileged way of enhancement. The present study aims to contribute to the enhancement of the treated mud of Chorfa and Fergoug dam (situated in west of Algeria) as a mineral partial substitute for CPA CEMI 42.5 cement in the composition of an economic and preferment mortars and self-compacting concretes. The aim is to compare the influence of the incorporation of this calcined mud to the natural pozzolana of Beni Saf (situated, also in west of Algeria) in (SCC) on their physical, mechanical behavior and their durability of these concretes in short, medium and long term. The study was conducted on four SCCs, the first based on 20% natural pozzolana Beni Saf (SCC-PZ), the second based on 20% of the calcined mud of Fergoug dam (SCC-VF) and of Chorfa dam (SCC-VC) and a control SCC without additions to the need for comparison .Apart from the economic interest of the SCCs based on calcined mud, our study showed that these concretes have comparable performances to that obtained on SCC based on natural pozzolana (SCC-PZ).In fact, concerning compressive strengths, our study indicate that the SCC with calcined mud ((SCC-VC) and (SCC-VF)) present the best results especially at long termThe results of the different following tests: the acid attack (HCl and H2SO4), carbonation and sulphate attack (Na2SO4 and MgSO4) show that the calcined mud has an influence roughly better than the natural pozzolana on the physic - mechanical behavior and durability of the SCC which it is incorporated.Key words: Dam of Chorfa – Dam of Fergoug – Calcined mud – Pozzolana – SCCcontaining mud - SCC containing pozzolana – Mechanical strength –Durability

Full textThis research work aims at designing performance-based specifications for durability of concrete from the equivalent performance concept. New European and French standards EN 206 on production and specification of concrete now allows performance-based methods instead of traditional prescriptive requirements on proportions. But these requirements remains as a reference, and equivalent performance has to be shown for each exposure condition. Each mechanism of degradation of concrete has to be analyzed in order to design suitable procedures to assess potential durability of concrete for a given exposure. Procedures consist mainly in accelerated tests of carbonation, chloride ingress, freeze/thaw, leaching, and sulfate attacks. Experimental programs have been designed to study sensitivity and reliability of indicators assessed from the tests. As a result, suitable procedures have been found to assess potential durability of concrete exposed to carbonation, chloride ingress, and leaching. Three tests and a mathematical model have been used to understand mechanisms and main parameters of resistance of concrete to external sulfate attacks, showing the influence of leaching and chemical properties of cimentitious materials. The selected procedures and indicators have been gathered in a guide for the French association of construction groups, which support this work
