Abstract:
Low C4 grass species abundance in understory environments is thought to be as a result of their high-light requirements, lack of photosynthetic advantage relative to C3 species in cooler environments, and an inability to adequately utilise sunflecks. This study sets out to investigate this theory, hypothesizing that C3 grass species outperform C4 grass species under the canopy, not as a result of quantum efficiency temperature effects, but as a result of C4 species inability to utilize short-duration sunflecks. Short sunflecks could result in a breakdown in assimilate movement between the meso

Pigeonpea (Cajanus Cajan [L.] Millsp.) ranks sixth in area and production in comparison to other grain legumes worldwide and is one of the most important grain legume crops of the tropics and sub-tropics (Nene & Sheila 1990). The crop is reputed to be well adapted to marginal conditions arid can produce an economic yield in soils characterized by moisture deficits (Pathak 1970; Whiteman etal. 1985; Troedson etal. 1990). Traditional pigeonpea varieties are normally grown under rainfed conditions after the beginning of a rainy season, mostly as an intercrop, and most of their reproductive

abstract: Shock loading produces a compressive stress pulse with steep gradients in density, temperature, and pressure that are also often modeled as discontinuities. When a material is subject to these dynamic (shock) loading conditions, fracture and deformation patterns due to spall damage can arise. Spallation is a dynamic material failure that is caused by the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of voids, with possible ejection of the surface of the material. Intrinsic defects, such as grain boundaries are the preferred initiation sites of spall damage in high purity materials. The focus o
