Pregnancy profoundly alters maternal physiology in response to the demands of the fetus. Cardiac output increases in response to an increase in heart rate and stroke volume. Insulin resistance and fetal preference for glucose switches maternal usage to that of predominantly fat consumption. We sought to fill this gap by exploring cardiac substrate utilization and metabolic regulation during late pregnancy in mice.
