Abstract:
The lay missionary movement became characteristic of the Chinese Peranakan identity and community in West Java in the mid-19th century. Lay evangelists played a major role in the formation of Christian Peranakan communities in Indramayu, Cirebon, Batavia, and Bandung. Peranakan communities were formed long before the Dutch mission agency paid attention to the Chinese community. While it is true that pioneers of the Christian Peranakan community first heard the gospel message from Dutch pastors, it does not mean that Chinese churches in West Java were merely a zending heritage. AbstractIn 1522 the Amsterdam printer Doen Pieterszoon published the first edition of the gospel according to St. Matthew in the vernacular. The text by Johan Pelt was a translation of Erasmus's Novum testamentum of 1516. The titlepage shows a woodcut of the evangelist of a type recurrent in several dutch bibles. Furthermore, the gospel contains six woodcuts of a rather emblematical character. Five of these depict an angel (the symbol for Matthew) holding in his hands, and surrounded by it, several objects, figures, and little scenes. Each of these are accompanied by a number, and are thus rel

Taking a purely literary analytic approach, this article explores use of the notion of justice in Petina Gappah’s collection of short stories entitled Rotten Row. Each story begins with a quotation from the Bible and reflects on the abortion of justice in the context of applied system; Roman-Dutch law, mob justice, karma or Ngozi (retributive spirit). The article explores the ironies represented in the stories with regard to the expectations of the execution of justice and what actually happens. The view that the sermon is an ‘open work of art’, promoted the awareness that the ‘meaning’ of a sermon is not fixed, but that possibilities are presented for the listeners to ‘assign meaning’. ‘Assigning meaning’ does not mean something fully ad libitum: ‘meaning’ is formed within the guidelines of the text from which a sermon stems. Introduction Explorations of the multimedia game format within cultural studies have been broadly approached from two perspectives: one -- the impact of technologies on user interaction particularly with regard to social implications, and the other -- human computer interactions within the framework of cybercultures. Another approach to understanding or speaking about games within cultural studies is to focus on the game experience as cultural practice -- as an activity or an event.
