Examining the worship preference of a congregation in order to enhance worshippers’ participation in song and music within the framework of six worship modelsThe important role of music and singing within the dialogue of the liturgy should never be underestimated. It is imperative for any congregation to understand its members’ preference to liturgical song and music. Knowledge gained from this understanding can assist congregations to make informed decisions with regard to the different forms and genres of church music and hymns which may enhance worshippers’ participation. AbstractThis article aims to provide insight into the nature, distribution and function of certain Middle Dutch translations of Latin hymns and sequences that originated in the circles of the Devotio Moderna. Unlike the vernacular versions in (most) Middle Dutch lay breviaries, which were used as texts for prayer in the context of private devotion, the translations in what I refer to as “vernacular mass and office books” functioned as subtitles to the Latin liturgy. In this article I wish to commemorate our cooperation, especially on Psalm 42, and our friendship. Speaking about God in Ephrem the Syrian An analysis of the theological language in the works of St Ephrem the Syrian is offered in this article. The author pays attention particularly to his ninth 'Hymn on the Church', of which he also presents a translation in Dutch. This hymn is a very good example of Ephrem’s perception of the relationship between theology and language. The paradox of transcendence and immanence of God make thinking and speaking about Him – this means theology – both possible and impossible. The approach is based especially on looking at the rapport likely to be achieved between audience and players (and via the players, with the playwrights), in actual performance. Attention is given to the permanent modes of human thought, that are unaffected by the ephemeralities of a particular period; attention is therefore drawn to the traps that may mislead the unwary twentieth-century critic, and some new insights a

Liturgical singing often includes various free songs (songs outside the official hymnal). In these spaces, spontaneous, communal hymn singing emerged as a form of ethnic and religious expression. Eye-witness accounts (diaries, medical and newspaper reports) of prison life in Afrikaner concentration camps reveal that the singing of Dutch psalm tunes and hymns occurred spontaneously at moments of personal and communal grief, as well as more formally in concentration camp funerals and prayer meetings.
