Abstract:
The sociocultural forms of accra, whose population is now an estimated 2.5 million people, grew form interactions with Europeans from the fifteenth century onward. By the end of the seventeenth century, there were three major European trading outposts on the coast—Ussher Fort (Dutch), James Fort (British), and Christiansborg Castle (Danish). Each European post imparted a particular character to its neighborhood and, more importantly, triggered specific dynamics of social struggle both between the locals and the Europeans and within each local group. Traces of the European influence can also be discerned in some of the street names—Bannerman Road, Hansen Road, Bruce Road, Lokko Road, Rev Richter Road, Joel Sonne Street—which evoke the Euro-African families that formed the earliest local elites. The postmodern maxims that reality is a product of language and that language is essentially unstable and contradictory are by now standard views in critical theory. But I sometimes wonder what conclusion the postmodernists would have come to if for their reflections they had taken not the history of Western philosophy but rather the evolution of the polyglot and hybrid forms of language, ideas, society, and culture that are abundant in the non-Western societies that make up the bulk of the world's population. Accra might have provided a rich site for such reflections.

Abstract:
Although haploids were successfully produced via irradiated pollen technique and anther culture in Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata, the haploidization efficiency is still low due to genotype dependence. Thus, as an alternative technique, the efficacy of the ovule culture was investigated. Ovules were extracted at different flowering time and then cultured on a solid MS medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), benzylaminopurine (BAP), thidiazuron (TDZ), and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to induce callogenesis and plant regeneration. The gynogenic response was influenced by the combination of plant growth regulators, genotype and culture time. The medium containing of 4.0 mg/l BAP + 0.05 mg/l NAA + 0.1 mg/l TDZ provided the highest response at anthesis time. Plantlets were rooted and elongated on a solid MS medium supplemented with 0.01 mg/l indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) + 1.0 mg/l BAP. The ploidy observations of 122 plants revealed that 70 plants were haploid, 46 plants were diploid and the others were mixoploid.

Abstract:
Hybrid incompatibility and F1 hybrid dysgenesis in the interspecific hybridization between pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) and winter squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) have been previously noted. For this reason, it is difficult to obtain F2 generations due to F1 sterility. However, back-crossing and add-crossing can be utilized to overcome these incompatibility barriers in interspecific hybridization. To date, few studies have focused on parental selection, the back-crossing process, and offspring characteristics related to interspecific hybridization. Hence, we explored the F1 seed acquisition rate, plant characteristics, and F2 generation fertility after interspecific back-crossing and add-crossing hybridization of C. moschata and C. maxima. Moreover, as a female parent, X-1 (C. moschata) yielded F1 seeds when crossed with winter squash (C. maxima) 10-04-3, 10-37, or 10-05-2. BC1F1 seeds and plants could be obtained with winter squash (C. maxima) as the recurrent parent. Some healthy F2 seeds and plants were obtained from the interspecific hybrids, including ZJ-13, ZJ-8, and ZJ-11. Further fruit nutrition quality analysis showed that the starch, polysaccharide, cellulose, and dry material contents of ZJ-7 and ZJ-8 were significantly higher than those of the parent pumpkin and winter squash lines. The bioflavonoid content of ZJ-8 was lower than that of its parents, and its soluble protein was at the median value. Meanwhile, the bioflavonoid content of ZJ-1 was lower than that of its parents, but its soluble protein was significantly higher. These results suggest that back-crossing and multi-crossing can overcome the barriers to interspecific crossing of C. moschata × C. maxima. Some interspecific hybrid fruits had nutritional contents much higher than those of their parent lines. Additionally, X-1 (C. maxima) was found to act as a bridge species in interspecific hybridization. Collectively, in this study, the barriers to interspecific hybridization of C. moschata × C. maxima were addressed through crossing methods and choice of parents, and the obtained results are expected to provide novel support for interspecific hybrid breeding between C. moschata and C. maxima.

Abstract:
Soil salinization due to climate change and intensive use of water and soil is increasing exponentially. Cucurbitaceae species are cultivated worldwide and the identification of salinity tolerant genotypes to be used as rootstock or scion for securing yield stability in salt affected agricultural areas is a research priority. In the present greenhouse study, we assessed the response to salinity (0 mM a non-salt control and 150 mM NaCl dissolved in the nutrient solution) in the seedlings of 30 genotypes of cucurbits grown in a floating hydroponic system. The species tested included 16 genotypes of Cucumis melo L. (CM1-16), 6 Citrullus vulgaris Schrad. (CV1-6), 2 interspecific hybrids of Cucurbita maxima Duch. × Cucurbita moschata Duch. (CMM-R1 and 2), 4 bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl. (LS1-4)), 1 Cucurbita moschata Duch. (CMO51-17), and 1 luffa (Luffa cylindrica Mill. (LC1)) species. Results highlighted different morphological and physiological traits between the species and genotypes and a different response to salt stress. We identified C. maxima × C.moscata interspecific hybrid CMM-R2, melon genotypes CM6, CM7, CM10, and CM16 together with watermelon genotypes CV2 and CV6 and bottle gourd LS4 as salt tolerant genotypes and possible candidates as salt resistant rootstock to be introduced in grafting programs.

Tupouniua, Sela Kali. "Investigation of Powdery Mildew on Kabocha Squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) in Tonga." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/14576.

Full text
Abstract:
Disease management of cucurbit powdery mildew pathogens caused by Golovinomyces cichoracearum and Podosphaera xanthii is largely based on extensive use of systemic fungicides. P. xanthii is a highly variable pathogen, having developed resistance to the major agrichemical groups including the demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides. The aim of this study was to investigate the powdery mildew disease and the causal pathogen occurring on Kabocha squash (Cucurbita maxima) in Tonga. The disease causes significant economic loss to production. A field disease survey conducted during the 2007 production season revealed widespread powdery mildew disease incidence >25%. There was no interaction between disease incidence and farm management practice. Powdery mildew disease severity was 5-25% in regions and 5->25% in districts. There was no correlation between powdery mildew disease severity and farm practice. High levels of disease severity caused significant reductions in yield with losses between >40% and 80%. The causal pathogen was identified as Podosphaera xanthii. The presence of characteristic fibrosin bodies in the conidia, conidia produced in chains on the conidiophore and conidiophore foot-cell size and shape were diagnostic for P. xanthii. Significant levels of fungicide resistance to the most frequently used flusilazole, myclobutanil, propiconazole and benomyl was detected in P. xanthii populations on Kabocha squash. EC50 values were >60 times the recommended rates of use. Resistant factors were 5 x 106 and 2 x 106 for flusilazole and myclobutanil, respectively. P. xanthii showed significant levels of cross-resistance to these fungicides. The results of this study indicate that current fungicide practice for powdery mildew on Kabocha squash is no longer effective and should be discontinued due to the significant levels of fungicide resistance in the P. xanthii population. The recommendation is for future use of environmentally safe and less harsh biocompatible products for disease management.

Abstract : In this study, the drying of pumpkin puree (Cucurbita maxima Duch. X Cucurbita moschata Duch. Var. 'Tetsukabuto') by foam-mat drying (FM) and by convection (CO) at 45 and 65 ° C was performed as a form of this vegetable. Preliminary to FM drying, the foam was evaluated by density measurements and the glycerol monostearate (1%) was selected as foaming agent. The kinetics of FM and CO drying presented a classic behavior of drying curves with a constant and decreasing rate period. The lower drying time were attributed to the increase of the drying air temperature and to the foam-mat drying method, and FM65 was the condition that required less time (~ 60 min) to reach the final humidity = 15% required by the flour legislation. The highest rates observed at higher temperature and FM drying and lower critical humidity values. In the drying kinetics Page was the model with best fit on the experimental data with R²> 0.99 and lower values of DMQ and X² in relation to the Lewis and Henderson and Pabis models. The technological properties of flours FM45, FM65, CO45 and CO65 was evaluated and its presented good results for water retention capacity and solubility index. The study showed the adsorption isotherms (25 ° C) increased Xeq in the increase of Aw, and higher Xeq values was observed in the CO45 and CO65 flours. The isotherms were type III and the BET model presented values of p <0.05 for the water values of the monolayer and it chosen to predict the isotherms of the drying conditions. Regarding color (CIELab scale), all the flours intensified the yellow and red colors and were lighter than the fresh puree. Among the flours obtained, the FM45 flour had the highest total carotenoid content. In the compression tests, in water at 25 and 40 ° C, the FM45 flour presents texture similar to the control (fresh purée) with up to 90 % of the CRA added in terms of firmness and adhesiveness. Color analysis on rehydration indicates that the addition of water > 40 % of the CRA from the FM45 flour has the same values of darkening index than the control.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Modern subjectivity is difficult to capture in art’s sensuous media. Painting is the first of Hegel’s individual arts to attempt this challenge. Christian painting especially, Hegel claims, is able to depict spirit’s disappearance into a human’s sense of interiority. It does so by cancelling sculpture’s third dimension and by evoking particularly subjective emotions such as love and bliss. Hegel sides with those who define painting’s essence as based in color rather than drawing. He praises masters of color such as Titian and Correggio as well as Dutch genre painting and still lifes for achieving maximum effect. This chapter also considers ways Hegel’s theory of painting can be extended to contemporary, non-representational painting.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the one of the most contradictory and controversial portraits of A.M. Gorky who in 1927 set to the Dutch self-taught artist Christian Victor Kragballe Haagen-Müller (1894–1959). It became clear from letter of the artist’s wife that in 1927 her husband and she came to Italy for the purpose of painting a portrait of the proletarian writer, the Revolution Stormy Petrel, and at the day of the writer’s 60th anniversary two identical color lithographs of its sketches were presented to A.M. Gorky. “Many people made my portraits all of which were not good”, — the writer shared his impressions with P.D. Korin, as if remembering his short-term acquaintance with the Dutch artist. Gorky’s appraisal of Haagen-Müller’s work became an axiomatic quotation: “The explanations on the subject why Gorky became so pale are to be required from the artist!” — and implies the evident rejection of the artistic interpretation of the writer’s image. Which circumstances brought to such peremptory comments of the portrait? Was it inactivity, apathy and restraint of A.M. Gorky, even in the portrait space, still implying him, the literary and public isolation provoked by the fascists? Or was it the influence of the fashionable tendencies in painting like cubism which caused the persistent rejection of the realist writer? Or maybe, the proletarian writer understood the portrait as a political contract, since the fascism rapidly conquering the world with its breaking of the usual human reality, was denounced by the writer as “the denial of the culture and the sermon of the war”?

Abstract:
Though famous as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens have yet to be securely located. Undaunted, many artists, architects, and scholars have suggested reconstructions with the help of descriptions in Greco-Roman literature, such as the illustration by the Dutch artist Maerten van Heemskerck. In his depiction, the gardens are very similar in appearance to the so-called Domus Severiana, one part of the imperial palace in Rome along the Circus Maximus, which clearly inspired van Heemskerck’s reconstruction. The idea of a flourishing artificial garden, rich with water, situated within a metropolis simmering in the desert heat has proven fascinating, not only in recent times but already in antiquity, when it had an enduring influence on both landscape architecture and on Roman palace architecture. The main floor of the Domus Aurea, and subsequently also of the palaces on the Palatine, stood atop high substructures and thus dominated the surrounding city while offering those within a privileged view. Integrating a variety of water installations into these large platforms increased the sense of an artificial landscape in the form of a “hanging garden.” Thus, vague and often fantastic ideas like those about the design of the Hanging Garden of Babylon inspired Roman builders and their architects and led the art of building Roman villas and imperial palaces to new heights.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Netherlands, the individual risk and societal risk are used in efforts to reduce the number of people exposed to the effect of an accident at an establishment with dangerous substances. To facilitate the societal risk planning policy an investigation was carried out for the Dutch SEVESO establishments to investigate the possibility of determining a generic uniform population density for the zone between the individual risk contours of 10−5 and 10−6 per year. The indicative limit for the societal risk at this density was not to be exceeded. Also there was to be enough space left for a significantly higher population density outside the individual risk contour of 10−6 per year. The RORISC methodology and the actual data for the 124 Dutch SEVESO establishments were used to determine the generic uniform population density. Based on the data available it can be concluded that the maximum allowed uniform population density in the zone between the individual risk contours of 10−5 and 10−6 per year is lower than one person per hectare. At this density there is no space left for a higher population density outside the individual risk contour of 10−6 per year. For uniform population densities the relative contribution to the societal risk has been found significant up to the individual risk contour of 10−7 per year.

Abstract:
Sustainable building will be the major guiding principle for renewal of building and spatial planning practice. Kropman being one of the major Dutch building services contractors is aware of this trend. It is because of this rowing awareness of sustainability that the company puts effort towards knowledge transfer and research with the Dutch knowledge and research institutes. The principles of sustainable building within the IFD (Industrial Flexible Dismountable) concept are applied in the planning of a new building for the Kropman Utrecht department. Aim was an integrated approach within the design process to reach a maximum level of integration between building elements and climate conditioning elements. A newly developed methodology for structuring and documenting integral design processes enables verification and reproduction of decisions made during designing. Its conscious use by professionals results in iteration cycles within and between their own domains. The gradual emergence of a design language that helps structuring design tasks and solutions further stimulates the multidisciplinary exchange of ideas and concepts. This approach of structuring tasks and solutions is tested within a professional context of a building design project. Investigated is if the approach improves and supports the building design process. Besides its added value for building design process, the integral design methodology directly stimulates application of sustainable energy in the built environment.

Abstract:
To limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C in 2100 compared to mid nineteenth century, net post 2015 emissions should amount maximum 200 Gigaton Carbon (GTC) or 734 GT CO2 emissions [Millar, 2017]. Annual world CO2 emission rate was 36.2GT, and CO2_eq (the combined impact of all emissions on global warming, translated to the equivalent impact of CO2 emissions) emission rate was 49 GT in 2016, [Carbonatlas, 2017]. Currently only 685 GT CO2 emission quota is left, or 14 years of emitting at the current emission rate. Estimates vary widely: IPCC thinks we only have 485 GT CO2 emission quota left, while the most pessimistic estimates talk about only 200 GT CO2. With this in mind, the ambition of the Dutch Operational Energy Strategy [Schulten 2017] to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels (and hence CO2 emissions) by 20 % in 2030, is not sufficient to meet the objectives of the Treaty of Paris. We have to choose whether to keep this ambition, defining much stricter ambitions, or invest differently to keep global warming within acceptable limits. This paper discusses CO2 emissions and their distribution both over different sectors and geographical, worldwide. Next the paper discusses the options we have on short and medium term to reduce emissions, and their impact on emission reduction.

Abstract:
In 1992 a GBS (Gravity Based Structure) was placed in the F3 block in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Gabion mattresses around the GBS were applied to prevent scour. The potential scour and the required dimensions of the gabion mattresses were determined before the installation in small-scale physical model tests. After the installation of the GBS, annual surveys have been carried out to provide information about the scour development around the GBS and the status of the protection system. This paper presents field observations of local scour development around the F3 GBS platform and an evaluation of the performance of the scour protection system. The objectives were to assess the maximum scour around the GBS and to determine a cost-effective survey strategy. To assess the maximum scour around the GBS, metocean conditions for the F3 GBS location were hindcasted for the period between the platform installation and the latest survey. The observed scour depths were analysed and compared with predictions both from the model tests and from existing empirical formulas. The results showed that the predicted scour depths based on the model tests agree reasonably well with the field observations. The empirical formulas give larger scour depths than the surveys. Based on the field observations in combination with predictions of the models, the maximum scour depths under the design extreme environmental conditions have been determined. To determine a cost effective survey strategy, the behaviour and performance of the gabion mattresses were evaluated based on the annual surveys and video inspections. It was concluded that the protection system has functioned well and no damage was observed. On the basis of the maximum expected scour and the performance of the gabion mattresses, it was considered that the survey frequency may be reduced. Surveys and inspections may be carried out every three years instead of every year, and after a severe storm.

Full text
Abstract:
It is very well-known that fracture toughness depends on loading rate. Higher strain rates can shift the ductile to brittle transition curve to higher temperatures, resulting in a more brittle structure at the same temperature. However, there is little effort to relate the testing rate to the loading rate within the offshore and maritime industry. For example, BS 7448-1 requires that the stress intensity factor loading rate be 0.5 MPa√m/s to 3.0 MPa√m/s. The loading rates of BS 7448-1 are very far away from the vibrational modes of the specimen, so these limitations are not necessary in order to assure a quasi-static test. In comparison, SSC 275 indicates that normal ship loading rates can be of the order of 220–440MPa√m/s. The results of SSC 275 are consistent with results obtained from a Dutch offshore equipment supplier, who indicates a time to maximum loading of 0.25–1.3 seconds. In general, a conservative loading scenario for the maritime and offshore industry is on the order of 200 times faster than the loading rate that is recommended by BS 7448-1. Testing at the standard rate has the consequence of artificially lowering the ductile to brittle transition temperature by 8–35°C in comparison to a real loading scenario, thus possibly giving a false impression of safety. This means that a CTOD measured as 0.2 mm for static testing conditions could be 0.08–0.15 mm for actual loading. The analysis is shown to be consistent with CTOD test data on a Quenched and Tempered (QT) and a Thermo-Mechanically Controlled Processed (TMCP) S690 grade steel.

Abstract:
Centrica Energy (formerly Venture) selected a self installing and re-usable platform concept (SIP) to develop their F3FA gas field in the Northern Part of the Dutch sector of the North Sea. On 6 February 2009 and following an initial FEED study, the contract was awarded to Heerema Fabrication Group (Main Contractor and Fabricator), in partnership with Iv-Oil & Gas (Designer and Procurer of process equipment) and SPT Offshore (Installation Contractor and Foundation Designer). The platform weighed in total 8,800 ton, including a 4,000 ton deck and 4,800 ton substructure including the suction pile foundation. The water depth at the F3FA site is 41m and the bottom of the cellar deck is located at 20m above LAT. The platform has an overall dimension of 63m × 45m footprint and protrudes some 90m above the seabed (excluding vent stack). The platform concept consists basically of a deck of 5 levels supported by 4 unbraced legs (3.25m outside diameter × 77m long) and founded on 4 huge suction piles (15m outside diameter × 13m deep). The platform is transported and installed using a large flat top barge (BOA 35 measuring 124m long × 31.5m wide × 8m high) and 3 tug boats (75, 90 and 183 ton bollard pull) for the tow from HFG’s yard in Vlissingen to the F3FA site in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The leg lowering and deck lifting was achieved using 12× 900 ton strand jacks. The suction pile foundation was installed using 4× suction pumps. During the detailed design stage of the project, the concept design was subject to several elementary changes in the structural design. This had to do with the severe environment, the increased deck weight and water depth compared to the earlier utilisation of the concept. Fatigue and transport and installation issues had a significant impact on several key structural design elements. This complicated the deck-leg connections and several members in the truss deck. The deck leg connection was amended from a simple clamp connection in to a superbolt and sleeve connection at the top deck and a clamped and grouted connection at the cellar deck. In order to improve the stiffness of the legs, leg stiffening frames were placed on top of the suction piles. Due to the limited and slow roll & pitch response of the platform whilst on the BOA barge during tow, high seafastening forces were predicted. These high seafastening forces were transferred in to the barge using pinned seafastening arms. Water depth limitations and the additional leg stiffening frames necessitated to use a fairly high grillage structure of 6.5m high. All these items changed the deck construction towards a method obstructing completion of non-structural disciplines and changed the inshore mating operation of the substructure with that topside towards a complex lifting and fitting campaign. Despite these elementary design changes and some rigorous changes in the planning of the various activities, the contract schedule was achieved in time. The above efforts had an obvious effect on the managerial issues towards the project. It required a doubling of the manning levels and engineering issues of in some cases R&D nature. Despite all these challenges and complications, the platform left Vlissingen well ahead of time, on 18 August 2010, to set sail for the F3FA site. Upon arrival in the field, the weather deteriorated severely and the tow was forced to seek shelter in Rotterdam. Just before arrival in Rotterdam severe waves were encountered up to 6–7m maximum. Upon inspection in Rotterdam, the design proved to be resilient as no signs of damage were observed. Following 10 days waiting on weather the platform was towed to the field for the second time. Installation and lifting the deck to the top elevation was achieved within a record time of 2 days and 4 hours. Thereafter the platform hook-up team continued to work on the platform including completing the deck leg connections, such as installation of superbolts at the top deck level and clamp shells, rubber pads and grout at the cellar deck level. Further hook-up work consisted of hooking up the life support systems before arrival of the drill rig on 14th October 2010. The drilling of the first well was completed early January 2011 and first gas was introduced in to the pipeline system since week 4 of 2011.
