Abstract:
The sociocultural forms of accra, whose population is now an estimated 2.5 million people, grew form interactions with Europeans from the fifteenth century onward. By the end of the seventeenth century, there were three major European trading outposts on the coast—Ussher Fort (Dutch), James Fort (British), and Christiansborg Castle (Danish). Each European post imparted a particular character to its neighborhood and, more importantly, triggered specific dynamics of social struggle both between the locals and the Europeans and within each local group. Traces of the European influence can also be discerned in some of the street names—Bannerman Road, Hansen Road, Bruce Road, Lokko Road, Rev Richter Road, Joel Sonne Street—which evoke the Euro-African families that formed the earliest local elites. The postmodern maxims that reality is a product of language and that language is essentially unstable and contradictory are by now standard views in critical theory. But I sometimes wonder what conclusion the postmodernists would have come to if for their reflections they had taken not the history of Western philosophy but rather the evolution of the polyglot and hybrid forms of language, ideas, society, and culture that are abundant in the non-Western societies that make up the bulk of the world's population. Accra might have provided a rich site for such reflections.

Abstract:
Although haploids were successfully produced via irradiated pollen technique and anther culture in Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata, the haploidization efficiency is still low due to genotype dependence. Thus, as an alternative technique, the efficacy of the ovule culture was investigated. Ovules were extracted at different flowering time and then cultured on a solid MS medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), benzylaminopurine (BAP), thidiazuron (TDZ), and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to induce callogenesis and plant regeneration. The gynogenic response was influenced by the combination of plant growth regulators, genotype and culture time. The medium containing of 4.0 mg/l BAP + 0.05 mg/l NAA + 0.1 mg/l TDZ provided the highest response at anthesis time. Plantlets were rooted and elongated on a solid MS medium supplemented with 0.01 mg/l indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) + 1.0 mg/l BAP. The ploidy observations of 122 plants revealed that 70 plants were haploid, 46 plants were diploid and the others were mixoploid.

Abstract:
Hybrid incompatibility and F1 hybrid dysgenesis in the interspecific hybridization between pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) and winter squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) have been previously noted. For this reason, it is difficult to obtain F2 generations due to F1 sterility. However, back-crossing and add-crossing can be utilized to overcome these incompatibility barriers in interspecific hybridization. To date, few studies have focused on parental selection, the back-crossing process, and offspring characteristics related to interspecific hybridization. Hence, we explored the F1 seed acquisition rate, plant characteristics, and F2 generation fertility after interspecific back-crossing and add-crossing hybridization of C. moschata and C. maxima. Moreover, as a female parent, X-1 (C. moschata) yielded F1 seeds when crossed with winter squash (C. maxima) 10-04-3, 10-37, or 10-05-2. BC1F1 seeds and plants could be obtained with winter squash (C. maxima) as the recurrent parent. Some healthy F2 seeds and plants were obtained from the interspecific hybrids, including ZJ-13, ZJ-8, and ZJ-11. Further fruit nutrition quality analysis showed that the starch, polysaccharide, cellulose, and dry material contents of ZJ-7 and ZJ-8 were significantly higher than those of the parent pumpkin and winter squash lines. The bioflavonoid content of ZJ-8 was lower than that of its parents, and its soluble protein was at the median value. Meanwhile, the bioflavonoid content of ZJ-1 was lower than that of its parents, but its soluble protein was significantly higher. These results suggest that back-crossing and multi-crossing can overcome the barriers to interspecific crossing of C. moschata × C. maxima. Some interspecific hybrid fruits had nutritional contents much higher than those of their parent lines. Additionally, X-1 (C. maxima) was found to act as a bridge species in interspecific hybridization. Collectively, in this study, the barriers to interspecific hybridization of C. moschata × C. maxima were addressed through crossing methods and choice of parents, and the obtained results are expected to provide novel support for interspecific hybrid breeding between C. moschata and C. maxima.

Abstract:
Soil salinization due to climate change and intensive use of water and soil is increasing exponentially. Cucurbitaceae species are cultivated worldwide and the identification of salinity tolerant genotypes to be used as rootstock or scion for securing yield stability in salt affected agricultural areas is a research priority. In the present greenhouse study, we assessed the response to salinity (0 mM a non-salt control and 150 mM NaCl dissolved in the nutrient solution) in the seedlings of 30 genotypes of cucurbits grown in a floating hydroponic system. The species tested included 16 genotypes of Cucumis melo L. (CM1-16), 6 Citrullus vulgaris Schrad. (CV1-6), 2 interspecific hybrids of Cucurbita maxima Duch. × Cucurbita moschata Duch. (CMM-R1 and 2), 4 bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl. (LS1-4)), 1 Cucurbita moschata Duch. (CMO51-17), and 1 luffa (Luffa cylindrica Mill. (LC1)) species. Results highlighted different morphological and physiological traits between the species and genotypes and a different response to salt stress. We identified C. maxima × C.moscata interspecific hybrid CMM-R2, melon genotypes CM6, CM7, CM10, and CM16 together with watermelon genotypes CV2 and CV6 and bottle gourd LS4 as salt tolerant genotypes and possible candidates as salt resistant rootstock to be introduced in grafting programs.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to measure honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) impact on seed set, fruit set, and yield of jack-o-lantern (Cucurbita pepo L.), large-sized (C. maxima Duch.), and processing pumpkins (C. moschata Duch. ex Poir.) under field conditions. There were sufficient natural pollinators [including bumblebees (Bombus spp.), carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.), honey bees, and squash bees (Peponapis pruinosa Say)] provided under field conditions to induce fruit set of jack-o-lantern pumpkins as fruit number obtained per hectare was not affected by the addition of a honey bee colony. However, the addition of honey bees did increase fruit number per hectare of the C. moschata and C. maxima cultivars evaluated. Honey bee pollination resulted in larger-sized fruit, increasing individual fruit size of all but small-sized pumpkins (<0.5 kg). Individual pumpkin fruit weights of the Cucurbita pepo, C. moschata, and C. maxima cultivars evaluated increased by about, 26%, 70%, and 78%, respectively, when honey bee colonies were included. Natural pollination was insufficient to stimulate maximum fruit size development and seed number and seed weight per fruit. Although pumpkin fruit set will occur with natural pollinators, the addition of honey bee colonies will ensure the presence of pollinators to maximize fruit size. Since pumpkins are generally sold on a weight basis, growers may generate greater revenues with the addition of honey bee colonies in pumpkin fields.

Abstract:
Interspecific hybrids can be produced from certain cross combinations of Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata. These hybrids have been used extensively as rootstocks for melon and watermelon grafting, but only occasionally for fresh market use. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of interspecific hybrids for use in pie processing in terms of morphological traits related to productivity. We used a bush-processing inbred line of C. maxima, NH65, as the female parent and two vining-processing cultivars of C. moschata, Long Island Cheese (LIC) and Dickinson Field (DF) as pollen parents to produce two interspecific hybrids with large orange fruit, potentially suitable for processing. A greenhouse study was conducted to compare internode lengths, main stem diameters, flowering patterns, and leaf area at first appearance of female flowers in NH65, LIC, DF, and two interspecific hybrids, NH65xLIC and NH65xDF. Plants were grown in 8.7 L nursery pots, watered and fertigated with drip tubing, and trellised to a single main stem. In LIC and DF, internode lengths increased rapidly beyond the fourth node before reaching a maximum by node 12. Internodes in NH65 did not exceed 3 cm until node 15, and average lengths never exceeded 4 cm. In interspecific hybrids, internode lengths mimicked bush plants for 6 or 7 internodes, remaining below 3 cm, but then increased rapidly to lengths approaching that of the vining cultivars after internode 10. Staminate flowers were more abundant than pistillate flowers in NH65, LIC and DF; whereas the interspecies hybrids produced primarily pistillate flowers. In NH65xLIC, the first pistillate flowers appeared on nodes 9–11, on average 38.3 days after transplanting (DAT), and in NH65xDF, on nodes 9–17, 42.3 DAT. First pistillate flowers in NH65 occurred on nodes 9–11, 34.3 DAT, compared with nodes 9–13, 39.3 DAT and nodes 17–21, 50.0 DAT, respectively, for LIC and DF. A field study was conducted for comparing flowering patterns and growth habits in NH65xLIC, NH65xDF, DF, LIC, NH65, and ‘Golden Delicious’ (GD), a popular C. maxima processing winter squash. Stem length was short and petioles highly elongated in the two interspecific hybrids until about 34 DAT, such that plants exhibited a uniform, compact phenotype similar to NH65. Subsequently, stems elongated rapidly, with lengths approaching and occasional exceeding those in vine cultivars. In the two vining C. moschata cultivars, LIC and DF, 4–6 laterals developed near the base of plants, usually consisting of 12–30 nodes. NH65xLIC produced mostly short laterals (4–15 nodes) interspersed along much of the main stem, whereas NH65xDF produced numerous lateral branches, mostly ranging from 11 to 30 nodes long, between the base and about the halfway point along the main stem. Mature leaves were about twice as large in the two interspecific hybrids as in DF and GD; this together with differences in early growth habit and branching patterns contributed to a much faster leaf canopy cover in the interspecific hybrids in comparison with the vining cultigens.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Reduced forest or deforestation is widespread in East Aceh Regency for plantation, agriculture and settlement purposes. Forests in Sumatra, including in East Aceh Regency are Sumatran Elephant habitat (Elephas maximus sumatranus). However, encroachment resulted in this fauna threatened sustainability, whereas Sumatran elephants are endangered species protected by law both since Dutch colonialism, post-independence, and international regulations, and Sumatran elephants have an vital ecosystem role but are seen as a nuisance to the local economy in East Aceh Regency, so it is not electrocuted, killed and abused. This paper reviews the deforestation of the Sumatran Elephant in East Aceh Regency. The results of the study show that elephant roaming areas intersect with deforestation that occurred in East Aceh Regency. As an alternative local economy, there is still the potential of ecotourism with the mascot of the Sumatran elephant. Thus the Sumatran elephant is still able to be sustainable, and the forest as habitat is maintained.

Abstract:
Abstract A germination test of seven Cucurbita entries in a dark growth chamber indicated no effects of trifluralin on germination. Increasing the plant population/pot of butternut type squash (C. moschata Poir, cv. Ponca) did not improve trifluralin tolerance. A factorial arrangement of three treatments (six Cucurbita entries × five trifluralin doses × three herbicide incorporation zone placements in pots) with a randomized complete block design was used in two greenhouse experiments. The incorporation zone treatments included surface layering (above seed), subsurface layering (below seed), and full-pot incorporation of the herbicide dose. The layering treatments increased concentration (ppm) of the herbicide due to the concentrated dose in a small volume of sand medium (200 vs. 500 g quartz sand). Total plant dry weight differences were detected between zoning treatments. After an initial stimulating effect, plant dry weight decreased over the dose range. The C. maxima Duch, PI 182202, and C. pepo L., PI 234252, showed the highest tolerance. Adventitious roots developed and senescence of the primary root occurred above the subsurface treated layer that had been treated at high trifluralin concentrations. The root zone was the primary site of herbicide action. C. moschata, C. pepo, and C. maxima spp. (21 entries) were screened in two tests for tolerance to trifluralin over a range of 0 to 0.4 ppm incorporated in quartz sand. Entry, herbicide dose, and entry × dose interaction effects were significant. C. maxima PI lines 368567 and 179264 exhibited the highest tolerance regardless of dose. Chemical name used: α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N, N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin).

Abstract:
Cucurbita spp. is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world. They are characterized by great polymorphism according plants and fruits traits. The fruits are consumed in different ways as boiled, baked, dried or processed in puree and juice. The aim of the study was to assess variation of fruit sensory, chemical and morphological characteristics of Cucurbita genotypes in order to find appropriate parental components for the future high quality breeding programme. During 2-year period nine winter squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) and three pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) genotypes originating from different geographical regions were tested on their morphological characters, basic chemical components and sensory profile. Cluster analysis and Principle component analysis were applied in order to identify similarities of different genotypes. According to the fruit characteristics and plant habitus significant differences were recorded. Considerable variation in the content of dry matter, ascorbic acid, total sugars, total pigments, beta-carotene and sensory assessment of the boiled fruits was established. Accession Moskatna carotina had the best flavour and chemical composition. The studied Cucurbita genotypes are a good basis for performing a breeding program to improve the sensory quality of fruits and increase basic chemical components especially those with antioxidant effect.

In the context of tremendous changes in the world community, one of the main factors is introduction of new plant varieties for reliable development of agriculture. To improve the quality of adaptive capabilities of thermophilic pumpkin crops in the Middle Urals, grafting on resistant stocks can be used. The studies were carried out in 2018-2020 on protected ground, at Udmurt Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the city of Izhevsk. The soil is organo-mineral, humus content is 5.0 %, pH - 5.8. The total plot area is 24 m2, the record area is 16 m2. The repetition was fourfold, the placement of the plots was randomized. The experiment is one-factor. Experimental variants are: 1. Momordica charantia L. without grafting (control), stocks - 2. Cucurbita pepo L., 3. Cucurbita maxima Duch., 4. Cucurbita moschata Duch., 5. Cucurbita ficifolia Bouche., 6. Lagenaria siceraria Molina , Standl. This work presents the stages of the study on compatibility of Momordica charantia when it was grafted onto various types of stocks, based on the analysis of the characteristics of growth and development, survival and productivity of plants. Conclusions were made about the prospects of growing Momordica charantia indoors. The data obtained indicate a high survival rate of Momordica charantia - over 72 % of the studied stocks. At the same time, it should be noted that the highest survival rate among grafts had Cucurbita maxima variant. The dry matter and total sugar content in the fruits of Momordica charantia increased in all variants with grafting (to 26.8 % by dry matter and to 16.2 % by total sugar, respectively) compared to the control, and the accumulation of nitrates was maximum - 384.6 mg / kg in the variant of grafting on Lagenaria siceraria, while there was no excess of MAC.

Plant Sci. 94: 293–302. dm1, a dwarf mutant from Cucurbita maxima (Duch. ex Lam) by natural mutation, showed distinct dwarf phenotypes such as shorter vines and fewer and shorter internodes. Genetic analysis indicated that the dm1 mutation was recessive, and the dwarfing character was controlled by a single locus. DNA-AFLP analysis showed that a fragment (MCAG/ETT) was linked with the dwarfing character of dm1 and that the fragment contained 152 base pairs (bp). It was investigated in F2 populations of dm1 and vine plants, and the genetic distance between the MCAG/ETT fragment and dwarf gene in dm1 was 11.2 cM, calculated by JoinMap 3.0 software. In addition, the result of cDNA-AFLP analysis showed that there were 52 differential transcript derived fragments (TDFs) found between dm1 and vine plants. Only four TDFs, A16T12, A16T9, A6T14 and A6T16, were expressed stably and specifically in dm1 plants in subsequent investigation. The four fragments share 71, 79, 87 and 79% nucleic acid sequence similarity with the complete coding sequence of Arabidopsis thaliana histidine kinase 3 (AHK3) mRNA, nucleic acid sequence of Vitis vinifera dihydroflavonol-4-reductase-like (DFRL), nucleic acid sequence of Glycine max histone-lysine N-methyltransferase ATX4-like and nucleic acid sequence of Arabidopsis thaliana histidinol dehydrogenase (HDH), respectively. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that AHK3, DFRL and HDH were respectively related to Cytokinin signaling, indole acetic acid signaling and Ni accumulation, which played important roles in plant growth, so the expression of the four TDFs may contribute to form dwarfism in dm1.

Abstract:
Perimeter trap cropping (PTC) uses an attractive crop to concentrate pests at borders and reduce pesticide use while maintaining yield. A possible disadvantage of PTC could be pollen flow between border and main crops that are not interfertile. The effects of pollen composition and amount on seed and fruit production were investigated between a main crop species, butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata Duch. ex Poir), and a PTC species, blue hubbard (C. maxima Duch.). Butternut squash plants were hand pollinated in the greenhouse with three pollen composition treatments crossed with four pollen amounts. Pure butternut squash pollen and mixed pollen produced more seeds per fruit and heavier seeds than pure blue hubbard pollen, revealing some incompatibility between butternut and blue hubbard. Saturating pollen amounts produced up to six times more seeds than lower pollen amounts. Pollen composition did not influence fruit set or fruit weight, which are of central importance for crop yield. This study suggests that pollen flow between blue hubbard borders and butternut squash should not interfere with crop production as long as sufficient conspecific pollen is deposited on stigmas.

Abstract:
In the present study, carotenoid concentrations and profiles of carotenoids were determined at harvest and during storage in fruit of several cultigens of winter squash, including several New Hampshire (NH) breeding lines, the cultivars Waltham Butternut and Puritan Butternut in Cucurbita moschata (Duch.), and the hybrid cultivars Sunshine, Eclipse, Space Station, and Thunder in Cucurbita maxima (Duch.). Cultigens were grown at research farms in either Madbury or Durham, NH, in 2007, 2008, and 2009, and fruit were harvested at either 40 or 60 days after pollination (DAP), and stored for 0, 30, or 60 days at 14 °C before sampling. Total carotenoid concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically and carotenoid profiles were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Carotenoid concentrations in fruit samples of C. maxima cultigens harvested at 60 DAP ranged from 146 to 320 μg·g−1 fresh weight (FW), compared with concentrations of 274 to 623 μg·g−1 FW after storage for 60 days. Carotenoid concentrations were lower among C. moschata cultigens, ranging from 42 to 145 μg·g−1 FW at 60 DAP, and from 84 to 239 μg·g−1 FW after 60-day storage. The nutritionally important carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene, comprised 41% to 63% of the total carotenoid profile in the C. maxima kabocha hybrids; whereas, the carotenoids neoxanthin and flavoxanthin comprised 37% to 59%. β-Carotene and lutein were the major nutritionally beneficial carotenoids identified in ‘Waltham Butternut’ and three inbred lines of C. moschata, along with much smaller concentrations of α-carotene. Neoxanthin and violaxanthin comprised between 14% and 29% of the total carotenoid profiles among the four cultigens analyzed. In the popular cultivar Waltham Butternut, the β-carotene concentration was 17.3 μg·g−1 FW at 60 DAP, but increased to a maximum of 57.8 μg·g−1 FW after storage for 30 days; whereas, lutein concentrations increased from 27.3 μg·g−1 FW at 60 DAP to 44.6 μg·g−1 FW after 60-day storage. In Sunshine, a popular kabocha cultivar, β-carotene increased from 26.0 μg·g−1 FW at 60 DAP to 104 μg·g−1 FW after 60-day storage. Lutein + zeaxanthin concentrations in ‘Sunshine’ were 58.8 μg·g−1 FW at 60 DAP, but increased only to 71.8 μg·g−1 FW after 60-day storage. Total carotenoid concentrations and carotenoid profiles in ‘Sunshine’ over three growing seasons, and in ‘Waltham Butternut’, ‘NH.Mo421’, and ‘NH.Mo851’ over two growing seasons, were similar.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the influence of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (Rhizophagus irregularis) fungi inoculation (M) on the growth ofCucurbita maximaand as a buffer against phytoextraction of selected heavy metals (HM) (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd and Pb) from a soil contaminated with crude oil (C). The experiment was set up using four soil treatments, each with three replicates C+ M-, C+ M+, C-M+ and C-M- (control without oil and inoculum). The shoot length, petiole length, number of nodes, leaf area and percentage germination ofC. maximawere significantly (p=0.05) reduced in uninoculated crude oil treatment (C+ M-), unpolluted mycorrhizal inoculated treatments (C-M+) showed remarkable response in growth parameters above the control (C-M-), while the polluted and inoculated treatment (C+ M+) showed significant (p=0.05) increase in growth parameters when compared to the polluted uninoculated treatment (C+ M-). Heavy metals analysis revealed a significant (p=0.05) difference in the heavy metal accumulation ofC. maxima. The heavy metals analyzed in this study are present thus inC. maxima; Zn>Cu>Cr>Pb>Cd. Crude oil polluted uninoculated treatment (C+ M-) recorded the highest concentrations of heavy metals than crude oil polluted inoculated (R. irregularis) treatment (C+ M+). Mycorrhizal inoculated unpolluted treatment (C-M+) and unpolluted uninoculated treatment (C-M-) indicated the lowest heavy metal concentrations. Inoculation withR. irregularissignificantly (p=0.05) reduced heavy metals uptake byC. maximaas observed in this study. Also, the negative effect of crude oil on AMF root colonization ofC. maximabyR. irregulariswas observed in polluted and inoculated treatment. HM often accumulate in the top layer of soil, therefore, are available for uptake by plants via roots, which is a major entry point of HM that ultimately affects different physiological processes. AM fungi can impinge on the chemical properties of heavy metals in the soil, their absorption by the host plant, and their allocation to different plant parts, affecting plant growth and the bioremediation process, thus making the AM fungi a suitable buffer for mitigating heavy metal stress onC. maxima.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of seed priming techniques on germination characteristics of C. maxima Duch. cultivar (Beiguan). Treatments were combinations of 3 levels of priming (distilled water, NaCl and PEG6000) and non-priming (control) with 3 replications. Concentrations of NaCl solution were 50, 100, 150, 200 mmol•L-1, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 were 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, respectively. Seeds were primed using the above priming materials for 24 hours at 20°C in the dark, respectively. The results showed that different priming techniques could have various effects on germination of Beiguan seeds. Hydropriming (distilled water), NaCl priming and PEG6000 priming (10%) all improved the germination characteristics of Beiguan, compared to the control. NaCl priming was more effective than hydropriming and PEG6000 priming and was the most successful technique in this study. These findings indicated that seed priming techniques could accelerate germination process and were simple and cheap, we should propose these methods to farmers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Petro. Petro.

Abstract:
The effect crude oil pollution and amendment treatments using decomposed green manure (Calopogonium muconoidesDesvaux andAspilia africana(Person) C.D.Adams) on the growth and neutraceutical (minerals, proximate and vitamins A and C) ofCucurbita maximawere studied. Crude oil polluted soils were obtained by mixing thoroughly 10 kg of sandy-loam soil with 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 ml of crude oil, 0 ml served as control. The amendment treatment with green manure ofC. muconoidesandA. africanawas carried out by adding the different levels of crude oil polluted soils (10 – 50 ml) with 4 kg of the compost manure. The experimental work was carried out in the green house using plastic buckets. Measurement of selected growth parameters such as percentage germination, vine length, leaf area, internode length, leaf number and petiole length was carried out after nine (9) weeks. The results indicated that crude oil pollution significantly (p=0.05) reduced the growth parameters ofC. maxima. Mineral content, proximate composition and vitamin A and C contents ofC. maximaalso showed pronounced reduction with increase in crude oil concentration. The addition of amendment treatment with green manure ofC. muconoidesandA. africanato ameliorate the impeding condition in the crude oil polluted soil significantly (p=0.05) improved the growth parameters and neutraceutical composition ofC. maximawhen compared to the pollution treatment. This study revealed that crude oil pollution negatively affected the growth and neutraceutical composition and generally the productivity ofC. maxima. From this study, it is evident thatC. muconoidesandA. africanaenhanced the growth and quality ofC. maxima.Therefore,C. muconoidesandA. africanashould be used for effective and efficient bioremediation practices.
