English Abstract: The notion of 'source' poses considerable problems for the study of silent film music. On the one hand, from a purely historical point of view, it is worth remembering that most of the music for the films of the silent era no longer exists. On the other hand, a vast repertoire of stock photoplay music has come down to us from the silent era, as an example of specialised publishing in the field of film music. Collections such as Kinothek, Motion Picture Moods, Filmharmonie , and many others consisted of original pieces that were not associated with a specific film but were des

In the late nineteenth century, rubber became a precious commodity. Many companies were looking for opportunities to satisfy the market demand by investing in rubber plantations established mainly in colonized lands. In 1916, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, headquartered in the US in Akron, Ohio, acquired 20,000 acres in Dolok Merangir, Deli area, East Sumatra, Dutch East Indies (the region is now part of North Sumatra province, Indonesia), by concession of the Dutch East Indies and the local ruler of the Deli Sultanate. Abstract Languages differ in the way motion events are encoded. In satellite-framed languages, motion verbs typically encode manner, while in verb-framed languages, path. We investigated the ways in which satellite-framed Dutch and verb-framed Turkish co-determine one’s attention to motion events in early bilinguals. In an EEG oddball paradigm, Turkish–Dutch bilinguals (n = 25) and Dutch controls (n = 27) watched short video clips of motion events, followed by a still picture that matched the preceding video in four ways (oddball design: 10% full match, 10% manner match, 10% endpoint match, an

From elephants to ABBA fans, silicon to hormone, the following discussion uses a new research method to look at printed text, motion pictures and a teenage rebel icon. If by ‘print’ we mean a mechanically reproduced impression of a cultural symbol in a medium, then printing has been with us since before microdot security prints were painted onto cars, before voice prints, laser prints, network servers, record pressings, motion picture prints, photo prints, colour woodblock prints, before books, textile prints, and footprints. Introduction Indonesian cultural productions use the Indonesian War of Independence (1945-1949) as inspiration for the war’s remembrance in popular culture such as in films (Arps; Irawanto), music, and mobile games, while a special emphasis on wearing historical costumes is made during the anniversary of Indonesia’s declaration of independence. Nowhere is this clearer than in Indonesian historical re-enactment. Although Indonesia has seen a rise in historical re-enactment groups for the last couple of years, the absence of scholarly research on the topic reflects how Indonesian historical re-e

Introduction Explorations of the multimedia game format within cultural studies have been broadly approached from two perspectives: one -- the impact of technologies on user interaction particularly with regard to social implications, and the other -- human computer interactions within the framework of cybercultures. Another approach to understanding or speaking about games within cultural studies is to focus on the game experience as cultural practice -- as an activity or an event. In this article I wish to initiate an exploration of the aesthetics of player space as a distinctive element of

Abstract Music has been central to the history of film. This chapter charts that history through a global perspective, looking at the origins and development of musical accompaniment to motion pictures from the United States to South America, from Europe, Russia, and the Soviet Union to India, Japan, China, and numerous other countries in between. That history includes attention to the variety of forms that musical accompaniment to early film took from phonographic accompaniment to live performance, from improvisation to cue sheets to original film scores, and from a single musician to a symph
