The Dutch water companies have commissioned an ambitious 4 year research programme in pursuit of an impeccable drinking water quality, called Quality 21 (Quality for the 21st century). The Dutch approach has always been to safeguard drinking water quality from source to tap by excellent design, operation and research. This drinking water is generally distributed without a disinfectant residual. The Dutch consumers appreciate this concept and have a high confidence in the quality of tap water. The new research programme aims at providing the scientific foundation for future decisions on quality

Recently, scholars have suggested that to understand fully the nature of a dyadic relationship, greater attention must be directed to the network context. In this study we drew on emerging perspectives on inter-firm governance and networks to develop a theoretical framework to understand the successful governance of long-term buyer-supplier relationships. In order to test the research framework, we conducted a survey among 174 merchant distributors (buyers) and 67 growers (suppliers) in the Dutch potted plant and flower industry. In this paper we present an application of AI search techniques to a class of problems that arise in transportation systems analysis. Rather than adapting the time-space network formulation typically used in Operations Research, we propose a discrete dynamic network to represent a scheduled service network. In a discrete dynamic network, there are finite, discrete, predetermined possibilities for moving from one vertex to another. Visiting a vertex has a cost (possibly zero), which may depend both on how the vertex was reached and how it will be left.We describe the DYNET search algorithm for

This thesis discusses an algorithm and two heuristics for solving a particular network optimization problem: The node-disjoint paths problem. The goal of this optimization problem is to find two node-disjoint paths between a given origin-destination pair whose total cost is minimum. This problem is shown to be NP-Hard. Two heuristics are investigated in this thesis. The sequential shortest paths heuristic, is the faster of the two methods, but the quality of the solution may be sacrificed. On the other hand, the simultaneous shortest paths heuristic, which yields very good solutions, has highe

Computing the reliability of a network is a #P-complete problem, therefore estimation by means of simulation often becomes a favourable choice. In modern communication networks, link failure probabilities are usually small and hence network failures become rare events. This poses a challenge to estimate the network reliability. In this thesis we present different techniques for network reliability estimation. There are two main sampling techniques in reliability estimation: combinatorial and permutational sampling. Network Flow problems are prevalent in Operations Research, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering and Management Science. They constitute a class of problems that are frequently faced by real world applications, including transportation, telecommunications, production planning, etc. While many problems can be modeled as Network Flows, these problems can quickly become unwieldy in size and difficult to solve. One particularly large instance is the Min-Cost Multicommodity Network Flow problem. Due to the time-sensitive nature of the industry, faster algorithms are always desired: recent advan
