Abstract:
Abstract Duties to self are commonly considered as incoherent. If I owed a duty to myself, I could release myself from it at will which would be incoherent with it being a duty. Recent years have seen various attempts at defending duties to self against this argument. A common strategy entails that the self is divided. One part of the self owes a duty to another. I argue that understanding duties to self as being owed to a part of the self leads to problems because a person has interests that go beyond those of the single parts. Instead, I suggest that duties to self are owed by a local self (

Abstract In this paper, I appeal to the notion of practical identity in order to defend the possibility of synchronic duties to the self—that is, self-directed duties focused on one’s present self as opposed to one’s future self. While many dismiss the idea of self-directed duties, I show that a person may be morally required to act in ways that advance her present interests and autonomy by virtue of her occupying multiple practical identities at a single moment.

There is a historical emphasis on duties to self, or self-regarding duties, in nursing’s ethics heritage literature from the 1860s to 1965. Yet, as nursing education shifted to university settings and society and nursing moved away from a virtue-based ethics to a duty-based ethics, the emphasis on self-regarding duties was lost. In the 2001 revision of the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements, that emphasis is reclaimed and restored. The 2015 version of the Code further develops and expands the ethical obligation of duties to self. The aggregate

The present article is an attempt to clarify the Kantian conception of duties to the self and to defend them against common objections. Kant’s thesis that all duty rests on duties to the self is shown to follow from the autonomy of the human will; and the allegation that they are impossible because the agent could always release himself from such a duty turns out to be question-begging. There is no attempt to prove that there are such duties, but they are revealed to be an indispensable part of morality. Traditional attributes of moral commands, such as ‘categoricity’ or ‘overridingness’ make

The aim of this paper is to highlight specific features related to the performance of public duties by local self-governments, focusing on their autonomy. Hence, it is essential that the conceptual boundaries of such notions as ‘public duties’ and duties associated with ‘public services’ are established at the outset. The current lack of clarity contributes to the complexity of the issue, and this is further complicated by a lack of clear legal regulations which would explicitly define the acceptable way in which public duties assigned to local self-governments are to be implemented. The board of directors at a company usually comprises both executive and non-executive directors. Their role is to run and direct the company for its benefit since it is incapable of acting by itself. Where there is a separation of ownership and control it is recognised that there is a risk that those in control may use their power for self-interested means. Attention is often focused on the executive directors and how legal controls and governance mechanisms can reduce the possibility of self-interest in the performance of their functions. Cases in which share holders have made claims of fiduciary duty against directors since the law reforms of the 1960s and 1970s are examined. After presenting this historical backdrop, we then provide our definition of digital minimalism; we understand this as a virtue—a robust disposition to do what is morally required. This chapter lays out and then develops the “waivability objection,” which has throughout philosophy’s history been the most serious objection to duties to the self. The objection holds that a person who has a duty to herself will always be in a position to waive it, and a duty that a person can simply escape by waiving it is no duty at all. Some attempts to answer this objection, including Kant’s, are considered and rejected. The chapter concludes that this objection is formidable and that any account of duties to the self should be constructed in response to it.
