Abstract:
Indoor air microbial communities play significant roles on the increase in hospitals acquired infections globally. In view of the importance of indoor air bacterial quality in the transmission of nosocomial infections, a study was conducted to assess the air bacterial load and antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacteria from some hospitals in Dutse, Jigawa State. A total of 114 air samples were collected and analyzed using standard procedures from wards and units of Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse, General Hospital Dutse and Primary Health Care Centre Shuwarin. Settling platetechnique was employed and sampling was done twice daily (Morning and Afternoon). Aerobic mesophilic bacterial counts were conducted. Isolates were identified according to standard methods. The Medical Surgical Ward (MSW) revealed the highest airborne bacterial count (2.770x103 CFU/m3). General Hospital Dutse was found to have a higher indoor bacterial load than Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital and Primary Healthcare Centre Shuwarin. Airborne Gram positive cocci were the most frequently detected (100%) in all the indoor environments. Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli were the bacterial species identified in the study. It was observed that the bacterial isolates were more susceptible to gentimicin. The findings revealed the presence of five (5) methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus isolates (MRSA) 60% in Male Medical Ward (MMW), 20% in Female Medical Ward (FMW), and 20% in Post-natal Ward (PNW). In conclusion, 84.2% of the hospitals’ units were having aerobic mesophilic bacterial counts within the acceptable limits. It is recommended that disinfection of male, female and post-natal wards should be intensified.

Abstract:
Wind is a natural process through which air moves in mass from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. There is no doubt when not obstructed can damage several natural features and human-made structures beyond repairs. However, in an open landscape trees provide the most effective protection compared to other biological wind control measures. This study investigated household’s responses to the roles of trees as wind breaker in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria. The data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaires coupled with oral interview schedules. A total of five (5) wards namely: Chamo, Dundubus, Limawa, Kaci and Dutse were randomly selected based on the havoc caused by wind in the areas. Fifteen villages were randomly selected from five wards. Thirty (30) respondents were randomly selected from each of the chosen wards; thus, one hundred and fifty (150) respondents make up the sample size for this research while the data were subjected to descriptive statistics analysis. Multistage random sampling was used for this research. The results from this study showed that dominant tree (67%), deforestation (62%), fuel-wood (60%) and tree planting (60%) had the highest percentage. In conclusion, Dutse people are greatly depend on the use of fuel-wood for their domestic uses and also aware of mitigating methods. Therefore, enlighten of the people on the effect of deforestation and also alternative sources of biofuel must be provided in order to maintain ecological balance, and reduce high level of deforestation in the study areas.

Abstract:
Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a dangerous bacterial infection that attacks the lungs. It has long been documented that there is an increase circulating levels of free radicals and oxidative stress markers in TB subjects. Malnutrition and deficient antioxidant capabilities further complicate the patient’s situation. The aim of this study is to determine the serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in pulmonary tuberculosis patients and normal volunteers at Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria. The present study consists of one hundred and thirty-four (134) subjects, Ninety (90) among which are diagnosed TB patients and forty-four (44) apparently healthy controls attending Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse. Venous samples were collected from ninety consecutive, consenting PTB on drugs and those that have not started medications. MDA levels were analysed using the method of Nadigar et al (1986). The mean values of MDA in the 24 tuberculosis infected males who are yet to commence drug was 4.0±0.32, 2.8±0.53 in those that are on drugs and 2.0±0.23 in the male control subjects. It was 4.1±0.35, 2.9±0.29 and 1.9±0.32 in female that are TB infected and yet to commence drugs, those on drugs and the control subjects respectively. The total mean MDA value for those on tuberculosis drugs was 4.0±0.33, 2.8±0.46 for those that are yet to commence the treatment and 2.0±0.28 for the control subjects, the serum levels of SOD was found significantly lower (p<0.005) in PTB subjects on treatment compared to those without treatment and control subjects. Conclusively, the findings of the current study showed that pulmonary tuberculosis patients are predisposed to oxidative stress leading to an increased MDA and consequent decreased SOD levels as compared to the control subjects.

Abstract:

This project analyzes satellite images from 1976, 1985 and 2000 of Dutse, Jigawa state, in north-western Nigeria. The analyzed satellite images were used to determine land-use and vegetation changes that have occurred in the land-use from 1976 to 2000 will help recommend possible planning measures in order to protect the vegetation from further deterioration.

Studying land-use change in north-western Nigeria is essential for analyzing various ecological and developmental consequences over time. The north-western region of Nigeria is of great environmental and economic importance having land cover rich in agricultural production and livestock grazing. The increase of population over time has affected the land-use and hence agricultural and livestock production.

On completion of this project, the possible land use changes that have taken place in Dutse will be analyzed for future recommendation. The use of supervised classification and change detection of satellite images have produced an economic way to quantify different types of landuse and changes that has occurred over time.

The percentage difference in land-use between 1976 and 2000 was 37%, which is considered to be high land-use change within the period of study. The result in this project is being used to propose planning strategies that could help in planning sustainable land-use and diversity in Dutse.

Abstract:
The name Lemmens did not only have significance for his students, but also for several critics. Jaak Nikolaas Lemmens (1823-1881) had an enormous impact on the art of the organ music in France in the nineteenth century. The American public knew him as a result of his three Organ sonatas. The works of Bach and other composers like Mendelssohn mainly influenced his performance. Lemmens was seen as a French organist and in the nineteenth century it was not common for a French organist to include works of German composers in concerts due to the mainstream of playing, which was improvisation. He also taught his students on the model of Bach. Hesse introduced Lemmens to the German organ style. One of his students, Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), carried on with this tradition. He went on to become one of the great organ-composers of the nineteenth century and was also one of the first to compose a sonata. Guilmant often included the works of German composers in his recitals and had insight into the works of Mendelssohn on his many visits to England. Although both these composers were French, they came under the influence of the German organ tradition. The formal structures, counterpoint and fugues included in their sonatas, are a direct reference to the Trio sonatas of JS. Bach and the organ sonatas of Mendelssohn. In this study, a short introduction to the organ tradition in nineteenth-century France will be given as well as some information about Lemmens and Guilmant. The influence of the German organ tradition on the Three Sonatas of Lemmens and the Eight Sonatas of Guitmant will be shown and it will be proven that indeed the German masters had an influence on the French organ music of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Semiconductor logic burn-in is a process during which potentially large quantities of devices are subjected to elevated temperatures and voltages in order to accelerate latent reliability defects and processing problems to failure prior to customer delivery. During burn-in, there is typically a large variation in the device power levels as well as a product-specific maximum burn-in temperature. Such variations result in a wide device temperature distribution (i.e., device temperature spread), which lowers the median allowable device temperature for the lot. Burn-in time is directly related to the median device temperature, in the sense that the lower the median temperature, the longer the required burn-in time. An optimum thermal management solution is one that is reliable, low-cost, enables a high median device temperature, and maximizes device throughput. Current thermal solutions include forced convection air-cooling, single-phase liquid-cooled heat sinks, and thermoelectric coolers. Some of the solutions employ thermal interface materials, as well as an active thermal control scheme for minimization of device temperature spread. All current solutions also employ an engage mechanism that places the thermal solution in contact with the device under test (DUT). The thermal solution at each DUT is typically gimbaled in an effort to ensure uniform contact pressure between the cooling head and device. The present study deals with the application of direct spray cooling of semiconductor devices undergoing burn-in: this approach negates the need for an actuation mechanism and thermal interface material, is capable of reduced junction temperature spread via active thermal control, and results in reduced across device temperature “gradients”. A spray cooled burn-in slot level prototype was built to accommodate single burn-in boards for bare DUTs as well as small and large lidded DUTs. The solution was investigated primarily for thermal capability and device-to-device junction temperature spread, but results were also obtained for on-DUT thermal “gradients”. For the specific test conditions selected, the heat flux removal capability demonstrated was 146W/cm2 for the bare DUT, 136W/cm2 for the small lidded DUT, and 63W/cm2 for the large lidded DUT. For each DUT investigated, and through the use of active flow control, the device temperature spread between two devices running at a 50% difference in power levels was shown to be less than 1°C.
