Abstract:

This project analyzes satellite images from 1976, 1985 and 2000 of Dutse, Jigawa state, in north-western Nigeria. The analyzed satellite images were used to determine land-use and vegetation changes that have occurred in the land-use from 1976 to 2000 will help recommend possible planning measures in order to protect the vegetation from further deterioration.

Studying land-use change in north-western Nigeria is essential for analyzing various ecological and developmental consequences over time. The north-western region of Nigeria is of great environmental and economic importance having land cover rich in agricultural production and livestock grazing. The increase of population over time has affected the land-use and hence agricultural and livestock production.

On completion of this project, the possible land use changes that have taken place in Dutse will be analyzed for future recommendation. The use of supervised classification and change detection of satellite images have produced an economic way to quantify different types of landuse and changes that has occurred over time.

The percentage difference in land-use between 1976 and 2000 was 37%, which is considered to be high land-use change within the period of study. The result in this project is being used to propose planning strategies that could help in planning sustainable land-use and diversity in Dutse.

Abstract:
The name Lemmens did not only have significance for his students, but also for several critics. Jaak Nikolaas Lemmens (1823-1881) had an enormous impact on the art of the organ music in France in the nineteenth century. The American public knew him as a result of his three Organ sonatas. The works of Bach and other composers like Mendelssohn mainly influenced his performance. Lemmens was seen as a French organist and in the nineteenth century it was not common for a French organist to include works of German composers in concerts due to the mainstream of playing, which was improvisation. He also taught his students on the model of Bach. Hesse introduced Lemmens to the German organ style. One of his students, Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), carried on with this tradition. He went on to become one of the great organ-composers of the nineteenth century and was also one of the first to compose a sonata. Guilmant often included the works of German composers in his recitals and had insight into the works of Mendelssohn on his many visits to England. Although both these composers were French, they came under the influence of the German organ tradition. The formal structures, counterpoint and fugues included in their sonatas, are a direct reference to the Trio sonatas of JS. Bach and the organ sonatas of Mendelssohn. In this study, a short introduction to the organ tradition in nineteenth-century France will be given as well as some information about Lemmens and Guilmant. The influence of the German organ tradition on the Three Sonatas of Lemmens and the Eight Sonatas of Guitmant will be shown and it will be proven that indeed the German masters had an influence on the French organ music of the nineteenth century.

Bowring, Janine Zara. "The SaPI master repressor and the bacteriophage Duts : a tale of parasitism, evolution, and interspecific transfer." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8904/.

Full text
Abstract:
Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity islands (SaPIs) form part of the wider family of phage inducible chromosomal islands (PICIs), which are extremely mobile phage satellites. SaPIs are clinically relevant, encoding and disseminating virulence and fitness factors to promote bacterial evolution and pathogenesis. These islands are innately linked to their helper phage’s life cycle, requiring phage-mediated induction and packaging for transfer between bacterial hosts. The inherent association between SaPIs and helper phages is one of the best characterised examples of virus satellite interactions in prokaryotic cells. The SaPIs sit passively in the host chromosome, controlled by the SaPI-encoded master repressor protein; the Stl. Interaction between the SaPIs and their helper phages begins when a phage-encoded protein binds to the Stl to de-repress the island. Different SaPIs encode different Stl repressors, which require diverse phage-encoded proteins for derepression. The best characterised phage-encoded inducers are the trimeric dUTPases (Duts), which traditionally prevent the misincorporation of uracil into DNA, but have been proposed as regulatory proteins that induce SaPIbov1. Recently, the structurally dissimilar phage-encoded dimeric Dut of NM1 has also been shown to mobilize SaPIbov1, but how this is accomplished remains unsolved. Here, this work expands the family of SaPIbov1 phage-encoded inducers to include the subset of phage-encoded dimeric Duts. This develops upon the theory that specific phage-proteins are required for SaPI induction, broadening this vision to show that SaPIs instead target conserved phage mechanisms. Using SaPIbov1 as an example, this study indicates the StlSaPIbov1 can interact with the structurally distinct dimeric and trimeric Duts, whose only shared value is their role for the phage. Furthermore, this study highlights that, although these two proteins are completely unrelated, they both encode one highly variable region (named motif VI). Indeed, the mechanism for the dimeric Dut interaction with the StlSaPIbov1 is investigated here and a number of parallels to the trimeric Dut mode of action are apparent. These results indicate that the structurally divergent dimeric and trimeric Duts interact with the SaPIbov1 Stl using analogous, but distinct mechanisms that represent a fascinating example of convergent evolution. Furthermore, investigations into the SaPIbov1 Stl indicate that Stl accomplishes these interactions with the dimeric and trimeric Duts by using separate domains for each interaction. This intriguing Stl evolution is an elegant strategy utilised by the SaPIs to overcome phage-encoded inducer mutation or exchange. This highlights the continual arms race between the phages, which aim to escape SaPI induction, and the SaPIs, which must overcome these changes for island induction to occur. Furthermore, these results highlight the potential for Stl targeting of structurally diverse, functionally related phage proteins to facilitate intra- and inter-specific transfer. Overall, these results highlight the SaPIs as a fascinating subcellular parasite of the phages, which have evolved a novel strategy to target their phage inducer proteins and achieve transfer. Likewise, this study shows the biological significance of the dimeric Duts as regulatory molecules.

Beaugeard, Marie. "Biosorption of heavy metals by red algae (Palmaria palmata)." Thesis, McGill University, 2001. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=31190.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis entailed an investigation of heavy metal uptake by Palmaria palmata, a red marine alga. The alga was dry and organically certified. The heavy metals of interest were those commonly found in the wastewaters of the printed wiring board industry, namely Cu2+Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn 2+ and Ni2+. The ultimate objective of the work was to determine whether or not the factors expected to influence the metal uptake to the greatest extent could be optimized within functional ranges, leading eventually to process design (beyond the scope of this thesis). These factors were pH, temperature, initial concentration of metal in aqueous solution, and contact time. A number of preliminary experiments were performed to establish a basis for the design of the optimization studies.
Although it was not possible to adequately define optimal regions of operation for the biosorption of heavy metals by Palmaria palmata , general trends were elucidated, and the limitations of the methodology used were clarified. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Clarke, Suzanna. "Being Isadora." Queensland University of Technology, 2003. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15797/.

Full text
Abstract:
Being Isadora is a story of possession. Isadora Duncan, the founder of modern dance, was an intensely creative, free-spirited woman. Her life experiences early last century were as fascinating and tragic as her achievements. In New York in 1985, Isadora's last surviving pupil and adopted daughter, ninety-year old Anna Duncan, is searching for a way to fulfill a long held promise. Isadora wished to control the way she was remembered and had made Anna promise that any remaining film of her dancing would be destroyed. But one film survives and Anna is running out of time to find it. A young Australian journalist, Tamsin Doyle, attends a dance class at the Isadora Duncan Studio and meets Anna, unknowingly becoming part of the quest. Initially the stories of Isadora and Tamsin run parallel, then as Tamsin gets to know Anna, she becomes immersed in a dream world of dramatic incidents from Isadora's life. The dreams become waking experiences and she fears her will is gradually being taken over. She ends up in places - in fact other countries - that she had no intention of being, pursuing an agenda that is not her own. In the second part of the book, she finds herself in Russia, where Isadora lived after the Revolution. She meets and falls in love with Vladimir, the grandson of Isadora's former dance collaborator. Unable to prevent herself being possessed while visiting the school Isadora founded, Tamsin is arrested by the authorities. A Russian KGB officer has his own plans and abducts her, keeping her prisoner in a dacha outside Moscow. He shows her a film of herself dancing and then the surviving film of Isadora. The two are almost identical and a dramatic climax ensues. Themes in the book explore the nature of memory and how it is influenced by photographic and filmic record, love and loss and the way patterns repeat in people's lives in an attempt to change outcomes.

Abstract:
The German place nomenclature in South west Africa, under the influence of various toponymic and linguistic factors, spontaneously developed into a unique toponymicon. The specific nature of this toponymicon is marked by a large number of inherited name transfers from Europe on the one hand and a partially or fully germanized local toponymicon with numerous examples of translations, adopted loan names and substitutions on the other hand. This unique toponymicon mainly originated from the inter linguistic interaction between German, Afrikaans and the indigenous languages of the territory. The supposition on which the theoretical concept and research method was formulated and executed, is the dichotomous nature of the place names as onomastic and linguistic signs. The German place names have certain general, but also intrinsic toponymic and linguistic features in common. This prompted the diachronic and synchronic analysis of the place names on both linguistic and onomastic levels. The onomastic approach entailed the analysis of the structural composition of the place names; the toponymic motives; the interlinguistic contact situation; the origins, etymologies and semantic aspects of the names. On the linguistic level the names were analyzed according to syntagmatic and paradigmatic criteria and categorized according to linguistic principles pertaining to proper nouns, specifically toponyms or place names. The conclusion was reached that the German South West African toponymicon, despite the large number of name transfers that occurred and the close resemblance with its European origins which is still clearly discernible, appears on the formal and functional level as a unique, yet true Southern African toponymicon .

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Sc. (Microbiology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019
Schkuhria pinnata was selected for this study based on its use in traditional medicine. This study was aimed at isolating and charactserising antimycobacterial compounds from S. pinnata. Different extraction procedures coupled with solvents of varying polarities were used in extraction of the plant materials. Solvents of intermediate polarity had the highest mass of the extracts and serial exhaustive extraction was the best extraction procedure which extracted high amounts of plant material obtained with dichloromethane solvent. The chromatograms were developed in three solvent systems (BEA, CEF and EMW) and sprayed with vanillin-sulphuric acid reagent for colour development. Different colours on the chromatograms indicated various phytochemical constituents. Standard chemical tests confirmed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, phlabotannins, terpenes, steroids, cardiac glycosides and saponins. It was discovered that S. pinnata possesses high phenolic and tannin content which could be behind the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities observed. Antioxidant activity was analysed using 2, 2–diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) qualitative and quantitative experiments. Chromatograms were sprayed with 0.2% DPPH solution, yellow bands or spot against the purple background indicated the presence of antioxidant compounds. On quantitative analysis methanol extracts had a good scavenging activity at various concentrations. Ferric ion reducing power of antioxidants from plant extracts was determined using FRAP assay. S. pinnata extracts had high ferric reducing power which was in a concentration-dependent manner. Antimycobacterial activity was evaluated using Bioautography and broth microdilution assays. Plant extracts indicated antimycobacterial activity observed on bioautograms with low MIC values ranging from 0.27 mg/ml to 2.5 mg/ml. African green monkey Vero kidney cells were used to evaluate the toxicity of crude extracts. The plant extract had cytotoxic value of 25 µg/ml with a selectivity index of 0.02 SI. It was observed that S. pinnata had anti-inflammatory activity on LPS-induced Raw 246.7 macrophage cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Bioassay guided fractionation on column chromatography managed to isolate two compounds which were characterised using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The compounds were elucidated to be helaingolide and eucannabinolide sesquiterpene lactones. Biological assays indicated that the compounds were active against Mycobacterium smegmatis. The compounds were toxic to Vero monkey kidney cells with less than 30 µg/ml LC50 value and <1 selectivity index. These compounds had a good anti- inflammatory activity on LPS-induced Raw 246.7 macrophage cells which was in a concentration dependent manner. The compounds can be used as new leads in the development of anti-inflammatory and antimycobacterial drugs. The crude extracts and the isolated compounds from S. pinnata should be evaluated for their cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory effects in in vivo experiments.

Abstract:
The presence of German immigrants - especially the German orphans of 1948, was a known phenomenon to the South African community during the 20th century. After the Second World War, South Africa’s economy developed rapidly and the skills shortage drew immigrants from all over the world. For Germans, South Africa became a prime destination. They were mostly welcomed with open arms. Many of them also played an important role in South African society. Knowledge regarding these Germans, especially those who immigrated between 1945 and 1980, is fading in the 21st century, a century of dramatic changes and challenges. It appears that very little is known with regard to the contribution these German immigrants made towards the development of South Africa and how they integrated into the South African community. Each immigrant brings his own identity, worldview and concepts of how institutions should function. They bridge national borders and entered a new society with its own identity, or in the case of South Africa, multi ethnic identities. The immigrants have to integrate and adapt to the new culture and ways, while they still retain their old cultures. In the process, they develop a new identity, a trans nationality. They influence their environment and the people they came into contact with. In the 1970‟s, it was especially the German historians who developed a new historiography, known as transnational history writing. After the Second World War, the relationships of the Germans and the French became intertwined in Europe. This necessitated a new approach to the communal coexistence of communities in a fast - changing Europe. Previously history was largely written within the context of the national state and within geographic borders. Now history was developing over national borders and people of different nations were starting to live shared lives. By making comparisons and emphasizing differences, a new theory and principles of transnationalism and trans nationality surfaced. This study approaches transnationalism from the context of a family history, with a biographical case study of a single citizen who emigrated from Germany to South Africa. The focus is on how Wolfgang Wehrmeyer was transplanted to a new country and how he developed a transnational identity. This biographical case study is incorporated into a prosopography with the personal experiences of fellow German immigrants in order to gain a comprehensive insight on trans nationality. The findings are analysed and synthesised to come to a comprehensive conclusion as to how German immigrants experienced transnationalism. The purpose of the study is to make a contribution to our knowledge of transnational historiography in South Africa, as well as to our knowledge about the German immigrants and their experiences.

Abstract:
In land-based integrated aquaculture of marine finfish and macroalgae, rearing space is a large expense. Increasing algal stocking density can increase efficiency, but this may require greater irradiance because of self-shading. To determine the irradiance needed, experiments were conducted in one-litre flasks with enriched seawater under natural and artificial illumination. Under natural illumination, a Daily Photon Dose of 17 mol m-2 d-1 at 10 and 14 ºC, Palmaria palmata cultured at 10 g L-1 grew 100 % faster and absorbed 20 % more nutrients than Chondrus crispus. However, Atlantic halibut farm effluent can reach up to 19 ºC in summer, too high for P. palmata. Under artificial illumination, C. crispus performed better than under natural illumination. Light saturation curves indicated nutrient uptake by C. crispus at 10 g L-1 and 10 ºC was highest at 23 mol m-2 d-1 irradiance, equivalent to 400 µmol m-2 s-1 for 16 hours

Abstract:
Text in Afrikaans
This thesis entitled The contribution of Erich Mayer towards the establishment of an aesthetic consciousness and the promotion of an art identity in South Africa to the end of the 1930s, is a study of the ideas, ideals and contributions of the German-Jewish artist Erich Mayer concerning the establishment of a national art identity in South Africa. Mayer was born in Germany in 1876. Because of ill health he came to South Africa, where he settled in 1898 and developed an affinity with the Afrikaner pioneers in the rural areas. This natural connection with the Afrikaner pioneers was the main motivation behind his participation in the Anglo-Boer War. With his sound European background and training at various art academies in Berlin and Stuttgart, he soon realised that a knowledge of European art history or any awareness of an aesthetic consciousness concerning the fine and applied arts was sadly lacking within the general South African community and more specifically amongst the early Afrikaners. As a student, Mayer developed a keen interest in traditional German arts and crafts, which, according to him, contributed to the specific national Germanic character. This interest prompted him to conduct research and document examples of folk art among the Afrikaners as well as other indigenous communities, in an attempt to establish an aesthetic awareness in South Africans, and more specifically among Afrikaners. Mayer was of the opinion that the development and marketing of these cultural objects and artefacts would contribute towards a unique art identity with a strong South African national character. Apart from his interests in the fine and applied arts, Mayer also researched the vernacular architecture, furniture design and household articles of both Afrikaner pioneers and Africans. He travelled widely in South Africa, researching his interests and presented lectures on these themes which he published in newspapers and magazines in an effort to create an awareness of the rich indigenous folk art.
Mayer is in 1876 in Duitsland gebore.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 119-131)
Text in English with summaries in English and Afrikaans
There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. This follows the philosophy of German Naturphilosophie, as well as that of English romantics like Coleridge and Wordsworth, for whom nature functions as a portal to the spiritual world. The concept of the “sublime” underpins this philosophy. If nature is viewed through an imaginative, instead of an empirical lens, it becomes the means by which the temporal world can be transcended. It is a message of hope and as such is in keeping with Andersen’s self professed calling as visionary who uses his art to uplift mankind. In this he is the ultimate romantic hero or outsider who, while standing on the periphery of society, observes its shortcomings and feels called upon to show the way to a better world.
