Anavberokhai, Isah. "Mapping land-use in north-western Nigeria (Case study of Dutse)." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Technology and Built Environment, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-143.
Full textThis project analyzes satellite images from 1976, 1985 and 2000 of Dutse, Jigawa state, in north-western Nigeria. The analyzed satellite images were used to determine land-use and vegetation changes that have occurred in the land-use from 1976 to 2000 will help recommend possible planning measures in order to protect the vegetation from further deterioration.
Studying land-use change in north-western Nigeria is essential for analyzing various ecological and developmental consequences over time. The north-western region of Nigeria is of great environmental and economic importance having land cover rich in agricultural production and livestock grazing. The increase of population over time has affected the land-use and hence agricultural and livestock production.
On completion of this project, the possible land use changes that have taken place in Dutse will be analyzed for future recommendation. The use of supervised classification and change detection of satellite images have produced an economic way to quantify different types of landuse and changes that has occurred over time.
The percentage difference in land-use between 1976 and 2000 was 37%, which is considered to be high land-use change within the period of study. The result in this project is being used to propose planning strategies that could help in planning sustainable land-use and diversity in Dutse.

Full textSchkuhria pinnata was selected for this study based on its use in traditional medicine. This study was aimed at isolating and charactserising antimycobacterial compounds from S. pinnata. Different extraction procedures coupled with solvents of varying polarities were used in extraction of the plant materials. Solvents of intermediate polarity had the highest mass of the extracts and serial exhaustive extraction was the best extraction procedure which extracted high amounts of plant material obtained with dichloromethane solvent. The chromatograms were developed in three solvent systems (BEA, CEF and EMW) and sprayed with vanillin-sulphuric acid reagent for colour development. Different colours on the chromatograms indicated various phytochemical constituents. Standard chemical tests confirmed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, phlabotannins, terpenes, steroids, cardiac glycosides and saponins. It was discovered that S. pinnata possesses high phenolic and tannin content which could be behind the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities observed. Antioxidant activity was analysed using 2, 2–diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) qualitative and quantitative experiments. Chromatograms were sprayed with 0.2% DPPH solution, yellow bands or spot against the purple background indicated the presence of antioxidant compounds. On quantitative analysis methanol extracts had a good scavenging activity at various concentrations. Ferric ion reducing power of antioxidants from plant extracts was determined using FRAP assay. S. pinnata extracts had high ferric reducing power which was in a concentration-dependent manner. Antimycobacterial activity was evaluated using Bioautography and broth microdilution assays. Plant extracts indicated antimycobacterial activity observed on bioautograms with low MIC values ranging from 0.27 mg/ml to 2.5 mg/ml. African green monkey Vero kidney cells were used to evaluate the toxicity of crude extracts. The plant extract had cytotoxic value of 25 µg/ml with a selectivity index of 0.02 SI. It was observed that S. pinnata had anti-inflammatory activity on LPS-induced Raw 246.7 macrophage cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Bioassay guided fractionation on column chromatography managed to isolate two compounds which were characterised using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The compounds were elucidated to be helaingolide and eucannabinolide sesquiterpene lactones. Biological assays indicated that the compounds were active against Mycobacterium smegmatis. The compounds were toxic to Vero monkey kidney cells with less than 30 µg/ml LC50 value and <1 selectivity index. These compounds had a good anti- inflammatory activity on LPS-induced Raw 246.7 macrophage cells which was in a concentration dependent manner. The compounds can be used as new leads in the development of anti-inflammatory and antimycobacterial drugs. The crude extracts and the isolated compounds from S. pinnata should be evaluated for their cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory effects in in vivo experiments.

Full textThis thesis entitled The contribution of Erich Mayer towards the establishment of an aesthetic consciousness and the promotion of an art identity in South Africa to the end of the 1930s, is a study of the ideas, ideals and contributions of the German-Jewish artist Erich Mayer concerning the establishment of a national art identity in South Africa. Mayer was born in Germany in 1876. Because of ill health he came to South Africa, where he settled in 1898 and developed an affinity with the Afrikaner pioneers in the rural areas. This natural connection with the Afrikaner pioneers was the main motivation behind his participation in the Anglo-Boer War. With his sound European background and training at various art academies in Berlin and Stuttgart, he soon realised that a knowledge of European art history or any awareness of an aesthetic consciousness concerning the fine and applied arts was sadly lacking within the general South African community and more specifically amongst the early Afrikaners. As a student, Mayer developed a keen interest in traditional German arts and crafts, which, according to him, contributed to the specific national Germanic character. This interest prompted him to conduct research and document examples of folk art among the Afrikaners as well as other indigenous communities, in an attempt to establish an aesthetic awareness in South Africans, and more specifically among Afrikaners. Mayer was of the opinion that the development and marketing of these cultural objects and artefacts would contribute towards a unique art identity with a strong South African national character. Apart from his interests in the fine and applied arts, Mayer also researched the vernacular architecture, furniture design and household articles of both Afrikaner pioneers and Africans. He travelled widely in South Africa, researching his interests and presented lectures on these themes which he published in newspapers and magazines in an effort to create an awareness of the rich indigenous folk art.
Mayer is in 1876 in Duitsland gebore.

Greyvensteyn, Annette. "Hans Christian Andersen's romantic imagination : exploring eighteenth and nineteenth century romantic conceptualisations of the imagination in selected fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen." Diss., 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25146.
Full textText in English with summaries in English and Afrikaans
There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. This follows the philosophy of German Naturphilosophie, as well as that of English romantics like Coleridge and Wordsworth, for whom nature functions as a portal to the spiritual world. The concept of the “sublime” underpins this philosophy. If nature is viewed through an imaginative, instead of an empirical lens, it becomes the means by which the temporal world can be transcended. It is a message of hope and as such is in keeping with Andersen’s self professed calling as visionary who uses his art to uplift mankind. In this he is the ultimate romantic hero or outsider who, while standing on the periphery of society, observes its shortcomings and feels called upon to show the way to a better world.
