Abstract:

Binary and Non-Binary Turbo codes have been deployed in several digital communication standards to perform error correction. In order to enhance their error performance, several schemes such as Joint Source Channel Decoding (JSCD), extrinsic information scaling mechanisms, and prioritized QAM constellation mapping have been proposed for improving the error performance of error correcting codes. In this paper, hybrid schemes comprising of JSCD, regression based extrinsic information scaling, and prioritized 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) with binary and non-binary Turbo codes h

Abstract:
Over the past decade, telecommunication systems have dramatically grown providing services which require ever more data rate with ever more mobility. To sustain this growth, enhanced and new techniques were implemented in ever more optimised digital circuits. A novel approach could be soon necessary for some of these techniques, due to the limitations of their hardware implementations. Error correction is one of them. It allows to reduce the energy used to send information, but, when implemented on a chip, it is a bottleneck in terms of data throughput and of, paradoxically, power consumption.

Abstract:
Double binary convolutional turbo codes, using Circular Recursive Systematic Convolutional (CRSC) codes as component codes, have been shown to outperform binary turbo codes. These codes are adopted in the Digital Video Broadcasting--Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RCS) standard. The outstanding coding performance of these codes intrigues the investigation of hardware implementation issues. In this thesis, first a simplified Max_Log_MAP algorithm is derived for the Non-binary convolutional turbo code, and then different aspects of the implementation issues of the decoder with VLSI are explore
