Abstract:
The reception history of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies in America offers striking evidence of multiple, previously unidentified, Continental and English connections to the musical thought of John Sullivan Dwight (1813–93), the first American-born critic of art music, and therefore to early American conceptions of the symphony in the 1840s. These direct links illuminate the history and criticism of the first performance in America of Beethoven's Symphony no. 9 in D minor, op. 125, which took place in New York in 1846. From the many sources associated with Dwight's musical learning and aesthetic education, I have chosen in this article to examine Dwight's literary interest in Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller's poem ‘An die Freude’ and in Thomas Carlyle's biography of Schiller, to document his knowledge of commentary on the symphony by the German critic Adolf Bernhard Marx, and to describe Dwight's response to the initial American performance of the Ninth Symphony.

Abstract:
The author was deployed to Iraq as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard in April 2004. He left his acoustic piano roots and embraced electronic music as a way to stay involved with music during his deployment. While deployed in Iraq, Thompson recorded and released a CD entitled Baghdad Music Journal (BMJ). The soldier’s recording was made and released while he was deployed to an active war zone and is a document of his experience. Describing his time in Iraq, he discusses how it has changed his musical practice.

Abstract:
Musicological research on nineteenth-century music blossomed during the 1970s. The surge was solidified with the founding of the journal 19th-Century Music in 1977, roughly a year after the establishment of the Sonneck Society and a decade before the appearance of AmeriGrove I. During this decade, the journal published seven articles on nineteenth-century American subjects (all on the United States, not other American regions or countries). By contrast, the official journal of the Sonneck Society, American Music, published nearly twice that number between 1983 and 1986 alone. Although this simple metric has sociological explanations exceeding the scope of this review, it suggests that work on nineteenth-century music in the Americas stood at some remove from general musicological discourse in the Sonneck Society's early days.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to establish trends in the study of music and affective phenomena through a content and bibliometric analysis of three eminent music research journals, the Journal of Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, and Music Perception, for the years 1990 through 2009. Excluding editorials, paper responses, and book reviews, 1,293 articles were examined, resulting in 286 (22%) publications that met criteria for further analysis. Data indicated several trends with respect to the sample analyzed, including a notable but not significant decrease of affective studies in the Journal of Research in Music Education, with significant increases in the journal Music Perception. Other trends indicated the emergence of topics and methods that were less prevalent when compared to the overall sample but that evidenced significant increases throughout the period analyzed. These increases occurred for topics relating to expression, physiological and neurological issues and for the use of descriptive methodologies. Other notable trends included increases in examinations of folk, jazz, and world musics.

Abstract:
AT DINNER I mention that a few days before I had been to the Middlesex Music Hall in Drury Lane. My neighbour to the left tells me that it is the commonest theatre in all London, and my neighbour to the right says that of its kind it ranks as the poshest. My neighbour across the way, Herr Mess of Frankfurt, asks me to take him along, please, if I ever go somewhere like that again. Did I have anything on for tonight? I say I meant to go to a music hall in Whitechapel. He is wildly enthusiastic, but takes so long to put on his overcoat that we shall be too late. Meanwhile we are joined by a young French Swiss and we go to the Middlesex Music Hall. Neither gentleman seems to have the foggiest notion of what sort of place it is. The dances bore them, the music isn't pretty enough for them. The girls on stage are too young for them, the audience too loud, they don't hear the tunes, they don't see the costumes and they don't feel the century-old atmosphere surrounding them. One of them takes his hometown paper out of his pocket, the other regrets he is unable to strike up an ‘acquaintance’ in his vicinity.
