Full textA normative moral theory often aims at satisfying at least one of two following goals; the theoretical aim–a criterion of rightness which dictates what makes right action right, and/or the practical aim–a decision procedure which is intended to work as a manual to to find out what right action entails in individual situations. My thesis is that virtue theory can satisfy both of these goals and the purpose here is to define a decision procedure. The method will be based on an examination of a criterion of rightness. In this criterion of rightness, the virtuous agent is what constitutes the right-making characteristic of an action. The thesis is that the virtuous agent can be understood as a person in eudaimonia, and in order to provide a concrete decision procedure, I will explain, for the purpose, the relevant aspects of an empirical and psychological theory of what constitutes eudaimonia, but also relevant aspects of Rosalind Hursthouse's applied virtue ethics on moral dilemmas. This analysis will result in four components that together constitute the decision procedure in question. Furthermore, I will justify how it may be reasonable to assume that in order to achieve this type of right action, some basic preconditions need to be satisfied early in a person's life. This, I suggest, leads to the conclusion that some people have difficulties to achieve right actions. This fact should not be seen as a weakness of virtue theory but as valuable information about human nature from which we can try to embed a change in human moral potential.

In this paper the author presents and discusses three charges that have been raised against Rosalind Hursthouses virtue ethical account on what it takes for an action to be morally right. Hursthouse proposes that an action is right, if and only if, it is what a virtuous agent characteristically would to in the circumstances. All of the charges discussed and presented in the paper try to show that Hursthouses account excludes actions which we would like to say are morally right.
The author argues that a Neo-Aristotelian form of virtue ethics, like the one Hursthouse defends, can be formulated so that the charges can be avoided. The author proposes that, instead of understanding Hursthouses account as if it is only the very actions that virtuous agents perform that are morally right, we should observe that the virtuous agents are acting from maxims that they have tested during their development towards becoming virtuous agents. The author then proposes that an action is right if it can be traced from a maxim that can be a characteristic part of a virtuous life.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to investigate what norms and discourses exist at my preschool and how they contribute to create different constructions of children from a discourse perspective. Furthermore, I want to investigate the causes of my and my colleagues' patterns of action as well as the possibilities for action that exist in the emerging situations from two ethical perspectives, duty ethics and virtues. The essay is about the difficulty to cater to the best of the whole group and to take care of each child’s unique needs at the same time. The idea behind this essay was raised when I noted in my department that one child was blamed for all that went wrong. The essay begins with the description of some situations where my colleagues, through both their verbal and physical actions, express how difficult it is to meet children that behave in a way that makes them worried and puzzled. I do not raise my own concerns about the boy’s behavior or how the teachers react to his needs. When I finally dare to speak up during a meeting with the special pedagogue I risk destroying their chances to get an extra teacher for this child. My colleagues focus on his shortcomings and express a desire to correct his behaviour. My focus is on changing and adapting the environment, activities, routines and our approach to meeting the individual child’s specific needs. I reflect on the causes of my and my colleagues' actions as well as our possibilities of action using two ethical perspectives, duty ethics and virtues. These perspectives open up for an in-depth understanding of the dilemma through an insider perspective. Using this perspective, I can express my personal thoughts and speculations. An outsider's perspective comprises of a discourse perspective that helps me to see the discourses and the norms that contribute to the constructions of the children that are being created at my preschool. I even reflect over my own practical knowledge that has helpt me to learn from my own and other peoples experience, so I can develop my abilities and act wisely in different situations.

Full textHow do we attribute moral responsibility, and why? The notion of free will is heavily debated within philosophy, thus questioning whether we can truly be morally responsible for our actions. One of the arguments said to threaten the notion of free will is the vast collection of situationist literature that seem to show that human behavior is often more influenced by situational factors rather than personality traits. The Explanation Hypothesis (EH) is a psychological hypothesis that make general claims about everyday moral judgements, as well as accounting for philosophical issues such as the inconsistency of folk-intuitions on these issues. This study used surveys to test EH experimentally, also investigating folk-intuitions on moral responsibility in scenarios related to the situationist literature. The results support the hypothesis according to an earlier, similar study, as well as showing that the participants moral judgements were not influenced by being made aware of strong, psychosocial phenomena that seem to have had an impact on agents behaviors. The implications for the philosophical debate on free will and moral responsibility as well as the notion of determinism is discussed and further research is proposed.
