Abstract:
There is still lack of effective modeling and simulation method for complex electromechanical coupling system. Modelica is a multi-domain unified modeling language to solve the modeling and simulation problems of the complex and heterogeneous physical systems. Dymola is a Modelica-based modeling and simulation platform for the complex physical systems. In this paper, the dynamics model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)-precision reducer system is established using Lagrange-Maxwell equation. The simulation model of this system is set up with Modelica language. The simulation of the system is realized in Dymola. Results show that the system can respond to good static and dynamic characteristics under a given speed for different loads. The dynamics model of the PMSM-precision reducer system can be further used in system control and optimization. The proposed modeling and simulation method based on Modelica may be commonly applied to other complex electromechanical systems.

Abstract:
With ever increasing numbers of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV’s) being developed, come new challenges in the field of automotive engineering. Whilst there has been considerable work conducted on HEV’s from a powertrain, efficiency, and control systems perspective, very little work has been instigated in the field of how the introduction of such hybrid systems effect passive vehicle dynamics. One of the possible obstacles in the way of such studies is the multitude of powertrain architectures that are present or possible in HEV’s. This obstacle can make investigations very application specific, and leads to inefficiencies in the modelling process. This paper discusses the development of a model constructed in Dymola in order to investigate the effects of hybrid powertrains on ride and handling. The modelling methodology is presented, along with model based testing and validation of component and the full vehicle models. Whilst the development of the model is introduced for a specific study, it is shown that the way in which the model has been developed lends itself easily to use in other fields. It is shown that the modular construction of the model, and the physical, object orientated modelling approach facilitated by Dymola, allow varying numbers and complexities of component models to be utilised within the same basic model. Such an approach means that one base model can be utilised for differing hybrid architectures for ride, handling and drivability studies thus reducing modelling time and complexity.

Abstract:
The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system negatively affects the electric vehicle (EV) driving range, especially under cold ambient conditions. Modern HVAC systems based on the vapour-compression cycle can be rearranged to operate in the heat pump mode to improve the overall system efficiency compared to conventional electrical/resistive heaters. Since such an HVAC system is typically equipped with multiple actuators (compressor, pumps, fans, valves), with the majority of them being controlled in open loop, an optimisation-based control input allocation is necessary to achieve the highest efficiency. This paper presents a genetic algorithm optimisation-based HVAC control input allocation method, which utilises a multi-physical HVAC system model implemented in Dymola/Modelica. The considered control inputs include the cabin inlet air temperature reference, blower and radiator fan air mass flows and secondary coolant loop pumps’ speeds. The optimal allocation is subject to specified, target cabin air temperatures and heating power. Additional constraints include actuator hardware limits and safety functions, such as maintaining the superheat temperature at its reference level. The optimisation objective is to maximise the system efficiency defined by the coefficient of performance (COP). The optimised allocation maps are fitted by proper mathematical functions to facilitate the control strategy implementation and calibration. The overall control strategy consists of superimposed cabin air temperature controller that commands heating power, control input allocation functions, and low-level controllers that ensure cabin inlet air and superheat temperature regulation. The control system performance is verified through Dymola simulations for the heat pump mode in a heat-up scenario. Control input allocation map optimisation results are presented for air-conditioning (A/C) mode, as well.

Abstract:
Solar thermal technologies are already available on the market, and they are robust and relatively cheap. Unfortunately, solar heat is seldom used in the industrial processes, and the main obstacle of solar heat diffusion is often the lack of adequate predictive modelling of solar plant integration that identifies its energy potential, economic feasibility, and environmental benefits. In this paper, we aim to investigate and evaluate the possibility of supplying solar heat to the pasta-drying process located in the northeast of the Italian Alps (“Felicetti”). The methodology proposed is structured with the combination of several software, namely, PVGIS®, Matlab®, Dymola®. The methodology developed is tested, considering solar thermal energy as the primary source, in different geographical contexts.

Hybrid sorption-compression systems are gaining interest for heating/cooling/ refrigeration purposes in different applications, since they allow exploiting the benefits of both technologies and a better utilization of renewable sources. However, design of such components is still difficult, due to the intrinsic complexity of the systems and the lack of reliable models. In particular, the combination of adsorption-compression cascade unit has not been widely explored yet and there are no simulations or sizing tools reported in the literature. In this context, the present paper describes a model of a hybrid adsorption-compression system, realised in Modelica language using the commercial software Dymola. The models of the main components of the sorption and vapour compression unit are described in details and their validation presented. Summary Biological systems are often very complex so that an appropriate formalism is needed for modeling their behavior. Hybrid Petri Nets, consisting of time-discrete Petri Net elements as well as continuous ones, have proven to be ideal for this task. Therefore, a new Petri Net library was implemented based on the object-oriented modeling language Modelica which allows the modeling of discrete, stochastic and continuous Petri Net elements by differential, algebraic and discrete equations. An appropriate Modelica-tool performs the hybrid simulation with discrete events and the solution of continuous differential equations. A special sub-library contains so-called wrappers for specific reactions to simplify the modeling process. The Modelica-models can be connected to Simulink-models for parameter optimization, sensitivity analysis and stochastic simulation in Matlab. The present paper illustrates the implementation of the Petri Net component models, their usage within the modeling process and the coupling between the Modelica-tool Dymola and Matlab/Simulink. The application is demonstrated by modeling the metabolism of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the development of a simulation platform for the dynamic analysis of systems characterised by different physical domains. The research has been carried out in the context of the EC-funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (Green Regional Aircraft/All-Electric Aircraft domain). In particular, the objective of the research is focused on the on-board systems of new All-Electric Aircraft, where a crucial design point is related to the electrical energy management. In the “all-electric” concept, where pneumatic and hydraulic power systems are eliminated to improve aviation costs and environmental impact, the dynamics of electrical power absorptions is to be characterised and managed to avoid excessive peaks with respect to generators capabilities. The paper describes the architecture of a Matlab/Simulink simulation platform developed in order to design and validate of the electrical energy management logics, which lead up to 32% reduction of the maximum power request for the case study considered. Thanks to an approach based on a mixing of co-simulation and S-function compiling, the platform integrates models coming from different environments (AMESim, Dymola/Modelica), and developed by various partners/specialists.

when the steam turbine-generator is connected with series of compensation along the transmission line, the sub synchronous resonance may happen. The Flexible Ac Transmission System (FACTS) controller of the devices wide use which has been used to reduce and suppress the phenomenon of sub-synchronous resonance the Thyristor Control Series Compensation (TCSC) and Static VAR Compensation (SVC) are the types of FACTS controller that has been used to put down the SSR and also for the purpose of provide a better and efficient solution to improve the transferred capacity system to connect the series compensation along the transmission line. Series capacitor work to increase the chance of creating sub synchronous resonance. Series capacitors also have an inclination to amplify the shaft stress during considerable network transien toccurrence, SSR phenomena happen which can cause damage of the shaft generator turbine. The first standard model of IEEE was adopted to study this phenomenon. This research deals the PID control of SVC( Static VAR Compensation) and TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator) and excitation system controller for reducing SSR in power system. In this research, the method of Eigenvalue was used to analysis the sub-synchronous resonance phenomenon and the result was verified using DYMOLA simulation

Abstract:
Abstract Today, strict insulation requirements apply. Nevertheless, the inverse correlation of thermal conductivity with insulation thickness leads to decreasing energy savings with increasing insulation packages. Therefore, a balance between potential energy savings and environmental impact due to additional materials using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) needs to be strived for. This balance is sought for a case study called ‘The Mobble’ i.e. a flexible, modular, and circular building system developed by a student team from Ghent University. Through an iterative design process supported by LCA, comfort and dynamic energy simulations efforts are made to design an energy-efficient and low impact module with an agreeable indoor environment. First, material choices are made based on LCA and the material impact of a 5-module home is calculated. Second, energy calculations are executed in Modelica/Dymola. For this, three possible energy reductions are explored: insulating the building, altering the working regime of the HVAC system and lowering the setpoint temperature while maintaining comfort by using personal comfort systems (PCS). The results support PCS as a possible energy conservation measure and indicate that reducing operational energy does not shift the environmental burden to the additional materials’ production. However, these environmental saving effects decrease as the operational share decreases.

Abstract:
Abstract Residential buildings claim a significant share of the total energy use worldwide. In order to have more realistic energy performance predictions, increased attention is paid to the analysis of the building’s energy use through comprehensive, transient detailed numerical simulations. In this article, the self-consumption and self-sufficiency values of three detached residential buildings are assessed through numerical models made in the programming language Modelica and software tool Dymola. The three buildings have the same structure and different space heating energy demands of 15 kWh/m2year, 30 kWh/m2year and 45 kWh/m2year. The energy use of the buildings coincides with the occupancy profile where domestic hot water use dominates over the space heating demand provided by an air to water heat pump. The discrepancy between renewable energy production and energy consumption is mitigated by means of thermal load shifting and electrical energy storage. In this research, the self-consumption and self-sufficiency of the studied buildings have been analysed as a function of the economically favourable energy storage sizing. For the use of an electrical battery with the installed capacity of 2.5 kWh and thermal energy storage of 250 l, the self-sufficiency results to be 40%, 38.5% and 37% for the three buildings respectively at the specific simulated energy demand conditions.

Abstract:
This article studies a composite solar wall with latent storage (TES) designed to heat rooms inside buildings during the cold season. No numerical model of the composite solar wall is currently available in the Dymola/Modelica software library. The first objective of this work is to develop one such model. The article describes the elementary components, along with the equations that allow modeling the heat transfers and storage phenomena governing both the thermal behavior and performance of the solar wall. This model was built by assembling various existing basic elements from the software’s “Building” library (e.g., models of heat transfer by convection, radiation and conduction) and then creating new elements, such as the storage element incorporating the phase change material (PCM). To validate this solar wall model, numerical results are compared to experimental data stemming from a small-scale composite solar wall manufactured in our laboratory, and the experimental set-up could be tested under real weather conditions. After verifying the level of confidence in the model, the energy performance of two solar walls, one with a conventional storage wall (sensible heat storage) the other containing a PCM (the same as in the experiment), are compared. The result indicates that the solar wall incorporating a PCM does not in this case release any more energy in the room to be heated.

Abstract:
During conceptual design phase, system architects pre-validate architectures following different constrains. This paper proposes a new pre-designing method applied to a flexible multibody system to characterize its vibrational behavior analytically with Dymola/Modelica language. We study the vibration interaction between perturbations sources (motors) and receivers (electronic cards) through a flexible beam with arbitrary boundary conditions. In fact, a lot of mechatronic systems may have their natural frequencies and mode shapes dependent on their spatial configuration, which affect the dynamic response of the system. This methodology shows that using Modelica, we can implement different boundary conditions, making the element suitable for any multibody simulation. This model can help system architects to study the influence of the boundary conditions on the system response. Two types of boundary conditions are considered in this study, simply supported–simply supported (S-S) and clamped–clamped (C-C). The solution for this issue would be a pre-positioning procedure which targets to provide a support for decision-making on the feasibility of a given system architecture at an early design stage, before proceeding to the detailed design. The simulation results have been validated with respect to the literature and by a comparison with those obtained by the model based on the Beam component which belongs to the Modelica flexible Bodies Library.

Abstract:
Modern electric vehicle heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems operate in more efficient heat pump mode, thus, improving the driving range under cold ambient conditions. Coupling those HVAC systems with novel heating technologies such as infrared heating panels (IRP) results in a complex system with multiple actuators, which needs to be optimally coordinated to maximise the efficiency and comfort. The paper presents a multi-objective genetic algorithm-based control input allocation method, which relies on a multi-physical HVAC model and a CFD-evaluated cabin airflow distribution model implemented in Dymola. The considered control inputs include the cabin inlet air temperature, blower and radiator fan air mass flows, secondary coolant loop pump speeds, and IRP control settings. The optimisation objective is to minimise total electric power consumption and thermal comfort described by predictive mean vote (PMV) index. Optimisation results indicate that HVAC and IRP controls are effectively decoupled, and that a significant reduction of power consumption (typically from 20% to 30%) can be achieved using IRPs while maintaining the same level of thermal comfort. The previously proposed hierarchical HVAC control strategy is parameterised and extended with a PMV-based controller acting via IRP control inputs. The performance is verified through simulations in a heat-up scenario, and the power consumption reduction potential is analysed for different cabin air temperature setpoints.

Abstract:
Low temperature is the most significant feature of the future district heating (DH) - the 4th generation district heating (4GDH). The revolutionary temperature level (50–55/25°C) will improve the efficiency of heat sources, thermal storages, and distribution systems, meanwhile, bring huge potentials to renewable energies. One challenge of transition to the future DH is the compatibility of current customer installations and the future temperature level. The aim of this study was to find the temperature potential of Norwegian residential buildings for the future DH system. A reference apartment was created, and typical space heating (SH) system was designed. A detailed building and SH system model were built in Modelica® language, and simulation was conducted via Dymola environment. Different operation strategies: PI control of the supply temperature, weather compensated control of the supply temperature, and PI control of the return temperature were tested. The results of the study showed the average supply temperature could be as low as 56~58°C, and only limited time the temperature was above 60 °C, when the controlled supply temperature strategies were applied. For the case with controlled return temperature strategies, the average return temperature were 30 and 37°C, while the average required supply temperature could be 72 and 94°C. The conclusion was that the low supply temperature could be achieved through optimized operation strategies. Whereas, the low return temperature was not able to be achieved only by improving the operation strategy.

Abstract:
The substation is one of the most important nodes for the power system voltage control. Its dynamic behavior is usually characterized by the interaction of dynamic load models, describing continues variables governed by differential equations, and of discrete controllers and coordinated logic, describing symbolic variables governed by discrete behaviors, logic rules and switching mechanisms. Therefore, the operation and control of the substation is a typical hybrid dynamic system. To make an effective voltage coordinated control in substation, this paper proposed a hybrid predictive control strategy. First, the discrete-time hybrid automata model was given for describing the hybrid voltage control system in substation. Then, by using the voltage-security control constrain instead of the goal of voltage-security control, the voltage coordinated control problem can be converted to a minimization cost problem on the premise of the voltage-security control, based on the technology of the MPC. And, for the discrete control characteristics and different control delays of multi-controllers, a branch and search algorithm was designed to solve the hybrid predictive control problem. This proposed algorithm is suitable for the voltage predictive control of substation, which have less control variables and different controllers’ delays. Finally, the coordinated controller was designed on Dymola. And the example of BPA test system three generations and ten buses included was given for simulation analysis and the verification by the proposed approach for substation coordinated voltage control. The results of simulation showed that the proposed control strategy in the paper is feasible.
