Abstract:
As dynamic web applications are becoming widespread nearly in every area, ASP.NET is one of the popular development languages in this domain. The errors in these web applications can reduce the credibility of the site and cause possible loss of a number of clients. Therefore, testing these applications becomes significant. We present an automated tool to test ASP.NET web applications against execution errors and HTML errors that cause displaying inaccurate and incomplete information. Our tool, called Mamoste, adapts concolic testing technique which interleaves concrete and symbolic executions to generate test inputs dynamically. Mamoste also considers page events as inputs which cannot be handled with concolic testing. We have performed experiments on a subset of an heavily used ASP.NET application of a government office. We have found 366 HTML errors and a faulty component which is used almost every ASP.NET page in this application. In addition, Mamoste discovered that a common user control is misused in several generated pages.

Abstract:
Creating websites providing dynamic services is an extensive process. Intelligent systems are used to create websites with dynamic services. Current intelligent systems are hard to use and configure by the average user. The generated websites are usually custom built to solve one problem and cannot be fully customizable for users on different environments. This thesis presents a technological solution that enables the average user to create websites with dynamic services by providing a number of parameters. The website generator is a web-based application that generates all the components of the website. The components act as portlets and the generated website will be the portal application. The data engine generator creates the website's underlying database. To enable distributed enterprise/business architecture, the data engine generator records the metadata about the database and the website to be generated. The website generator is a cost effective, dynamic, secure, reliable, and scalable solution that outperforms current website generators and portal applications.

Abstract:
Learning management systems are widely used in educational organizations and universities to deliver self-paced online courses. Furthermore, educational theories have suggested that providing learners with learning material suitable for their learning styles may affect their learning performance. Learners with different individual traits, levels of knowledge, backgrounds, and characteristics are using these learning systems to enhance their learning understanding. This study is concerned with personalizing learning environments based on each learner’s individual needs by designing and developing intelligent adaptive e-learning management systems. These systems behave according to the data collected in a ‘learner model’ from the learner to provide accurate learning material that adapts to learners’ needs by changing the learning environment rapidly based on the learners’ learning requirements and their learning styles. A dynamic adaptive e-learning system (DAELS) is proposed. The idea is to build an algorithm that can quickly understand an individual learner’s learning styles. We propose the Similarity algorithm, which aims to adapt to the student’s learning styles by taking advantage of the experience of previous students that used the same system and studied the same course. This algorithm presents the content to each student according to predictions of his/her preferred learning styles. These predictions can change during a student’s progress and response to the presentation. The ID3 machine learning method was used and integrated into our Similarity algorithm. Such a method can search learners' databases efficiently and quickly by classifying learners based on their attributes. Methods and associated techniques that address these issues by use of Felder and Silverman Learning Styles Model (FSLSM) have been developed and can be built into Moodle, the learning management system, as an integral component. We then conducted experiments on students to evaluate the flexibility of the DAELS and its effect on students’ learning performance. An experiment was designed and implemented to validate the proposed approach’s reliability and performance on learners’ scores. The proposed DAELS was compared with a static adaptive e-learning system (SAELS) and a non-adaptive e-learning system (non-AELS). The results of the empirical experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of using DAELS on student performance. On average, the dynamic adaptive group had an average increase of 60% in the post-test from pre-test, whereas the average score of the static group increased 32%, and the control group had an average increase of 8%. The results reveal that the dynamic group had the highest average scores in the post-test, and the control group had the lowest average increase in scores. The findings indicate that the developed Similarity algorithm, implemented in our DAELS for personalising learning content presentation according to students’ learning styles, is appropriate in e-learning systems and can enhance learning quality.

Abstract:
Advances in dynamic fracture modelling have become more frequent due to increases in computer speed, meaning that its application to industrial problems has become viable. From this, the author has reviewed current literature in terms of graphite material properties, structural dynamics, fracture mechanics and modelling methodologies to be able to address operational issues related to the ageing of Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) cores. In particular, the experimentally observed Prompt Secondary Cracking (PSC) of graphite moderator bricks which has yet to be observed within operational reactors, with the objective of supporting their plant life extension. A method known as eXtended Finite Element Method with Cohesive Zones (XCZM) was developed within Code_Aster open-source FEM software. This enabled the incorporation of velocity toughening, irradiation-induced material degradation effects and multiple 3D dynamic crack initiations, propagations and arrests into a single model, which covers the major known attributes of the PSC mechanism. Whilst developing XCZM, several publications were produced. This started with first demonstrating XCZM's ability to model the PSC mechanism in 2D and consequently that methane holes have a noticeable effect on crack propagation speeds. Following on from this, XCZM was benchmarked in 2D against literature experiments and available model data which consequently highlighted that velocity toughening was an integral feature in producing energetically correct fracture speeds. Leading on from this, XCZM was taken into 3D and demonstrated that it produced experimentally observed bifurcation angle from a literature example. This meant that when a 3D graphite brick was modelled that the crack profile was equivalent to an accepted quasi-static profile. As a consequence of this validation, the XCZM approach was able to model PSC and give insight into features that could not be investigated previously including: finer-scale heterogeneous effects on a dynamic crack profile, comparison between Primary and Secondary crack profiles and also, 3D crack interaction with a methane hole, including insight into possible crack arrest. XCZM was shown to improve upon previous 2D models of experiments that showed the plausibility of PSC; this was achieved by eliminating the need for user intervention and also incorporation of irradiation damage effects through User-defined Material properties (UMAT). Finally, while applying XCZM to a full-scale 3D graphite brick including reactor effects, it was shown that PSC is likely to occur under LEFM assumptions and that the Secondary crack initiates before the Primary crack arrests axially meaning that modal analysis would not be able to fully model PSC.

Abstract:
Evolutionary finance studies financial markets from an evolutionary point of view. A financial market can be interpreted in the context of its evolution: it can be understood as a dynamical system in which frequently interacting investment strategies compete for market capital. We are mainly interested in the long-run performance of investment strategies. This thesis explores the "Darwinian theory" of portfolio selection. An asset market can be modelled by a game-theoretic evolutionary model in which asset prices are endogenously determined by market clearing condition. A general version of the Kelly rule is shown to allow an investor to "survive" in the asset market. We then investigate the stochastic model with independent and identical distributed states of the world from a different, game-theoretic, angle and examine Nash equilibrium strategies, satisfying equilibrium conditions with probability one. Evolutionary finance and asset market games also provide new angles to present fundamental facts of capital growth theory. Relations between financial growth and the property of "survival" of investment strategies are established in the market selection process.

Abstract:
The advent of multi-core processors, particularly with projections that numbers of cores will continue to increase, has focused attention on parallel programming. It is widely recognized that current programming techniques, including those that are used for scientific parallel programming, will not allow the easy formulation of general purpose applications. An area which is receiving interest is the use of programming styles which do not have side-effects. Previous work on parallel functional programming demonstrated the potential of this to permit the easy exploitation of parallelism. This thesis investigates a dynamic load balancing system for shared memory Chip Multiprocessors. This system is based on a parallel computing model called SLAM (Spreading Load with Active Messages), which makes use of functional language evaluation techniques. A novel hardware/software mechanism for exploiting fine grain parallelism is presented. This mechanism comprises a runtime system which performs dynamic scheduling and synchronization automatically when executing parallel applications. Additionally the interface for using this mechanism is provided in the form of an API. The proposed system is evaluated using cycle-level models and multithreaded applications running in a full system simulation environment.

Full text
Abstract:
Micromagnetics is a continuum mechanics theory of magnetic materials widely used in industry and academia. In this thesis we describe a complete numerical method, with a number of novel components, for the computational solution of dynamic micromagnetic problems by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. In particular we focus on the use of the implicit midpoint rule (IMR), a time integration scheme which conserves several important properties of the LLG equation. We use the finite element method for spatial discretisation, and use nodal quadrature schemes to retain the conservation properties of IMR despite the weak-form approach. We introduce a novel, generally-applicable adaptive time step selection algorithm for the IMR. The resulting scheme selects error-appropriate time steps for a variety of problems, including the semi-discretised LLG equation. We also show that it retains the conservation properties of the fixed step IMR for the LLG equation. We demonstrate how hybrid FEM/BEM magnetostatic calculations can be coupled to the LLG equation in a monolithic manner. This allows the coupled solver to maintain all properties of the standard time integration scheme, in particular stability properties and the energy conservation property of IMR. We also develop a preconditioned Krylov solver for the coupled system which can efficiently solve the monolithic system provided that an effective preconditioner for the LLG sub-problem is available. Finally we investigate the effect of the spatial discretisation on the comparative effectiveness of implicit and explicit time integration schemes (i.e. the stiffness). We find that explicit methods are more efficient for simple problems, but for the fine spatial discretisations required in a number of more complex cases implicit schemes become orders of magnitude more efficient.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the compilatory dynamics of manuscripts containing francophone story collections in verse. It investigates how the hermeneutic, textual and paratextual frameworks of story collections, as ‘models’ of compilation, were conceived and read in multi-text codices, analysing in particular how paratext shapes textual boundaries, and how ideological agendas are established. The corpus comprises the manuscripts of three different story collections in order to illustrate common compilatory processes (modification, interpolation, extension, continuation, etc.) as well as the extent to which the specific character of the framework (and ‘generic’ identity) of the story collection affects its dissemination. Chapter one addresses the five extant manuscripts of the Fables Pierre Aufons, one of two thirteenth-century French verse translations of Petrus Alfonsi’s highly influential Disciplina clericalis. The dynamic approach to reading in this story collection framed by a father-son exchange is reflected in the variety of its co-texts. The diversity of the corpus illustrates its semantic malleability. By contrast, in chapter two, the multi-text codices of the Old French verse Vie des Pères are characterised less by the heterogeneity of their content than the multiple configurations of this story collection. Hence, the principal focus is the textual and paratextual organisation of the manuscripts and how other material is integrated into the Vie des Pères. The final chapter brings together the principal approaches from the previous two case studies in its investigation of the manuscripts of the Ysopet attributed to Marie de France, examining in particular how the manuscripts construct the figure of the author and how this affects the reception of the fable collection. By considering the reading practices underlying composition, compilation and manuscript production, and how textual and paratextual frameworks affect the reading experience offered by story collections and their co-texts, this thesis engages with the layers of reading embedded within the texts and inscribed in the codex. Moreover, it looks at how we, as modern readers, approach the medieval book.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates decision-making in two-player imperfect information games against opponents whose actions can affect our rewards, and whose strategies may be based on memories of interaction, or may be changing, or both. The focus is on modelling these dynamic opponents, and using the models to learn high-reward strategies. The main contributions of this work are: 1. An approach to learn high-reward strategies in small simultaneous-move games against these opponents. This is done by using a model of the opponent learnt from sequence prediction, with (possibly discounted) rewards learnt from reinforcement learning, to lookahead using explicit tree search. Empirical results show that this gains higher average rewards per game than state-of-the-art reinforcement learning agents in three simultaneous-move games. They also show that several sequence prediction methods model these opponents effectively, supporting the idea of using them from areas such as data compression and string matching; 2. An online expectation-maximisation algorithm that infers an agent's hidden information based on its behaviour in imperfect information games; 3. An approach to learn high-reward strategies in medium-size sequential-move poker games against these opponents. This is done by using a model of the opponent learnt from sequence prediction, which needs its hidden information (inferred by the online expectation-maximisation algorithm), to train a state-of-the-art no-regret learning algorithm by simulating games between the algorithm and the model. Empirical results show that this improves the no-regret learning algorithm's rewards when playing against popular and state-of-the-art algorithms in two simplified poker games; 4. Demonstrating that several change detection methods can effectively model changing categorical distributions with experimental results comparing their accuracies to empirical distributions. These results also show that their models can be used to outperform state-of-the-art reinforcement learning agents in two simultaneous-move games. This supports the idea of modelling changing opponent strategies with change detection methods; 5. Experimental results for the self-play convergence to mixed strategy Nash equilibria of the empirical distributions of plays of sequence prediction and change detection methods. The results show that they converge faster, and in more cases for change detection, than fictitious play.

Static effect of Web pages is no longer useful enough in the age of the Internet. In order to present dynamic and interactive effects on Web pages, some technologies have been developed, such as Common Gateway Interface(CGI), Java Applets, Plug-Ins and ActiveX Controls. But some problems still exist despite of these technologies and the standards. Additionally, the existing concepts of Web page design, which include sequential design, structured design, visualization, and the use of templates, have some disadvantages, such as non-modularization, difficulty of expansion, uneasiness of maintenance, non-reusability and so on. These drawbacks increase the difficulties of developing, maintaining and managing dynamic and interactive Web pages. In this study, we propose a model to overcome the above difficulties and to help designers easily developing Web pages with dynamic and interactive effects by integrating the architecture of DHTML and employing the concept of object—oriented design. The proposed model is used to define the class hierarchy of Web pages and it adopts a three-layered client-server architecture. In this model, everything is an object no matter it is a picture, a link or a page. The designer thus can develop his or her own objects as well as classes. We believe that by describing the internal relationship of objects and the event models, the designer can present the Web pages to achieve more dynamic and interactive effects.

HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) is the language to present a web page on the internet. In HTML, an HTML tag can contain some other HTML tags. This is called a nested HTML formatting Structure. A web page can be easily built by using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML Editor. However, when the format of the web page is edited repeatedly, redundant formatting tags often appear in different depths of a nested HTML formatting structure. This will increase the number of HTML tags, leading to a larger file size and lower transfer efficiency. In this thesis, we propose a dynamic programming algorithm to optimize nested HTML formatting structures. Our optimization algorithm decreases the size of an HTML file without changing its semantics.
