Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
This thesis employs survival analysis framework (Allison, 1984) and the Cox’s hazard model (Cox, 1972) to estimate the probability that a credit rating survives in its current grade at a certain forecast horizon. The Cox’s hazard model resolves some significant drawbacks of the conventional estimation approaches. It allows a rigorous testing of non-Markovian behaviours and time heterogeneity in rating dynamics. It accounts for the changes in risk factors over time, and features the time structure of probability survival estimates. The thesis estimates three stratif

Many researchers have devoted their work to the development of modal analysis extraction techniques in order to obtain more reliable identification of the modal parameters. Also, as a consequence of all this work, there are some other works devoted to the evaluation and comparison of these methods in order to find which one is the most reliable method with respect to certain characteristics. In this thesis the Rational Fraction Polynomial (RFP) Method, the Prony or Complex Exponential Method (CEM), the Ibrahim Time Domain (ITD) Method, and Hilbert Envelope Method are used to evaluate how the

In this Thesis we address the study of some non-linear evolution equations (e.g. pde's) modelling the dynamics of sexually-reproducing structured populations, with special emphasis on biological evolution driven by natural selection. The latter is incorporated into the models through the adaptive dynamics, which is a way of describing how the hereditary characteristics of the population evolve. The sex-ratio, defined as the proportion between females and males, is analyzed from the evolutionary point of view.

The memoir is divided into two parts plus a brief introduction to age-struct

This thesis presents a series of studies on the dynamics of high mass ratio multiples, with applications to planetary systems orbiting stars and stellar systems orbiting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Almost two thousand exoplanetary systems have recently been discovered, and their configurations gave rise to new puzzles to planetary formation theories. We studied the dynamics of planetary systems aiming to understand how the configuration of planetary system is sculptured and to probe the origin of planetary systems. First, we discussed hierarchical three-body dynamics, which can be appl

Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural disasters affecting urban populations. Structural damage caused by the earthquakes varies depending not only on the seismic source and propagation properties but also on the soil properties. The amplitude and frequency content of seismic shear waves reaching the earth&rsquo
s surface is dependent on local soil conditions. It is well known that the soft sediments on top of hard bedrock can greatly amplify the ground motion and cause severe structural damage. On the Blue Nile in Sudan, near the Ethiopian border, there is a measurement station named El Deim. The discharge assessments carried out at this station are crucial for the water resource management in Sudan. Due to changed conditions, caused by a heightening of the downstream-located Roseires dam, new methods for discharge assessment are needed. The objective of the present study was to examine possibilities and methodologies to assess the discharge at this station. The flow dynamics was examined through steady state as well as dynamic hydraulic modeling by use of the Mike 11 modeling softwa

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the behaviour of maps with a unique critical point which is either a maximum or a minimum: so-called unimodal maps. Our first main result proves that for C2+η unimodal maps with non-flat critical point we have good control on the behaviour of cross-ratios on small scales. This result, an improvement on a result of Kozlovski in [K2], proves that in many cases the negative Schwarzian condition (which is not even defined if a map is not C3) is unnecessary. This result follows recent work of Shen, van Strien and Vargas. The main tools are standard cross-ratio estimates, the us
