Abstract:
A roof is a critical envelope of a building. It provides protection for the building interior against various weather elements, such as snow, rain and wind. Roofs are normally composed of several components such as insulation, barriers and water proofing membrane. A roof edge is the perimetric part of a roof that serves as termination for roof components. In generic terms, a roof edge system is composed of a parapet with metal components, such as coping and cleat/clip. The edge system is typically subjected to negative pressure (suction) due to wind flow over the roof. Therefore, a roof edge i

It is recognised that some proportion of South American large-scale topography has been generated by convection within the Earth's mantle. Yet, spatial and temporal patterns of dynamic topography remain poorly understood. Variation of present-day dynamic topography can be mapped in the oceans by calculating residual depths with respect to the well-known age-depth relationship. Along the margins abutting South America, anomalies with amplitudes of $\pm1$ km and wavelengths of $\sim10^{3}$ km are observed. Onshore, dynamic topography is investigated by analysing a range of disparate datasets. Po

Kosbab, Benjamin David. "Seismic performance evaluation of port container cranes allowed to uplift." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/33921.

Full text
Abstract:
The seismic behavior of port container cranes has been largely ignored-by owners, operators, engineers, and code officials alike. This is despite their importance to daily port operations, where historical evidence suggests that port operational downtime following a seismic event can have a crippling effect on the affected local, regional, and national economies. Because the replacement time in the event of crane collapse can be a year or more, crane collapse has the potential to be the "critical path" for post-disaster port recovery. Since the 1960's, crane designers allowed and encouraged

Abstract Succession is a compositional change of species and other ecosystem characteristics over time. Mire development, i.e., long-term mire succession is basically driven by an increase in peat layer height, promoting changes in hydrology, vegetation and nutrient status of a particular mire. Due to this, ecosystem processes, such as production and loss of carbon due to decomposition (i.e. carbon gas functions), change with increasing successional mire stage. An adequate method for studying the changes in ecosystem C functions is to measure CO2 and CH4 fluxes between the ecosystem and atmosp

The present thesis focuses on two appealing paradigms that are expected to characterize the next generation of communication systems: microfluidic networking and Machine to Machine (M2M) Communications. Concerning the former topic, we show how it is possible to introduce switching and routing mechanism in microfluidic systems. We define some simple mathematical models that capture the macroscopic behavior of droplets in microfluidic networks. Then, we use them to implement a simulator that is able to reproduce the motion and predict the path of droplets in a generic microfluidic system. We val

In this study the two dimensional dynamic response of a Multi Degree of Freedom (MDOF) sliding isolated structure permitted to uplift is studied. The MDOF superstructure is supported by two sets of sliding bearings situated at both the ends of the base mat.
