Over the past decade, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have evolved into a hot interdisciplinary research area. WSNs are generally considered to be statically deployed, but in reality they are dynamic in nature due to a variety of characteristics including fluctuating wireless link quality and clock drift. Furthermore, new WSN topologies and applications have introduced more dynamics, such as time-varying power resources, data traffic patterns, and mobile sensing. These dynamics pose challenges to the theoretical understanding of WSN behaviours and the design of practical algorithms. This thesi

Since energy is a critical resource in WSNs, we consider energy minimization techniques based on explicit node cooperation and distributed source coding (DSC). The explicit node cooperation based on space time block codes (STBC) improves energy efficiency of WSNs, by reducing the energy consumption per bit of each sensor node. The DSC on the other hand exploits the spatial correlation in WSNs, and thus reduces the data generated in a WSN.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Work is focused on wireless sensor networks. The main theme is the mobility and localization in these networks. This work describes different methods and capabilities of mobile and localization schemes. This work describes a new localization protocol for wireless sensor networks. Finally, there is included a new protocol in the simulation at Network Simulator 2 and evaluate the results obtained.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Tese de doutoramento em Engenharia Civil<br>Structural dynamic monitoring is currently used in several areas of engineering such as the mechanical, aeronautical, and civil communities. While in the most of these areas, dynamic monitoring tests started to be used in the 1970s, in the civil engineering field these tools have been used mostly since the 1980s for studying high flexible structures such as bridges and tall buildings. The use of these tools for monitoring cultural heritage buildings started to be studied at the University of Minho only in the last decade due to the interest in
