Abstract:
This paper on doctoral supervision proposes how techniques used in coaching can contribute to a more adaptable supervisory style in which the reflective awareness of the positioning that emerges during the supervisory conversation can facilitate learning. Literature about doctoral supervision and supervisor development describes style as relatively static, yet the ‘good’ supervisor is expected to adapt her style to the needs of the supervisee. In this paper we frame supervisory style between supervisory philosophy and supervisory techniques. Then we present a positioning model from coaching, as a thinking tool to raise awareness about the positions one takes and gives in conversation, and which over time form the supervisory style.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to create a gateway between a Z-Wave device and a Bluetooth device. The gateway is supposed to make it possible for the company AES AB to sell and install a dynamic load balancer to their EV charger, even after it’s already been installed. The method that was used during this project was LIPS, where the project where divided into multiple subtargets. Each subtarget then had it’s own test which is shown in the results. The results for the overall project and not just the subtargets, are that a concept solution was created. The concept solution was able to forward the Z-Wave devices values to the Bluetooth device that was the target, but did so using a Raspberry Pi and a Z-Wave stick instead of a Z-Wave transceiver. The conclusion for the bachelor thesis is that the concept solution worked, and the demands of the assignment was fullfilled.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis has been to develop a tool for modelling and simulating the nuclear plant Ringhals 3. The model should be used to improve the knowledge on the dynamics of the plant. Ringhals 3 is being upgraded to produce more power and a tool for analyzing the new operating conditions is needed. The work in this thesis has consisted of improving and developing an existing model of Ringhals 3 made with the modelling tool Dymola. The model has been validated by comparing the results of a simulated house load transient with data from the actual plant. Validation shows good agreement with data from the real plant. However some differences in model and reality has been detected and has to be remembered when using the model for further analysis. After validation the input data of the model was updated for analyzing the new power level that will soon be implemented. The model was then used for simulating some interesting transients. The simulations show that Ringhals 3 with increased power production will most likely be able to perform a transition from full load to house load or one turbine load without causing a reactor trip even if the dump capacity is limited. If the dump capacity is entirely cut off a reactor trip would be actuated. Simulations also show that with new control settings the reactor can be run lower in coast down than what is made today and still manage a house load transient without tripping.

Abstract:
The Swedish company Thermia uses for its Air Conditioning and Heating Pumps systems scroll compressors from the American Manufacturer Copeland. Despite the substantial reduction of noise that these type of compressor present in comparison to the piston compressor they still have a sound pressure level of 56 dBA. This sound level is unacceptable for a domestic usage when placing the compressor in living areas like the kitchen. The company has great interest in reducing the sound levels of the equipment as a whole. This report presents a dynamical analysis of the possible causes of noise coming from the scroll compressor. It involves a deep study of the operation of the present model of scroll compressor and several proposals for improving the design. During the study, one of the main components of the system was discovered to be unbalanced. The so-called Oldham coupling oscillates with a double frequency the compressor rotates. The report presents a number of solutions based on the original design and minimizing the modifications on it. Mathematical explanation and rough designs are given for these suggestions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Underground mines are in constant development, expanding deeper into to the earth in search of minerals. This creates other challenges than electrical installations above ground where they are more permanent. Maintaining a good selectivity in the electrical grid when cables and plant components are constantly added or removed is one those challenges. As part of ABB's vision of "Smart Mine Power", New Boliden AB has shown their interest in modernizing the electrification components of Kankberg mine and to examine if it is possible, and what is needed, to introduce adaptive selectivity. A selectivity which is offering a greater ease and flexibility in the changing environment of the electrical grid in an underground mine. This report investigates Kankberg mines current electrical system and its conditions for introducing adaptive selectivity. A new single-line diagram is drawn for how a "vision mine" would look with an adaptive selectivity made possible. The proposed measure for the Kankberg mine 10 kV voltage level is the use of circuit breakers with connected numerical directional overcurrent relays on both sides of the electrical substation. Both of those relays are connected to an overhead computer system, in which an event table drawn up for the relay settings for all the mines operating cases. If a fault occurs or changes are made in the electrical system the operational case can quickly be changed so that selectivity continues to be up-to-date.

Abstract:
In line with today’s big focus on environmental and climate issues, energy efficiency has gained great traction in society. To survive this change and send correct signals to customers regarding what energy efficiency measures are preferred from a holistic view, a widespread trend among district heating companies to change their pricing models has started. The change is towards seasonal differentiation of energy prices and a higher portion of fixed fees. This report is, on behalf of Capital Cooling Energy Service AB (Capital Cooling), studying if that change is enough, or if temperature-based dynamic prices would be a safer and more correct way to price district heating. A general computational model is created in Excel to study the change for both a district heating company and its customers. This model is then used on a specific, anonymous district heating company to determine if the customer’s heat demand can be described with a temperature-based load profile, which is necessary if these pricing models are to work. After this a temperature distribution for each day during a normal year is calculated and the load profiles applied to calculate each customer’s daily demand for that year. This information is coupled with economic data for the district heating company to create the new, dynamic pricing models. These new pricing models can be compiled in four groups: existing, marginal cost-based, average cost-based and optimised price models. The different price models are tested together with the one the district heating company is using today in a tool provided by Capital Cooling, which computes the cost change for each customer and summarise this as the district heating company’s total income for this normal year. To test the stability of the price models, the same is done for an unusually cold and an unusually hot year. At last, incentives for energy efficiency measures are tested as cost savings for an exemplified customer. The results indicate that the current price models puts the studied company in economic risk during cold years. If a static energy price is used throughout the year the price signals sent to customers does not correlate well from a holistic viewpoint, but with a differentiated price model somewhat correct price signals are sent. By applying dynamic prices this can be improved even further, but all cases are very dependent on the company’s economic view of power reduction. The optimised price model indicates that a cross between marginal and average cost-based should be used to utilise their separate strengths and avoid their weaknesses. From both an environmental and a cost-based viewpoint, dynamic pricing models are suggested to be studied further for a future implementation in Swedish district heating grids.

Abstract:

This report describes how to create a dynamic and design driven web page for Landegrens Legomek AB, a minor company in the manufacturing business. The company had already recognized the need to update its former web page to a more modern design to keep up with the current trends on the Internet. Design and layout were adapted to the company’s profile and its customers, this to give the right impression of the company. The page was created with the database server MySQL together with the script language PHP. JavaScript is also a part of the implementation. We have also created an web interface for updating and managing the web page in an easy way. The work also included other parts beside the technical implementation, such as photography and copywriting.

The company has chosen to place its website in a web hotel, for this case Telia. The advantage with this solution is the security as well as the managing of the system. The disadvantage is the limits of the web hotel, e.g. the missing ftp support in PHP, which has forced us to choose other solutions.

Abstract:
Earth System Dynamic Intelligence (ESDI) entails developing and making innovative use of emerging concepts and pathways in mathematical geophysics, Earth System Dynamics, and information technologies to sense, monitor, harness, analyze, model and fundamentally unveil dynamic understanding across the natural, social and technical geosciences, including the associated manifold multiscale multidomain processes, interactions and complexity, along with the associated predictability and uncertainty dynamics. The ESDI Flagship initiative ignites the development, discussion and cross-fertilization of novel theoretical insights, methodological developments and geophysical applications across interdisciplinary mathematical, geophysical and information technological approaches towards a cross-cutting, mathematically sound, physically consistent, socially conscious and operationally effective Earth System Dynamic Intelligence. Going beyond the well established stochastic-dynamic, information-theoretic, artificial intelligence, mechanistic and hybrid techniques, ESDI paves the way to exploratory and disruptive developments along emerging information physical intelligence pathways, and bridges fundamental and operational complex problem solving across frontier natural, social and technical geosciences. Overall, the ESDI Flagship breeds a nascent field and community where methodological ingenuity and natural process understanding come together to shed light onto fundamental theoretical aspects to build innovative methodologies, products and services to tackle real-world challenges facing our planet.

Abstract:
This paper explores the core challenges and opportunities of the Europeanization processes taking place in Belarus and Armenia. It argues that despite the constraining effects of “competing governance provider” Russia, the interests, perceptions, and preferences of the domestic elites are critical to the implementation of the EU policies in Belarus and Armenia. Thus, it offers a more dynamic structure- agency interplay approach to account for the dynamics of Europeanization in the EU-Russia contested neighbourhood. The article enquires into integration without membership dynamics between the EU and Eastern neighbours in the light of the Russian-dominated Eurasian integration.

Full text
Abstract:
Causality and Predictability of Complex Systems pose fundamental challenges even under well-defined structural stochastic-dynamic conditions where the laws of motion and system symmetries are known. However, the edifice of complexity can be profoundly transformed by structural-functional coevolution and non-recurrent elusive mechanisms changing the very same invariants of motion that had been taken for granted. This leads to recurrence collapse and memory loss, precluding the ability of traditional stochastic-dynamic and information-theoretic metrics to provide reliable information about the non-recurrent emergence of fundamental new properties absent from the a priori kinematic geometric and statistical features. Unveiling causal mechanisms and eliciting system dynamic predictability under such challenging conditions is not only a fundamental problem in mathematical and statistical physics, but also one of critical importance to dynamic modelling, risk assessment and decision support e.g. regarding non-recurrent critical transitions and extreme events. In order to address these challenges, generalized metrics in non-ergodic information physics are hereby introduced for unveiling elusive dynamics, causality and predictability of complex dynamical systems undergoing far-from-equilibrium structural-functional coevolution. With these methodological developments at hand, hidden dynamic information is hereby brought out and explicitly quantified even beyond post-critical regime collapse, long after statistical information is lost. The added causal insights and operational predictive value are further highlighted by evaluating the new information metrics among statistically independent variables, where traditional techniques therefore find no information links. Notwithstanding the factorability of the distributions associated to the aforementioned independent variables, synergistic and redundant information are found to emerge from microphysical, event-scale codependencies in far-from-equilibrium nonlinear statistical mechanics. The findings are illustrated to shed light onto fundamental causal mechanisms and unveil elusive dynamic predictability of non-recurrent critical transitions and extreme events across multiscale hydro-climatic problems.
