The study deals with the dynastic marriages of the Angevin dynasty in Hungary during the fourteenth century. The dynastic marriages under analysis were made according to written and unwritten rules: the former was realized through the marriage contracts, and the latter covered customary elements regarding, for example, the consummation of marriage or the inspection of the bride. The marriage contracts regulated the logistics of a marriage, including, for instance, the delivery of the bride, the right of refusal of the marriage, the time of the nuptials, and details concerning property laws, wi

The article describes the marriage prohibitions in the Hasmonean state’s dynastic policy (II–I centuries BC). The Jewish rulers had a very strict approach in choosing a partner. The main criteria were ritual purity and good origin (by the Judaic norms), as well as belonging to the Jewish elite. During the last rulers of an independent state of the Hasmoneans (Aristobul II and Hyrkanus II) there was a transition to consanguineous marriages. One of the reasons is the influence of the Hellenistic tradition, in which such marriages are normal. In Judaism there are prohibitions on incest, but the H

The concern about the issue is explained by its limited historiography, since only a few unconnected works have tackled it to date. Furthermore, decent research efforts therein do imply the need for interdisciplinary and cross-civilizational/cross-cultural approaches. Goals. Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz frequently explores the relationship between Rus’ and Piast Poland in his work “Śpiewy historyczne”, specifically focusing on the conflicts between Bolesław I the Brave and Volodymyr I Sviatoslavych, as well as the subsequent tensions with Volodymyr’s son, Yaroslav the Wise. Niemcewicz draws extensively from medieval chronicles, which depict both historical and legendary events, some of which remain shrouded in mystery. In “Śpiewy historyczne”, there are vivid descriptions of medieval feuds, dynastic marriages, and territorial disputes, making Niemcewicz’s works essenti

The Silk Road in World History and China in World History are offerings in the New Oxford World History series. Among other objectives, the series aims to describe the lives of ordinary people. Readers will welcome the attention to commoners. Xinru Liu, author of The Silk Road in World History, uses letters from soldiers to good effect in revealing details of daily life. Liu also uses the contents of tombs to further inquiry into the lives of commoners. . In this article the author examines the development of the European diplomatic service during the Thirty Years' War, 1618–1648. There was no diplomatic post on the payroll of German princes in the seventeenth century, so it was left to court counsellors to represent the monarch on the foreign policy stage and gather relevant information from outside their dominions, which would influence the choice of international policies. A diplomatic career required a number of factors, among them ancestry, education, and breadth of vision. Practically all of the councillors who represented thei

The article focuses on the rapprochement between Byzantium and the Mongols from the 1250s which resulted in marriage alliances between Mongol Khans and Byzantine despoinas (princesses). The key issue is a clash of two different approaches. The Byzantine one was focused on the exclusive status of Byzantium as Christian Roman Empire, whose status was unrivalled and whose sovereigns seldom allowed marriages of Byzantine ladies to the foreign rulers, especially if the latter were heathen or Muslim. The Mongol view considered the Mongol state as the only one destined to dominate over other states.

It should be noted that among the Romanovs who entered into a morganatic marriage, there were heirs to the Russian throne. Crying Marriage is a special ritual of the Tujia family in the west of Hunan province, China. The reason why the Crying Marriage appeared so is that Tujia women lost their rights to marriage. The emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasty abolished local governments and dispatched officials from the capital to govern local people. Then, local people in different areas of China started to adapt the traditions of Han culture (the mainstream culture in China). In this case, since Han culture advocated arranged marriage, Tujia parents also started to arrange their daughters' marriages. Tujia women lost
