Abstract:

Levothyroxine suppression therapy (LST) can cause some unfavorable effects on the cardiovascular system in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). The aim of this study was to evaluate ventricular arrhythmia predictors based on electrocardiography (ECG) in patients with DTC with LST. The ECG parameters including QT, corrected QT (QTc), Tp-e intervals, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTC ratios of 265 patients with DTC who met the inclusion criteria were compared with 100 controls. No difference was observed in the number of patients with DTC and controls with prolonged and borderline QTc interval ( P = .273). Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc ratios were significantly higher in patients ( P = .002, P = .02, P = .003; respectively). Linear regression analysis suggested that male gender was a predictor of higher Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc ratios (β = 4.322, R 2 = 0.024, P = .042; β = 0.016, R 2 = 0.048, P = .005; β = 0.015, R 2 = 0.044, P = .006, respectively). A higher serum fT4 level was found to be associated with a higher Tp-e/QT ratio (β = 0.018, R 2 = 0.089, P = .007). Ventricular arrhythmia indicators were found to be higher in patients with DTC with LST. Defining ventricular arrhythmia predictors through ECG, an easily accessible cardiac diagnostic tool, can be potentially useful in raising awareness of the possible cardiac harm of LST.

Abstract:

Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados do mapeamento geológico na escala 1:50.000 de uma área de 100 km2 na Bacia de Jatobá, ao norte do município de Inajá, interior do estado de Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil. As unidades estratigráficas possuem grande similaridade litológica, demandando a realização de estudos detalhados para sua distinção. As análises petrográficas permitiram o acompanhamento das transições litológicas e granulométricas dos sistemas deposicionais que configuram as fases sinéclise, início e clímax de rifte. Os estudos bioestratigráficos possibilitaram a identificação de seis biozonas de ostracodes para a bacia estudada: RT-001 (Formação Aliança), RT-003 (Formação Candeias) e RT-004 a RT-007 (Grupo Ilhas), determinando o posicionamento biocronoestratigráfico das unidades com base em ostracodes não-marinhos nos andares Dom João (Tithoniano), Rio da Serra (Berriasiano-Hauteriviano), Aratu (Hauteriviano-Eobarremiano) e Buracica (Barremiano). Os dados obtidos resultaram na atualização da carta estratigráfica da Bacia de Jatobá.

Abstract:

Purpose Long-term survivors of childhood Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at risk for cardiopulmonary complications and CNS stroke, although neurocognitive function has not been previously examined. The aim of this study was to examine neurocognitive and brain imaging outcomes in adult survivors of childhood HL. Patients and Methods In all, 62 adult survivors (mean age, 42.2 years; standard deviation [SD], 4.77; mean age at diagnosis, 15.1 years; SD, 3.30) were identified by stratified random selection from a large cohort treated with either high-dose (≥ 30 Gy) thoracic radiation (n = 38) or lower-dose (< 30 Gy) thoracic radiation combined with anthracycline (n = 24). Patients underwent neurocognitive evaluations, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), echocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, and physical examinations. Results Compared with national age-adjusted norms, HL survivors demonstrated lower performance on sustained attention (P = .004), short-term memory (P = .001), long-term memory (P = .006), working memory (P < .001), naming speed (P < .001), and cognitive fluency (P = .007). MRI revealed leukoencephalopathy in 53% of survivors, and 37% had evidence of cerebrovascular injury. Higher thoracic radiation dose was associated with impaired cardiac diastolic function (E/E′; ratio of peak mitral flow velocity of early rapid filling [E] to early diastolic velocity of the mitral annulus [E′]; P = .003), impaired pulmonary function (diffusing capacity of lungs for carbon monoxide [DLcocorr; P = .04), and leukoencephalopathy (P = .02). Survivors with leukoencephalopathy demonstrated reduced cognitive fluency (P = .001). Working memory impairment was associated with E/E′, although impaired sustained attention and naming speed were associated with DLcocorr. Neurocognitive performance was associated with academic and vocational functioning. Conclusion These results suggest that adult long-term survivors of childhood HL are at risk for neurocognitive impairment, which is associated with radiologic indices suggestive of reduced brain integrity and which occurs in the presence of symptoms of cardiopulmonary dysfunction.

Abstract:

P-selectin, E-selectin, and mean platelet volume are markers associated with platelet reactivity that have been demonstrated to be increased in diabetes. We were particularly interested to see if there was a difference in mean platelet volume and selectins between diabetics and nondiabetics, and in diabetics with and without nephropathy, and whether there was a correlation between mean platelet volume and selectins. One hundred and fourteen diabetic patients and 31 healthy controls were investigated. Plasma levels of P-selectin and E-selectin were higher in the diabetic group than in controls ( P = .001 and P = .007, respectively) and in diabetic patients with proteinuria than in patients without proteinuria ( P = .002 and P = .004, respectively). Protein excretion was lower in patients with low mean platelet volume values ( P = .004). In conclusion, elevated platelet volume and high selectin values may play a role in the development of vasculopathies and complications in diabetes mellitus. Further studies are needed to prove these results.

Objectives.To compare risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes in patients withEnterococcus avium,Enterococcus casseliflavus,Enterococcus durans,Enterococcus gallinarum, andEnterococcus mundtiibacteremia (cases) with those in patients withEnterococcus faecalisbacteremia (controls).Design.A retrospective case-control study.Setting.A 725-bed, university-affiliated, academic medical center.Patients.The clinical microbiology database at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from January 1994 to May 2003 was searched to identify cases; each case was matched to one control on the basis of date of admission.Results.Thirty-three cases were identified and matched with 33 controls. The mean duration of hospital stay was longer (29.7 vs 17.2 days;P= .03) and the mean time to acquisition of bacteremia was greater (16.5 vs 6.3 days;P= .003) for cases than controls. Cases were more likely to have underlying hematologic malignancies (P< .001), to have been treated with corticosteroids (P= .02), and to be neutropenic (P= .003). Controls were more likely to have an indwelling bladder catheter (P= .01), and cases were more likely to have the gastrointestinal tract as a source of infection (P= .007) and to have concurrent cholangitis (P= .002). There were no differences in severity of illness or in mortality rates.Conclusions.Compared with patients withE. faecalisbacteremia, patients with non-E. faecalis, non-Enterococcus faeciumenterococcal bacteremia were more likely to have a hematologic malignancy, prior treatment with corticosteroids, neutropenia, and cholangitis; longer duration of hospital stay was also identified as a clinical feature. However, non-E. faecalis, non-E. faeciumspecies are not associated with any differences in mortality.

Abstract:

Fueron estudiados los factores socioculturales que podrían estar influyendo en el desarrollo psicomotor normal del lactante desnutrido. La muestra consistió en 32 díadas madrelactante: 16 tenían CD normal (Grupo A) y 16 CD bajo lo normal (Grupo B) según el Test de Bailey aplicado a los lactantes recién ingresados a un Centro de Recuperación Nutricional. Los resultados muestran que había algunas diferencias en los antecedentes de los lactantes: Los lactantes del Grupo A eran producto de un embarazo deseado (p<.05), y fueron menos separados del lado de su madre (p<.007) que aquellos del Grupo B. No se encontraron diferencias en los antecedentes socioculturales y demográficos de las madres. El medio externo de los lactantes fue diferente en los aspectos observados en el barrio: hubo menos aspectos negativos en el Grupo A que en los del B (p<.001). El medio interno de los lactantes, también fue diferente en lo relacionado con la madre. Madres del Grupo A percibían más afección por parte de su pareja (p<.008), eran más sensitivas (sentimientos de alegría y de sufrimientos) (p<.003) y estimulaban más a su hijo (p<.004) que aquellas del Grupo B. Estos resultados muestran que el medio externo e interno en el cuál se desenvolvían los lactantes con CD normal y CD bajo lo normal eran diferentes. Esto podría dar cuenta de las diferencias en el desarrollo psicomotor entre lactantes desnutridos pertenecientes a un bajo estrato socioeconómico.

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the impact of a 6-month participatory and empowerment-based intervention study on employees’ dietary habits and on changes in the canteen nutrition environment.DesignWorksites were stratified by company type and by the presence or absence of an in-house canteen, and randomly allocated to either an intervention group (five worksites) or a minimum intervention control group (three worksites). The study was carried out in partnership with a trade union and guided by an ecological framework targeting both individual and environment levels. Outcome measures included: (i) changes in employees’ dietary habits derived from 4 d pre-coded food diaries of a group of employees at the worksites (paired-data structure); and (ii) the canteen nutrition environment as identified by aggregating chemical nutritional analysis of individual canteen lunches (different participants at baseline and at endpoint).SettingEight blue-collar worksites (five of these with canteens).SubjectsEmployees.ResultsIn the intervention group (n102), several significant positive nutritional effects were observed among employees, including a median daily decrease in intake of fat (−2·2 %E,P= 0·002) and cake and sweets (−18 g/10 MJ,P= 0·002) and a median increase in intake of dietary fibre (3 g/10 MJ,P< 0·001) and fruit (55 g/d,P= 0·007 and 74 g/10 MJ,P= 0·009). With regard to the canteen nutrition environment, a significant reduction in the percentage of energy obtained from fat was found in the intervention group (median difference 11 %E,P< 0·001,n144).ConclusionsThe present study shows that moderate positive changes in dietary patterns can be achieved among employees in blue-collar worksites.

Abstract:

O centro de origem do mamoeiro é, muito provavelmente, o Noroeste da América do Sul - vertente oriental dos Andes, mais precisamente a Bacia Amazônica Superior - onde a diversidade genética é máxima, o que o caracteriza como uma planta tipicamente tropical. Embora o Brasil seja o maior produtor mundial, toda a área de produção comercial é implantada quase que exclusivamente com dois grupos de cultivares, Havaí e Formosa, evidenciando uma base genética muito estreita. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar linhagens e híbridos adaptados às condições edafoclimáticas das principais regiões produtoras, com ênfase para resistência a doenças, procedendo avaliação agronômica dos principais genótipos promissores de mamão, a fim de identificar aqueles mais adaptados a diferentes agroecossistemas do País. Os acessos do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma de Mamão apresentaram grande variabilidade genética para os caracteres peso, comprimento e diâmetro de frutos, passível de ser explorada em programas de melhoramento genético. A análise de planta híbrida em relação aos parentais indica a possibilidade de modificações genéticas de caracteres comercialmente importantes, a exemplo de altura de inserção da primeira flor funcional, altura da planta, ocorrência de carpeloidia e peso de frutos. Em adição, a partir de avaliações compreendendo 125 acessos do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma de Mamão (BAG-Mamão) da Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura, observou-se que, em relação à Phytophthora spp. os acessos CMF 001, CMF 053, CMF 062, CMF 081, e CMF 089 são moderadamente tolerantes, e os acessos CMF 002, CMF 007, CMF 033, CMF 060, CMF 065, CMF 070, CMF 071, CMF 083 e CMF 101 apresentam nível maior de tolerância. Estes acessos estão sendo utilizados em trabalhos de melhoramento genético, visando à obtenção de linhagens resistentes e/ou tolerantes ao fungo.

Abstract:

Com o objetivo de verificar a relação entre algumas atitudes de profissionais de saúde frente à AIDS e sua percepção a respeito do controle que exercem sobre as condições do atendimento, foram desenvolvidas escalas de atitude e aplicadas em 83 sujeitos, verificando-se, posteriormente, o Locus de Controle sobre a situação em que o paciente HIV é atendido. Tomando, como referencial teórico, o modelo de atitude de Fishbein-Azjen (1975) e o conceito de Locus de Controle, tal como proposto por Levenson (1973), que considera controles localizados na internalidade, externalidade e teleologia, foram realizados estudos diferenciais entre profissionais ealunos de enfermagem, considerando-se atividade e escolaridade como variáveis determinantes. Estudos de diferença de médias, entre subgrupos definidos pela atividade, apontaram, nos profissionais, maiores índices de Internalidade (T=2.76; p=.007), com propensões mais negativas frente ao Embaraço (T=–2.76; p=.009) e menos negativas frente ao Estigma (T=–3.73; p<.001). Com relação aos profissionais de nível universitário, foram verificadas propensões menos positivas frente ao Suporte (T=–2.06; p=.04). Considerando o total de profissionais, foram encontradas correlações significantes entre Internalidade e Estigma (r=–.30) e Teleologia e Embaraço (r=–.31). Para os universitários como um todo, atitudes frente ao Suporte apresentaram correlações significantes com Externalidade (r=+.41) e Teleologia (r=+.26). Confirmando a literatura, para os profissionais não-universitários, prevalece uma tendência para avaliar mais positivamente o Suporte dado ao paciente, determinado por crenças teleológicas. Entre os profissionais, em geral, a Internalidade parece influenciar avaliações mais negativas sobre o Estigma do paciente HIV.

Abstract:

We measured the urinary excretion of Isoprostane F2-III and Isoprostane-F2-VI, two markers of in vivo lipid peroxidation, and the circulating levels of the prothrombin fragment F1+2, a marker of thrombin generation, in 18 antiphospholipid antibodies-positive patients, in 18 antiphospholipid antibodies-negative patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, and in 20 healthy subjects. Furthermore, 12 patients positive for antiphospholipid antibodies were treated with (n = 7) or without (n = 5) antioxidant vitamins (vitamin E at 900 IU/d and vitamin C at 2,000 mg/d) for 4 weeks. Compared with antiphospholipid antibodies-negative patients, antiphospholipid antibodies-positive patients had higher urinary values of Isoprostane-F2-III (P = .0001), Isoprostane-F2-VI (P = .006), and plasma levels of the prothrombin fragment F1+2 (P= .0001). In antiphospholipid-positive patients, F1+2 significantly correlated with Isoprostane-F2-III (Rho = .56,P = .017) and Isoprostane-F2-VI (Rho = .61, P = .008). After 4 weeks of supplementation with antioxidant vitamins, we found a significant decrease in F1+2 levels (P < .005) concomitantly with a significant reduction of both Isoprostane-F2-III (P = .007) and Isoprostane-F2-VI (P < .005). No change of these variables was observed in patients not receiving antioxidant treatment. This study suggests that lipid peroxidation might contribute to the activation of clotting system in patients positive for antiphospholipid antibodies.

Abstract:

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de clones de batata-doce cultivados em diferentes períodos. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com três repetições. Foram testados nas parcelas três períodos de cultivo (3, 5 e 7 meses), e nas subparcelas, cinco clones de batata-doce (acessos IBP-007, IBP-038, IBP-075, IBP-079 e IBP-149), e a cultivar comercial Brazlândia Rosada. As variáveis analisadas foram sobrevivência, danos causados por insetos de solos (notas de 1 a 5 onde 1= sem danos e 5= muitos danos, sem valor comercial), massa fresca e seca de parte aérea, produtividade total de raízes. Os maiores danos causados por insetos de solo observou-se no clone IBP-007 (4,29), e menores danos nos clones IPB-038 (2,84), IPB-075 (3,01) e IPB-149 (2,88), que apresentaram resistência no cultivo durante sete meses. O clone IPB-007 apresentou elevados valores de massa fresca (14,07 t/ha) e seca (2,81 t/ha) de parte aérea, em todos periodos de cultivo, apresentando também, alta produtividade de raizes (33,16 t/ha). Recomenda-se cultivar a batata doce durante um período de cinco meses.

Abstract:

Ora-pró-nobis (Pereskia aculeata Miller), é uma hortaliça não convencional que possui importante qualidade quanto ao teor de proteínas, mas não está acrescida na alimentação das pessoas no dia a dia. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi elaborar e avaliar, sensorialmente, dez produtos à base de ora-pró-nobis, sendo cinco da área salgada (arroz, macarrão, frango, pão e polenta) e cinco da área doce (bolo de chocolate, brigadeiro, bolo tradicional, pudim e sorvete). A pesquisa foi realizada no Laboratório de processamento da Universidade Estadual de Goiás, Câmpus Jataí. A avaliação sensorial contou com a participação de 80 julgadores não-treinados, alunos da Universidade. Foram utilizados dois testes durante a pesquisa: escala hedônica (notas 1 a 9) e a aceitação das características do produto (cor, aroma, sabor e textura). Observou-se, na análise sensorial, através da escala hedônica e das características que as amostra 001, 002, 003, 005, A, B, C e D, foram mais aceita pelos julgadores, enquanto as amostras 004 e E, tiveram um índice de aceitabilidade menor. Contudo, dentre as dez amostras apenas a amostra 004, não atingiu o índice de aceitabilidade maior que 70%, o que leva a ser a única amostra inviável para comercialização.

In the present study, the effects of an increased daily dose of a dietary supplement (ATP-E, 0.2 g ··) on Wingate test performance were examined in 12 men (21 ± 1.6 years) prior to and following 14 days of supplement and placebo ingestion. A double-blind and counterbalanced design was used. Results revealed higher (p< .007) preexercise blood ATP (95.4 ± 10.5 μmol ·) for the entire group following 14 days of ATP-E ingestion compared to placebo measures (87.6 ± 10.9 μmol ·). Mean power (667 ± 73 W) was higher (p< .008) after 14 days of ATP-E ingestion versus placebo (619 ± 67 W). Peak plasma lactate was lower (p< .07) after 14 days of ATP-E ingestion (14.9 ± 2.8 mmol ·) compared to placebo (16.3 ± 1.6 mmol ·). These data suggested that the improvement in 30-s Wingate test performance in this group may be related to the increased dose of ATP-E.

Esta investigación descriptiva transversal estudia la relación de la situación de fragilidad en adultos mayores y la existencia o no de dependencia para las actividades de la vida diaria divididas en básicas e instrumentales con una muestra de 194 personas mayores institucionalizadas. La fragilidad se mide con la herramienta Short Physical Performance Battery, las actividades básicas de la vida diaria mediante el Índice de Barthel y las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria con la escala de Lawton y Brody.Los resultados descriptivos muestran como las medias obtenidas en ambas actividades de la vida diaria disminuyen según el continumm robusto-prefrágil-frágil-dependiente avanza hacia la dependencia. Las diferencias en todas las subescalas de la Short Phisical Performance Battery son significativas, al igual que en Barthel y Lawton y Brody (p<,001). En relación al Barthel y los grupos del SPPB se encuentra que todos los grupos obtienen diferencias significativas entre sí (,007>p>,001) excepto en la relación robusto-frágil, en el que las diferencias no son significativas. En cuanto Lawton y Brody las diferencias son significativas (,041>p>,001); exceptuando el caso de los grupos frágil y prefrágil.Las diferencias encontradas entre los grupos permiten un diagnóstico precoz e intervencionesencaminadas a la prevenir o revertir el avance hacia una situación de dependencia.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar biologi siswa kelas VI SDN 007 Kotabaru Tahun Ajaran 2017/2018 dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 5 E. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 22 November 2017 sampai 02 Januari 2018. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VI SDN 007 Kotabaru yang berjumlah 20 orang siswa, terdiri dari 10 orang siswa laki-laki dan 10 orang siswa perempuan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Pengolahan data menggunakan tes hasil belajar. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah teknik analisis deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran hasil belajar siswa dengan menggunakan Learning Cycle 5 E. Analisis deskriptif tentang hasil belajar siswa yang dilakukan sebanyak 2 siklus terdiri atas 6 kali pertemuan tatap muka dan 2 kali pertemuan digunakan untuk ujian blok. Diperoleh data ketuntasan klasikal siswa sebelum PTK adalah 70%, dan mengalami peningkatan sebesar 25% menjadi 95 % pada siklus I dan pada siklus II kembali mengalami peningkatan sebesar 5% menjadi 100%. Ketuntasan nilai KI sebelum PTK 70 %, pada siklus I meningkat sebesar 25% menjadi 95%, dan pada siklus II mengalami peningkatan sebesar 5% menjadi 100%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan pembelajaran Learning Cycle dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar IPA siswa kelas VI SDN 007 Kotabaru.

Abstract:

Background: There is a medial bulging of the lateral nasal wall in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Aims: Uncinate process (UP) angulation measurements in patients and controls to objectify this bulging. Materials and Methods: Thirty CF, 17 primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), 13 chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (CRSwp), and 30 controls were included. Angles were measured bilaterally on computed tomography (CT) scans: A, B, C on coronal sections, D and E on axial sections. Angle A was between the UP and the orbit inner wall, whereas the others were between UP and midline. Results: There was no significant difference between controls, PCD, and CRSwp. However, CF had 3 statistically different angles with controls, 5 with CRSwp, and 4 with PCD. Angle A average value was 126° (±16°) in patients with CF, 138° (±19°) in controls ( P = .007), 145° (±15°) in PCD ( P = .001), and 138° (±14°) in CRSwp ( P = .001). Angle E average value was 35° (±10°) in patients with CF, 20° (±6°) in controls ( P < .001), 21° (±4°) in PCD ( P < .001), and 22° (±6°) in CRSwp ( P < .001). Conclusion: Uncinate process’s anatomy is only modified in CF: Angle between UP and inner wall of orbit is closed, and angles between UP and midline are opened. Significance: These measures quantify the medial bulging of lateral nasal wall and support nasofibroscopic observations.
