Full textThe accelerating growth of e-business and technologies has raised the interest in transforming traditional business models or developing new ones. Most of the e-business model research has been devoted to giving taxonomies of e-business models. Though defining e-business model and decomposing it into atomic elements traditionally has been a task for researchers, the concepts surrounding them have been subject to debate lately. While there is an extensive research conducted towards identifying and analyzing key components in e-business models, limited research has been noted in identifying component values or factors and the interconnections between components. In this thesis we review the e-business models literature using literature study in order to give an overview of e-business model definitions, identify the component values and interconnections between components and finally a framework provided that shows all these components, values and interconnections.

Full textPurpose: To analyze any differences in the orthodontic treatment between a group of children with special health care needs (SHCN) and a group of children not diagnosed with SHCN. Materials and Methods: The study sample (SHCN) consisted of 50 orthodontically treated children with SHCN. The control group (NO SHCN) consisted of 50 orthodontically treated children not diagnosed with SHCN fully matched for age, gender and type of appliance used with patients of the study sample. The differences between the SHCN and NO SHCN groups were analyzed retrospectively: - pre-, post-treatment scores and score reduction of the Peer Assessment Rating index (PAR), the Dental Health (DHC) and Aesthetic (AC) Components of the Orthodontic Treatment Need Index (IOTN), - number of appointments, - number of simple or complex chair time appointments, - overall treatment time, - age at treatment start and end. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for the number of appointments, overall treatment time, age at treatment start and end (p values: 0.682, 0.458, 0.535 and 0.675). There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in PAR, DHC, AC pre- and post-treatment, and the number of simple and complex chair time appointments (p values: 0.030, 0.000, 0.020, 0.023, 0.000, 0.000, 0.043 and 0.037). The reductions of PAR, DHC and AC scores were not significantly different between the two groups (p values: 0.060, 0.765 and 0.825). Conclusions: This study, while reporting a greater number of complex chair time appointments during the orthodontic treatment of children with special health care needs, encourages orthodontists to implement the treatment of patients with SHCN, in an attempt to improve their quality of life.

A amostra estudada inclui 207 alunos, 107 do género feminino e 100 do género masculino. The malocclusion is considered a public health problem, both for its epidemiology as the ability to be prevented and treated. In order to assess the prevalence and severity of malocclusion in children of school age, in primary / permanent dentition, of the age groups between 6-7 years, 9-10 years, 12-13 years and 15-16 years in the municipality of Alijó, Portugal, an epidemiologic study was carried out. During the study, sociodemographic information (education, age, gender) and characteristics of the oral cavity were collected through questioning and clinical examination. On clinical examination the following characteristics were observed on the examined students: relation of molars, overjet and overbite, anterior, posterior unilateral or bilateral crossbite, spacing, crowding, tooth irregularity, midline shift, analietion of the Aesthetic Component of IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). The sample was composed of 207 students, out of whom 107 were females and 100 were males. The results which stood out in relation to malocclusions observed were: the mandibular crowding present in 40,1% of the cases; the maxillary spacing in 40,6% of the cases; midline spacing in 20,8% of the cases; maxillary irregularity in 38,6% of the cases; increased overjet 39,7% of the cases; overbite was the second most prevalent malocclusion with 56% observation; open and cross bites were of little relevance; Class I was relation of molars the most prevalent with 68, 1% of the cases; midline shift inferior was found in approximately 23%of the cases. The analysis of the self-perception of smile in the majority (78.2%) of the students had Grade 1-2 according to the Aesthetic Component of IOTN. As to the satisfaction with the smile, most were satisfied (46,3%) or very satisfied (38,2%) with their smile. Similarly, most students believe that they rather do not need orthodontic treatment (32,8%) or definitively not require any orthodontic treatment (20,2%). The most frequently observed malocclusions are Class I and overbite. A high prevalence of malocclusions was observed in the population of students of Alijó examined for the purpose of the research, yet with a relatively high level of oral aesthetic self-satisfaction. In conclusion, it seems that it would be important to analyse the oral conditions of children at school age in order to diagnose at an early stage cases, which could be prevented and / or treated.

Full textAn investigation about how aspect oriented programming combined with the components technology can encapsulate the crosscuting concerns of a system is presented. As result of this research, a method for the aspect and component based software development is proposed, whose phases, activities and designs elements are shown by means of an example of a Hotel Reservation System, with its implementation in the JAsCO and AspectJ languages. The method is an extension of the UML Components method and uses UML with some adaptations. Moreover, a strategy to the generalization and documentation of crosscutting (or aspectual) components to be reused in other applications is proposed. Additionally, the proposed method was used to design a Car Rental System and the result was compared with another solution for the same problem, based on UML Components and a general architecture for Web systems. The results of the comparation are presented and discussed.

Full textRedundancy is an old issue in data compression research. Compression methods that use statistics have been heavily influenced by neuroscience research. In this work, we propose an image compression system based on the efficient coding concept derived from neural information processing models. The system performance is compared with discrete cosine transform (DCT) and principal components analysis (PCA) results at several compression ratios (CR). Evaluation through both objective measurements and visual inspection showed that the proposed system is more robust to distortions such as blocking artifacts than DCT and PCA.

Full textTasks involving Pattern Recognition are becoming more frequent in many applications. Most of these tasks have been efficiently handled by Artificial Neural Networks. One of the most common models used is the MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron), though its performance is directly dependent on the chosen topology, which it must be set in the beginning of the training process. The choice of a Neural Network topology is not trivial, and usually becomes an exhaustive search for the most appropriate configuration. Several methods have been developed to automatically find a suitable Neural Network topology, including Constructive Neural Networks. These networks are trained by Constructive Algorithms which, starting from a minimal topology, gradually insert new neurons and connections, aming to improve the network\'s performance. Nevertheless, the evaluation of the best use of such algorithms in a given task depends on the homogeneity of the training environment. This work provides the definition of a set of abstract classes which allow different training algorithms, including Constructive Algorithms, to be built as components with strictly defined access in order to be used in different applications. By using these components in a new version of the Kipu Neural Network Simulator, it is possible to begin analyzing the efficiency of Constructive Neural Networks in real Pattern Recognition tasks.
