Abstract:
The deformation of a weakly conducting, ‘leaky dielectric’, drop in a density matched, immiscible weakly conducting medium under a uniform direct current (DC) electric field is quantified computationally. We exclusively consider prolate drops, for which the drop elongates in the direction of the applied field. Furthermore, for the majority of this study, we assume the drop and medium to have equal viscosities. Using axisymmetric boundary integral computations, we delineate drop deformation and breakup regimes in the $Ca_{E}-Re_{E}$ parameter space, where $Ca_{E}$ is the electric capillary number (ratio of the electric to capillary stresses); and $Re_{E}$ is the electric Reynolds number (ratio of charge relaxation to flow time scales), which characterizes the strength of surface charge convection along the interface. For so-called ‘prolate A’ drops, where the surface charge is convected towards the ‘poles’ of the drop, we demonstrate that increasing $Re_{E}$ reduces the critical capillary number for breakup. Moreover, surface charge convection is the cause of an abrupt transition in the breakup mode of a drop from end pinching, where the drop elongates and develops bulbs at its ends that eventually detach, to a breakup mode characterized by the formation of conical ends. On the contrary, the deformation of ‘prolate B’ drops, where the surface charge is convected away from the poles, is essentially unaffected by the magnitude of $Re_{E}$.

Abstract:
As customer demand for green products increases in the digital economic era, this study analyses the green innovation of the e-tailer and supplier in drop shipping models. Moreover, drop shipping e-tailers and suppliers with a drop shipping option need to make choices regarding whether to provide green or normal products to the market. When a supplier with a drop shipping option produces green products, more fees may be invested in the production of green products than on normal products. The drop shipping e-tailers and suppliers with a drop shipping option can also choose to sell normal products at a low cost, as before. This study designs four models of drop shipping e-tailers and suppliers with a drop shipping option under different choices, analyzes their operational process in drop shipping models, and investigates five theorems. The optimal pricing decisions and green degree of drop shipping e-tailers and suppliers with a drop shipping option were evaluated in this study. The impacts of the green innovation factor, green elasticity coefficient, manufacturing and distribution costs on the drop shipping e-tailers and suppliers with a drop shipping option, and the effect of other environmental parameters on the green degree of green products are also analyzed through computer simulation. The findings of the simulation analysis provide valuable guidance for e-tailers and suppliers with green innovation in drop shipping models and offer important academic and practical implications for e-commerce and the digital economy.

Abstract:
Drop shipping represents a delivery business model based on e-commerce logistics, which is very relevant in the global pandemic crisis. In this model, buyers order products and services directly from the manufacturer over the Internet through the intermediary of a drop shipper who ensures the easiest and fastest delivery. Drop shipper is a type of e-commerce entrepreneur that offers goods using online logistics infrastructure to ensure direct physical delivery from the manufacturer to the retailer or customer. This includes drop shipping as a business model to Industry 4.0 (i.e. the digital economy). This paper elaborates how a particular e-commerce model affects the development and improvement of global supply chains. Aim of this paper is to research how entrepreneur can lower its costs along drop shipping supply chain by managing inventory ratios or cost of stock. This enables drop shipping to greatly facilitate market access for cash-strapped entrepreneurs. We also conducted a simulation of optimized drop shipping process to show that there is a constant adaptability for entrepreneurs using drop shipping, especially among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The timeliness of drop shipping is that it has facilitated as a global delivery solution in relation to the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19). Moreover, drop shipping is based on a Activity-Based Costing (ABC model) whose quantitative efficiency has been proven by scientific analysis and research results. Finally, the legal aspects of drop shipping are given importance in the situation of COVID-19 which had a crucial impact on international trade in 2020, especially in predicting short-term trade trends. Due to this within this paper we also examined the effects of the ˝coronavirus˝ on global e-commerce. Global drop shipping data ensures qualitative predictions considering pandemic environment, social distancing issues and internet trade curves which are more than useful in today’s changing business conditions.

Abstract:
In this theoretical report we explore the deformation and stability of a power-law non-Newtonian slender drop embedded in a Newtonian liquid undergoing a nonlinear extensional creeping flow. The dimensionless parameters describing this problem are: the capillary number $(Ca\gg 1)$, the viscosity ratio $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}\ll 1)$, the power-law index $(n)$ and the nonlinear intensity of the flow $(|E|\ll 1)$. Asymptotic analytical solutions were obtained near the centre and close to the end of the drop suggesting that only Newtonian and shear thinning drops $(n\leqslant 1)$ with pointed ends are possible. We described the shape of the drop as a series expansion about the centre of the drop, and performed a stability analysis in order to distinguish between stable and unstable stationary states and to establish the breakup point. Our findings suggest: (i) shear thinning drops are less elongated than Newtonian drops, (ii) as non-Newtonian effects increase or as $n$ decreases, breakup becomes more difficult, and (iii) as the flow becomes more nonlinear, breakup is facilitated.

Abstract:
Abstract Joint size and fall velocity distributions of raindrops were measured with a Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL) precipitation particle disdrometer in a field experiment conducted during July and August 2007 at a semiarid continental site located in Guyuan, Ningxia Province, China (36°N, 106°16′E). Data from both stratiform and convective clouds are analyzed. Comparison of the observed raindrop size distributions shows that the increase of convective rain rates arises from the increases of both drop concentration and drop diameter while the increase of the rain rate in the stratiform clouds is mainly due to the increase of median and large drop concentration. Another striking contrast between the stratiform and convective rains is that the size distributions from the stratiform (convective) rains tend to narrow (broaden) with increasing rain rates. Statistical analysis of the distribution pattern shows that the observed size distributions from both rain types can be well described by the gamma distribution. Examination of the raindrop fall velocity reveals that the difference in air density leads to a systematic change in the drop fall velocity while organized air motions (updrafts and downdrafts), turbulence, drop breakup, and coalescence likely cause the large spread of drop fall velocity, along with additional systematic deviation from terminal velocity at certain raindrop diameters. Small (large) drops tend to have superterminal (subterminal) velocities statistically, with the positive deviation from the terminal velocity of small drops being much larger than the negative deviation of large drops.

Abstract:
The motion and particularly the detachment mechanism of sessile drops in an air-shear-flow is highly relevant for many technical applications. For instance, water drops in fuel cells can block the oxygen transport and thus lower the overall efficiency. Hence, a deeper understanding of the drop detachment mechanism could facilitate efficiency optimisations. Nonetheless, until now only simplified models exist for predicting the critical velocity that do not take into account the mutual interaction of the air and the liquid via the non-rigid interface. One reason for this is the lack of knowledge of the flow inside the oscillating drop. In this contribution, we present the first three-dimensional flow measurements in oscillating sessile drops in shear flow. Time-averaged flow measurements were conducted for different Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the phase-averaged flow field was measured. The measurements were conducted with a novel 3D-PTV method, which offers scanless three-dimensional flow measurements with a single optical access for a measurement volume that covers about 90 % of the drop volume. Moreover, we present a novel technique for conducting flow measurements through fluctuating gas-liquid interfaces based on adaptive optics. We demonstrate that this technique enables the correction of a systematic error corresponding to the magnitude of the first drop eigenfrequency, which seems to play an important role in the detachment mechanism of drops. The results give new insights about the fluid mechanics of sessile drops and thus may help in the optimisation of drop removal in e. g. fuel cells.

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Eng. in Logistics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Supply Chain Management Program, 2016.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 55-57).
Manufacturers and retailers are increasingly interested in exploring different ways to optimize their fulfillment of e-Commerce orders. An approach that is often considered is drop-shipping, where the manufacturer takes on the responsibility of shipping directly to the consumer. Retailers are interested in this model as it shifts their inventory responsibility upstream and frees up working capital. Manufacturers are intrigued by drop shipping as a means of capturing lost sales on high-value, seasonal products that retailers might be under-stocking. These manufacturers currently lack the retailer-side inventory availability information to assess the extent of this opportunity. We propose a framework to show manufacturers and retailers how to examine the key issues of drop shipping such as capacity constraints, per unit distribution cost, changes in working capital, cost allocations in the supply chain and delivery time to customers. We also explore how to bridge information gaps to gauge inventory availability and lost sales using Web Extraction System data. We demonstrate our framework by partnering with a CPG manufacturer interested in implementing drop-shipping. Using their data from an existing facility and a selected retailer, we simulate drop shipping orders for a specific set of products during the holiday season that are normally fulfilled by the retailer. Firstly we show that in this scenario, the manufacturer will not exceed their current facility's capacity and will require minimal changes to their existing operations. Using Activity-Based Costing (ABC), we then find that the overall channel costs are only slightly more expensive than those in the traditional model. However, the manufacturer takes on a much larger portion of those costs than they would in the existing model. The transfer of the distribution labor and inventory holding costs from the retailer to the manufacturer drives these cost shifts. As expected, we found significant working capital benefits for the retailer when shifting to drop-shipping. To understand the potential gains that could be achieved from capturing lost sales, we paired data from a Web Extraction System with Point-of-Sale data to obtain previously unavailable retailer inventory information. Contrary to initial expectations for this scenario, the retailer displays very high inventory availability, making lost sales a weak justification for adopting this model. Lastly, using publicly available time-in-transit tables, we model the changes in delivery time that customers experience. The results show that the average delivery time increases by one day for most locations in the US. Our framework and analyses contribute to developing an understanding of the opportunities and implications of drop shipping. In addition, we introduce new techniques manufacturers can use to deal with asymmetric inventory information.
by Christopher Alan Creyts and Nora Weisskopf.
M. Eng. in Logistics

Abstract:
In floriculture marketing of orchid flowers is highlighted by the high ornamental potential of this family, where the genus Cattleya is highlighted by the shape and beauty of its flowers. Fertilization is a key to ensure production efficiency and quality management to flowers. There are few studies on nutrition orchids, being adopted by producers, several empirical recipes with a wide range of fertilizers however. But more recent studies reveal a great complexity of the subject, and the variables fertilizations according to species, phenological stage, beyond the scope of production, should be taken into consideration the types of fertilizers, the dosage, the frequency, the interactions between nutrient/substrate and nutrient/nutrient. Most of these studies is related to the use of NPK formulations applied for fertigation, however, the efficiency of the application of a nutrient depends on the balance with the other. Thus studies indicate that the use of organic fertilizers, combined with chemical formulation (NPK), provides plants a more adequate nutrition, given that organic fertilizers have a greater diversity of nutrients, which are released gradually, ensuring a supply of nutrients balanced and continuous. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of the orchid Cattleya 'Chocolate Drop', using chemistry and organic fertilizers and their combinations. The plants used in this study were clones of Cattleya 'Chocolate Drop' with two years of age. The treatments were: T1) without fertilization, T2) NPK 20-20-20, T3) mixture of castor bean meal and bone meal, T4) bokashi, T5) NPK 20-20-20 + mixture of castor bean meal and bone meal, T6) NPK 20-20-20 + bokashi, T7) mixture of castor bean meal and bone meal + bokashi, T8) NPK 20-20-20 + mixture of castor bean meal and bone meal + bokashi. Eight months after the start of the experiment were evaluated: dry weight of shoots, dry weight of roots, shoot length, mean root length, number of pseudobulbs, number of shoots, leaf area, chlorophyll content, determining the levels and accumulation macro and micro nutrients of shoot and nutrient balance index, the substrate pH and electrical conductivity were evaluated. The design was completely randomized with 10 replications and the data were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey test at 5% significance. The combination of NPK 20-20-20 with bokashi organic fertilizer (T6), was superior to treatment without fertilization (T1) for most characteristics, except in the dry mass of roots and number of pseudobulbs, being the only superior treatment in relation to the dry weight of shoots, where the isolated use of NPK 20-20-20 (T2) or bokashi (T4) did not differ statistically from the treatment without fertilization. In relation to nutrient content, the combination T6 showed higher levels of phosphorus and potassium, and accumulation in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and iron in relation to treatment without fertilization, being among all the most balanced treatments, according to indexes nutritional balance. We conclude that the combination of chemical and organic fertilization favors the development of hybrid plants of Cattleya 'Chocolate Drop'.

Abstract:
Radical prostatectomy (RP) is a therapeutic option for patients with clinically localized prostate carcinoma and a life expectancy of at least 10 years. All the patients subjected to radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP), either NS and non-NS, at a single academic Institute from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2010 were included in the study. At our Institution all RP patients, whether subjected to NS or to non-NS procedures, are offered an ED rehabilitation programme with alprostadil (Caverject®, Pfizer Inc). The primary endpoint was the rate of compliance or dropout in the first 6 months; the secondary endpoint were the reasons for refusal or dropout. Patients were not divided into NS and non-NS, since we were interested in assessing their acceptance of a programme that is offered to all RP patients. A total of 430 patients underwent RP at our Institution; their mean age was 64.59 years (± 6.5), and 66.7 % had an IIEF-5 score ≥ 20 (Fig. 3). All reported being sexually active in the 6 months prior to the operation. The ED rehabilitation programme was accepted by 273 patients and rejected by 157. Refusal to participate was due to lack of sexual interest by the patient in 81 cases (51.6 %) and by his spouse/partner in 46 cases (30.2 %) (Tab.2). Patients who did not participate were significantly older than the participants group and had a lower mean IIEF-5 score (< 20 in 53.5 % of patients). Of the 273 patients who decided to participate, 212 (77.6 %) had IIEF-5 scores ≥ 20. 18.6 % of patients dropped out over the first 6 months; in the majority of cases the reason was treatment ineffectiveness or disappointment with its effects despite all attempts at adjusting the alprostadil dose; the second most frequent reason was injection pain. Most of the patients subjected to RP seek help to recover sexual potency. However, the route to penile rehabilitation is demanding and frustrating; eventually nearly 20 % of these subject drop out. It is our opinion that early administration of injected drugs and careful counselling and support are required to motivate patients to pursue this goal after a traumatic procedure such as RP. We also feel that the management of these subjects would benefit from a change of focus, from the patient to the couple viewed as a single and complex player.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the relationship between the clitics and the prodrop parameter in sentences with indeterminate subjects, with the inacusative verb to seem and with imperative verbs in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). For this it makes use of the theoretical framework outlined by Chomsky (1981), Rizzi (1986) and Raposo (1992), which postulates the existence of a Universal Grammar, and according to which the language faculty was divided into two parts. On one side were the principles which are universal and constant, and are responsible for similarities between languages. On the other side were the parameters, that although also universal, have a value that changes from language to language, which would explain the difference between them. The research was motivated initially by the realization that, as has been reported by Holmberg (2000) about the scandinavian languages, with respect to the operation named Stilistic Fronting, the subject position in BP has been increasingly filled by XP's moved to that position, or inserted in it in order to check the feature EPP, which, according Chomsky (1998), requires that the position of Spec-TP (Spec-IP) is filled by a category. Thus, the satisfaction of EPP, according to Holmberg (op.cit.) Can occur in several ways: by movement of a theta-DP; by inserting an expletive XP; for clitic pronouns; or even for agreement affixes in T°. The main hypothesis of this study is that pronominal clitics, especially first-person "me", move to subject position when it is empty, including occasioning the order (cl +V) in absolute beginning of the sentence, countering European Portuguese data evidencing an characteristic of PB. Preliminary surveys realize that whenever the pronominal clitic is present in a context of indeterminate subject, there is the exclusion of the nominative pronoun, which reinforces the idea that the clitic occupies the position of the excluded nominative pronoun within the structure of this sentence.

Abstract:
This master thesis deals with e-traders adaptation of a physical shopping experience into a virtual one. More specifically we examine e-retailers of fashion apparel, a market that more dependent on the physical purchasing experience. Our research question is as follows: How do e-retailers of fashion apparel adapt the physical purchasing process to a virtual context? To examine this, we used Overby’s article "Process Virtualization Theory and the Impact of Information Technology" from 2008 where he describes four different factors that influence a purchase: sensory requirements, relationship requirements, synchronization requirements and identification and control requirements. To strengthen Overby’s theory we also used Belk’s (1975) theory about situation variables and the general theory of Internet marketing. These theories are summarized in a theoretical model which we have based our analysis on. For our empirical data collection we use a qualitative approach. After establishing an interview template based on the theoretical framework, we executed two telephone interviews and three e-mail interviews with e-retailers of fashion clothing. The results shows that e-retailers have used these factors in slightly different ways in the process of virtualization. Marketing is by necessity almost adapted to the Internet. The physical experience, however, is copied as closely as possible, and the goal is that customers gets an idea of what the products look like and feels like in reality. Our conclusion is that in the end, the virtualization process is a compromise between physical processes adapted to a virtual context, and new ideas that would not have been possible in any other medium. Finding a balance between these factors will be one of the greatest challenges for e-retailers in the future.

Abstract:
This work presents a study on the eect of shading in neutron detectors, when used in measures of reactivity with the rod drop technique. Shading can be understood as a change in the eciency of the detectors, when it is given in detected neutrons / ssion occurred in the reactor, more evident in the detectors closest to the bank being inserted. The method of analysis was based on simulations of reactor IPEN/MB-01, using the code CITATION and MCNP program. In both cases, the results were static, showing Neutronic ows in only two situations: before insertion of the control rod and after insertion. The measure of reactivity in this case was achieved using the expression derived from the source jerk technique. In addition to theoretical study, data from a rod drop experiment conducted in the reactor IPEN/MB-01 were also used. In this case, the reactivity was obtained using inverse kinetic method, since experimental data were set of values that vary with time. In all cases, correction factors for the shadowing eect have been proposed.

The event was inserted in the National Plan for Elimination of CFCs, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The objective of this research is analyze the performance of the hydrocarbons application as zeotropic mixtures in domestic refrigerator and validate the application of technical standards for pull down and cycling (on-off) tests to the mixture R290/R600a (50:50) in domestic refrigerator. It was first developed an computational analysis of R290/R600a (50:50) compared to R134a and other mass fractions of the hydrocarbons mixtures in the standard ASHRAE refrigeration cycle in order to compare the operational characteristics and thermodynamic properties of fluids based on the software REFPROP 6.0. The characteristics of the Lorenz cycle is presented as an application directed to zeotropic mixtures. Standardized pull down and cycling (on-off) tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the hydrocarbons mixture R290/R600a (50:50) as a drop-in alternative to R134a in domestic refrigerator of 219 L. The results showed that the use of R290/R600a (50:50) with a charge of refrigerant reduced at 53% compared to R134a presents reduced energy performance than R134a. The COP obtained with hydrocarbon mixture was about 13% lower compared to R134a. Pull down times in the refrigerator compartments for fluids analyzed were quite close, having been found a 4,7% reduction in pull down time for the R290/R600a compared to R134a, in the freezer compartment. The data indicated a higher consumption of electric current from the refrigerator when operating with the R290/R600a. The values were higher than about 3% compared to R134a. The charge of 40 g of R290/R600a proved very low for the equipment analyzed
Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses object (and subject) omission in three Guaraní languages, providing evidence for agreement–based direct object drop and genuine pro in internal argument position. The empirical facts show that 1p and 2p object omission behaves very similarly to classical, even consistent, and agreement–based subject drop in better-studied languages (Barbosa, 2011a; Roberts & Holmberg, 2010). On the other hand, we see that Guaraní languages additionally allow for discourse-anchored 3p null arguments, occurring in parallel fashion in both external and internal positions. These patterns approximate Guaraní-style null argument licensing to what was previously described for radical pro-drop languages (Barbosa, 2011b; Holmberg, 2005; Huang, 1984; Tomioka, 2003). Hence, the resulting system referred to here as person-split pro-drop integrates both agreement–based pro-drop and the licensing of agreement-independent argument omission, in a system where several argument omission types not only co-exist but also interact in mixed argument configurations. Core to the pattern is the asymmetric null argument licensing mainly along the lines of 1/2p(erson) versus 3p features rather than along the line of grammatical function. Even though I differentiate two classes of empty nominals in the system, namely weak pronouns and empty nominals [NP e], this distinction alone cannot fully account for the Guaraní-style pro-drop pattern. Central to modelling argument omission encountered in the Guaraní data is to employ theoretical proposals on the role of highly articulated agree probes [u3, u2, u1] — generating sensitivity to Person Hierarchy (PH) effects in the (narrow) syntax — into the overall generative debate on null argument licensing (Béjar, 2003; Béjar & Rezac, 2008; Oxford, 2014, 2017, 2019).

AbstractConnected and automated driving is one of several emerging mobility trends that will fundamentally impact the use and design of public spaces in the coming decades. The uptake of transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber, has shown that a greater use of shared modes adds more vehicles to the road and shifts pick-up and drop-off locations onto the street, i.e. increasing activity at the kerb (Larco 2018: 50; Erhardt et al. 2019). Similar effects were caused by recent waves of dockless micromobility options, such as free-floating bikes or e-scooters, which temporarily led to congested pavements and increased spatial demands in public space (Polis 2019).

Abstract:
AbstractCare pathways in hospitals around the world reported significant disruption during the recent COVID-19 pandemic but measuring the actual impact is more problematic. Process mining can be useful for hospital management to measure the conformance of real-life care to what might be considered normal operations. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that process mining can be used to investigate process changes associated with complex disruptive events. We studied perturbations to accident and emergency (A &E) and maternity pathways in a UK public hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-incidentally the hospital had implemented a Command Centre approach for patient-flow management affording an opportunity to study both the planned improvement and the disruption due to the pandemic. Our study proposes and demonstrates a method for measuring and investigating the impact of such planned and unplanned disruptions affecting hospital care pathways. We found that during the pandemic, both A &E and maternity pathways had measurable reductions in the mean length of stay and a measurable drop in the percentage of pathways conforming to normative models. There were no distinctive patterns of monthly mean values of length of stay nor conformance throughout the phases of the installation of the hospital’s new Command Centre approach. Due to a deficit in the available A &E data, the findings for A &E pathways could not be interpreted.

Abstract:
AbstractDense embedding-based semantic matching is widely used in e-commerce product search to address the shortcomings of lexical matching such as sensitivity to spelling variants. The recent advances in BERT-like language model encoders, have however, not found their way to realtime search due to the strict inference latency requirement imposed on e-commerce websites. While bi-encoder BERT architectures enable fast approximate nearest neighbor search, training them effectively on query-product data remains a challenge due to training instabilities and the persistent generalization gap with cross-encoders. In this work, we propose a four-stage training procedure to leverage large BERT-like models for product search while preserving low inference latency. We introduce query-product interaction pre-finetuning to effectively pretrain BERT bi-encoders for matching and improve generalization. Through offline experiments on an e-commerce product dataset, we show that a distilled small BERT-based model (75M params) trained using our approach improves the search relevance metric by up to 23% over a baseline DSSM-based model with similar inference latency. The small model only suffers a 3% drop in relevance metric compared to the 20x larger teacher. We also show using online A/B tests at scale, that our approach improves over the production model in exact and substitute products retrieved.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter was prepared originally for the 2002 Task Force of the OECD Project on the Impact of E-Government and was updated in 2004 for inclusion in the book, Practicing E-Government: A Global Perspective. The chapter addresses the risk of low public awareness and declining political interest as barriers to e-government, and considers ways governments can develop better marketing techniques to “sell” online services and the e-government concept to both groups. The term “marketing” is used loosely to mean both the presentation and promotion of actual online services to encourage people to use them, and the presentation and promotion of the theory and concept of e-government to ensure political understanding of its benefits to society. The chapter has two parts plus an initial Executive Summary that summarizes the points raised in both sections. Part A discusses demand-side issues: the lack of awareness and confusion among users and potential users of electronic services and how these issues can be addressed with various marketing techniques. While the greatest factor contributing to low take-up of electronic services continues to be poor Internet access and a lack of computer skills, the purpose of this report is not to address social exclusion issues. It is recognized that the digital divide is gradually being bridged and therefore the chapter primarily considers the person who has access to a computer but, for a variety of reasons, does not use it to access government services. Part B looks at the supply side and ways to market the concept of e-government to decision-makers — politicians and senior level bureaucrats — who are responsible for supporting and funding the development of online services and for removing remaining regulatory and legal barriers. The chapter does not address culture change within the public sector and the need to shift the mindset of government employees from traditional department-centric thinking into more customer-centric and user-friendly approaches. Overcoming employee resistance to new working methods requires more management skills than marketing skills. But marketing techniques can be used to address the risk of a backlash against e-government as declining political interest in the Internet generally and in e-government specifically coincides with the need to develop more complex and expensive electronic services and information systems. The author would like to thank Stefan Czerniawski, David Hickman, Chris Roberts, and Rod Quiney for their contributions.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper reports and discusses field and laboratory results obtained with the application of the lateral ohmic drop extrapolation technique which allows the elimination of the ohmic drop contribution affecting the potential measurement of buried metallic structures (pipelines, concrete reinforcement) in the presence of stray current interference. The measurement is carried out, for a short period, by recording simultaneously the potential E and the lateral ohmic drop ΔV. Two reference electrodes are used: one placed above the pipeline, the other one far enough away to measure the potential difference versus the former, at least higher than 20-30 mV. Afterwards potential values are plotted against the lateral ohmic drop. When the technique is applicable, a straight line is obtained and the true potential of the structure can be achieved by means of the graphical extrapolation to zero of the lateral ohmic drop ΔV. The technique has been proposed and applied to cathodically protected pipelines in presence of stray currents. Recent surveys have shown that the method is also applicable to free corroding buried structures (for instance, the casing used for road crossing or rebar in reinforced concrete) and gives the true corrosion condition. The extrapolated potential value is regarded as the true free corrosion potential (or mixed potential) without the ohmic drop contribution induced by the stray current. In the case of structures in free corrosion conditions, the method can be related to the Stern-Geary linear polarisation resistance theory which is based on the linear relationship between potential and external current around the free corrosion potential. For the lateral ohmic drop technique a potential change is “Spontaneously” induced by the external electric field. Therefore, instead of measuring the current exchanged by the structure, in this case not possible, the lateral ohmic drop is measured. The latter is however proportional to the unknown current exchanged by the pipeline. The straight-line obtained by plotting the E vs ΔV confirms the linear relationship on which the technique is based.

Abstract:
Abstract Based on the mass transport in the stress corrosion crack, a mathematical expression of potential distribution along the stress corrosion crack is deduced. From this mathematical expression and the E-pH diagram for H2O, a new mechanism for hydrogen generation in the stress corrosion crack i.e. H+ partial potential drop mechanism, is proposed. Following this mechanism, the relationship between hydrogen generation and affecting factors, such as current density of anodic dissolution inside the crack, pH value, partial resistivity of H+ ion, dimension of the crack and potential of the metal, is discussed. The mechanism is verified by experimental measurement results of the H+ partial potential drop with microelectrodes placed in an artificial crack on AISI 410 stainless steel in 3%NaCl solution.

Abstract:
Abstract Use of corrosion inhibitors as gas drag reducing agents has been reported by Arco E&P Technology. It was postulated in the literature that the drag reduction in gas transmission lines could be achieved by applying a thin coating on the pipeline inner surface to reduce friction between the flowing gas and pipe wall. Some corrosion inhibitors can adsorb strongly on the metal surfaces to form a smooth film similar to that of gas drag reducer to mitigate gas turbulence at the gas/solid interface. In an attempt to cost-effectively boost the gas production rate, a field trial was conducted in the Gulf of Mexico using the same chemical reported in the literature. Our results are in good agreement with the performance quoted in the literature, that is, the peak gas production rate increases by 10-15% and the peak pressure drop decreases up to 20%.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Describes the development of 'the E-i method' for determining the resting potential of a cathodically protected pipeline. The revised method relies upon a linear-regression fit of a line to on and instant-off potentials and an extrapolation of that line to a potential where the on potential was equal to the off potential and the IR drop in the on potential was zero, which is uniquely the resting potential.

Abstract:
This study reviews the Illinois Department of Transportation’s full-depth asphalt, limiting strain criterion, and asphalt over rubblized concrete design procedures, considering technological advancements in hot-mix asphalt—namely, the increased use of recycled materials and modified asphalt binders. The researchers evaluated the current |E*| algorithm by conducting laboratory tests with four mix designs and seven asphalt binders of different Superpave performance grades. They compared predictive models, including the current Illinois modulus algorithm as well as the Witczak, Hirsch, and newly developed Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) Bayesian neural network (BNN) models. The ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) nondestructive test for modulus and field modulus measurements was evaluated as well. Subsequent tasks involved reviewing current fatigue endurance limit (FEL) criteria from an adapted protocol for the four-point bending beam fatigue test. This study found that typical hot-mix asphalt modulus values in Illinois are underestimated compared to modern mixes, suggesting potential savings by allowing an increased modulus value to be used, reducing layer thickness design. Low-temperature performance grades significantly influenced modulus, and the developed ICT BNN predictive model outperformed traditional ones. While UPV was promising for modulus screening, challenges related to material properties assumptions were identified. The current stage of research on assessing modern mixes’ FEL reveals the complexity of observing FEL using simplified methods. To advance this objective, a concept of acceptable stiffness ratio (SR) is introduced. In these cases, exceptionally long fatigue life would be obtained for mixes that demonstrate an acceptable drop in SR within 10,000 cycles, with no apparent evolution of the damage state. The most conservative estimation of strain level that would result in acceptable SR aligned with IDOT’s current 70 microstrain FEL criteria. On the less conservative side, allowing a 10% drop in SR within 10,000 loading cycles could increase the acceptable SR < 1 strain level as high as approximately 180 microstrain, with caution needed regarding evolving mobility trends and environmental stressors including the changing climate.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Drop-in replacement biofuels and electrofuels can provide net-zero CO2 emissions with dramatic reductions in contrail formation. Biofuels must transition to second-generation cellulosic feedstocks while improving land and soil management. Electrofuels, or "e-fuels,” require aggressive cost reduction in hydrogen production, carbon capture, and fuel synthesis. Hydrogen has great potential for energy efficiency, cost reduction, and emissions reduction; however, its low density (even in liquid form) combined with it’s extremely low boiling temperature mean that bulky spherical tanks will consume considerable fuselage volume. Still, emerging direct-kerosene fuel cells may ultimately provide a superior zero-emission, energy-dense solution. </div><div class="htmlview paragraph"><b>Decarbonized Power Options for Civil Aviation </b>discusses the current challenges with these power options and explores the economic incentives and levers vital to decarbonization. The Competitive Advantage of Nations: A Successful Experience, Realigning the Strategy to Transform the Economic and Social Development of the Basque Country. Universidad de Deusto, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18543/xiqr3861.

Full text
Abstract:
Why do the new economy and welfare societies recommend a new station on the long journey towards competitiveness initiated within the framework of “The Competitive Advantage of Nations”, published as long as 25 years ago? A little more than twenty-five years ago, the Basque Country decided to equip itself with its own development strategy, undertaking to meet the challenge of designing its own future. The Basque Country aspired to give itself the maximum degree of self-government as a nation without a State, following its release from a long dictatorship which had plunged it into autarchy and isolation from the Western democracies around it, limiting its ability and responsibility to shape its own destiny and to offer its Society the highest standards of welfare, facing one of the greatest economic, political and social crises of its history and suffering from the ravages of terrorism within an economy castigated by soaring unemployment above 25%, a drop in its GDP, the fall, like dominoes, of its key industrial sectors, locked into the monoculture of the steel and metal working industry, outside the Europe which was being constructed by the then Economic Community of the Six, marginalized as a peripheral area from the future axis and development of the so-called “blue banana” of the London-Milan backbone and with an incipient and inexperienced administration, full of youth and enthusiasm, and a business world undergoing conversion, learning to live with a trade union phenomenon that the former dictatorship had bypassed. Faced with this complex and exciting challenge, those of us who had the privilege of addressing the aforementioned proposal, interpreting (by means of our analyses, as well as the wish to make our desires and dreams come true) the main keys to explain the state of the world economy, the main trends of change and their foreseeable impact on the Basque economy (“What the world economy taught us”), began the task of defining what we call “A strategy for the modernization and internationalization of our economy and our Country” trying to give some meaning to the role expected of the new players (States, city-regions, provinces, etc.), a role in which our small Country, with features of a City-Region, a sub-national entity, an invertebrate area on the two sides of the Pyrenees, could assume the figure of co-protagonist and provide society with a prosperous future. We also needed the framework and tools desirable for tackling the success strategy. We identified the gap between the needs that would be generated by the new paradigms and the tools offered by the existing political-economic framework (contents, skills, potential developments), accompanied by our own Country-strategy, with special emphasis on the initiatives, factors and critical vectors our society would demand and its aspirations for well-being and development. Within this context, the Basque Government approached Michael E. Porter, his ideas and concepts of the moment, and we began a collaborative process (which lasts until this day), constructing much more than our “Competitive Advantage of the Basque Country” in a thrilling and unfinished “Journey towards Competitiveness and Prosperity”. The Basque Country enjoys the privilege of having been the first nation to apply, in a strategic and comprehensive manner, the concepts which, a few years later, came to light in the prestigious publication we celebrate today, titled “The Competitive Advantage of Nations”, which has inspired the design of numerous policies and strategies throughout the world, which has brought about a proliferation of followers, which has trained instructors and which has generated a large number of new researchers and academics, new policy makers, new instruments for competitiveness and extraordinary levels of prosperity throughout the world. Since then, we have shared our own particular project which, alive and changing, responds to the new economic and social challenges and conflicts by constructing and applying a Country strategy with distinctive achievements and results beyond our economic environment. It lies within the conceptual framework inspired by the complementary tripod of Michael E. Porter's conceptual movement in his Competitive Advantage (Competitiveness, Shared Value Initiative and Social Progress) and our contributions learned from day to day in keeping with our vocation, identity, will and commitment. It is a never-ending process based on a model and a way of understanding the former pledge to give ourselves a single strategy designed by and for people.
